August 8th at Layalena The Womans Entrepreneurship Initiative will be putting on an event to raise money for widowed women in India.

The mission of the Womens Entrepreneurship Initiative is to encourage social entrepreneurship among women by providing grants and microloans in the aftermath of social epidemics. In support of this mission the Women’s Entrepreneurship Initiative will:

• Empower individuals and organizations worldwide through the encouragement of social entrepreneurism;

• Create new jobs that are needed, wanted, and encouraged by the surrounding community;

• Alleviate current debt and break the cycle of debt inheritance passed on through generations;

• Use social entrepreneurial activities as a way to minimize social epidemics that arise from debt inheritance such as suicide, fleeing the country, and violent protests.

Momentarily we are working in India and are having an even in Phoenix this coming August. Please come and join us to support this cause and watch some fantastic performers!

Exciting news for the Cummunity of Music and Dance!

Mystic Jewell is passing the torch on to Plaza de Anaya ~World Fusion Studio to continue the legacy of World Music and Dance in the beautiful location of 524 W. Broadway Suite 107 in Tempe .

July 20th, Sunday 2008 Come play with us!

Take home a piece of history from Mystic Jewell. The Plaza will be redecorating and Missy will be open this Friday-Sunday from 11am-5pm for a huge sale! You will have the opportunity to purchase items such as rugs, decorations, shelves, baskets, and all remaining costumes will be drastically reduced! Come see what is being retired from the legacy and maybe you will be lucky enough to take a piece home with you!

The Hafla will be this Sunday, July 20th from 3:30pm-5:30pm and at 4:00pm Mystic Jewell will be showcasing their latest class accomplishments with a recital for students and teachers from the last class session.

MECDA Fall Festival of Music & Dance - Nov. 1

Hello Dancers,

The MECDA chapter is now taking reservations for performance spots on the festival stage. We will have ongoing entertainment from 10:30am to 5:00pm - that's a lot of dancing - come be part of it!

Soloists 5 minutes
Duet/Trio 10 minutes
Troupes 4+ 15 minutes

There will also be 7 drop-in workshops presented by instructors from throughout the state. Please check here for more info:

We also need people to volunteer to help with admissions, stage managing and workshop helpers - this can be just a 1 or 2 hour stint during your day and will be greatly appreciated. It takes a LOT more than the 4 members of the MECDA chapter board to run an event like this!

Friday, March 7 - w/Alien Jon & assistant Tricia: $40 covers both classes
• 6-7:00 Fundamental forms of modern poi $20 - Covers fundamental poi concepts, exercises, and poi scales. Indispensable for the beginner, fill in holes for intermediate spinners, and give advanced spinners a chance to delve deeply into the foundation that makes all advanced moves easy to learn and flow with.
• 7-8:00 Advanced Poi and technical concepts $30 - Covers an advanced model and understanding of the spin zones around the human body so that you can spin anywhere in any orientation including behind the head and back or under the legs. This also includes inside planes and inswings in between the arms all around the body. Further exploration in the body and poi relationships as time sculpture: tracing geometry through time. This yields incredible feelings and unbelievable visual effects for your audience. For the uber-advanced we can cover 'Composite' spinning: pattern construction using independent control of each hand/poi. For example advanced hybrids.

Big Hafla May 3rd with Souhail Kaspar and Rachid Halihal (Phoenix area)

Hi, everyone, I just wanted to update you with information on the upcoming hafla and workshops with Souhail Kaspar. He will be here the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. (Please disregard the earlier date. We had to move it back one weekend). The hafla will be a dance party with Souhail and Rachid Halihal. Also some local musicians, some featured dancers, some wonderful vending by Fashionable Movement and Anaya Tribal, oh yeah, and LOTS of dancing for party attendies. Fun, fun, fun!

Also, don't forget to cheer Souhail on on February 10th for the 50th Grammy award show! He has been nominated for this year's Grammy in World Music for his work with Rahim Alhaj in "When the Soul is Settled: The Music of Iraq."

The *SiStars of the BoomBah* express a new form of Tribal Fusion. Belly
Dance now comes "Unboxed"!

Belly Dance is let out of the box in this workshop, taking traditional
movement and learning how to flow it through the body continuously. We
will drill basic technique and add on an interesting layer of transition
to snake throughout the body. We will do this by taking pieces of moves
and connecting them with other moves to make a whole new dance language.
We will focus on breaking and connecting layers of movement and learn a
short choreography.

About the Instructor:
Mia Donna was born in Ohio and raised on horseback. She spent her young
life rescuing and rehabilitating horses and working with Mustangs
brought into captivity. When she started college in 1999, she was
quickly drawn into the dance program and began studying African and
Modern technique. In 2001, Mia Donna became interested in Belly Dance
and set out for a teacher. She found three and studied intensely
through advanced level technique, teacher training, dance as a holistic
practice and performance etiquette. Through her college studies, she
was able to complete an intensive research project on the origin,
history and development of Belly Dance and create a fitness program in
dance. Today, Mia Donna is an active teacher in traditional cabaret,
tribal, aerobic, and her own style of Belly Dance, Liquid Fusion Break
Beat. She performs with Troupe Gypsy Soul out of Ohio and the
experimental dance project named Star Kids. Now living in Sedona, she
is directing her new Troupe, rightfully named *SiStars of the BoomBah*.
Mia Donna continues her love of dance by continuing to study new forms
of movement expression. Currently, she is studying cardio hip hop and
jazz funk to expand her movement language.

Alien Jon and Zan Coming to the Tempe/Pheonix area

I'll be flying into Phoenix on the 26th of Jan, and staying through the run of the Renaissance faire, if not mid April. I'm looking for people to spin poi with, in fact I was hoping to stir up interest in meeting during the weeks in a park, or some such. maybe Encanto Park where the juggling club meets?

I'm also looking to set up workshops in the Tempe/Phoenix area, probably at Mystic Jewel, wich I've emailed Missy about. I'll cover poi of course, but want to see if people are also interested in staff (contact and doubles), contact juggling/sphereplay, and devil stix (including doubles). Not to let the cat out of the bag too soon, but Zan is coming to visit and we will probably be collaboration on the workshops. Along with my friend Thom (AKA Chess Taipan).

Slithery Pop and Locks Bellydance Class starting!

I will be teaching a fabulous choreography to some upbeat yet sultry hiphop music at the Mystic Jewell studio on Thursdays (starting Jan 10, 2008) at 6.10p. We will be teaching a skill levels, (I have many assistants for the class, so the newbies will be able to keep up, and those more advanced will be challenged). anyways, she said that should would make her way to phoenix for a weekend or so if we could get enough people. She said that once she has 10 people signed up she books a flight, so give a post up here if your interested.

Also, though she does do belly dance a lot, her experience goes far, so very far beyond it so don't think you have to be a dancer to get her to shoot you

Also, we have a change in the workshop line-up. On Sunday, Oct 7th, the Zafira Sword Workshop at 11am-1pm has been changed to a Shimmy workshop! Yay for shimmies! Due to space limitations with swords, we’ve decided to change it up and offer a workshop that allows for more dancers to sign up.

Here’s the Shimmy Workshop Description, and you KNOW you want to take it! Who can resist SHIMMIES?!!

3/4 Shimmies!

Take your shimmies to the next level! In this workshop we will cover the classic 3/4 shimmy, with walking, layering exercises and drills. We will also take the 3/4 shimmy to parts of our bodies you never knew were supposed to 3/4 shimmy!

We will cover 4/4 shimmies as well to better understand and get better control of our hips.

To finish off our workshop we'll cover some unique combos utilizing what we learned, Zafira style!

Please bring water and a yoga mat for warm up & cool down.

If you want to take the shimmy workshop I suggest you sign up quick as this one is right around the corner from selling out too!

Want to get involved in BoomBoomBellyfest? Well, we’re looking for some volunteers! We need a little help to keep things running smoothly on Sat and Sun, Oct 6-7 for BoomBoomBellyfest. MECDA Picnic in Nov.? Who's in??

Hey everybody... our MECDA chapter is planning a celebration of our first year. Here's what we have in mind.....
An all day picnic at Papago Park at the ramada near the lake tentatively set for the first Sunday in Nov., including all day performances - as many as we can get - on the ampitheater stage. It's a beautiful setting and we'd like it to be a very relaxed community gathering.

The stage is about 20 x 20 but in a hexagonal shape. I think it could accomodate groups of up to 5. We'd like to the lineup to reflect the diversity of styles we have in the community and therefore want to include as many of our AZ dancers as possible.

The preliminary plans have been checked out. What we need is to know that the community is willing to come out and dance and participate. There will be no admission, but donations to defray the cost of the event will be accepted. Before we put down the money on the event and invest our time in more planning, we'd like to know that people are interested in coming out and supporting it.

In addition to dancers, we'll need some volunteers both in preparation and on the day of the event. The park has power for a sound system, but we a system to plug into it for amplified performance music. It would have been nice to include live music but the park rules don't allow live amplified music :-( - damn! I'm not sure if that excludes acoutstic instruments.

So what do you think?

Palm Flames is Back!!

There has been a schedule change for the current session at the Mystic Jewell. Effective this coming Wednesday August 29 the staff class from 7:20pm - 8:20pm has been replaced with Tribal Palm Flames with Jen Bentz. Tribal Palm Flames is an incredibly hot class and is
geared toward intermediate students who are familiar with tribal fusion ques, combos, and formations.

Student recital/Missing Staffs

First, I want to thank everyone who performed at the student recital today (August 12th) and also thank everyone who came out to support their friends and family. The recital was fantastic and everyone did an excellent job!!

We will be closed for one week and our new session starts the 20th of August. We have lots of cool new classes, check them out here:

Now for some dissapointing news. As we were cleaning up after the recital we noticed we were missing two (not one folks, but TWO) of our retail fire staff. We are really bummed out that someone has walked off with these, and for a small business this is a good sized blow as fire staff are not cheap.

We like to think that we can open the studio up to the public and share our charished space without fear of theft. We sincerely hope that this was an accident and someone didn't purposley walk off with property that was not theirs.

If you did wander out of the studio with a staff or two, regardless of the intent, we would really appreciate having them returned. We are closed for the week (August 13th thru 19th) and it would make our day to come back on the 20th of August and have them back. Believe it or not, these staff fit quite nicely through the mail slot in the front door - just slide them on through, no questions asked. Here is a picture of a similar staff:

That someone here at Mystic Jewell is teaching sword dancing? Am I hallucinating or is this true?

I'm a sword novice and I'd like to be able to work my way up to performing with a scimitar without (A) losing one or more of my toes or (B) decapitating anyone in my audience. Simple goal, dontcha think? Is there someone there who might be able to help me?

I want to extend a personal invite to all of you beautiful belly dancers out there to come check out "Aura" at the Mystic Jewell Studio.

This is a very unique event that gives the bellydance community an opportunity to hang out, socialize and dance without the pressure or constraints of a performance or venue. It is simply our way of providing a really cool laid back atmosphere with some fabulously belly danceable tunes so us girls (and guys) can just hang out and dance!

Absolutely everyone is welcome, we want to encourage the networking and community spirit of belly dancers everywhere. We are, after all, sisters (and brothers!) in dance!

Some things are just awesome together: chocolate and peanut butter, Britney Spears and drunken rampages, trance music and belly dancing. Local DJ collective Overmind Works serves up the latter in spades at its monthly laid-back dance spectacular Aura, which goes down at belly dancing joint the Mystic Jewell Studio, 524 West Broadway Road in Tempe. This weekend's edition, Aura: Garnet, on Saturday, January 13, features Overmind residents Hahn the Barbarian, Nick Synergy, Dionysos Pan Eros, and Moksha Mind spinning psychedelic trance, tribal beats, and "ethno-chill tunes" for folks who can also partake in henna tattoos, a hookah lounge, and fire artistry by S_T_3, when they aren't busting a move on the hardwood dance floor. Another poi workshop!

If interested, Noel from S.F. CA is teaching 2 advanced poi workshops followed by 1 contact staff workshop on January 13th. Poi classes will be 3:00-4:30 and 5:00-6:30. Noel Yee’s Bio
Noel Yee has been involved in object manipulation for the past three years, focusing on poi and staff throughout, contact staff for a year, and most recently contact juggling. He values his experience training and collaborating with many individuals and groups including MCP from Scotland, Dave from Colorado, Isa Issacs and Temple of Poi, Zan from Instruments of the Now (which recently released the “Encyclopoidia”), Coven Fire Collective, LSD Fuego, InterKonnected, the fire arts festival with the IK dragon, and the Fire Conclave at Burning Man for the past two years.

Noel has taught contact staff classes in the Bay Area, South Bay, and is organizing classes in NY and the East Coast during this winter. He volunteered and taught a 30 person contact staff class at FireFrums in the Fall of 2006. In the Summer of 2006, Noel worked at Camp Winnarainbow teaching children circus skills and performance techniques. As a high school teacher Noel has a talent for explicit instruction. Keep your eye out for his contact staff instructional DVD to be realesed in Late Spring of 2007!

Looking for a few good people!

Yep, I'm on the hunt for a few good people! First, I am looking for someone to help me redesign the Domba web-site. It's pretty much ready to go, I just need to simplify it quite a bit......and of course, would love to keep it at reasonably priced as possible!

Second, I am also looking for booth gals to work at the AZ Ren FAire coming up in Feb and March. Both f/t and p/t positions and I need gals who are outgoing salespeople, and who preferably already have Domba costuming to wear out there. I need honest, reliable, friendly, organized gals! Aura review

WOW!

I have to say I think the last Aura was a great success!

I was so excited to see so many bellydancers, it was SOOO much fun having an opportunity to dance with so many girls. Where else would one have the opportunity to dance for hours like that? At one point there was a huge ring of tribal girls... I would have to say there had to be a dozen of us... all with different levels of experience and we danced and danced and danced, it flew by but I know I was out there on and off for two hours.

The music was divine, great job to Dionysos Pan Eros and Moksha Mind of OvermindWorks for playing so many great belly-danceable tunes.

Thanks to everyone who came, I had an incredible amount of fun with you all. I can't wait for the next one!

Studio Recital Performances last night!

Where to begin? They were all so good! From the beginning students to the professional dancers and dance troupes who blessed us with their amazing talent - it was all so incredible! I would like to say to say a huge thank you: to Missy for having the event and for her never-ending dedication to the studio and all of her hard work, to our wonderful instructors who give so much of themselves all of the time and who dedicate themselves to seeing us become sucessful dancers and keeping the integrity of the dance while allowing room for it to grow in new directions, to all of the performers (professionals and students) who spent so much of their time and worked so hard in their classes and at home to give us a great show to enjoy, and to all of the people who helped out in every way (folding chairs, setting up, picking up afterwards) in order for us to attend this event and enjoy the showcase of talent that was presented. THANK YOU! The performances were stunning!!! I never cease to be amazed by all of you!

Learn the amazing art of fire spinning with FireGrace. In these workshops you will learn techniques for spinning both poi and staff that will allow you to take the art of fire dancing to a whole new level of intensity and grace. FireGrace is a two time gold medalist at the NBTA World Championships for baton twirling and has been spinning fire for over four years.

Hey there Everyone. We've finally scheduled some Bhangra workshops! Coming up, on December 8 (Saturday) from 10-noon. Call/email the studio and sign up! We'll have so much fun. We'll be learning parts of the Bhangra Choreography Apna Punjab did at the Recital. Get ready to move! We'll start off with lots of great stretches and then move into learning the bhangra combos and mix them into the choreography!

Still Just as Welcoming

well, the owner and name may have changed, but the effect on me hasn't!

Once again, after coming home to the UK, the studio lingers in my memory! People were just as friendly, the shopping was just as addictive, and it was a HUGE relief to see the dance area kept as it was...it's perfect!

Big thanks to all of those who said 'hi', and suffered me trying to join in choreographies in lessons! I'm planning the next trip already!

heidi's new venture!

Hello everyone!
As you all know, I have recently taken a break from my life-long passion of dance and Domba. This has given me so much time with my girls, which we are all incredibly happy to have. It has also given me lots of extra free time as well. What could I possibly be doing with all this new-found free time?, you ask. . . Well, in addition to having immeasurable time with my girls, I have also become a licensed Real Estate Agent! Wow, now that’s a change to the other end of the spectrum, isn’t it? Yes, I am now licensed with the Arizona Dept of Real Estate and am working with a fantastic team of Realtors who are incredibly down-to-earth (not pushy salespeople) and have been working in the valley for about 15 years.
I have found though, that you do need your friends, family and community to get the ball rolling – this is where you come in! heh heh heh. I have found that getting started in Real Estate is not as easy as it sounds - when everyone you know already owns a home, or is not looking for one at this time, you’re really starting from ground zero. How in the world do you get going and showing/selling houses? Well, you get your first referrals from your friends and family (that’s you!).
Now, I know what you’re thinking – everyone (and their dog) has a real estate license, and there are a myriad of people you can refer your friends too, yes? I think there are a few reasons why I can be the best choice for your referrals. First, I will be devoting extensive amounts of time to working in the industry (rather than being an occasional or part-time Real Estate Agent), which will give me the best experience and knowledge to help those who are looking to buy or sell their home. I also aim to give the most personable and quality customer service to all my clients. The same dedication and care I put into dance, our community, and my costumes, will also be given to your friends that you refer to me. I promise that when you send me your referrals, I will take care of them as if they were my own family and will make sure they are taken through the process of buying or selling their house as smoothly and happily as possible!
So how can I help, you ask? Here’s how!
