need a project advisor for college Tarot project

I am starting my final project for my bachelor's in photography this fall. The project I have selected is part historical study of the Tarot, part a collection of portraits I have taken. The project, in a nutshell, is a deck of playing cards where each card correlates to its Tarot equivalent via the symbolism inherent in the portrait that is the card.

So I am looking for a master of the Tarot who is also preferably an art historian or studio artist. The thing is, this project is to graduate from college, so whoever is my project advisor can NOT be a dabbler, a self-proclaimed "master", or even very experienced in Tarot (sorry). You must have a degree that relates somehow to either art history, art theory, history, religion, or any other applicable field, you must have experience with a variety of decks and interpretations - you almost certainly must have scholarly study of the Tarot.

If anyone on this forum is or knows someone who might be interested in being an advisor to this project, please contact me. Obviously, as I live in Portland, OR, the best-case-scenario would be someone who also lives in Portland - but that is NOT a necessity.

I've just recently started pulling regularly (generally a card a day)... and I'm still always tickled and kind of blown away by how many times I'll pull the same cards...

A couple of weeks ago, I pulled Tower twice in a row! Eek! And recently, I pulled Chariot twice in a few days... (rough patterns goin on right now for good ol' rain)... also got 5 of Cups twice in a few days -- spot on...

Do you pull the same cards a lot? Which ones do you get regularly? What's your take on it? I usually just take it to mean that I really need to pay attention to that particular message, or that I'm not paying close enough attention...

Pull a mythic card for 2006

What'd ya get?

I got:
STRENGTH --
On a divinatory level, the card of Strength implies a situation where a collision with the lion within is inevitable, and where a creative handling of one's own rage and senseless pride is desirable. Courage, strength and self-discipline are necessary to battle with the situation. Through such an experience we can come in contact with the beast, but also with that part of us which is Heracles, the hero who can subdue it. Thus the Fool, having developed the faculties of the mind and feeling, now learns to deal with his own ferocious egotism, emerging from this contest with trust in himself and integrity toward others.

...great... :)

This seems to be out of print now...but if you can find a clean copy it's an excellent resource for the Mythic Tarot

http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=Ql6ojrhByu&isbn=0671658425&itm=4

(Copy and paste the whole link into the address window on your browser or search for Mythic Tarot Workbook on the Barnesandnoble.com site.)

The workbook has guided meditations on each card archetype. It also has a line drawing of the image on each card that you are encouraged to color in yourself as part of your meditative "introduction" to the character of the card. It also includes space for you to record your thoughts and observations from your meditations so you can return to them as a reference for your readings later.

Cheers,
Cynthia

Thanks Rain!

Rain

I read cards for about many years and have not touched them in about eight. At the time, I sensed that we needed a break from each other. I feel I am ready again. Very ready, so I was surprised to find this topic on my first exploration of Tribe.net

I have found that the Mythic Tarot is THE deck that works best for me. Many themed decks try to force their particular spin onto the cards. By contrast, the Mythic Tarot flows naturally, image and meaning only rarely jarring. It has the advantage of the classical themes and symbols that are inherent in the cards but so often over-looked.

I particularly like the fact the minor arcanna are tied into one myth per suit; this makes them easier to remember and gives them a deeper resonance than the seemingly arbitrary meanings assigned to them. I continue to have doubts about the minor arcanna’s place in the deck at all, but the mythic tarot has allowed me to appreciate their potential. (but…I have a great deal of studying yet to do on Tarot in general, and the minor arcanna in particular.)

I also like the Mythic Tarot’s insistence that all cards have a “positive & negative” meaning. The fact that one is upside down or not is irrelevant
( although I also find that “reversed” cards often do lean toward a reverse meaning within a reading). One could argue that this allows the reader to BS like the proverbial underhanded fortune teller “ you seem anxious… the spirits are telling me that you are seeking… is it a man.. no no its money yes… something having to do with your career etc etc” I would argue that the cards are like any symbol, capable of several meanings that have nothing to do with sideshow chicanery and everything to do the “collective unconscious” whatever the hell that is <g>

So, thanks for starting this tribe!

Best
Has anyone tried the Dark Moon Spread?

I was sent this spread in an email and I found it very revealing. It is taken from the book "Past Life and Karmic Tarot" by Edain McCoy.

It's a simple spread of just three or four cards but these can show you what may be hidden from you with regard to a past life and how that karma is currently manifesting and the outcome if you maintain the same course in your life.

In astrology, the north and south nodes of the moon are linked to past-life exploration so the Dark Moon Spread mirrors this idea.

After shuffling as usual, lay out three cards vertically. One bottom, one center and one top.

Card #1 represents a major issue from a past life that remains unresolved in your present life.

Card #2 represents something hidden in your current life that is related to the incident or issue in card #1 in which a karmic debt was incurred.

Card #3 represents the outcome of this issue if you continue on your current path in this life. If this card shows a good outcome you may already be moving toward a path of wisdom which will cancel this karmic debt and you are finished with the spread. If the card indicates a bad outcome, draw a fourth and place it on top of card #2. If a 4th card is needed it will show you how to make positive changes in your present life which will result in overcoming your karmic debt.

Of course we can have many karmic debts (if one believes in karma) and this will help you to work through that which you are confronted with at present. I tried it and the answers I got were amazing.

This was my very first deck! I still have it, I still use it, and I've found an incredible amount of value in the associations with the Greek pantheon and mythos. I've done readings in combination with omens for people - where - the way these interpretations are written, it's just played a very large role in finding the proper associations.

I started out by doing a full spread once every 5 or 6 months or so. I was always amazed at what the cards would reveal, and they gave me a lot of clarity when I needed it most.

I've recently started pulling between one and three cards every couple to few days... It's interesting to see repeating patterns in the cards now that I'm pulling them more often.

Hi, I'm thinking about taking a seminar/course on runes, here's what they say:
Using Diana L. Paxson "Taking Up The Runes" book we will cover two (2) runes per month.
We will be looking into Norse Mythology and the Asatru belief systems.

Anyone can shed lite? Is it a very useful tool? how should I expect to use them? with my tarot readings? or replacement of? they say we can use it to do magic too. I'm looking forward to learning more.
Thanks,
