Class 1, Essential Movements 6:30 - 7:45 PM.
Class 2, Creative Combinations 8:00 - 9:15 PM.
These classes are Monday's at the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance in El Cerrito.
Not only do you get lessons in Nanna's personal style, but in addition, her classes delve into her philosophy and musing on the art of belly dance. I find the experience wonderful and highly practical. I leave her class envigorated and more excited about dance.

Hi Nanna!
I had a great time in class last night. It was my first cabaret class!
At one point near the end of class you put on a cd, and the first song (which we didn't dance to--you skipped it) featured a beautiful lyrical violin.
Do you know the name of that song?
I LOVE dancing to the more melodic stuff, and I play the violin, so I really want to practice with it--both dancing and playing!

Nanna will offer expert knowledge on the means to becoming a solo dancer, highlighting individual style, personal expression and character, with an emphasis on core strength, solid skills, form, and proper alignment.
Subject matter will be reviewed in 10 week cycles. Because both classes correspond in weekly subject matter, simultaneous attendance of both classes is likened to a mini-course on the subject(s) of focus. A class guide and itinerary to weekly topics is distributed to class members and is available upon request.

Class 1. - Mondays @ 6:30 – 7:45 pm. - Essential Movements
Core movements, Technique, and Essentials in Nanna's Belly Dance Method
Each class entails an intensive and concentrated study of primary components, such as: Drum Solo Technique, Isolations, Use of Arms, Footwork & Layering.

Class 2. - Mondays @ 8:00 – 9:15 pm. - Creative Combinations
Musical Understanding, Interpretation, and Dynamics are developed through Combinations and Choreographies. Tools and exercises in Projection and Creative Interpretation are introduced. Nanna's Drum Solo's, Finger Cymbal, and Veil Dance's will be taught, along with Dances to Traditional and Modern, Arabic and Non Arabic Music.

Nanna's name

I always wanted to know if Nanna's name was an artist's name or a real name (maybe sephardic?). It sounds sort of Spanish but I have lived in Spain for almost three years. Candelaria sounds to me rather like a fantasy-name, at least totally unusual.

Went to the taping of Video Part 2.

Nanna was definitely worth singing about and I did (If anyone struck you as particularly loud it was probably me LOL). All in all a theater crowd tends to be a bit sedate but Nanna brought even that house down. Wonderful lulling into the number, with a terrific, oh hell, just everything. My only complaint was ... ONLY ONE NUMBER. But I understand (sulk).

This will be a great edition to the video collection.

About Verbena Apocrypha.

This is a little story about what “Verbena Apocrypha” is, and how it came into being.
It all started last November when Bonnie, a dear friend, in larger circles known as known as “Bonster Productions” was planning her annual Scorpio Ball. The Ball started out I’m guessing 5? years ago as a large way for Bonnie to have some fun surrounding her birthday. It soon became an annual, hugely attended, creatively put together, late night/early morning “dance” party. Personally, it’s not a scene I join so much, but when Bonnie asked me to create and perform an “Amazonian Snake Dance”, I could scarcely pass up the opportunity. The moment she said those three words I began envisioning the dance. I knew immediately what music I would choose. Amon Tobin’s “Sub Topic” had Amazonian Snake dance written all over it.

The story - Once there was a snake. The end.

Now here’s the challenge. 4 weeks to choreograph, teach it, and make what was it? 12 costumes? Sound impossible? Not if you skip sleep and eat as you warm up the glue gun. I should mention the proud fact that our costumes are constructed from recycled objects found mostly at the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse, Thrift stores and alleyways. My fearless students, those brave volunteers who stepped up to take part this daring project worked under crazy pressure and had to add several extra rehearsals to their week. It was madness. We did the show for Scorpio Ball ’06 – Tropic of Scorpio. What did I think of our show after accomplishing the deed? I thought I went temporarily insane and a whole gaggle of women had willingly joined me.
Knowing that 3 weeks lacks suitable time for any performance project, I didn’t expect that every thing came across in shining perfection. Having no control over the time limit, I was happy just knowing we’d made it to the finish line.

It’s now been 2 months that we began reworking the project. I’m not certain that we can ever have the time I would want to polish and perfect the numbers. I still want to add quite a few touches to the costuming, and I think we're still a little “wobbly”. But we signed up to follow through, so on we go in two short weeks.

While I’m putting out all my disclaimers, I should also mention that Amazonian Snake Dancers don’t exactly do Arabic Style Belly Dance. See, one of the main things I thought I should explain is that this is very much an experimental project.
I’m mentioning this because, up to this point, Maya has performed dances that are pretty straightforward Belly Dance. This is not our usual presentation. Should you happen to catch one, or even both of these upcoming shows, I wouldn’t want to leave you confused as to how it relates to Belly Dance, or what I “normally” do. So yes, we are using some familiar moves, and others, not so much so.

What is a useful item you can take from my story? That, experimentation is way fun, but at the same time a risky, little bit crazy thing to do. Yes, I’m putting it all out there for all to see and judge. I’ve done “alternative” projects before, but never have I gotten such a large group of people involved, nor have I shared with the larger Belly Dance community. It’s a change for me because I am not sticking to the safety of familiarity nor the expectations of what many have seen of me before. But there’s a thrill I get in challenging myself and others to participate pretty much in an act of insane creativity. I’m pretty certain no one will be left bleeding, and hopefully no crying either. I’ve always found dancing to demand endless hard work, and a lot of guts, maybe even a tear or two.
But it gives me a charge in life for which feel lucky and privileged.

Good bye Amira! Forever Nanna!

Tonight Amira was packed. The Pan-Arabian restaurant was full and everybody was just trying to stay a little bit longer. Nanna was performing tonight, as she has being doing for the last 13 years at the restaurant close to the corner of 17th St and Valencia St in San Francisco. Even though, tonight was a special night. Tonight was the last night Amira will have Nanna as a performer. The well known Arabian restaurant changed owners and probably will not be the same as usual (rumor is that will actually turn into a complete different cuisine).

Nanna danced better than ever. She danced alone on stage, she danced with costumers, and she danced, talked, hugged, made jokes, and blended with the public. That was Nanna's night and she said bye the only way she knows: dancing.

Her performance started dancing while playing her finger cymbals, followed by a piece in veils. After that she danced a long solo and the phrase "Hips of Fury" had a whole different meaning. I saw her performing several times but tonight she was just incredible!

The fact Amira is closing (at least the way we know it) doesn't means at all that Nanna's belly dance career will finish as well. This probably will mark a new beginning. Even though, the restaurant she called her "home away from home" is not going be there anymore and for sure, for Nanna and the other excellent belly dancers and fans, a very important stage will no longer exist. Amira will be missed and it was GREAT to see Nanna for the last time performing at her “home”.

Hey everybody - I'm Jenni! I was just thinking, there should be a Nanna tribe - so I searched, and lo and behold!

I had heard her name on Tribe before, but just recently I saw her clips on Youtube - she just seems so happy, sweet, and natural when she dances.

Nanna was just AMAZING at Cafe Bellie and her troupe Maya was also incredibly good. Unfortunately even I took several pics with my good ol' digital camara they turned out blurry. =~(

At least I was there to see it.

(PS: Hopefully no more braids are gonna start flying around)
