“UNDERBELLY”
(A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF DANCER PRINCESS FARHANA)
WEST COAST PREMIERE SCREENING !
THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2008, 7:30PM
“Underbelly”, a feature-length documentary by award-winning director Steve Balderson, will make its West Coast Premiere Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Tribal Fest!
Providing the viewer with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of contemporary American belly dance, as well as one woman’s personal journey, “Underbelly” traces a year in the life of international star Princess Farhana. Shot on locations across the globe (including loads of footage from Tribal Fest 2007). “Underbelly” is as insightful, inspirational and educational as it is raunchy and hilarious! It reflects the view from the stage and the personal lives of the dancers, while covering the dance itself - how it enriches and heals lives - and addresses the raging controversy Princess Farhana generated by pioneering the fusion of belly dance with classic burlesque.
Candid interviews with stars of the field such as Kajira Djoumahna, Samantha Riggs, Onca O’Leary, Rachel Brice, Lee Ali, Rachel Lazarus Soto, Marta Schill, Politti Ashcraft, Blume Bauer and John Compton bump up against the opinions of students and hobbyists. Outrageous differences in opinion are offered by belly dance purists and innovators alike, as well as burlesque stars like Miss Dirty Martini, Jo Weldon and Kate Valentine. Performances by Princess Farhana, comedian/dancer Margaret Cho, Blacksheep Belly Dance, Rachel Brice, Jim Boz , Tempest, illuminate the range of Oriental dance styles, the relationship between burlesque and belly dance, and how each artist puts a personal signature on the world’s oldest dance, as it’s performed today.

“Holds nothing back!”
FILM THREAT
“UNDERBELLY is so well done and feels so complete that it almost transcends the subject matter and becomes a documentary about passion…an unexpected source of inspiration!”

May 4
12:30-2:30
Workshop I - Dynamic Combinations for Any Kind of Music
Amara will drill a series of short combinations focusing on strength, flexibility, balance, isolation, and layering. Then we will rework the combinations by changing their speed, size, and quality (gooey, sharp, and shimmies) in order to assist in our visual presentation of any kind of music.
These combinations and exercises can be applied to create both choreographies and improvisations.
2:45-4:45
Workshop II - Fusion Techniques
Amara takes a unique approach to this emerging form as she presents techniques and tools on how to create Fusion with ANY dance form. Learn the differences between sequential and simultaneous fusion concepts, explore where to find various dance elements to fuse, and discuss issues of when and why to fuse.
Fusion is a great way to add to your current vocabulary, foster creativity, and push your dancing to new heights.
This workshop is appropriate for all levels and all dance forms.

May 23-25th
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 2:07 AMTribal Ford 2008
New exciting addition to teachers list!
May 23rd-25th
We are happy to announce news of this years Tribal Ford.
Lindsey Macqueen and Angela Noble will be working together to bring you Tribal Ford 2008. They share a common passion in Tribal Bellydance and they previously danced together when Lindsey returned from the States in 2002. Angela’s business, Tribe Zuza will provide the administrative side of things so you can expect the same continued format and quality which you have come to know and love. The spectacular venue of Ford castle remains unchanged: we will continue to take up residence for the weekend.
The price of the weekend includes all workshops, hafla and meals. The menus will have a Middle Eastern flavour in keeping with the theme of the weekend. If you have any special dietary requirements please make sure we know well in advance. There are tea and coffee making facilities available in the communal kitchen along with a machine for soft drinks and snacks. The bar will be open in the evenings.
The castle is a field study centre so the accommodation is basic but rooms are clean and comfortable. All bathrooms are shared. Group rooms have 4-9 beds but singles and twin rooms are available.
Classes start on Friday evening and finish Sunday afternoon with no limitations on how many you attend. We begin the Saturday night with a fabulous banquet in the Great Hall followed by performances. The hafla continues into the wee small hours with plenty of chances to show off your latest moves while wearing your new designs purchased from the well stocked tribal souk.
If you find yourself all danced out, why not take a walk around the extensive Castle grounds, or visit the church and village hall with there beautiful murals.
Prices will remain the same as last year:
Group room £245 (4-9 people)
Shared room £265 (2-3 people)
Single room £280
Secure your place for this ever popular event now with a non-refundable deposit of £50. Payment can be made via the website or by cheque, payable to Tribe Zuza. Please send an SAE if you require confirmation of your booking. The balance should be paid in full by Friday 21st March 2008. Places are limited and we have already received a great number of enquiries, so do not delay!

SUNDAY MAY 11th. DRUM WORKSHOPS

*****
ARAB DRUM WORKSHOPS "SAIDI, SAUDI, SUDASI" (SSS): Sunday
1pm - 3pm, $25 at door only.
Students may bring their Arabic Tabla, Dumbek, Darabuka, Riqq, Duff, Muzhar or Frame drum. Karim will teach these three dynamic
rhythms, emphasizing the Arab technique of double off-hand taks and running method. Students will learn how these rhythms propel
specific dance styles from around the Arab world. Karim engages all levels from advanced beginner (someone with basic skills) to advanced intermediate.
Every level will be adequately challenged and will benefit from the ensemble approach.
---SAIDI (Southern Egyptian) is used for cane dance, ghawazee, pop and folk music. Karim will teach a four part Saidi with emphasis on the empty first beat, and slow yet bubbling tempo.
---SAUDI (Arabian Peninsula) is used for "Khaliji" urban and popular folk music. Karim will teach the polyrhythmic multipart version that illustrates the Afro-Indo influence.
---SUDASI (Lebanese and Palestinian) is used for Dabka unisex line dance. Karim will teach this unique yet common 6/4 rhythm with variations to accent stomp choreographies.
RIQQ (ARAB TAMBOURINE): : Sunday 3:30pm - 5:30pm, $25 at door only.
The "Riqq" tambourine is the lead percussion instrument in the Arabic orchestra and classical ensemble. It is played with the fingers on
both the skin and the cymbals. The technique calls for three different holding positions and techniques. In addition to Arabic music, these
instruments are widely used in Turkish, Iranian, Balkan, Gypsy and Mediterranean music. Students will learn technique, stamina, rhythmic
repertoire and various ethnic styles.
Karim Nagi is recognized as one of the foremost performers of the Arabic style Riqq in the USA. He has performed Riqq with the Sharq
Ensemble, Chicago Oriental Ensemble, Boston Camerata, and Simon Shaheen. He has taught Riqq at the New England Conservatory, Tufts University, and Arabic Music Retreat and the Heartland Seminar on Arab Music. He has authored a comprehensive Instructional Riqq
