    Taxeem (April 12, 2008 - 9:45 to 11:45am):
An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the taxeem, with an emphasis on arms and hands, introducing dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the “Tribal Frame” as well as polishing transitions. We will address such issues as timing, musical and personal interpretation, illusions of the boneless dancer, and sensual vs sexual.

    Hot and Spicy (April 12, 2008 - 1:00 to 3:00pm):
An exhilarating and inspirational workshop, designed to be accessible to all levels, with a playful array of drills, combos and hot new moves. Through a series of technical drills and improvised combos students will engage in such topics as dynamic phrasing, musicality, personal expression and the art of creating your own combos.

    The Art of Professional Performance (April 13, 2008 - 12:00 to 2:00pm):
This innovative workshop is open to dancers of all levels and backgrounds. After hours of preparation in classes, practice in front of the mirror, and rehearsal, how are you presenting yourself as a professional performer? This workshop offers the tools both practical and theoretical to break into or enhance your professional appearance. It will provide insight into job seeking, costuming, make-up tips, promotional packages, as well as explore the illusive notions of stage presence, charisma, "handling" the audience and much more. This workshop is tailored to the participants present. Bring any promotional material you have on yourself, dance photos, your make-up, a costume you are working on, and dress in comfortable clothing.

Don't forget......Sterling Painton will start off the April 12th event with Yoga Stretches for Belly Dancers from 8:30 to 9:30. Also, we will have an on-site buffet lunch for $5. And lastly......Mira Betz and Sadiqa (formerly PurpleMatilda) will perform at Zafira Dance Company's Speakeasy Cabaret Evening Show on April 12th. For more info and tickets: www.zafiradance.com

  • Based on the feedback we received last year, we are going to be having two separate and distinct shows on Sept. 5th & 6th of the 2008 Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive. We will also be having an after-party hafla on Sunday the 7th.

We are looking for talented artists to create distinct and unique shows that encompass a wide range of styles and dancers. We give preference to Intensive participants, people travelling from out-of-state, truly gifted performers, and those that can follow directions. Some locals will be encouraged to perform at the Sunday night after-party as many travellers will be leaving at that time.

Our selection committee will review the applications and send out offers to those that we feel would fit our vision best. There are always more applicants than space available and lack of inclusion does not mean lack of appreciation in any way shape or form.

If you or your troupe are interested in applying for consideration to perform in one of the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive shows, please be advised that all applications must be complete and all requirements met by our deadline of April 5th.

    Requirements:
DVD/You Tube performance video: Minimum run time of 1 minute with a maximum run time of 3 minutes. Please submit a performance within the genre or style in which you would like to perform.

Dance resume: Professional resume with contact information, affiliations, performances, training and education, etc...

Performance description: Minimum one paragraph with detailed information on style/genre of performance you would like a chance to dance to at the show.

Please send all requirements together either to amaryllis@shimmythis.com, please use subject: LVBDI Performance app, or you may mail to:

    Amaryllis Carter
    6470 Shining Sand Ave
    Las Vegas, NV 89142

Please submit or mail your application no later then April 5th. No applications will be reviewed or considered after that date.

    Thanks so much,
    The LVBDI Directors

Core Focus Fusion: Belly Dance & Pilates with Freyja: 12-2pm
The focus of this workshop is on moving from the core with strength and grace through combining Pilates and Belly Dance. Pilates is an excellent discipline to incorporate into belly dance practice for many reasons. Not only does it condition the muscles that are necessary to develop a healthy and strong dance posture while deepening body awareness, it is also an excellent way to learn and improve the muscle isolations that are used in the dance. Although we will learn fundamental Pilates exercises and then apply them to various belly dance movements, this unique format isn't about doing Pilates and then drilling belly dance but literally fusing both practices into one. You will develop a true understanding and ability of how to isolate the core muscles that are essential in the dance. By applying the techniques from this workshop, you can expect improved dance posture, cleaner isolations, increased torso flexibility and a better understanding of your core and the role it plays in your dance practice.

Freyja began her study of dance in early childhood. Her dance background includes ballet, jazz, hip hop, ballroom, salsa, club dancing, flamenco, Indonesian and Indian dance. She has developed her own unique style, drawing from many of these sources. Freyja has studied American Cabaret, Turkish and Egyptian styles of belly dance as well as American tribal style, which later led to tribal fusion. She has studied with a long list of teachers, most notably Ansuya, Frederique, Jamila and Suhaila Salimpour. Freyja has taught and performed all over the United States, Canada and Europe. She is credited with excellent technique and musical interpretation, crisp isolations and original innovative choreography. As an instructor, she gives great presentation and breakdown of moves, while emphasizing proper posture and movement in order to prevent injuries and gain muscle strength. She has made an extensive study of anatomy, physiology and body mechanics, and uses this knowledge to help students master the motions and gain the needed strength and flexibility to improve their dance. Freyja's love of therapeutic healing arts led her to obtain her yoga teacher training certification at the acclaimed Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She is also certified to teach mat and apparatus Pilates classes by IMX Pilates. Freyja continues to study various movement disciplines and is currently focusing on the Alexander technique and principles of qigong to enhance her own practice and compliment her teaching.

Funk Fusion Bellydance with Cera Byer: 3-5pm
This workshop brings you Hip hop, Pop n' Lock, and Funk flava, with intense, high energy conditioning and choreography. Our warm up will focus on layered isolations including syncopated body rhythms, layering two and three dimensional movements simultaneously, and traveling shimmy layers. Then we'll move on to funk fusion combos that you can use, deconstruct, or use to create your own! Come away challenged, inspired, and with lots to work on at home.

Cera has been studying dance, music, and theater since the age of 4. Her dance experience includes Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Afro-Haitian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, Kathak of India, Dunham Technique, Salsa, Samba, Tribal Bellydance, classical and contemporary Persian dance, Flamenco, and most recently, Capoiera. In addition to being the founder and Artistic Director of Damage Control Dance Theater, Cera has performed professionally with Shahrzad Dance Company (Classical and Contemporary Persian dance), PULSE Modern Dance Ensemble (Modern), Ultra Gypsy Dance Theater Company (Innovative Tribal Fusion Bellydance), Rara Tou Limen (San Francisco's only Carnaval contingent representing Haiti), as well as presenting her solo choreography in festivals, concert stages, lecture demonstrations, and private events across the Bay Area and beyond. Cera holds a BA in Dance (Performance and Choreography), with an emphasis in World Music and Dance from San Francisco State University, and certifications in Group Fitness Instruction (YMCA) and Pilates Mat (Sanchez St. Studios). Presently, she owns and operates ShoeBox Studio in San Francisco, in addition to teaching dance daily at a local high school.
