I've just been informed that one of the presentors (the one who was to instruct the choreography portion of the workshop) has accepted a conflicting engagement.

Kara Nomadica CD update!!!

Good morning everyone!
We are pleased to announce that we are going through the final bits of recording and editing before we send our tracks off to be mastered and mass-produced! Hopefully we will have the LP ready to sell sometime in April.

We are very grateful to those of you who have prepaid the LP for being so patient with us. We really tried to get this thing finished this winter, and we apologize that this didn't happen--we want to provide you with the best possible recordings, so instead of rushing the album out we decided to postpone it.
That being said, we are VERY pleased with the results so far and will be delivering to you a professional product.

Once we release the album we will be putting together a CD release party and will be available for touring around later this year.
If you are putting together a bellydance workshop weekend somewhere and want a great live band drop us a line!!!

Another bulletin will be sent out the day we send the tracks out with a more precice release date!
Thank you for all of your amazing support and wonderful compliments.
We couldn't do this without such amazing fans and audience!

I am incredibly excited to announce that in September 2009, Wiggles of the West (formerly of Reno, NV) and the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive will be uniting forces to create an incredibly diverse and comprehensive event experience! Although the two events will remain separate entities, we are working together to merge the activities into 5 solid days of incredible workshops, contests, shows, and shopping—all in the fabulous city of Las Vegas, NV.

The Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive has organized multiple tracks of level and style specific workshops in Vegas for the last 6 years. Wiggles of the West brings 12 years of belly dance competition experience to the table. It is our belief that by joining these two reputable events together, we will create a diverse and world-class experience for belly dancers in the Entertainment Capital of the World.

I am formulating a lecture and video series on the Dancing in the Golden Era of Egyptian Film. It will span over several weeks and be in several parts, and it will include watching and talking about the dancing of each dancer.

With each dancer, we will discuss technique, performance, era costuming, essence of their dance, their biographies, and more, as well as introduce the singers who sometimes appear in the scene with them.

You all know how flippin' precarious this tribe thing has been lately. Grrrrrr. I'm obviously an addict and really hate it when it goes down. So, as a back up plan, should tribe fall down and never get up again, please join us at Tribe Refugee Bellydancers. It's another networking site (not as great as tribe but better than myspace and it will do in an emergency). Amaryllis started a "group" there dedicated to National Bellydance Events. It's just a back up, but better to not lose all these fab connections....

Flamenco workshop in Iowa for belly dancers, Latin dancers, and others

The weekend of November 9-11, we're holding an "Essence of Flamenco" workshop in Iowa City, Iowa featuring guest artist Mariano Parra from New York.

The event is designed for the needs of dancers who would like to incorporate something of flamenco posture, arm carriage, movement, and attitude into their personal styles, and equip themselves to move credibly to music that includes a Spanish flavor. No prior flamenco experience is required. The workshop is designed for the needs of:

* Belly dancers who specialize in American Tribal Style and like to use flamenco posture, hand floreos, and other techniques in their dance
* Belly dancers who specialize in Egyptian style who want to emulate the Andalusian-flavored pieces by Samia Gamal, Tahia Carioca, Mahmoud Reda, and others. It includes dancers who like to use music (such as El Hub Kulu) that contains Andalusian elements
* Flamenco dancers wishing to polish their basic technique under the guidance of a master instructor
* Latin dancers who wish to enhance their dance stylings with flamenco movement
* Ballet, modern dance, and other artists who wish to add some flamenco techniques to their repertoires
* Dancers of any form who wish to perform Gypsy-inspired pieces
* Dancers of any form who wish to use skirt work in their choreographies

Volunteers, where would most events be without them?

Volunteers, where would most events be without them?

They are a very important part of the make-up of events. If you have mean Volunteers, then that is going to reflect on your event. So you want nice happy people that give off a good vibe.

But it is hard to find a bunch of those type of people.

So then you take the next step and try and pay them and offer them incentives to help out. Maybe a small hourly wage, free admission and or a t-shirt, a deal on a meal, but even then sometimes it is hard to find enough.

So my question is: WHAT DOES A PERSON WANT TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER?

What do you want from an event promoter to work say a four (4) hour shift at an event that you would go to anyway?

Mahmoud Reda will return to the Iowa City area on July 27-29, 2007 to teach workshops in Egyptian dance. The event includes:

* Early bird arrivals: showing of the Reda movie Gharam fi al-Karnak with English subtitles on Thursday evening
* A hafla Friday night featuring performances by workshop attendees (some professionals, some students)
* Workshops during the day on Saturday and Sunday
* A show of entirely professional dancers on Saturday night

The workshops will be held in an air-conditioned facility.

For those not familiar with Mahmoud Reda, he was the founder of an entire performing art in Egypt, that of the theatrical presentation of folkloric dance. He founded Reda Troupe in 1959, starred in several movies that also featured his choreography, and became known as Egypt's greatest choreographer.

Even if you normally dance barefoot, be sure to wear either dance shoes or socks to this workshop to protect the soles of your feet and your knees. Reda's dance style involves a large amount of spins, Arabesques, and other pivoting moves, and your feet need to be able to pivot freely without sticking to the floor.

Al Janoub, the Tennessee Chapter of MECDA, proudley presents DaVid of Scandinavia in his first workshop and show East of the Mississippi. DaVid is an internationally acclaimed performer and instructor specializing in Raks Sharqi, Bhangra, and Bollywood and one of the co-founders of the Ethnic Dance Academy in San Diego.

Please join us October 13-14 in Nashville, Tennessee in welcoming DaVid to the Southeast as he teaches workshops in Raks Sharqi and Bollywood Fusion. Both workshops will be held Saturday, October 13 at the Global Education Center at 4822 Charlotte Pike in Nashville. There will be a performance Saturday night following the workshops. Kami Liddle:
Kami’s style is what she calls a modern fusion of an ancient dance. Kami performs both as a solo artist and also collaborates with other dancers. She is a guest artist for The Indigo, directed by
Rachel Brice, and has also worked with Samatha Riggs of Boom Boom Bollywood on choreography and periodically performs with the company. Kami was nominated for “Best Kept Secret” and “Best Interpretive Artist” for 2005 Zaghareet Magazine and won the title “Entertainer of the Year 2005” at the Wiggles of the West. Come prepared to dance your heart out! In this class, we will cover the fundamentals of the firey 9/8 Rom rhythm, and learn basic footwork, hip work and some of the very expressive arm movements that are integral to this dance. We will watch a short clip of source footage, and cultural background will be discussed as well. All levels welcome.

Mardi will teach an original choreography each day, reflecting her affection for the smooth and simple punctuated with isolation combinations. Also known fondly as D.I.D., or Spirithaven. This smaller intimate event is held annually in Stuart Virginia on beautiful Spirithaven farm, hosted by Touch the Earth, the first weekend of June. Excellent drum and dance workshops all weekend, regular instructors include Zafira Dance Company, Daveed Korup of Turku, and Baraka Mundi.
