Herbal Insect Repellents

Creating your own mosquito repellents is a safe and effective
alternative to
commercial repellents. Using herbs and essential oils, you can prepare
your own
mosquito repellents, and products for your pets and home with little
effort.

The most frequently used natural mosquito repellent is citronella
essential oil.
The citronella essential oil is extracted from the plant Cymbopagon
nardus and
has a pleasant citrus-like aroma. Usually the citronella is simply
mixed with a
base such as oil or alcohol at a strength of 5-10% (see ESSENTIAL OILS for
precautions).
Citronella Repellent © Millie Fodor
2 ounces witch hazel extract
60 drops citronella essential oil

Preparation: Put 2 ounces of witch hazel into a lotion or spray
bottle. Add 60
drops of citronella essential oil. Label properly. Shake well before
each use.

This is approximately a 5 % dilution. For a 10 % dilution add 120 drops of
citronella. Witch hazel extract is non-drying and medicinally soothing
to insect
bites. You may use olive oil, rubbing alcohol, vodka, or prepare a
lotion in
place of the witch hazel.

Citronella Essential Oil
Shop for Citronella Essential Oil

Citronella Lotion © Millie Fodor
2 ounces distilled water
2 ounces olive oil
120 drops citronella essential oil

A lotion is an emulsification of water and oil. To prepare: Put water
into a
deep mixing bowl. Begin to drizzle in the oil slowly and beat
vigorously with a
wire whisk. By the time all the oil is added you should have a nice
creamy white
lotion. Stir in the citronella oil. Pour into a lotion bottle and label.
Herbal Repellent Oil © Millie Fodor
1 part fresh pennyroyal
1 part fresh thyme
1/2 part fresh basil
1/2 part neem leaf (if available)
tea tree essential oil
citronella essential oil
olive oil

Pick your fresh herbs. Manually remove any dirt then set them in a
sunny place
until the herbs are wilted.

Using 1/4 cup as your part, measure 1/4 cup of pennyroyal and thyme,
and 1/8 cup
basil and neem leaf into a crock pot. Pour in enough olive oil to
cover the
herbs plus another inch of oil (approximately 1 cup). Turn the crock
pot on low
temperature and heat the herbs for about 3 hours. An alternative way
to prepare
your oil extraction is to place the herbs in a clear glass jar and set
it in the
sun for about five days. Shake it once or twice a day.

When you have finished heating your oil, strain your oil through a
cheesecloth
lined strainer. Squeeze out as much oil as possible. Measure out how
much oil
you now have. For each ounce of oil add 10 drops of citronella
essential oil and
5 drops of tea tree oil.

Pour into lotion bottle and label.

VARIATIONS

You can use this herbal oil in place of the olive oil in the
CITRONELLA LOTION
recipe.
Herbal Closet Sachet © Millie Fodor
1 part Rosemary
1 part Cedarwood Chips
1/2 part Oak Moss
1 part Pennyroyal
1 part Chrysanthemum Flowers
1 part Cloves
1 part Eucalyptus Leaf
1 part Orris Root

Blend the herbs together then package in muslin bags. You may add
essential oils
such as cedarwood to strengthen the aroma. Hang the bags in your
closet and
place in your chest of drawers. Variations: You can choose any
assortment of the
moth repellent herbs to formulate your own sachet blends. Orris root
is used in
this recipe as a fixative. It helps to hold the scent in the sachet.

Among the good reasons for preparing your own repellents, protecting
yourself
from toxic chemicals is the most important. Fifty to sixty percent of
what is
applied to the skin is absorbed internally. Because our body-care
products often
contain chemicals that are inadequately researched or known to produce
a variety
of ill effects, it has become important for us to look for ways to
minimize our
use of them.

PRECAUTION

If you find that you need to apply repellents several times throughout
the day,
and you are doing this everyday, I recommend that you make several
different
repellents and use them in alternation.

To condition greasy hair: Calendula, Horsetail, Lemon juice, Lemon-
Balm, Lavender, Mints, Rosemary, Southernwood, Witch Hazel and Yarrow.

To prevent dandruff: Burdock root, Chamomile, Garlic and Onion bulbs

(powerful but unpleasantly scented ), Goosegrass, Parsley, rosemary,
Southernwood, Stinging Nettle and Thyme.

To soothe scalp irritation: catmint (leaves and flowering tops),
Chamomile, Comfrey.

To provide a hair tonic ( giving body and luster ): Calendula,
Goosegrass, Horsetail, Linden flowers, Nasturtium, Parsley, Rosemary,
Sage, Southernwood, Stinging Nettles and Watercress.

Hair Treatments

Make a herbal oil using one of the above herbs and a polyunsaturated
vegetable oil such as peach kernel, almond or sunflower.
Alternatively, add 6 drops of essential oil to 2 tablespoons of almond
oil or any vegetable oil. Warm the oil, pour a small amount into your
palm and rub your hands together. Massage well into the scalp and
along the hair strands. Repeat as necessary. Cover the head with foil
and a plastic shower cap and wrap in a hot towel, replacing the towel
when it cools. Try to leave on for 20 to 30 minutes for greatest
penetration, then wash off with a mild shampoo.

Quick Herbal Shampoo
Pour one application of a mild baby shampoo into a cup and add 2
tablespoons of a strong decoction of your selected herb, or 4 drops of
essential oil. Mix together and use in the normal manner.

Soapwort Shampoo

A very gentle cleansing shampoo which doesn't make much lather - but
then lather does not equal cleaning power.
2 Tbs finely chopped Soapwort root or a handful of leaves and stems
1 large handful of herb ( see above )
2 1/2 cups boiling water

Pour the boiling water over the soapwort and herb and infuse for at
least 30 minutes. Strain and use when cool. About half a cup should be
enough for average-length hair.

Dry Shampoo
2 Tbs powdered Orris Root
2 Tbs powdered Arrowroot.

Mix together. Part the hair in narrow regular bands and sprinkle the
powder along each row. Leave on for 10 minutes to absorb any grease
and then brush out vigorously and thoroughly until the hair is shiny.

Herbal Hair Rinses

Use these after your shampoo as the quickest and easiest way to
improve hair shine. Prepare the herbal rinse before shampooing so it
will have
cooled when you are ready to use it.

1 Tbs selected herb
1 Tbs cider vinegar ( or lemon juice for fair hair )
4 cups boiling water

Infuse the herb in water until cool. Strain well. Add the vinegar.
Pour through the hair, massaging the scalp. Catch the runoff in a bowl
and repeat until either your patience or arms give out. If the final
rinse is of cool rather than warm water, it makes all the outer cells
on the hair strands lie flat, fiving a smooth, shiny finish.

Rosewater Pick-Me-Up

This is an excellent way to clean and revive your hair between
shampoos. Orange-flower water can be used instead, or Lavender water
for greasy hair. You will need a number of 4 inch squares of gauze
dipped in Rosewater. Force the gauze over a natural bristle brush and
stroke through the hair in sections, removing dirt as you brush.
Repeat with fresh gauze squares until the cloth picks up no more dirt.
This
treatment also gives a lovely fragrance to the hair.

Substance," was widely regarded as a master healing plant. The
Ancient Egyptians referred to aloe as the "plant of immortality" and
Included it among the funerary gifts buried with the pharaohs. In
Recent decades, medical research has confirmed and extended many of
The health claims for the shining bitter substance (used topically or
Consumed as a liquid) that is the heart of aloe.

Here is a brief review of its merits.

Helps Heal Wounds
The bulk of the aloe leaf is filled with gel, 96% water with the other
4% containing 75 known substances. Applied to wounds, aloe gel is a
Mild anesthetic, relieving itching, swelling, and pain: it also is
Antibacterial and antifungal, increases blood flow to wounded areas,
And stimulates fibroblasts, the skin cells responsible for wound
Healing. An animal-based study in the Journal of the American
Podiatric Medical Association found that both oral and topical aloe
Preparations speed wound healing. Animals were given either aloe
(100mg/kg body weight) in
Their drinking water for two months or 25% aloe Vera cream applied
Directly to wounds for six days. Aloe had positive effects in both
Cases. The size of wounds decreased 62% in the animals taking oral
Aloe compared to a 51% in the control group. Topical aloe produced a
51% decrease in wound size compared to a 33% in the control group.

Supports Surgical Recovery
Aloe decreases surgical recovery time, according to a report in the
Journal of Dermatologic Surgery and Oncology. Eighteen acne patients
Underwent facial dermabrasion surgery, in which lesions are scraped
Away. Dressings were applied to their faces, with half of each
person's face receiving the standard dressing coated with surgical
Gel, and the other half with aloe added to this dressing. The half of
The face treated with aloe healed approximately 72 hours faster than
The other side.
Dermatologist James Fulton, M.D., of Newport Beach, California,
Principal author of the report, uses topical aloe in his practice to
Speed wound healing. "Any wound we treat, whether it's suturing a cut
Or removing a skin cancer, heals better with aloe Vera on it," he states.

Soothes Burns
In a study in the Journal of the Medical Association of Thailand, 27
Patients with moderate burn wounds were treated with a gauze coated in
Either aloe gel or Vaselineâ„¢ (petroleum jelly). The burns healed more
Quickly in the aloe group, with an average healing time of 12 days
Compared to 18 days for the group using Vaseline.

Minimizes Frostbite Damage
A study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine established that
Aloe works for frostbite as well. Researchers gave standard
Treatments for frostbite (antibiotics, ibuprofen, and re-warming) to
154 patients with mild to severe frostbite. Of patients who
Additionally received aloe Vera cream, 67.9% healed without any tissue
Loss (amputation) compared to 32.7% in the control group. Researchers
Concluded that aloe prevented a decrease of blood flow to the frozen
Tissues, a common cause
Of tissue loss in frostbite.

Screens Out Radiation
Aloe protects against skin damage from X rays, according to
Researchers at Hoshi University in Japan publishing in the journal
Yakugaku Zasshi. They found that aloe was an effective antioxidant,
Mopping up the free radicals caused by radiation, and that it
Protected two of the body's healing substances, superoxide dismutase
(an antioxidant enzyme) and
Glutathione (an amino acid which stimulates the immune system).

Heals Psoriasis Lesions
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Tropical
Medicine and International Health, 60 patients with chronic psoriasis
Were given a 0.5% aloe Vera extract in a mineral oil creme. The
Ointment was applied three times daily for five consecutive days (15
Applications total per week) for four weeks. When patients were
Checked after eight months, far more psoriasis skin lesions had healed
In the aloe group (82.8%) than in the placebo group (7.7%). Further,
83.3% of the aloe group were considered cured of their psoriasis
Compared to only 6.6% of the placebo group.

Eases Intestinal Problems
Aloe Vera juice can be effective for treating inflammatory bowel
Disease, according to a study in the Journal of Alternative Medicine.
Ten patients were given two ounces of aloe juice, three times daily,
For seven days. After one week, all patients were cured of diarrhea,
Four had improved bowel regularity, and three reported increased
energy. Researchers concluded that aloe was able to rebalance the
intestines by "regulating gastrointestinal pH while improving
gastrointestinal motility, increasing stool specific gravity, and
reducing populations of certain fecal microorganisms, including
yeast." Other studies have shown that aloe vera juice helps to
detoxify the bowel, neutralize stomach acidity, and relieve
constipation and gastric ulcers.

Reduces Blood Sugar in Diabetes
Aloe reduced the blood sugar levels in diabetics, as reported in
Hormone Research. Five patients with adult (non-insulin- dependent)
diabetes were given 1/2 teaspoon of aloe extract daily for up to 14
weeks. Blood sugar levels were reduced in all patients by an average
of 45%, with no change in their total weight.

Reduces Arthritic Swelling
Aloe can help prevent arthritis and reduce the inflammation in joints
already affected by arthritis, according to the Journal of the
American Podiatric Medical Association. Aloe can also inhibit the
autoimmune reaction associated with certain forms of arthritis, in
which the body attacks its own tissues. Animals were injected with a
bacterium to cause arthritic symptoms, namely inflammation and
swelling. To determine if it could prevent arthritis, aloe (150mg/kg
body weight) was injected under the skin daily for 13 days. Physical
measurements were taken daily to
determine the amount of swelling and inflammation. Several compounds
from aloe showed antiarthritic activity, according to the researchers.
One organic acid in aloe reduced inflammation by 79.7% and suppressed
the autoimmune response by 42.4%. Another aloe compound
(anthraquinone) reduced inflammation by 67.3% but had no effect on the
autoimmune response.

Curtailing HIV Infection
An extract of mannose, one of the sugars in aloe, can inhibit HIV-1
(the virus associated with AIDS). In a 1991 study in Molecular
Biotherapy, HIV-1 cells were treated in vitro (outside the body) with
a mannose extract. Aloe slowed virus reproduction by as much as 30%,
reduced viral load (total amount of the virus), suppressed the spread
of the virus from infected cells, and increased the viability (chance
of survival) of infected cells.

Nutritional Support for HIV Patients
Aloe vera juice proved to be an effective part of a nutritional
support program for HIV+ patients according to the Journal of
Advancement in Medicine. For four months, 29 patients were given 100%
pure aloe vera juice (five ounces, four times daily) along with an
essential fatty acid supplement and another supplement containing
vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Patients were told to continue
with their normal diet and not to take other supplements. After 90
days, all of the patients had fewer occurrences of opportunistic
infections, thrush, fatigue, and
diarrhea, as well as increased white blood cell counts (meaning their
immune systems were responding positively). Their assessment of
overall quality of health also improved. In 25% of the patients, aloe
apparently knocked out the virus's ability to reproduce. Researchers
found that aloe (the mannose extract and perhaps other compounds)
stimulates the body's immune system, particularly T4 helper cells,
white blood cells that activate the immune response to infection.

Stimulates Immune Response Against Cancer
Aloe may help prolong survival time and stimulate the immune system of
cancer patients, according to recent research. In a 1994 study in the
Japanese medical journal Yakhak Hoeji, mice with cancerous tumors were
given aloe orally for 14 days. While the aloe did not suppress tumor
growth, the average life span of the mice was prolonged by 22% for
those given 50mg aloe/kg body weight and by 32% for those given
100mg/kg daily. A simultaneous experiment on human cancer cells
(outside the
body) found that high doses of aloe significantly suppressed the
growth of these cancer cells. Researchers writing in Cancer Immunology
and Immunotherapy found that a compound (lectin) from aloe, when
injected directly into tumors, activated the immune system to attack
the cancer. Killer T cells, white blood cells that bind to invading
cells and destroy them, began to attack the tumor cells injected with
lectin. Aloe turns on the immune system by activating macrophages
(white blood cells which "swallow" antigens), causing the release of
immune-activating (and
anticancer) substances such as interferons, interleukines, and tumor
necrosis factor. In addition, aloe promotes the growth of normal
(non-cancerous) cells, researchers said.

Benefits Lung Cancer
Aloe's protective effect was confirmed in a study of 673 lung cancer
patients in Okinawa, Japan, published in the Japanese Journal of
Cancer Research. This survey looked at the connection between
smoking, comparative amounts of 17 plant foods in the diet, and the
occurrence of lung cancer over a five-year period. Aloe was the only
one of the plant foods that was protective against cancer. "The
results of plant epidemiology suggests that aloe prevents human
pulmonary carcinogenesis [lung cancer]," stated the researchers.
Further, aloe is "widely preventive or suppressive against various
human cancers."

Inexpensive ways to treat dandruff
Many people are affected by dandruff. Learn how to treat the problem effectively without spending a lot of money.
Dandruff is a widespread problem that regular impacts up to 70% of Americans. While this scalp condition is neither contagious nor debilitating, dandruff can lead to feelings of self-consciousness and emotional distress. Despite the commonness of the problems, many people are unsure of how to best treat dandruff or believe that professional help is necessary to eliminate the irritating flakes. By trying different methods, it is possible to find a treatment that is both highly effective and inexpensive.

There is still considerable debate over what exactly causes dandruff. Most agree that excessive amounts of the naturally occurring yeast Pityrosporum Ovale is directly involved in the formation of dandruff. Regardless of yeast levels, dandruff is also caused by the skin’s natural process of shedding cells as it regenerates. The old skin cells flake off to make room for new cells. Outside factors such as stress and weather conditions can lead to changes in skin condition that speed up the skin’s natural shedding process. However, many effective treatments are available to combat these problems.

Those with mild dandruff will find that regularly washing the scalp dramatically reduces the level of skin flaking. A specially formulated shampoo is also important in treating dandruff. Look for medicated shampoo’s containing the ingredient ketaconazole, which will work quickly to get problematic flakes under control. If a shampoo does not seem to be helping, switch to a different product that has a different base of ingredients. Not all remedies will work the same for everyone.

If you find that your hair is becoming dry or brittle from treatment, try using a deep conditioner to restore moisture to the ends of your hair. When washing, be sure to only apply the shampoo to the roots of the hair in order to avoid stripping your hair of moisture.

Natural treatments can also be employed to treat dandruff, although these options may take considerably longer to take effect. A mixture of coconut oil and lemon extract can be applied to problems areas to eliminate dandruff. Another good treatment is to regularly rinse the scalp with apple cider vinegar. Vinegar tends to restore the scalp to a healthier state and is effective at cleaning off environmental toxins that may be contributing to dandruff problems.

In addition to topical treatments, you should also take steps to ensure that your skin is properly nourished and supplements from the inside. A healthy diet based mostly on fruits and vegetables will keep skin healthy and fresh. Vitamins can also be used to fill any deficiancies that may occur in the diet. Be sure that you are getting the daily recommended levels of vitamins E, C, and D, as well as enough protein to allow skin to regenerate properly. It is vital to keep skin properly hydrated, so be sure to drink at least eight to ten glasses of water daily.

While dandruff is a pressing problems for many people, a multitude of effective and inexpensive treatments are available. Medicated shampoos offer the quickest and most convenient way to treat flaky scalps, but natural treatments can also be beneficial. If neither of these options is effective for you, consult a physician or dermatologist for further information on how to best treat your dandruff.

12 Anceint Oils of the Scriptures**

Aloes/Sandalwood — Santalum album) It is believed that aloes of the
Bible may have been fragrant sandalwood, a spice accessible to the
residents of ancient Palestine."And there came also Nicodemus, which
at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh
and Aloes, about an hundred pound weight." (John 19:39)

Cassia — (Cinnamomum cassia) Cassia was a key ingredient in the
temple incense."All thy garments smell of myrrh, and ales, and
cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad."
(Psalms 45:8)

Cedarwood — (Cedrus atlantica) From the mighty "Cedars of Lebanon"
came the fragrant and long-lasting wood used to build Solomon's
temple. "And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in
Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of thewall." (1
Kings 4:33)

Cypress — (Cupressus sempervirens) This oil is extracted from the
cypress tree, which has wood so durable that the cypress doors of
St. Peter's in Rome show no sign of decay even after 1,200
years. "He herewith him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the
oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the
forest." (Isaiah 44:14)

Frankincense — (Olibanum — Boswellia carteri) The Hebrew word for
frankincense,

Levonah (sometimes translated as "incense"), is in the Bible 22
times. "Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars
of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of
the merchant?" (Song of Solomon 3:6)

Galbanum — (Ferula gummosa) This oil has a pungent, balsamic
odor. "And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices,
stacte, and onycha, and galbanum;these sweet spices with pure
frankincense: of each there shall be a like weight."(Exodus 30:34)

Hyssop — (Hyssopus officinalis) In 1975 one writer suggested 18
different plants for the biblical hyssop. While the exact variety
may not be known, an anticeptic or cleansing property is suggested
because it was employed in many purification rites. "Purge me with
hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than
snow.(Psalms 51:7)

Myrrh — (Commiphora myrrha) Myrrh was used in burial and was highly
regarded by David and Solomon. It was one of the ingredients of the
holy anointing oil. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, and aloes,
and cinnamon." (Proverbs 7:17)

Myrtle — (myrtus communis) Myrtle branches are still used by Jews
for the Feast of Tabernacles. "Go forth unto the mount, and fetch
olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm
branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths,as it is
written." (Nehemiah 8:15)

Onycha — (Styrax benzoin) Onycha (`Oh-nigh-kah') was an ingredient
in the holy anointing oil: "And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto
thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet
spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like
weight." (Exodus 30:34)

Rose of Sharon/Cistus — Labdanum — Cistus ladanifer) This beautiful
rose has a soft honey-like scent and may be the small shrubby tree
called the rose of Sharon. "I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of
the valley." (Song of Solomon 2:1)

Spikenard — (Nardostachys jatamansi) A very expensive oil, spikenard
was sealed in alabaster boxes. "And [Jesus] being in Bethany, in the
house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman
having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard, very precious, and
she brake the box, and poured it on his head." (Mark 14:3)
2 oz baking soda
3 Tbsp of powdered oatmeal (optional)
1 oz citric acid
4 drops of Patchouli
4 drops Ylang Ylang
2 drops sandalwood

Mix baking soda, oatmeal & citric acid together . Set aside.
Melt cocoa butter in microwave or "bain-marie". Add essential oils.
Add dry ingredients to melted cocoa butter.
Pour in ice cube trays or soap moulds. Place in freezer for 30
minutes. Store in jars or plastic bags. Keep cool

To use, place 1-2 cubes (if using ice cube tray) to 1/2 filled tub.

Tip: Before pouring mixture into moulds, i like to sprinkle some
dried herbs at the bottom. I like to use rosebus, whole rosehips or
rose petals to decorate each melt.

Sure, it’s great to find that one magical product that solves a very specific household problem. (The Gonzo Pet Hair Lifter a multiple-cat-owning friend received as a Christmas gift truly has no equal.) But the truth is, you need little more than the following six ingredients—baking soda, borax, lemon juice, salt, olive oil and white vinegar—to clean just about anything in your home (pet hair excluded). Here are just a few of the many uses for these, well, magical multi-taskers:

1. Baking soda: Acts as a scrub to remove hard water stains; polishes metal; deodorizes pretty much anything it touches (try stashing some in the fridge).

2. Borax: Mixed with three parts water, it makes a paste for cleaning carpet stains; mixed with ¼ part lemon juice, it cleans stainless steel and porcelain. (Note: although borax is a natural substance, you still shouldn’t eat it—and neither should your kids or pets.)

3. Lemon: Deodorizes and cuts grease on counter tops; rubbed on cutting boards, it bleaches stains and disinfects; combined with baking soda, it removes stains from plastic food storage containers.

4. Salt: Another natural scrubber—sprinkle it on cookware or oven surfaces, then rub; add citrus juice to turn it into an effective rust remover.

5. White vinegar: Deodorizes and disinfects; combine with water (and a little liquid soap—I know, it feels like cheating) to clean windows, mirrors, and floors; use at full strength in a spray bottle to fight mold and mildew.

6. Olive Oil: Mix two parts oil with one part lemon juice and use as a natural wood polish. (Save the really good stuff for dinner.)

One added bonus of using natural cleaners: as part of your spring cleaning regimen, you can now clear out all those bottles of specialized (and possibly toxic) potions.

Basic Sea Salt Scrub: Combine one cup of basic sea salt to half a cup
of almond oil. Make sure that the sea salt is finely ground, since
coarse grains can cause harm to the skin. Gently rub the body scrub
over the hands and the legs and massage gently in circular motion to
exfoliate the dead skin. Take a dip in the tub for a while and rinse
with a hydrating shower gel.

Walnut and Honey Scrub: Ground a cup of walnuts and add to it three
tablespoon of honey and three tablespoon of fresh milk. Gently scrub
over the body to exfoliate the dead skin with walnuts and nourish the
skin with the goodness of milk and honey. This body scrub is works
great in winters as well since it cleanses and moisturizes the body
without being too harsh on the skin.

Exotic Coffee Scrub: Take 1 cup of finely ground coffee and add half
a cup of fresh yogurt to it. Gently rub the paste onto your body and
massage in circular motion. This body scrub will not require a
moisturizing treatment afterwards since the yogurt makes the skin soft
and supple. After the exfoliation have a warm water shower or a dip in
the tub to discover the goodness of this body scrub.

Refreshing Mint Scrub: Take a cup of fresh mint leaves and a cup of
yogurt and blend it using a mixer or a blender. Add ½ cup of finely
ground chickpeas and form a uniform paste. Gently scrub the mixture
over your body and rinse off with a hot water bath. The chickpea flour
helps exfoliate your skin, the yogurt nourishes it and the mint
refreshes it. This is a truly refreshing and vitalizing body scrub.

Sweet Chocolate Scrub: Mix one cup of cocoa butter and ½ cup fine
sugar to form a chocolate scrub. Gently scrub it over the hands, legs
and the entire body to exfoliate with the sugar. The sugar exfoliates
the skin as the cocoa butter nourishes it and makes you feel good with
the aroma of cocoa. This is a perfectly pampering body scrub that you
can try over the weekend!

Plant Tansy around the foundation of houses - ants do not like to pass
through it. Same goes for catnip - a sprinkling of it along an ant
path will encourage them to turn around and leave.

Houseflies don't like basil, clover flowers and sweet bays. A bouquet
of green and purple basil, sweet bay and red clover not only looks
and smells good in the kitchen, but keeps away the flies as well.

Mint repels mice - Long stems of it placed along the eaves in the
attic will encourage mice to leave.

Anise will attract mice, so a little anise oil or a few anise seeds
mixed with peanut butter is far more effective than cheese as bait
for a mousetrap.
Valerian is also good bait for mice, as well as for rats.

Bay leaves will keep weevils out of stored flour, cornmeal, and other
grains. Just place a whole bay leaf in the container and don't worry -
it will not flavor the food at all.

The fungus that infects dried beans and grains can be prevented by
placing a small, cheesecloth "sachet" filled with broken cinnamon
stick, black peppercorns, coarsely ground black mustard seed, and
green garlic into each gallon can or jar.

Essential oils can be used to create many effective non-toxic (and
wonderfully fragrant) cleansers and disinfectants.
The oils that are excellent for cleaning include:
Cinnamon, Clove, Eucalyptus, Thyme, Spruce, Lemon, Lemongrass,
Grapefruit

~Household Odors~
To freshen room air, dampen cotton balls with oil of wintergreen and
place out of sight but where air will touch them.

~Carpet Freshener~
Combine 3/4 cup baking soda, 2 tbsp. corn starch, and 1/4 cup perfumed
talcum powder. Sprinkle on dry carpet, let stand 5 to 15 minutes, then
vacuum.

~Cobwebs~
For hard to reach spots, slip a sock over the end of a yardstick and
secure with a rubber band, then sweep the area. This method works
well for cleaning under radiators and refrigerators also.

~Lavender Antibacterial Spray~
1 cup water
20 drops pure essential oil of lavender
Pour the water into a spray bottle. Add the lavender essential oil
and shake to blend. Spray on the surface and let set for at least 15
minutes. Makes: 1 cup spray
Shelf Life: Indefinite

~Basic household disinfectant~
Fill a spray bottle with water and a squirt of dishwashing soap. Add
3-5 drops each of lavender, lemon, and pine essential oils. Shake
well.

~Musty Smells~
Combine 1 tsp of tea tree oil and 1 cup of water in a spritzer
bottle. Spray the area, but don't wipe it off. In a couple of days
the smell should be gone and the tea tree oil will have dissipated.
If not . . . repeat for a couple of more days.

~Moisture Problems~
Mold and mildew thrive in moist, warm areas. To keep these areas under
control place out bowls of unscented kitty litter to absorb the
moisture. Replace these once a week.

~Mildew in books~
Place some cornstarch in a sprinkle container and sprinkle the
cornstarch onto the pages lightly. Let it sit for a few hours and
then wipe and shake clean.

~Cutting Boards~Countertops~
To get rid of strong odors on cutting boards, wipe them with vinegar
or baking soda or lemon slices or celery.
For countertops, mix a few drops of essential oil of lemon thyme to
one cup water. Spray on the surface and then wipe.

~Mold~
To kill mold use full-strength vinegar. To keep mold under control
spray with diluted vinegar on a regular basis.

~Drains~
To keep drains running clear - Once a week pour 1/2 cup of baking
soda and 1 cup of white vinegar down the drain, then follow with hot
water.

~To freshen a vacuum cleaner~
Sprinkle several drops of lemon oil onto half a tissue or cotton ball
and let the vacuum cleaner suck it up. If your vacuum cleaner has a
water reservoir, add a few drops of oil into it before cleaning.

~Fighting dust mites~
Eucalyptus oil kills dust mites. 25 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
added to each load of laundry or 1/2 ounce to a jug of laundry
detergent is all you need.

2 1/2 cups sugar
4 teaspoons lemon juice
4 tablespoons runny honey
92% of users found this article helpful.
Post a Comment View All 109 Comments Itchy, watery eyes, running nose, an aching head, and sinus congestion. Sound familiar? You may be among the 37 million people in the United States who suffer from allergic rhinitis or sinusitis. Consider combating your springtime woes naturally with these time-tested self-healing techniques.

Allergens in the Air
When your sinuses, the air-filled hollow cavities around your nose and nasal passages, become inflamed, fluid can accumulate and interfere with normal drainage of mucus in the sinuses. This condition is known as acute sinusitis. The result? You may have trouble breathing through your nose and feel your eyes and facial tissue swell up.

Your symptoms may include a headache, fever, a nagging cough, post-nasal drip, thick green or yellow discharge, and a feeling of facial "fullness" that gets worse when you lean forward; during a severe sinus infection, some people even experience a toothache.

This uncomfortable condition has many possible causes, including bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, allergies, or a deviated septum. Synonymous with spring, allergic rhinitis, commonly called hay fever, is the inflammatory result of your immune system's overreaction to allergens in the air.

Pollen is one famous offender. Other allergens include dirt, pollution, animal hair, food particles cloth fibers, and mold.

Surprising Secrets for Sinus Health
Here are some all-natural ways to gain freedom from sinus suffering.

• Clear your sinuses and your mind with a steamy stovetop spa. Add a few drops of wintergreen oil to a pot of boiling water and inhale the steam. Take care not to be burned by the vapor.

• Herbs and spices like ginger, scallion, basil, garlic, oregano, cayenne peppers, white pepper, horseradish and turmeric will have your sinus passageways unblocked in no time!

• The supplement bromelain - a papaya and pineapple-based enzyme - helps reduce histamine release, the body's natural allergic response.

• Clear your nasal passageway daily for healthy, happy sinuses. Add 1 tsp of sea salt, 1 drop of oregano oil, and 1 drop of wintergreen to a cup of warm water. Fill a small-spouted squeeze bottle with this warm solution. Squirt into one nostril at a time and blow out through the nose. Alternate nostrils.

• Press one clove of garlic, mix with 1 tsp of olive oil and soak a clean cotton ball with the oil mixture and place in nostrils after having washed the nostril with warm salt water. Leave in for 20 minutes and repeat three times a day until the symptoms clear up.

• These two simple self-massage practices that follow are incredibly effective for relieving sinus congestion. For both, sit at the tip of a sturdy chair with your back erect, spine stretched, and your head tilted slightly forward.

1. Inhale and gently press your forehead just inside the temples with your palms. Exhale and release. Repeat three times.

2. Cross your middle and index fingers by placing the tips of your middle fingers on top of the fingernails on your index fingers. Rub the sides of your nose 36 times in a circular motion, warming your fingers first if they're cold.

What you eat affects your sinus health
Avoid the foods that produce mucous and dampness: dairy products, cold and raw foods, corn (including corn syrup), and simple sugars. Choose whole grains like quinoa, amaranth and brown rice instead of wheat, rye and barley, which are typically high allergy grains. Opt for papaya, cranberries, pear, pineapple, cherries, mango, and citrus fruits. Eat more green vegetables such as artichoke, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, and spinach.

Both alcohol and smoking should be avoided during a sinus flare-up as they irritate the respiratory tract and worsen nasal inflammation. Also, sinus congestion is often worse with lack of quality rest so be sure to get plenty of sleep and keep your stress level low.

I hope that you find the ways to keep your sinuses clear and freely flowing. I invite you to visit often and share your own personal health and longevity tips with me.

May you live long, live strong, and live happy!

~ Simple Homemade Herbal Antibacterial Spray ~
New research is proving that the old folk recipes using herbs and essential oils to kill germs, such as those used by 14th century doctors during the Black Plague, were based on good science. Many essential oils, such as the oils of lavender and thyme, are more antiseptic than phenol, the industry standard. Research is also showing that antibacterial plant oils may not cause drug resistance as could be the case with common chemical disinfectants.

SIMPLE SOLUTION: The essential oil-based spray, below, leaves a lovely, clean scent. It is a good choice to use for misting your cutting board after use. Lightly Lavender Antibacterial Spray

1 cup water
20 drops pure essential oil of lavender
Pour the water into a spray bottle. Add the lavender essential oil and shake to blend. Spray on the surface and let set for at least 15 minutes, or don't rinse at all.
Makes: 1 cup spray
Shelf life: Indefinite.

HELPFUL HINTS: Look for small, colored (and recycled!) spray bottles at your local hardware store. Caution

Make sure to never get essential oils near your eyes, or to put them directly on your skin.
Make certain to use only clean spray bottles, and ones that have never contained toxic poisons.
Note that homemade herbal antibacterial sprays are not registered disinfectants.

Ginger roots creep and spread around underground, while a stalk
spikes up bearing narrow leaves and a white or yellow flower. What
color your ginger root is depends on where you obtained it, but most
store-bought ginger is called black (scalded and unpeeled) or white
(peeled). The flowers are quite fragrant, but the root is the only
part having any real medicinal use.

HEALING

Stomach: Ginger is every herbalist's favorite for calming tummy
turmoil. Stomach aches, menstrual cramps, morning sickness, and
heartburn can all be soothed with a cup of ginger. It can also be
excellent for soothing motion sickness, in fact, it may be more
powerful for this purpose than familiar medications such as
Dramamine. Use 1500-2000 mg for this purpose.

Digestion: A small amount of fresh or powdered ginger will stimulate
the digestive system. In cases of gastritis or alcoholic gastritis, a
pinch of ginger powder or a slice of the fresh root can be made into
a tea to calm this discomforting problem.

Aching Joints: Use ginger to help soothe your aching muscles and
joints. Add a couple spoonfuls to a warm bath to soothe your joints.
Or, you can brew a tea with ginger to have the same joint-relieving
effect.

Cholesterol: Recent studies have shown that ginger may help keep down
cholesterol levels. Along with exercise and a healthy diet, ginger
tea may be a pleasant way for those with high cholesterol levels to
start towards a healthier life.

Menstruation: A ginger tea can be used when the menstrual period is
late because of a cold or when cramps are especially severe.

Sore Throat: Treat a sore throat by gargling with a ginger infusion
or sucking on a ginger candy. Remember that a little goes a long way!
Try the ginger candy recipe under the culinary uses of ginger.

CULINARY USES

Ginger has a spicy-citrusy flavor and is a favorite cooking spice in
Asian, East Indian, North African, and Carribean cooking. Here is a
unique recipe you may enjoy:

Ginger and Honey Candy

1 pound honey -- the darker the better
1 pound walnuts -- shelled and chopped coarsely
½ teaspoon ginger
Simmer the honey over low heat and add the walnuts and the ginger.
Stire for forty-five minutes over very low heat.

Butter a large platter and pour the candy. Take it away from the
heat, and let it stand for a few hours. This can be cut into
different shapes with a wet knife.

(From Herbal Medicine by Dian Dincin Buchman)

FOLKLORE and HISTORY

Many centuries ago, English herbalists believed that ginger was
a "remedy" for rotting meat. It was also used for many other curious
purposes, including insomnia, cold breasts, snakebites, swooning, and
bad eyesight.

Ginger was first introduced to Europe by Alexander the Great upon
returning from Asia. It quickly became a favorite and no dinner was
complete without the herb.

At one time ginger maintained a good reputation as an aphrodisiac
(and it still does to some extent). It was believed that even the
most prudent women would be transformed into a vixen with the aid of
ginger.

Making Oils

You might be surprised by the volume of raw material it takes to make
natural oil. Remember that the essential oil is found in all parts of
the plant and are just as useful. Extracting oils yourself is a
relatively simple process. These are the recipes for those processes.

METHOD ONE

Soaking leaves and petals in oil will extract the oils in those leaves
and petals.

Rose Oil

In a clean glass crock, pour in one half cup extra extra virgin olive
oil. (this oil has little scent of its own and is natural). Add to the
oil enough freshly picked rose petals to cover the oil. Let stand 24
hours. Strain oil through cheese cloth pressing all oil from rose
petals. Discard rose pressed petals. Add fresh rose petals to this oil
and repeat. Repeat the process until desired strength of scent. (scent
varies with each type of rose used).
This method is suitable for food use only if the roses you use have
not been sprayed or chemically treated for insects or diseases.
Organically grown or naturally grown is best for food use.
METHOD TWO

In this method a consumable alcohol is used to extract the essential
oils from the plant. Leaves and petals are used for Magical purposes.
DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL!!!

In one cup of unflavored Vodka place enough petals, leaves, (& thorns)
to cover the liquid. Let stand covered tightly for two weeks. Press
the oil from the plant matter through cheesecloth. The oil and alcohol
product you have is now a natural rose perfume ready for use.

To make an essential oil follow the next steps.

Freeze the liquid you now have for 24 hours. The oil will freeze, the
alcohol will not.
Separate the frozen rose oil from the alcohol and store in tightly
sealed container. Reserve the remaining alcohol for use again.

Apple Cider Vinegar--Tried and True Home Remedies
~ Author Unknown

Many of the home remedies for common ailments listed below, call for
a tonic of apple cider vinegar (ACV) made by mixing 2 or 3 teaspoons
of ACV in an 8 ounce glass of water and drinking this before or
during each meal.

By taking this nutritious tonic you will, at the very least, be
helping to reduce the nutrient deficiencies that result from a
typical western diet containing many processed, refined foods.

Natural healing Apple cider vinegar kills germs and nourishes the
body at the same time, so have a look at some of the many different
ways people have been benefiting from the external and internal
application of this folk medicine.

ACNE BLEMISHES
Apply a solution of apple cider vinegar and water (2 tablespoons to 1
eight ounce glass of water) with a cotton ball several times a day.
This will help reduce infection and dry out inflammation.

Another natural healing home remedy calls for the daily application
of apple cider vinegar which has been infused with horseradish.
Prepare the solution by adding two cups of ACV to one pound of grated
horseradish. Let it sit for two weeks, then strain.

AGE SPOTS
Apply daily, to these darkened areas of the skin, a solution
containing 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of onion
juice. According to this home remedy, the spots should begin to fade
within 2 weeks.

ARTHRITIS HELP
Message the sore joints with a liniment made up of 2 egg whites, cup
apple cider vinegar, and cup olive oil. Also, simply taking the apple
cider vinegar tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) before
each meal has been an effective natural healing home remedy for many
people.

ASTHMA
Some people have found relief from mild asthma by taking the apple
cider vinegar tonic along with applying a vinegar-soaked compress to
the inside of the wrists.

ATHLETE'S FOOT
Athlete's foot and toenail fungus are both fungal infections, which
are quite difficult to get rid of. One of the best home remedies
involves soaking the feet twice a day in a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Or, you can apply pure apple cider vinegar
to the affected areas several times a day and before bedtime.

BLEEDING NOSE
Soak a cotton ball in pure apple cider vinegar, have the person lay
his head back and then place it in the bleeding nostril. This home
remedy will help stop the bleeding quicker.

BLOOD PRESSURE
Take 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of honey in
a glass of water twice a day to help lower blood pressure. The high
potassium values in both natural healing substances helps to balance
out sodium levels in the body, which aids in maintaining blood
pressure within healthy limits. Apple cider vinegar and honey also
contain magnesium, a mineral that works to relax blood vessel walls
and thus lower high blood pressure. To maximize the benefit of this
and other home remedies, take the holistic approach, and couple this
with dietary modifications such as a reduced fat and salt intake,
moderate coffee and alcohol, no smoking, and daily exercise.

BONE HEALTH
Due to its mineral content, Apple cider vinegar helps to sustain bone
mass and fight against osteoporosis. The important minerals involved
include manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, and silicon. Take
the general apple cider vinegar tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces
of water) to boost the body's supply of these minerals.

BRUISES
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in cup of warm apple cider vinegar and
apply it to the bruise as a compress.

BURNS
Apply pure apple cider vinegar to the burn, whether it's from the sun
or a hot surface, to reduce the pain, to disinfect, and to supply
nutrient required for healing.

CANCER PREVENTION
Apples and apple cider vinegar contain numerous substances that
protect against many types of cancer. They contain beta-carotene, a
powerful antioxidant, and phytochemicals such as flavonoids and
polyphenols that are also protective against cancer formation. Plus
they both contain pectin, a soluble fiber, which binds certain cancer
causing compounds in the colon and speeds up their elimination from
the body. So eat an apple a day and take the general apple cider
vinegar tonic home remedy (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) to
maximize these benefits.

CHOLESTEROL REDUCTION
The water soluble fiber pectin, found in apple cider vinegar, absorbs fats and cholesterol and eliminates them from the body. At the same
time, the amino acids present in apple cider vinegar neutralize some
of the harmful oxidized LDL cholesterol. Maximize this benefit by
taking the apple cider vinegar tonic home remedy (2 or 3 teaspoons to
8 ounces of water) and increasing the amount of fiber rich food in
your diet (more fruits and vegetables) while reducing the amount of
saturated and unsaturated fat.

COLDS
At the first sign of a cold, take 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
in half a cup of water several times a day. The body becomes more
alkaline during a cold and the vinegar will help to rebalance the
body's acid level. If you have a chest cold, a long-standing home
remedy calls for soaking a piece of brown paper in vinegar then
sprinkling one side of it with black pepper. Place the peppered side
of the paper on the chest, cover with a towel, and relax for 20
minutes.

CONSTIPATION
A low fiber diet and the reduction in digestive acids and enzymes as
we age, can lead to constipation. More fruits and vegetables and a
daily tonic of apple cider vinegar (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of
water) is a natural healing home remedy to combat constipation.

CORN AND CALLUS TREATMENT
Soak your feet for half an hour in a warm bath containing half a cup
of apple cider vinegar. Use a clean pumice stone to rub the affected
areas then apply pure apple cider vinegar and cover with a bandage.
Reapply vinegar and bandage the following morning.

COUGHS
A home remedy to sooth a nighttime cough is to sprinkle apple cider
vinegar on a cloth placed on a pillow.

CRAMPS
Muscle cramps can be caused by a calcium and magnesium imbalance in
the body and by a lack of vitamin E. To help prevent the recurrence
of cramps, take a regular tonic of apple cider vinegar (2 or 3
teaspoons to 8 ounces of water) along with 1 teaspoon of honey.

DANDRUFF
Apply pure apple cider vinegar to the scalp and work it into the
roots of the hair; allow the vinegar to stand for a half hour or a
full hour before washing your hair. This will help to destroy the
bacteria and fungus that cause dandruff and itchy scalp.

DIABETES
A daily tonic of apple cider vinegar (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of
water) supplies dietary fiber and other ingredients, which are beneficial in controlling blood glucose levels. As well, the acids
and enzymes promote better digestion and nutrient absorption, which
is impaired in many diabetes sufferers.

This home remedy has been the subject of new research that shows that
apple cider vinegar can help lower blood sugar levels.

DIAPER RASH
Use a 50/50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water to eliminate the
bacteria and fungus that cause diaper rash.

DIARRHEA
Pectin, the water soluble fiber in apple cider vinegar, will help to
absorb water in the intestines and provide more bulk for the stool.

Also, intestinal bacteria transforms pectin into a protective coating
which sooths the irritated lining. The well known over the counter
diarrhea preparation, Kaopectate contains pectin. So take the natural
healing apple cider vinegar tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of
water) to help eliminate diarrhea.

DIGESTION
As we age, it is common for people to produce less stomach acid
(hydrochloric acid) which can lead to digestive problems. Taking the
apple cider vinegar tonic home remedy (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces
of water) before a meal will enhance the action of your stomach's
acid and digestive enzymes.

EAR INFECTIONS
Use an ear syringe (found at drug stores) to squirt a vinegar
solution into the ear and let it sit for a minute or so, then turn
your head and let the liquid drain out.

The vinegar solution can be a 50/50 mixture of ACV and pure water, a
50/50 mixture of ACV and rubbing alcohol or a solution consisting of
one-third vinegar, one-third pure water, and one-third rubbing
alcohol.

If the ear problem persists, see a health professional.

ECZEMA
To help relieve the itching and dryness of eczema, apply a 50/50
mixture of apple cider vinegar and water to the affected areas.

FATIGUE
Fatigue can be caused by a build up lactic acid in the body during
exercise or periods of stress. The amino acids found in apple cider
vinegar can neutralize the excess lactic acid in the bloodstream and
the potassium and enzymes obtained through regular use of a vinegar tonic can help beat fatigue.

FLATULENCE
Many people avoid eating certain foods such as beans due to the gas
they produce in the body. This gas is a result of incomplete
digestion and can be minimized by soaking the beans in apple cider
vinegar prior to cooking them.

FOOT CARE
Try this home remedy for sore and tired feet which sometimes ache at
the end of a long day: Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to a basin of
warm water and allow your feet to soak for 15 minutes.

HEADACHES
Research has shown that people have slightly more alkaline urine when
they have a headache. An apple cider vinegar tonic will help restore
your body's acid/alkaline balance. According to one home remedy,
inhaling the vapors from a small bottle of apple cider
vinegar can also help or if you have a vaporizer, add some cider
vinegar to the water and inhale the vapors for five minutes.

HEMORRHOIDS
Apply the natural healing abilities of pure apple cider vinegar
directly to hemorrhoids to help reduce stinging and promote
shrinking. Use a cotton ball to apply the vinegar every few hours
until symptoms are relieved.

HICCUPS
To stop hiccups, try sipping a glass of warm water in which one
teaspoon of apple cider vinegar has been mixed in. This is a lot
simpler than many other home remedies for hiccups.

INSECT BITES AND STINGS
Bee and wasp stings, as well as itchy mosquito bites can be soothed
by applying undiluted apple cider vinegar to the affected area.

INSOMNIA
Dr Jarvis in his book "Folk Medicine" recommends the use of honey and
apple cider vinegar for those who have a hard time falling asleep at
night. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in one cup of honey
and take two teaspoons of this mixture just before going to bed.
Repeat after an hour if required. (You can sleep on that one!)

JELLYFISH STINGS (Chironex Fleckeri and Chiropsalmus Quadrigatus)
The sting of the large box jellyfish, found along the northern
tropical coastline of Australia, can be deadly. The venom injected by
these animals is capable of killing humans within minutes. When a
sting occurs, pieces of tentacle may be left in the victims skin
which can continue to release venom. However, by dousing the sting area with regular vinegar (5% acetic acid content), the further
release of poison will be rapidly and completely stopped. That's why
Australian lifeguards always keep vinegar on hand and it's their
initial first aid treatment of choice.

LEG CRAMPS
Take the apple cider vinegar tonic regularly (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8
ounces of water) to help the body's absorption of calcium and
magnesium and thus protect against painful leg cramps.

MENSTRUAL PROBLEMS
A glass of apple cider tonic (2 or 3 teaspoons to 8 ounces of water)
in the morning has been reported to help reduce the flow of a heavy
period.

NIGHT SWEATS & HOT FLASHES
Apple cider vinegar has helped reduce hot flashes and night sweats
for some menopausal women who for various reasons can't take
hormones. Use the apple cider vinegar tonic regularly. (2 or 3
teaspoons to 8 ounces of water)

POISON IVY & POISON OAK
The health and fitness expert Patricia Bragg recommends spraying a
solution of equal parts apple cider vinegar and distilled water on to
the affected areas to stop the pain, itching and ease the swelling.
Cooling the spray in the refrigerator will provide even more relief.

SINUSITIS
To help relieve the pain of sinusitis, both Patrick Quillin PhD ( in
his book Amazing Honey Garlic and Vinegar) and Cynthia Holzapfel ( in
her book Apple Cider Vinegar for Weight Loss and Good Health) suggest
drinking a glass of water with 1 or 2 teaspoons of ACV added, every
hour for 6 to 8 hours.

For sinus headache, Marie Nadine Antol, in her book The Incredible
Secrets of Vinegar, recommends adding an eight of a cup of ACV to a
cool-air vaporizer and inhaling the infused-air directly for 5
minutes. After that lie down for 20 minutes and wait for your
respiratory passages to clear.

SORE THROAT
One of many natural healing home remedies for a sore throat involves
gargling with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to half
a cup of water, using 3 mouthfuls of mixture each hour. As P. Bragg
warns in her book "Apple Cider Vinegar-Miracle Health System", don't
swallow the gargled mixture, because ACV acts like a sponge drawing
out throat and mouth germs and toxins.

SUN BURNS If the sunburn is localized, apply full strength apple cider vinegar
on the affected skin to obtain relief. Do this by soaking a thin
towel in apple cider vinegar and placing it over the burn. Leave it
on to help prevent peeling and itching. If the sunburn covers a large
part of the body then try this home remedy recommended by Patricia
Bragg in her book called Apple Cider Vinegar-Miracle Health System:
Take a cool bath in which one cup of ACV has been added. After
soaking in the bath, gently dry the body and pat ACV directly onto
the needed areas. Wait 5 minutes, and then pat on aloe vera gel.

ULCERS
A preliminary study in Japan showed that taking a weak vinegar
solution can give over 95% protection from alcohol-induced ulcers.

URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS
Drink a daily tonic of apple cider vinegar to help you keep the right
pH balance in the urinary tract since the proper acidity creates an
inhospitable environment for bacteria and yeasts that cause these
infections.

Cranberry juice is also a well known home remedy for urinary tract
infections. It prevents bacteria from attaching to the walls of the
urinary tract.

For a tasty drink, try adding 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to
an eight ounce glass of cranberry juice and benefit from both home
remedies at the same time.

VARICOSE VEINS
Dr Jarvis notes that the following folk remedy is used not only in
Vermont but also in Scotland, England and Germany. Apply undiluted
apple cider vinegar to the varicose veins at night and in the
morning, and take two teaspoons of ACV in a glass of water twice a
day. Shrinking of the veins will be noticed after one month.

WARTS
Patricia
