4/10 Part II

In the book The Long Tail, Chris Anderson makes the case that there is an explosion of both media content and of ways to distribute that content. This has provided us with a media culture of "abundance." Problem is, both attention and reputation continue to be scarce.

When there were 3 national networks and up to 3 local stations per market, this was all we could watch. Now that we have 200 or more channels, we haven't upped the range of what we watch that much. Maybe we've doubled or tripled the channels we are comfortable turning to, we haven't increased it by 50.

On the web the issue is even more pronounced. "surfing" the web was fun in the 90s, when you could still feel that getting to 1% of the content was a reasonable goal. According to domaintools.com, the web is now at just over 100 million active websites.

With increased production and distribution and finite time and trust, we need FILTERS that can direct surfers to the coolest waves. In order to get your audience's attention, you need a reputation for having a good head for linkage.

Today you need to find the top THREE websites of the day related to your tribe and your topic. Post the URL of the home page (or, if you want to feature one section of a web page, like a columnist or blogger in a newspaper or netzine, be sure to get the exact URL. Write a brief description underneath the URL, about 50 words or so, letting your reader know what they're going to be seeing when they click.

As usual, if you can't finish by 3:30, do what you can and come back to it before the weekend. best, JLT
