The entire situation is pretty maddening. We stashed our hoops with some other psihoops behind the sound board and went to go get a drink, when we got back our hoops were missing. After searching for 2 hours (during Shpongle nonetheless) we were able to recover my hoop, but not Christina's. If you hear of someone accidently ending up with a neato LED hoop after that event, please let us know as it was a very special hoop.

What is the HoopGirl Workout?
The HoopGirl Workout is feel-good fitness! Learn to hoop on your torso, arms, legs and off body in elaborate arcs, spins and jumps. Hoopdance can help you feel "sexy", that is, full of confidence, inner radiance, power and poise. Explore pleasure as your primary motivation for movement. You learn how to navigate using feeling instead of sight or thought -- becoming responsive, breathing deeply and creating fluid transitions. Special attention given to micromovements of the body, working with the downbeat, freeing the head, unleashing your own style. Guidance for performance given throughout class. Free yourself in ecstatic undulation, experiment with vocal release and express attitude and spunk! Teambuilding activities build a sense of community and create laughter. Performance opportunities allow us to each shine and feel appreciation and joy. A variety of music -- from electronic house music, R&B to classical and world music will provide a rich tapestry of sound for your dance.

What is covered in the HoopGirl Workout for Beginners?
No experience neccessary! The extended class time in this series allows for lots of one-on-one attention and detailed instruction. You will explore dancing while hooping, with ample time to master moves. Each day is devoted to increasing awareness in a different part of the body while working with a specific principle of hoopdance. MOVES COVERED: Pump, float, wild west, slinky, snake, booty bump, limbo, barrell roll, booty blitz, spunk, swish, warrior, ring, leap, whisper, toss, revolving door, electric slide, pin-up, scissor kick.

This Sunday is the very first Sunset Party of the season and Bay Area Hoopers are heading North to Marin and it'd be great to see you all there too. Now technically the location is still to be announced, but the word is that it's all happening where the first Sunset Party of the season seems to be every year: Stafford Lake in Novato. Here's the url for more info:

http://www.pacificsound.net/events.html

Here's the info, directions, etc on Stafford Lake:

http://www.co.marin.ca.us/depts/PK/Main/pos/pdstaffordlke.cfm

The season opener runs from 11am - 7pm, everybody is welcome, and artists include Solar, Galen, J-Bird, and special guest TONY (the gathering, Basics - Tango, Nightshift Recordings) and others. How much does it cost? It's free! But you have to pay for parking at Stafford Lake which should only be $5 for the day. So figure out a carpool and save on gas and parking and feel the love.

Blessings to you, Hoop Community!

I wanted to let everyone that the Second leg of the Hoop Path Tour is set for San Francisco and L.A. I am very excited about the opportunity to teach a second Workshop in SF, called, "The Warrior Path." This space for this workshop has been donated to us, and I will extend that generosity by lowering the tuition to 50 dollars. The space is limited in size, however, so I must limit this opportunity to attend to those who have recently taken a workshop from me (SF, Portland, Eugene, or Seattle.) There is only room for ten of us, so pre-registration is required. "The Warrior Path" is a continuation of the ideas laid out in the "The Hoop Path: First Steps" workshop.

[Note: We are quickly approaching capacity for these SF workshops. Please rsvp to make sure we have a spot for you. thehooppath@gmail.com]

"The Hoop Path: First Steps" Workshop

This 3-hour intensive will introduce you to the inspiring myths and powerful metaphors of The Hoop Path, a spiritual approach to hoopdance that has slowly built itself out of Jonathan Baxter's years of daily Hoop Practice. Bax's teaching incorporates prayerful guidance and unique storytelling as well as the straightforward breaking down of moves and practice of new techniques. This workshop is for those of us who already feel a connection with Hooping that goes far deeper than pure fitness, or for those hoopers who yearn to deepen and expand their Practice into subtler levels of awareness and grace. Together we will define and explore Hoop Path terms such as: pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree; as well as established techniques such as Reversing, Breaking, Paddling and Angle Hooping.

Thoughts based on the recent PacNW shops:

I have learned many lessons already in this tour. Some of you may notice that I have omitted some terms from the curriculum for the "First Steps" workshop. As the workshop took shape we realized that we had been a little too optimistic with regards to how much info we could pack in. We have shortened our list and we believe the workshop is better for it.

Here are some other things we have learned:

1. Students are encouraged to bring pads and pens with which to take notes. We do not provide a printed text, so if you are the sort that likes to have things written down, then by all means, we encourage you. If you should forget, we will have pads available.

2. This workshop is rigorous. We hoop a lot. Though there is a long opening talk, we will easily hoop for two solid hours. Please come prepared with water, snacks, redbull (hooper crack), or whatever else. (I don't endorse redbull, I'm only trying to be funny here.)

3. My workshops are not "move swaps." Atleast, not by design. We work on developing a Hoop Practice and opening oneself up to winds of undiscovered expression. I expected to feel friction with this, but I think not having a list of moves to work through actually relaxed the students who came.

4. We don't actually hoop naked. Sorry. That was just a joke.

5. This didn't come up in PacNW, but we do not allow video taping.

6. The "First Steps" workshop emphasizes the Core and the Current. We will not get into Samurai Hooping.

7. You do not need to have a super small hoop for the "First Steps" workshop.

PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:

Many have asked about what level of hooping skill is required to attend the workshop. This has proved to be a tough question to answer. I would suggest that those interested in coming should have some flight time with hooping in their Second Current, at least, at the waist level. For those of you who are unfamiliar, this means that you should be able to hoop both directions. You do not need to be fluent in both, but some experience in both will make for a much better workshop for you. Know also that we may go over things which are beyond what you can currently do. There is no way of getting around this. If you can afford yourself some patience, this doesn't have to be frustrating. Honestly, I think is the "newbie" hooper who may have the most to gain from the approach we take to Hoop Practice.

Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_P8__DRq0

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekDuhjQQEE

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7fVdbGQVU

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlfQeLDsYw

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPPYrAy4gS0

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90mutX0tUg
Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScregYQ55to
The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

But-- I will be returning to the Bay Area, (Napa) for my 10 year high school reunion this SATURDAY. I'll also be hooping at it! I was hoping to find a couple hoopers that wanted to perform with me to add to the excitement of the party.

It's Saturday from about 5-10 p.m., we're expecting anywhere from 150-300 people. We've got 2 bands and a popular SF DJ. Interested? Could be a great experience! You can wear whatever you want, the more animated, the better. I have plenty of hoops for the audience, too. Should be pretty fun. Email me, Cassie, at cjeremias@gmail.com if you're interested. We'll pay gas money to get there, you'll get free food AND I'm told we can afford to pay a bit, too! Thanks!
