Guerilla PURE performance in Salem!

Hi all!
Next Sunday (October 12th) is going to be our Salem PURE guerilla bellydance event. A couple summers ago we danced through Salem and got a hugely welcoming response. Let's try it again!! There will be all sorts of Halloween fun going on so it's a great time to be out there!

I need to know who is coming so that I can plan our numbers. So far, for sure I know that it'll be at least me, Rachel, Diana, and hopefully Beth - possibly Caitlin. I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to have more of you!

So let's meet at the Salem Visitor Center at 1:00PM (on the corner of Essex St - across from the garage and Mall).

After PURE, we're going to troll around Salem, get all dressed up, and head to Strega for a birthday dinner celebrating Rachel and my birthday (on the 7th and 12th respectively). If you'd like to come to Strega (www.stregasalem.com) I need to know by Monday (10/6/08) as I'll be making a reservation asap.

Maine PURE chapter

SE MA/RI PURE rehearsal and gathering

Hey gals! It's time to start thinking about getting together again after our long winter break. Hope everyone is in good health and ready to dance away!

I'll be having a PURE rehearsal Sat 3/29. 2-4pm at Alicia's Dance Studio 224 Winthrop (hwy 44) in Rehoboth. email: neylan@worldofneylan.com for directions if you need to.

This will be the last time we can use this studio as in April I'll be moving my classes to Perishable Theater in Providence!! Just think of the guerilla belly dance opportunities there!

What we'll cover:
review of PURE choreo, so bring a newbie
upcoming events: where? when? what we'd like to do....bring your date books
new directions: what we'd like to add to the performances, our OWN choreo to share with the chapter
and last but not least: dvd production, yep I would like us on film.

NH PURE facilitator needed!

Hello Puristas!

I will be leaving New Hampshire in the Fall and moving to New York
City! I'm very excited about the upcoming move although I will miss
friends and the dance community we have all built here in the area
including PURE. So the reins for NH PURE will have to be picked up by
another. Any takers out there in the NH community to be the new NH
PURE facilitator? It's not that hard, you simply need to schedule
practices, work with the group to organize performance opportunities
and stay in contact with the other regional New England facilitators
for bigger regional events. There is potential studio space for
practices available although you will need to coordinate/negotiate
with the new studio owners. I have all the material you need to be
the facilitator and can pass this along to you.

Please let me know if anyone would be interested in facilitating NH
PURE and I'll get with you to transfer all info (email contact below).

Thanks to all the NH dancers for helping to build NH PURE and I hope
you all carry it forward in a spirit of community and joy! It has
been a pleasure dancing with you all!

Vermont PURE worshop coming up in November

Saturday November 10th there will be a PURE workshop in Montpelier, VT at the Grange hall from 2-5 PM. It will be followed by Shimmy Shindig, a high energy and guaranteed to be fun hafla. Come and learn the choreography, dance at the hafla or take in the show, and buy all sorts of lovely dance pretties from the vendors. (I know I'll be there vending Eye Kandy, Sleevie Wonders and other delicious goodies)

The workshop is only $20 and the show $5, with proceeds going towards the VT PURE Chapter startup and paying our fantastic instructor to come all the way up to Vermont to share PURE with us.

Hope Out Loud, Hartford Sept 9th

Just to let you know we have been asked again to do something for the Hope Out Loud festival in Hartford on Sept 9th.

Last year we had a really successful march there; I think this year a lot of people have other commitments but it would be nice to have a bit of a showing. It's been kind of a slow summer here in CT, so we will be meeting at 2pm at Charter Oak Cultural Center for a bit of planning and practicing before heading over to the festival for 3:15 dancing. What we end up doing will largely depend on who is there, I am thinking we may do some more Audience Participation rather than foundation choreography. All NE.PURE dancers and drummers welcome, please let me know if you think you will come.

I'm starting a Worcester PURE practice on the 9th (Sunday) of September!!! It will be held at the Zen Training Center at 65 Water St (3rd floor) in Worcester and most likely be from 11AM-1PM.
A donation of $15/hour will be given to the dojo for use of the space, so please bring between $5 and $10 with you and will split up the cost among all of us who will attend.

Next Boston PURE practice

I know many of you are going to Northern Migration :-p (I'll be with you in spirit...though I'll be here in body :~(...) but the next Boston practice is going to be on Sunday, July 15th from 12:15-2:15. Drummers and dancers who have attended before and who are new...PLEASE COME DANCE AND DRUM WITH US! Well...at the moment we don't have drummers...but it would be nice to have some come!!!!

What do you feel when the moon is full? Extra hairy? A desire to swell with the rising tide? Illuminated with the urge to dance and make music and dance some more? Let the lunar rhythms guide the music and the motion making you move on this magnificent night.

The Tribe follows no specific dogma, we are coming together in what was once the oldest synagogue in Connecticut. It is an evening of merrymaking, pure and simple, dress outrageously, have a little wine, drum and dance and laugh and sing, my friends.

Drummers, Dancers, Musicians and Others will gather every full moon to participate in a truly tribal experience. We will start with basic Middle-Eastern rhythms to get the dancers moving and see where we go from there. Please bring instruments, the desire to dance or the enthusiasm to share in a tribal experience. Extra drums and other percussion will be available as well.

Next Boston PURE practice

Hi all...
I've reserved Third Life Studio for every third Sunday of the month...though what stinks about that is that it makes our next practice on Father's Day. Nonetheless...there is still practice (as I have to pay for the space either way :-)...).
Time: 12:15-2:15PM
Location: Third Life Studio - Union Square, Somerville
Date: June 17th (Father's Day)
Cost: We split the cost of the studio...the more people who show up, the cheaper it is. Right now we are paying $15/hour total...so $30.

Please come and join in with us!!! And bring your dancing friends along!

Also...July's practice will probably be held on a different date than the third Sunday (if at all) as I will most likely be away from the 13th-22nd.

NH PURE practice (June 9) and Portsmouth Walk (June 24)!

The next NH PURE practice will be held on June 9 from 11:15am - 12:30pm at Lotus Rising World Dance Studio (right before the Phaedra workshop)!!! This practice will focus on working through the complete choreography in preparation for the PURE procession and performance in Portsmouth, NH on Sunday June 24. We will also be having a rehearsal that morning (June 24) before the Portsmouth walk from 11am-12:20pm.

If you only know the first half of the choreo and want to join the walk on June 24 you can still do so but you'll need to attend at least the June 24 11am rehearsal to see where you'll need to "step out". It's not complicated, really, so don't let that put you off at all ;-)!

Sorry if there's a conflict with the budding Salem PURE thing but the June 24 date has been in the works for a while now. Besides, the more PURE the better!! Any dancers who may be up in the NH area please feel free to join us! And we REALLY, REALLY need drummers!!

CT practice (May 24th?)

Hi Everybody!

This is your friendly new coordinator of Connecticut sub-chapter of PURE looking to get some practices going again so we can learn part 2 of the foundation choreography.
Talking with Chris, apparently the nearest date when I am here and we can get at Charter Oak is maybe Thursday May 24th. How do you all feel about doing it on a weeknight? I am generally not here most weekends for much of the summer and I suspect the same is true of a lot of people. is 7pm a good time for folks?

I would like to keep using Charter Oak, but if other folks in central connecticut know of other studios or practice spaces we could use when Charter Oak is not available but we have time, let me know! we could also maybe do practices outside if the weather is nice.

I would love if PURE could dance together at the Sharon Moore Hafla at Dragon's Egg on June 2, since I know we will have some NH, CT and RI people there and maybe new VT coordinator person as well.

Also, on June 23, Charter Oak is having Nomadic Summer Spirit with Carmine and Co. this year, and Chris would love to have CT chapter maybe do a march or host a gathering, and it's a good chance for the drummers to learn part 2 also. So head's up that something will occur on that date in Hartford...

BellyDance for a Cure- Thanks everyone!

Big Thank You to everyone who came out for BellyDance for a Cure on May
5th!

We had 7 super uber cool PURE dancers and one super uber cool PURE
drummer who did a great job! And- Logan who was very good, especially
with Bob who "baby-sat" during the performance.

We got alot of very good feed back from members of the audience, the
coordinators and other performers. They did ask if we would consider
performing again next year- of course I said!

I haven't heard yet how much was raised for the Avon Breast Cancer walk
from the coordinators yet, but will let you know as soon

We had our first Boston PURE practice today and I'm sad to say that only 2 dancers besides me showed up. C'mon ladies!!! There are TONS of dancers in the Boston area :-) !!!! Come on out and join us in PURE!!! The more the merrier!!! A BIG thank you to the ladies that did turn out for the practice!

We will be holding a second May practice on Sunday, May 20th from 12:15-2:15. Just as a note...DON'T mapquest the directions. They won't get you to the right place! Goto the Third Life Studio website (http://www.thirdlifestudio.com/) and get the directions from there. Parking is a little difficult but there are free lots around Union Square on Sundays.

The Tribe follows no specific dogma, we are coming together in what was once the oldest synagogue in Connecticut. It is an evening of merrymaking, pure and simple, dress outrageously, have a little wine, drum and dance and laugh and sing, my friends.

Drummers, Dancers, Musicians and Others will gather every full moon to participate in a truly tribal experience. We will start with basic Middle-Eastern rhythms to get the dancers moving and see where we go from there. MA/RI reherasal and MARCH! 4/22 Sunday

YES the Sun has finally come out and wants us to celebrate Earth Day in PURE Fashion!!

Plan on meeting for rehearsal at 26 Summer ST Attleboro MA at 2pm 4/22
directions: from interstate 95- take MA exit 3 123 East. (if coming from North you'll go over the bridge before taking the exit)
Follow 123 east to where it turns Left at Mobil Station
Continue to follow past Capron Park (where we will be doing the March later)
Summer St is the first RIGHT TURN after Capron Park
Go past Stop sign
26 Summer St is on the left- there is a fire hydrant in front yard. Plenty of on street parking

Don't forget to bring your PURE costumes and flowers for your hair- and Shoes! You'll need them.
We'll go over the choreography til about 3:30 then do the March. Afterwards, anyone is welcome to say and chip in for pizza.

Thanks to everyone who came on Saturday making it a wonderful day. We
had a nice turn out and lots of fun with Sarah.
And WE NOW KNOW THE ENTIRE CHOREOGRAPHY WOOT WOOT!

So what's next for NE PURE?
If you weren't able to attend this past Saturday, try to make it to a
sub-chapter rehearsal asap as we will be performing the entire
choreography at upcoming events.

Earth Day- I'm hoping to find an event to guerilla bellydance into- if
not, we will be parading through Attleboro after the rehearsal stopping
to perform in a couple of locations. Afterward- plan on a belly dancer
movie/pizza night at my house.

May 5th: We have a possible performance op at Belly Dance for a Cure
in Middleboro MA. Show time is 8pm, I'm still waiting on final
details.

For those going to Spring Caravan in Somerset NJ: Kaeshi will be
teaching there, and PURE NYC has invited PURE dancers to join in with
them. If you're interested in being involved, let me know I'll get more

The Eastern/Central Mass subchapter of PURE will have its first meeting back on April 15th from 12:15-2:15 at the Third Life Studio in Union Square, Somerville. From there, we will tentatively have the space for every third Sunday of the month for our practices. I hope many of you will be able to attend. PURE is collective of dancers and drummers who take music and dance out into the streets for the purposes of healing and peace.

This workshop will build on the material we learned in the first PURE New England workshop. We'll learn the second half of the foundation choreography and run the whole piece to answer any questions about the first half as well. We'll also do some movement meditation and body awareness exercises to tap into how we balance choreography and presence, so that the PURE experience can be uplifting, creative, and healing for ourselves and our audiences.

You may arrive up to 30 minutes before the workshop to sign in and warm up. There will be a class in session until 12:15, please do not interrupt.

Naam Rakisha at Seven Arrows

Na'am Rakisha Workshare at Seven Arrows
What is it? You've got a dance you want to show? Need an idea for a move that just needs tweaked a bit? Stuck on a choreograghy? Na'am Rakisha is a new way to exchange dance ideas, choreography, costumes and just to mix and mingle with other dancers and musicians.
What's happening? We have Katie B of Azar Maya fame presenting the Faust Project: a dance based on Zar and African rhythms. This is a workshare experience where interested dancers and drummers can learn combinations for an upcoming performance.
After, there will be a Works in Progress performance offered for public viewing
When is it? March 10th 2-3:30 pm for the workshare, 4-5pm for the performance

The Tribe follows no specific dogma, we are coming together in what was once the oldest synagogue in Connecticut. It is an evening of merrymaking, pure and simple, dress outrageously, have a little wine, drum and dance and laugh and sing, my friends.

Drummers, Dancers, Musicians and Others will gather every full moon to participate in a truly tribal experience. We will start with basic Middle-Eastern rhythms to get the dancers moving and see where we go from there. Please bring instruments, the desire to dance or the enthusiasm to share in a tribal experience. Extra drums and other percussion will be available as well.

What: Are you a belly dancer with at least one year of
classes under your hip scarf? Then we would love to
dance with you! PURE is collective of dancers and
drummers who take music and dance out into the streets
for the purposes of healing and peace.

Dance and ritual create community, drawing people
together both emotionally and physically into a shared
sense of the divine. As the community participates, no
one is a stranger any longer.

Dancers and musicians will be traveling down the
sidewalks and into subways and public spaces to share
their love of dance and music with the public and to
pay homage to specific sites.

Come join us and learn this simple and beautiful

The Gathering is a very special place, giving Middle Eastern tribal dancers the opportunity to move with live music and players of all kinds of instruments are welcome to play. I ask that as drummers, we respect the dancers and quieter musicians by playing with them, not against them. For example, djembes, when played full-on African-style can be so overwhelming, players of quieter instruments are drowned out and dancers who frequent the Gathering lose inspiration. So, if we watch our volume and choose appropriate instruments to play, we should be able to hear everyone while keeping the tribal vibe alive... thank you, Chris

NH subchap PURE practice Jan 21!!!

The next NH subchapter PURE practice and get together will be held on Sunday, January 21 from 11:30am-1pm! The dancers who attended the Dec 17 practice did an AWESOME job of learning the choreography basics in a short period of time!!! Kudos to you!! We will be reviewing the choreography again during this next session for any new dancers and will also work on sharpening up the formations and getting really tight as a group! Please bring your ideas for PURE performances and appearances in the local area!

Also, the studio will be hosting a veil workshop with Sabrina Tarulli following the PURE practice from 2-4pm if you are inclined to make it a day of dance at the studio. RI/CT PURE at Egg drum circle, Jan 7th?

Hey, theres going to be a bunch of PURE people at the Dragon's Egg on Jan 7th (well, RI ones anyway) so we were talking about maybe doing a little practice either during a break (so as not to take too much general circle time), or maybe as a demonstration to people who don't know what it is ? unfortunately i can't set the time earlier, but maybe we can make it work out somehow.

classes and free-for-all dance, tuesdays, mystic CT

I'll be doing ATS/fusion improv tribal classes at Dragon's Egg Mystic Ct. on Tuesdays at 6:30pm starting on January 16th. cost is $60 for 6 classes or $12 to drop in. We will particularly be covering timing for clear cuing this time around.

And as an experiment, after class, say 7:45ish I could stay later for anybody who wants to stay or come by for free-for-all dance swap. Everybody bring a movement or step or warmup skill and share it with us; it can be really simple or sort of complicated, but hopefully
teachable in about 10 minutes so everyone can have a go. This would also be for folks who live somewhat farther away, and what I would hope is for other people to hold free-for-all dance space time in other places so we can have the roaming non-troupe tribal dance practice like various people talked about with me in the fall. Cost for this is free, but donations welcome to cover the space. drummers welcome! Since i am sure the distant people may only come occasionally, the schedule for this will probably be refined.

(I have to check to make sure I actually can have the studio for this so if you are interested please let me know. If I can't have the space, it could move to the Old Mystic Mill building.)

I am also super impressed you were able to learn the full choreography in the two hour session :-O!!! Kudos to you!! I promise not every practice will be that, err, breakneck...

Just wanted to let you all know that the next PURE rehearsal for drummers and dancers is December 17th!
We are still ironing out the time for it, but it looks like it'll be 2pm-5pm or so.

Open to all drummers and dancers with at least one year of experience! While this is the subchapter rehearsal for Western MA/CT, all are welcome from anywhere to come dance with us!!

Next PURE rehearsal -THIS SUNDAY!

Thank you SO much to all the dancers and drummers who came out yesterday to learn the PURE choreography and drumming! A big thank you to Chris for teaching the drumming and to Katie for leading the dancers!! We got through the entire routine with a lot of brand new dancers! Fantastic!!

Because of the holiday and the plethora of workshops in November next Sunday seemed to be the best date for our next monthly rehearsal session. Sorry for the late notice! Again any one is welcome to come who has been dancing or drumming for at least a year! After the rehearsal is the monthly Full Moon Gathering at Charter Oak. This is a free drum and dance event open to any and all. We are planning to rehearse for an hour and then have a short break before we start the celebrations! Please join us if you're free!!!
