Steampunks are invading the "Antique Autos in History Park" event!

Antique Autos in History Park
Sunday Sept 13, 2009
Noon till 5:00pm
1600 Senter Rd San Jose, CA 95112
Cost: FREE!

We're using this event to get our Steampunk gear on, gather together and enjoy a day in the park. We'll be taking a break to enjoy a potluck picnic lunch at around 2:00ish. Bring your picnic gear, something to share and a beverage (alcohol is not allowed in the park) and we'll gather on the lawn of the Hill House (the Hill House is located directly across from the Fire House). There MAY be picnic tables available, but plan to either bring your own chair, or sit upon the grass... we're steamPUNKS so grass won't hurt us ey?

History park is a fabulous place for photos, so bring your cameras.

There's a fantastic Trolly barn chock full of steam powered cars & engines, O'Brien's Sweet shop, and plenty of house museums to browse... oh, and the park will be full of antique cars!

Hope to see everyone there!

In steam we Trust,

Shannon has been speaking to the Exploratorium in SF, It looks like we will be doing something there in April, a few weeks before we head to Makers fair. I picked up some really incredible books of 1890's era technology in Munich when I was there over Christmas. Many people would be suprised to know that a form of "fax" machine existed then.
One Book has 100's of incredible etchings of everything from "modern" street lamps to the laying of the transatlantic telegraph cable.
After Shannon and I looked at it we came of with a story that will use some of the etchings.
"The Iron Leviathan" the hunting and use of clockwork Whales.
"these creatures are incredibly valuable, as they provide a source of quality gears and other mechanical parts, along with a source of high quality lubricant." (excerpt).
A must see in Munich is the Deutsches Museum a unbelieveable collection of vintage steam engines among other things.

If you live in "hotspot" areas that are the site of live/work reuse of old warehouses, etc.---this is of special interest to you--and really ANYONE in Oakland should know about and understand our zoning issues as they are in the process of changing the zoning in many areas of the city. This will have direct impact on the lives of many of us. Think about attending--take your roomies--learn what is in the works and how you can have input. Don't just sit there while they change the laws that effect where you live--and where you CAN live.

This effects anyone who makes/builds art in these areas in large spaces as well as anyone who wants to see this sort of thing continue--even if you DON'T live in these areas.
> Citywide Zoning Workshops
>
>
> The City of Oakland needs your help! The City is updating its
> zoning regulations, which govern the physical development of land.
> Zoning regulations affect many people living and working in
> Oakland. We urge you to become familiar with the zoning update
> process and get involved
>
> Please join us at one of our two community workshops to discuss
> zoning issues in the City's commercial corridors and residential
> areas. Workshop participants will engage in small group exercises
> that illustrate issues associated with the City's residential and
> commercial zoning. The purpose of the exercise is to familiarize
> you with the way zoning regulations affect the development pattern
> of our city. Issues and different tools that can help address the
> issues will be presented and your input will be requested.
>
> The same meeting is being held at two different locations and
> times; we hope you can attend one of the meeting dates below:
>
> FEBRUARY 26, 2009, Thursday 5:45 to 7:45 pm
> Transit Line)
>
> Help Us Get the Word Out!
> We would like your help in distributing the attached flyer in your
> neighborhood. You could ask your local coffee shop, grocery store,
> church, dry cleaner, community center, or anywhere where the public
> may see it to post the flyer. You could distribute the flyer to
> your neighbors as well. We want to get the word out to as many
> people as possible.
>

In the past, we have relied on using Brass Goggles and Spare Goggles
problems at the Brass Goggles site, and not wishing to use up too much
bandwidth at the Spare Goggles site, we decided to create this group.

This is the place to post notices about upcoming events, meetups, and
to have general chat of interest to Portland area steampunks. Please
come in, take a look around, post your photo, add a link, put your

Mom, Dad,
I'm Into Steampunk.
BY Marco Kaye

- - - -

Remember when I was crawling around the attic, looking for my old Planters-peanut-man Halloween costume? I didn't donate it to the children's theater, like I told you. I salvaged the monocle, top hat, and cane, combined them with a swallowtail tuxedo, and stole away to a midnight screening of the underrated masterpiece The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Don't get me wrong; I still live in your world. In this very house even. But now I exist between two eras: an Edwardian past and a quixotic future where dirigibles can travel through space and time.

No, I won't take off my topcoat. And that's exactly my point. I understand your confusion. The nascent trend I have latched onto is difficult to define. Maybe I can explain it to you with the new mods I've been working on. No, Mom. Not like in Quadrophenia, although I appreciate those mods' fondness for tailor-made clothing. These mods.

This looks like a late-18th-century organette, correct? Look again. It hides the Dell laptop you got me when I went to college. This bronze hand crank turns it on, and I've hidden a miniature photo printer where the tune sheet is supposed to go. I even installed Linux. I've put a lot of time into this since I quit my job at Anthropologie, which is something else I wanted to tell you about. Don't get up and go to Lowe's yet. But when you're there can you get me a two-speed fan capacitor?

You'll appreciate this, Dad. Would I ever lose this cell phone? It's got a back plate of soldered brass. I created the aged patina with simple ammonia and salt. I'll replenish that soon, if you'll quit bugging me about it. Check this out. These interlocking gears are what I use to dial. They also explain why I haven't been replying to your texts recently.

Of course, I didn't need to mod Grandpa's railroad watch, but I did want to tell you that I'm borrowing it indefinitely.

If you want to label me retrofuturistic so I can fit into your compartmentalized worldview, that's fine. But look past my airplane goggles. This is my lifestyle. While many of my kind doubt there'll be a complete societal collapse in the future, a near-cataclysm is likely. In this scenario, I will be able to repair a generator, suture the wounded, and even train carrier pigeons. I'm learning valuable skills.

Don't be silly. I am not affiliated with the goths who hang out at the end of the boardwalk. Yes, rivetheads have made attempts to horn in on my culture. It's attractive to them. Since Evanescence went mainstream, they've been able to buy their clothes at Spencer's Gifts. But just because they read about our ways on Boing Boing doesn't mean they can rock a true neo-Victorian lifestyle. It takes a lot of time and a lot of welding.

How long? Why are you so locked down to the months and weeks of today? Anyway, I've known for a while that I belong to a hypertechnologized gaslight era. I've loved trains since I was 2. Remember my obsession with Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? And although I don't remember getting a good grade on that Nikola Tesla essay, I was really enthusiastic about the subject.

Don't shackle me to your outmoded ways of work. Trade and barter are more valuable to me than any coin. Besides, I'm plenty busy guest-hosting a blog called The Neon Corset. My band, Shades of Crimson, has taken off. We just booked a gig at the Rusty Rudder.

Is it too soon to invite you to a night of experimental performance and magic? My friends and I are hosting a postvaudevillian event at the VFW Hall. If you attend, I would appreciate if you called me by my new name, Alchemancer.

Don't look so crestfallen, Mom and Dad. At least I'm not into cyberpunk.

Fourth of July weekend!

A DRESS-UP-&-TIME-TRIP OPPORTUNITY

If you haven't decided what to do during the day this Fourth of
July, you might want to look in on the Pardee Patriotic Picnic and
Stereopticon Ice Cream Social at the beautiful Pardee Home Museum at
11th and Castro on the edge of Downtown Oakland. That's right,
downtown Oakland! This Victorian island was home to the Pardee family
from its completion in 1869 until the death of the last Pardee
daughter in 1981, and still has its front and rear gardens, with
carriage house and water tower.

The event is a sort of combination holiday garden party and
charity bazaar set in 1908, with recent governor George Pardee
(portrayed as usual by museum director David Nicolai) and his wife
Helen (me, Annie Lore) as genial hosts. There will be wonderful food,
ice cream made on the spot, entertainment (with piano pyrotechnics by
the justly-lauded Frederick Hodges) with activities, games and
competitions for young and old, from sedate croquet and lawn tennis
to the little-known eggball and the thrilling Pardee Tabletop Regatta
on "Lake Roosevelt".

In the Benevolent Bazaar one can purchase toys, books,
knickknacks and who-knows-what. There are awards and prizes to be
won, the most lavish of which (to date) is the Grand Prize of an
antique stereopticon and stereoview cards for the winner of the Paper
Poppy Pageant, a costume competition. All entrants receive a stereo
picture of themselves, with folding viewer (these viewers also
available for sale to anyone).

The Picnic is held from noon till 5:00. It's four blocks from
12th St. BART, with free street parking. If it were left up to me,
I'd comp everyone in, because we belong there-- but since this is a
fundraiser for the museum, I don't think the Board of Trustees would
go for that and it is after all a worthy cause, so there's an
admission charge, which ranges from $12-$18 for adults, depending
upon whether you come in period dress and/or buy your invitation in
advance, and $4-$8 for children. This includes food, cold drinks and
ice cream, with beer, wine and bottled sodas extra.

There are also a number of ways to get in free as a participant;
even if you just help with setup on one of the days before, you can
come to the Picnic and do nothing but play-- in period dress, of
course. So it has a specific period, with games, vendors, food and
entertainment; wait, could this sound almost like some sort of fair?

I'll address the Picnic's features by category:

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES these could use more people to help run them:

FREE-to-PLAY
Nutshell boat-making (for piepan sailing)
Paper poppy-making
Bubble-blowing
Eggball
The Stereograph Nook, a shady corner with comfy seating for enjoying
stereoviews.

PAY-to-PLAY:
Fishpond game (prizes)
Toy boat-building (for sailing in a washtub and on 'Lake Roosevelt'
in the Tabletop Regatta).
The Regatta is free to enter, but of course requires a boat.
The Stereoscopic Photograph Parlour, where you can have a 3D portrait made.

THE BENEVOLENT BAZAAR
This will have a few stalls or tables, at which can be found
various appropriate goods, such as turn of the century or older
books, magazines and sheet music, plus antique or antique-looking
knickknacks, items of apparel, toys, stereoscopic views and viewers.
Some of these last are made for the occasion: prize-filled
'firecrackers', treasure balls, eggball sets and reprinted booklets
with stories and craft projects from vintage publications.

If anyone wishes to put items in the Bazaar on consignment (or
even donate a thing or two), just speak up. This would be an obvious
place for a milliner or clothier to set up, though it's a small event
and we're none of us going to get rich. A hat-decorating booth would
be lovely. Parasols, hatpins, and such would probably move very well.
Any number of things would!

FOOD
The regular Pardee House volunteers will be handling the food as
is usual, though they might need a hand here or there; it's hard to
predict at this point. There will be scrumptious regular (Taylor's)
and meatless sausages (prepared separately), and we hope to have
enough variety in the menu that everyone can find enough of the right
food and drink. You can always pack in some of your own picnic, but
remember, this is 1908 and we don't want to see any plastic. Waxed
paper is an appropriate disposable wrapping. Paper plates were
luckily introduced in 1904; paper towels first appeared in 1907, but
paper napkins didn't come out till the 30s. The earliest paper cup
(the "Health Kup"), a pleated type such as used to be found with
water coolers, has just appeared in our present 1908 as a measure to
make public fountains more hygienic.

The ice cream making needs people, perhaps even an Ice Cream
Director, someone with experience using an old-style hand-cranked ice
cream maker. We're planning multiple churns for the ice cream social;
if you have one to loan, you're in, and you can either be involved in
its use or leave it to others. We already have three, and at least
two more would be nice-- the more the merrier!

ENTERTAINMENT

For the Governor's Stirring Address, the singing of "America"
("My country, 'tis of thee") will be accompanied by a wind-up
gramophone, and moving chords from the baby organ will accent the
Governor's words. We'll be playing with these two later as well.

Mrs. Pardee's Mellifluous Musicale

Helen Pardee will present a piano-accompanied programme of
tasteful acts and appropriate music, including her much-lauded
rendition of "A Bird in a Gilded Cage".

The Paper Poppy Pageant portion of the show will showcase
contestants who have made a poppy-themed costume incorporating a
quantity of orange paper supplied to them (I have 400 feet of it!).
It was Governor Pardee who declared the poppy our state flower, so
this is a major decorative theme, along with the obvious patriotic one.
THE PAPER POPPY PAGEANT
There will be a small registration fee to cover supplies and any
postage needed. You can enter as an individual, couple or even
family. There are plenty of possibilities for costume themes: a Poppy
Fairy, the Knight of Poppies, Poppy Zeus and Hera, Poppy Romeo and
Juliet etc. or pure poppy fantasy with a turn of the century fllavor:
think Winsor McCay. Even a poppy monster! You can take any existing
outfit from 1908 or earlier and add on the poppy stuff. Easy! But do
remember, this is not only 1908, it's a Family Event at the home of a
very prominent citizen, so a certain degree of decorum is expected.
We're also thinking of a picture hat competition, which unlike
the Paper Poppy Pageant won't require pre-registration; one can just
show up in a really overdone hat and join others for judging at the
appropriate time. And how about an Alliteration Bee? Alliteration
always amply allays any awkwardness

We're also thinking of a picture hat competition, which unlike
the Paper Poppy Pageant wouldn't require pre-registration; one can
always amply allays any awkwardness.

As part of the stage programme (though perhaps performed on the
lawn, as the stage is quite small), there is a marvelous dance
opportunity; I have this piece from 1904, "The Dance of the Mist
Maiden", and have been dying to put it on for years. It's Terribly
Artistic, but really just a series of twelve simple poses, so it
doesn't necessarily require Maidens of balletic ability. It can be
performed solo or by as many dancers as are available, and the book
includes floor patterns for the choreography. Surely there are a few
ladies out there who'd be game! Grecian dances are all the rage
nowadays, after all, and I have a huge bolt of pink chiffon to devote
to seeing the Maidens lavishly draped.

I'd very much like to find four girls and young women to be the
Pardee daughters, ages 13-20. They might be among or even be all
off-- the Mist Maidens, of course renamed Poppy Maidens.

WHAT TO WEAR
The public is being advised that period attire is, a la PEERS,
"admired but not required"-- but very very strongly encouraged, and
we're backing that up with discounts. It's really not hard to put
something together for 1900-1908 when it's not formal attire. This is
a gorgeous era: art nouveau, Gibson girls (possible bathing dress
show?), Teddy Roosevelt, ragtime, Florodora, the Arrow collar man...
What a marvelous picture we can make! The ladies get to be frilly
flowers with big hair and big hats (and don't forget your gloves) and
the men can be dapper with straw hat (skimmer or Panama) and cane
(ditto on the gloves and you can always take them off if you want).

The premise is that everyone is either an invited guest or
employee of ex-Governor George Pardee, so some pretense of Society
manners is only natural.

AND IT'S GREEN!
Also, in the interests of Less Waste, More Period, (and lots
More Classy) there will be no plastic or paper tableware or
silverware offered. That's right, no plastic water bottles; you can
leave yours outside with the 21st century and enjoy eating and
drinking from the real thing!

Visit <http://www.pardeehome.org/>www.pardeehome.org/ for more about
the house and its history. There's just a little information about
the Picnic there and it's rather garbled, so keep checking back for
new postings-- we're working on it! Because it's complicated getting
any changes made on that site I'm putting up the Picnic Page
temporarily at <http://www.the3dfairy.com/>www.The3DFairy.com, so
that's where to check. Should be something to see soon!

Contact me, Annie Lore at
<mailto:ImminentIdea@aol.com>ImminentIdea@aol.com with questions,
ideas and propositions. You can also write
<mailto:PardeePicnic@aol.com>PardeePicnic@aol.com for me or David the
museum director, though he's pretty busy with something else at
present. The email link on the website doesn't seem to deliver
dependably, so don't write there.

We'd like to see the people who really appreciate this kind of
event have a chance to see it and be part of it, and get acquainted
with this too-little-known property, which is a potential venue for
various period functions. It's going to be a Very Nice Time!

Many regards,

Madam A.

Dear Neverwas Crew and Friends -

After a long winter of recooperating from Burning Man, Robodock, and getting married, we're back in full steam (no pun intended) with preparations for the upcoming Maker's Faire on May 3 and May 4 at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds 2495 South Delaware Street. Check out the info on their web: www.makerfaire.com.

We would love to have as many folks as we can come join us as it's going to be a fantastic steampunk weekend! John Sarriugarte is headlining the fire and steam exhibits with a stage and his Boiler Bar devoted to performers of music, fire and steam - Makers will be staying open until 10pm on Saturday to present these events at a time when you can really enjoy the fire performances.

We will be taking the Haul and have plans for it to drive around this time! We will also be hosting some other fine steam performers such as La Legion Fantastique, Kimric's famous steam-powered engines and boiler, as well as a wedding on the Haul on Sunday at 2:30pm. Hallie and Corey will be tying the knot on the balcony of the Haul in full steampunk/Victorian regalia, so it should be quite the finale for the weekend.

We are putting the finishing touches on the Haul every Sunday now until Makers from 12pm-6pm at our home at American Steel. We may get a little of later start tomorrow as we'll be at the Antique Flea Market in Alameda looking for more gadgets to add to our growing assembly, but you can call Shannon (510-292-5879) for exact time. Please come dressed for dirt!

I am also putting together the work crew/performers list for setup and breakdown of the Haul for Makers and would love help from whomever wants to join us. There will be 18 free passes to Makers for the first folks to jump aboard! Here's the schedule:

Sunday, April 27 - Pack up the Haul (12pm-??)
Tuesday, April 29 - Take Haul to Makers (afternoon; need 1 other person to drive with Shannon)
Wednesday, April 30 - Set up Haul - need 5 strong people for this (late morning/afternoon)
Thursday, May 1 - Makers Day (a day of workshops/talks for all the Makers; no Haul activities planned; we will update you on this)
Friday, May 2 - Final dress up and decorating (10am-4pm; schools touring all day)
Saturday, May 3 - Makers Faire (10am-10pm)
Sunday, May 4 - Makers Faire (11am-6pm)
Monday, May 5 - Breakdown of Haul - need 5 strong people for this (late morning); move Haul to the Shipyard

If you have questions, let us know - looking forward to a fun time at Makers this year!

Bonjour,

We are holding auditions for actors for La Legion Fantastique! This is a new attraction in the children's area at this year's Dickens Fair. We need fun, charismatic actors with a love for Victorian science fiction (mostly Jules Verne) to populate our environment.

LIST OF CHARACTERS WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

HISTORICAL CHARACTERS
Jules Verne - Yes! We are looking for someone to play the chronicler of these amazing adventures. The person we are looking for should match his appearance, and have a relatively thorough knowledge of Verne's works/life...or be able to take a crash course in it. Our Verne would perform readings, and interact with the "real life" personae from his books.

BOOK CHARACTERS
THEME: “ Around The World In 80 Days”

1. Passpartout - Fogg's "right hand man".
2. Inspector Fix - A determined Scotland Yard officer always trying to catch Fogg in illegal activity.

THEME: “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea”

1. Conseil - Lab assistant of Prof. Arronax
2. Prof. Arronax - French professor of marine biology.
3. Ned Land - Canadian harpooneer...slayer of giant squid.

THEME: ”Journey To The Center Of The Earth”

1. Axel Lidenbrock - Nephew to Prof. Lidenbrock, adventurous youth.
2. Hans Bjelke - Danish hunter and guide to Lidenbrock expedition.

THEME: “From The Earth To The Moon”
1. IMPEY BARBICANE, P.G.C
2. James T. Maston (has a hook for a hand)
3. Michel Ardan

THEME: “ Mysterious Island”
1. Cyrus Smith - Railroad engineer in Union army
2. Nebuchadnezzar - African American assistant to Cyrus Smith
3.Bonadventure Pencroff - A talented sailor
4. Herbert Brown - Pencroff's young protege'
5. Gideon Spilett - Union war correspondent / reporter.

THEME: “Master Of The World”
1. Robur The Conquerer - Meglomaniac inventor of flying machines...
2. Agent John Strock - U.S. secret agent bent on protecting world from mad scientists

MISC.

1. Mrs. Weldon (From "Dick Sand, Boy Captain")
2. Marfa Strogoff (From "Michael Strogoff")
3. Myra Roderich (From "Secret of Wilhelm Storitz")
4. Lady Munro (From "Steam House")
5. Dame Hansen & Hulda Hansen (From "Lottery Ticket")
6 Miss Mary Grant & Helena Grant (From "Children of Captain Grant")
7. Edith & Jane Edgerton (From "Golden Volcano")
8. Miss Campbell (From "The Green Ray")
9. Mistress Branican (main character of "Mistress Branican")
10. Cascabel (from "Cesar Cascabel")

NOTE: I realize that there just aren't a lot of strong female roles in Verne's works. Blame Mr. Verne for that one. HOWEVER, I am happy to work with interested ladies on forging strong characters that will fit into the worlds established in our main list of books. Example could be Prof. Arronax's sister (a fabrication) who is just as intelligent, but is assisting her brother in spreading the story of "20k Leagues" around the world. Feel free to contact me, and we'll work something out...I'm very flexible! If you have an idea for a historical/fictional character that is not on this list, please tell me what you have in mind, and we may find a place for it.

If you would like to audition, please EMAIL ME at: poverstreet@gmail.com.
Please let me know what character(s) you are interested in playing and evenings you are available. I will contact each of you with audition times and location.
To help Neverwas Haul defray transportation costs, we are making these available for the small sum of $500 round trip - we ship from and return to American Steel warehouse in Oakland. Contact Major Catastrophe (aka Shannon O'Hare) at 510-292-5879 if you are interested in being part of our endeavor. Act quickly, as there are only 6 boxes available.

NEVERWAS HAUL &
GRAND STEAM EXPEDITION

21 Spring Road
Orinda, CA 94563
510-292-5879
Shannon_O_Hare@yahoo.com

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

Neverwas Haul, a self-propelled 3-story Victorian House, made from 75% recycled equipment and materials, returns with new interiors, operating system, and collections from its travels around the world (i.e., oddities of the Jules Verne era including a Camera Obscura, described below). The Haul measures 24 feet long by 24 feet high and 12 feet wide and is built on the base of a 5th wheel travel trailer.

In addition to the Haul, we will be creating the following “green” systems to be used in our Steam Camp under the title of Grand Steam Expedition:

•	Steam/solar distiller system: This will convert gray water from our camp into water to be re-used in the boilers of the steam engines. This will be built in the style of a Victorian machine utilizing technology from over 150 years ago. We will be able to reuse waste water rather than having it trucked out for disposal. The solar distiller will be made out of galvanized sheet metal, glass and plumbing fixtures. It measures approximately 8 feet long by 4 feet wide and will be installed in our camp as part of the Grand Steam Expedition (sketch included). Demonstrations of its use will be scheduled for participants to attend.
•	Steam-powered systems: Not only are we bringing back our alternative fuel (propane) vehicle, the runabout art car from last year, Kristie’s Flyer, but we’ll also be building a steam generator that will power our Steam Café. The steam generator will be built very much like our other creations, from available, salvaged antique ironwork and clever use of common plumbing fixtures (sketch included). This will also be another exhibit in the Grand Steam Expedition.
•	Bio-Peat Mill: We will be converting coffee grounds, sawdust, paper, charcoal (wood from the burn piles around the Playa and other burnable MOOP) and Playa dust into burnable fuel pellets and briquettes to be used in our steam generator and other demonstratable engines. It will be a custom built machine in the style of Victorian machinery, approximately 3 feet by 3 feet. Once again, antique ironwork and clever plumbing will be used. There will be hands-on demonstration of the manufacture of the pellets/briquettes for the participants to learn and make for themselves. Since there will be a high need for coffee grounds to be used to make the bio-peat, we will be enlisting the support of all the other caffeine addicts in the area and using their coffee grounds, thereby eliminating the need for disposal.
•	Grand Steam Expedition Stage: All above green items will be demonstrated on our stage complex, built in the design of a classic Victorian stage show with limelights, hand-painted backdrops, and stage props. On the stage, we will also be offering magic lantern demonstrations, giving the latest news from the “front”, both in literal and figurative means. The Hibernian Glee Club will also be performing drinking songs from Ireland as well as songs specific to the Burning Man community (Mr. Sans Pants, to the tune of Mr. Sand Man). Another highlight of the stage will be our roving group of performers from Phat Mandee, our Cabaret singer, to Dr. Hal and the Hobo Goblins as well as lectures by our “Professors” on their studies of the natives of the Black Rock region and their own personal adventures. The stage will be made from recycled wood and canvas, and measures 12 feet by 8 feet by 2 feet off the ground. The backdrop will be made from canvas and measures approximately 10 feet high by 12 feet wide.
•	Camera Obscura: A cooperative effort of a number of artists, photographers and lens makers, the Camera Obscura will be installed in the turret of the Haul. With the support of a trained technician, the public will see many views of the Playa as the Haul moves around it. A camera obscura is a series of lenses creating an image that is projected onto a concave screen table (sketch included). The size of the unit is approximately 12 feet tall by 3 feet wide and will be made from hand-made glass lenses, recycled brass fittings and antique ironwork.
•	Academy Performers: There will be 20 performers and 15 crew in Victorian-style costumes as part of our overall performance piece for the Neverwas Project. They will interact with the participants, demonstrating above pieces, giving talks and exposes on Victorian technology and science, period musical productions, all in keeping with our theme of a Jules Verne style expedition to Black Rock City. Last year, we developed a Victorian theme camp, which allowed participants to join us and play characters themselves. This will be a continuation of our efforts to keep the theme evolving and moving in new directions as the Neverwas Project story unfolds for it’s Second Year.

PHILOSOPHICAL STATEMENT:

In keeping with the philosophy of Burning Man’s desire to offer a venue for artists to explore and express their imagination, the Neverwas Project has created an imaginary world based on the science fiction of the Victorian era where steam technology is considered cutting edge. Our desire is to portray this Jules Verne style world and invite others to participate with us, so that we can all experience a time when brave explorers ventured out into the unknown in search of adventure.

By sharing our steam technology with the Burning Man community, participants learn about a forgotten technology that was so important in our past, perhaps to learn something that can be utilized today. Hydrogen fuel cells and biofuels were invented during the Victorian period and many early vehicles were run on what’s now considered alternative fuel systems (i.e., electric, steam and alcohol powered engines). We plan to use some of this technology in creating our solar distiller, steam generator and bio-peat mill and will utilize the waste from our camp (gray water, paper products, coffee grounds) so that we can recycle these items. We plan to offer lectures and demonstrations on our Grand Steam Expedition Stage to explain to the community how they, too, can easily recycle their disposable waste, both on the Playa and when they return home.

Our interaction with the Black Rock community in 2006 and the effect we had inspired many of the participants to join us in this fantasy world. We are looking forward to continuing this portrayal and involving more participants in our performance pieces as we take the Haul around the Playa. In that way, we can also serve as examples of a “green” project, not just in our philosophy but also in the way we run our camp.

SUPPORT TEAM

Our main crew numbers 15 and includes machinists, wood workers, welders, and scenic artists. We also have a performing team of approximately 20 participants who will develop and manage the Grand Steam Expedition Stage as well as participate in assembly and dismantling of the Haul and Steam Camp. Many of our crew are veterans of Burning Man and most were involved with Neverwas Haul in 2006, and are well-versed in the needs of the Playa and the protection of the environment.

No artwork will be engulfed in flames and no fire will come in contact with the Playa.

Dear Neverwas Crew & Friends -

We had our first organizational meeting last week and it went very well. We outlined the projects that we want to do at Burning Man so that Shannon and I could put together the proposal due on the 15th. Liam is going to do a separate proposal for the Wind Buoy project that he and Kimric have been working on. So far, this is what we're proposing:

1. Upgrade and Retrofit the Haul's engine, chassis, tires, interiors and exteriors.
2. Build a solar distiller for converting gray water.
3. Convert coffee grounds, sawdust, paper and playa dust into useable fuel for either a steam engine or a gasifier, which in turn would run a generator for the steam camp.
4. Build a telescope with Robin Fox; build a Camera Obscrua with Kevin O'Hare, Liz, and others

Other ideas that we're going to discuss at the next meeting will be:

1. Steam Theater and Stage - develop a vaudeville-like Victorian theater for performances, magic lantern show, Glee Club performances, lectures from the professors of the Academy, etc.
2. Liz will present her ideas about collaboration with the stereoptic photographer and photograph archives for display in the Haul of previous "adventures"
3. Folks to work on the website (Hallie/Phat Mandee?), publishable materials, press releases, products for sale, comic book development (Meredith)

We will have weekly meetings on Mondays at 7:30pm at the Shipyard starting this Monday, the 12th and will have our first Haul retrofit work day on Sunday, February 18th at 12pm. In general, the plan is to work on the Haul most Sundays and then as needed for the projects to be completed.

Please let your friends know what we're up to in case they want to work with us. We will be publishing regular updates on Tribe/Neverwas Haul to let the general public know.

As far as the actual "prize" is concerned, for all we know BORG2 has $63 to it's name, but the thought is sweet and you should vote in case they have more than $63. They might have a whole eighty bucks or something.....

Whoever receives the most votes (assuming I learn who they are) will be announced at the San Francisco Decompression Party, and will recieve a check for the entire balance in the BORG2 checking and the paypal bigart@terrakino.net accounts on the day I write the check and close the accounts.

I reserve the right to cast my own vote to break a tie

Anyone who now donates more than $20 dollars can receive a genuine and handsome Collector's Edition BORG2 All Excess Lam badge .
Then finally, we can pull the plug on that alarming and wonderful experiment. "

--Hey gang here's a copy-and-paste of the word file announcing the imminent steamboat regatta. Oh, and the word from Dick Vennerbeck is that Ron Parola's steam powered Margarita blender will be there and working too. So saddle up that three-wheeler and bring it over!
--------------------------------
2006 Sacramento Delta Steamboat Regatta

Attention all boat captains and crew! Ready those boats! The time is approaching to attend the 32nd Sacrament Delta Steamboat Regatta held at the famous B&W Resort, 964 Brannon Island Rd., Delta Loop, California (ph. 916-777-6161). The official dates are Sept. 23, 2006 and Sept. 24, 2006 (give or take a few days as some arrive early & some stay late).

This year will be a ‘lil bit blah as we are not expecting notorious Jesse James & crew of the “Monster Garage”. What a great time we had last year with the bang & back race and being filmed for national televised viewing!

This year it is back to the standard menu of having a great time with just the usual group and activities. Main activity will be boating so pack lots of wood, oil or gas ( yes, gas burning boats are always welcome!) Add a few vintage steam cars and motorcycles for an entertaining weekend. Don’t forget your sunscreen as the weather has been very hot and sunny this summer. Then again, we have experienced cold days & showers in past years so do bring a jacket or sweatshirt.

Saturday’s picnic cruise to Westgate Landing Park @ Terminous will leave around 10:00 A.M. It has been suggested by MOJO’s Captain John Woodsen that this might be a good time to snap some group pictures of the “fleet” as they maneuver the treacherous currents of the Mokelumne River.

Upon returning to the B&W docks, it will be time for that much anticipated swap meet. Bring your unwanted treasures to the dock area to sell or swap. If you have nothing to sell and don’t want to buy, come and swap B.S. with your fellow captains. B.S. is FREE!

Saturday evening the gang always has a potluck dinner. We meet on the levee road (between the upper cabins & the boat docks). Please bring your favorite dishes to share. Appetites are hearty. Main dishes, salads and deserts are always delicious. Picnic tables and benches are provided. Our gracious host, B& W Resort, has requested that kitchen tables and chairs found in the cabins remain in the cabins. Please do not bring them outside. A short meeting is held after the potluck with the usual announcements & presentations. I say short meeting as the mosquitoes (nasty little bugs) tend to arrive at dusk. Speaking of critters, please remember that pets are not welcome guests at B&W Resort.

Now, back to boating with a night run down the Channel. Running light are a must and remember that people do live along the shore so don’t torment them too much with those whistles & sirens! I can’t believe I just typed that!!!

Planned for Sunday morning is an unofficial trip down the main channel for breakfast. Two choice places are Moore Riverboat Landing or Light House Resort.

See you soon and let’s make it a safe, fun and memorable occasion.
Regards, Jerry & Phyllis Blain
