Physicists at the University of Colorado recently announced the discovery of the heaviest element yet known to science. This new element has been tentatively named "Administratium". Administratium has 1 neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 111 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312.

Yet, now, here they are in 2008, elevated to newfound and - some might say - logic-bending status. Theirs has become the unpolished, unconditioned anatomy of Hollywood's latest incarnation of leading man: The bong-happy brood of producer Judd Apatow whose latest comedy, "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," opened Friday with everydude Jason Segel seeking solace with Mila Kunis after being dumped by Kristen Bell. There was a time when you had to look like Warren Beatty to suffer such cinematic indignities.

Of course, there have always been exceptions to the leading-man playbook - Dustin Hoffman and Woody Allen are two examples in semi-recent history - but rarely have they arrived in such droves, all courtesy of Apatow Inc.: Seth Rogen in "Knocked Up;" Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse in "Superbad;" John C. Reilly in "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story;" even Steve Carell in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" who, while fit, is far from the bronzed, burnished likes of Matthew McConaughey.

Actors were once earmarked for stardom because, so went the wisdom, "men want to be like them and women want to be with them." But with the members of camp Apatow, it could be amended to "men are like them and women already have one at home."

It's a development that hasn't gone unnoticed by audiences, critics or industry veterans. Lorne Michaels - whose "Saturday Night Live" has delivered Hollywood some of its most indelible comic superstars - told Sun Media last summer the definition of what constitutes a leading man is in a state of flux.

"The leading men now are not conventional - Will Ferrell or Ben Stiller or the guys from "Knocked Up" or "Superbad." It couldn't have happened 20 years ago. Even with Steve Martin or Chevy (Chase) you could see in the early days how they could be leading men."

For Apatow, the popularity of his films and their love-handled lotharios is easily explained. "There's a lot of people like us out there who see themselves in our work," Apatow said during interviews for "Walk Hard."

He should know. He's married to actress Leslie Mann, who he often casts in his productions (she was Katherine Heigl's sister in "Knocked Up" and the drunk who takes Carell on a nightmarish ride in Virgin) and presumably his experiences have manifested themselves in his work.

"This is all Judd reliving the dynamics of his marriage," says L.A.-based blogger Jeffrey Wells, who wrote about Apatow's anti-hunk zone on his site Hollywood-elsewhere.com.

"I think everyone knows down deep that ... birds of a feather flock together. It's very unusual for hotties to be with galumphs. Ask anybody. The only reason it happens, and it's the same in this town as it is in New York and elsewhere, is that the guys are very witty, which women love and find sexy, but also very loaded and have connections ...

"Seth in real life is a hip, smart guy. But he's playing slackers who wear Cabo San Lucas T-shirts and smoke doobies. And that doesn't work to my understanding ... The only time you're going to have a guy who's a 6 with a girl who's an 8.5 is when it's about power."

Maybe so, but Rogen, Hill and Segel should probably think twice before mending their slovenly images with a shave, a finer choice of wardrobe or a treadmill. Consider the case of Jack Black, who classed up - presumably in a bid for rom-com viability - in the achingly-traditional "The Holiday" only to watch the movie tank.

For the moment, the Apatow formula appears to resonate because women find the movies diverting and the man-child characters - dorks and dweebs they may be - charming. (Better still, they don't have to date them in real life.) For men, it allows them to visit an imaginary couch-potato kingdom where it's acceptable to play video games and eat Doritos all day long because you know a babe just like Bell is waiting to get with you.

Says Wells, "It's a very, very nice fantasy."

Microbial Fuel Cells Generate Rice Paddy Power

Dutch researchers have developed a microbial fuel cell that allows them generate up to 330 watts of power per hectare of farmed rice paddies.

The researchers, whose work appears in Environmental Science and Technology, used bacteria present in the soil to create a micro power plant. When bacteria eat organic matter, they generate excess electrons, which can be harvested. Peter Girgius, a Harvard microbiology professor described the electric potential of the soil a few months ago.

"There are terawatts moving through our biosphere. Solar energy ends up in our soil and sediment," he said. "Think of it as underground solar energy."

The technology has emerged over the last year, with several startups like Girgius' Living Power Systems trying to tap the off-grid market. But it's a tough sell in countries that have access to cheap and broadly available power from the grid. Still, the omnipresent J. Craig Venter Institute and other scientists are working to genetically engineer a better bacterial generator.

However, the couple billion people who live without power and largely in rural settings could be a perfect market for this technology. After all, three hundred watts isn't a ton, but it's certainly comparable to Potenco's pull cord generator produces a max of 40 watts, and the wind generator we covered a few weeks ago, which was aiming for 50 watts. It's difficult to know about the durability or scalability of the MFCs but at the very least, the microbial power farm is another concept for architects and engineers to think about when designing clean energy solutions for off-grid villages.

Though long dreamed of by theoretical physicists and science-fiction authors, the quantum slacks represent the first wearable pair of non-Newtonian pants, putting America one step closer to a complete casual wardrobe that transcends classical physics.

DALLAS–At a press conference Monday, Haggar physicists announced the successful development of "Quantum Slacks," attractive, wrinkle-free pants that paradoxically behave like both formal and casual wear.

"With this breakthrough, pants enter a whole new dimension," said Dr. Daniel Chang, head of the Haggar team. "Conventional notions about the properties and possibilities of slacks have been completely turned on their head."

"For decades, we conducted level-one physics experiments in which we collided individual subatomic particles in a highly controlled laboratory setting," Chang said. "But an array of technical hurdles kept us from taking the next logical step: colliding pants."

Preliminary tests conducted last month at the Haggar Pants Propulsion Laboratory in Dallas indicate that the quantum slacks, generated by smashing together two larger sizes of slacks at near-light speeds, defy scientific explanation.

Said Chang: "We placed the pants in a casual lawn-party setting and discovered them to be functional and comfortable. But, against all logic, in subsequent tests the pants performed equally well at a formal business luncheon. This represents a baffling, 'Schrödinger's Pants' duality. Items Found In Garbage To Be Turned Into Lamp Someday

MINNEAPOLIS—Joe Lennek, 24, a part-time pizza delivery driver and 1997 University of Minnesota dropout, rescued a three-foot length of metallic pipe from the trash Monday in the hopes of one day converting it into a lamp.

"The Dumpster was filled with all sorts of cool shit," Lennek said. "There was an old clothes rack, a bunch of mannequin heads, and this huge stack of records—everything from Poco to Mantovani. But when I saw that pipe, I immediately pictured it as a lamp. I'm so psyched that I snagged it before somebody else did."

Added Lennek: "Who would throw out something like this? This is such a perfect piece to make something with."

In spite of the fact that he has never made a lamp before and lacks electrical-wiring experience, Lennek is confident he can transform the pipe into a lamp.

"Making the lamp should be cake," Lennek said. "I'm sure [roommate] Dick [Donovan] has one of those Time-Life books on wiring or something."

A self-described "found-object hobbyist," Lennek frequently brings home discarded items for use in art projects. Recent finds include a frayed rug, a bass-drum pedal, three broken televisions, and a piece of a hamster Habitrail. With the exception of the rug, which has been turned into a decorative wall hanging, the rest of the objects still await use.

"I was gonna use the pedal as, like, one of those open-close foot things on a garbage can," Lennek said. "But the garbage can I was gonna attach it to was too big. So that's temporarily on hold until I can find a smaller can."
