In Tibetan mysticism, the tulpa is a physical manifestation of the will, a being or object created, intentionally or unintentionally, directly from the energy of the mind. There are folk stories of tulpa’s manifesting from someone’s anger or unfulfilled desires, which then take on lives of their own.
It occurs to me that what we do when we create a profile on Facebook or Tribe or MySpace, etc., is create a sort of electronic tulpa, a stand-in for ourselves that to a certain degree, has it’s own independent existence separate from our own. After all, even when we are not online, our profiles are still out there, interacting with people who look at them, continuing conversations we have long since abandoned.
I can imagine a time not too far in the future when these electronic tulpas will be much more interactive and independent. Our artificially intelligent substitutes will buy our clothes and talk to our mother-in-laws when we don’t want to.
How do you feel about your electronic tulpa, now and in the future. Do you ever worry about the impression you leave via your profile and posts online? Would you like to take it even further in the future, and let it take over a bunch of other responsibilities?

Re: Your Electric Tulpa
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 11:15 AMI think the internet would a much more civilized place if you could feel it when someone punched your tulpa in the mouth... :)
I used to get really mad when people would behave in a "trolling" manner on the internet, I think a lot of people put a TON of negativity into the online world via these forums, negativity they definitely wouldn't put out there otherwise. I keep my profiles somewhat private and mostly honest because I believe I should be accountable as a person for what my online self says and does. I'm maybe a little less reserved online and I try to stay positive because words are very dry and a smile can't be projected into a forum.
Once we have avatars that can express moods like our faces can and we can interact more in real time, like people sitting around in a room, I think the usefulness of the internet as a social gathering place will finally be realized. I have definitely met more good and interesting people than rotten people, but the rotten ones are REALLY rotten...

Tue, January 6, 2009 - 2:09 PMI think that Electronic Tulpas would be more along the lines of internet spiders. Trolling around from page to page retrieving and relaying information or computer viruses that destroy with a vengeance.
I think of our profiles as more akin to mile markers or billboards. Disseminating information and you can leave a message but there's no active interaction.
Just an opinion -
