When you oil your neys..what kind of oil do you use?
I used to have some almond oil but now can't seem to find any. I heard olive oil was bad for some reason. I've got a bottle of roasted sesame I'm thinking of using, but I'm leery. Any suggestions?

Re: What kind of oil...?
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 3:00 PMNey oil, Right?
We have to squeeze tons of donax cane for just a bottle full!
Actually the fellow that I got my first ney from recommended good quality olive oil.
So that is what I use on all my neys and sometimes on my other wood instruments as well.
No rotting yet, I poor lots into them, but mine are anly 1-6 years old.
Maybe the experts out there know better?
On the roasted sesame oil, I know on a bagpipe list- this oil issue came up and one point was whether
the oil would polymerize or not. I would guess in a ney, where you can't polish the inside, polymerizing would
cause a thick film to eventually build up. Maybe the roasted oils are different than the raw and more
likely to polymerize? Like boiled linseed oil, which hardens and gets gummy. -

Re: What kind of oil...? - and exactly how?
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 8:26 PMDo you:
1. block all holes and fill the Ney with oil; or
2. submerge the ney in oil

Re: What kind of oil...? - and exactly how?
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 3:34 PMI sort of block them with my fingers, but it's messy. Maybe I will block the holes?
Maybe little pieces of masking tape?
I have not submerged neys.
Most of my projects are home-made, neys, or other woodwinds of pecan wood,
so I use lots of oil and just let it drip thru. But I did read on a web site for recorder
construction that they submerge the instruments in oil and mark the oil level
on the container, after several months (!) they note the level, and eventually the
instruments emerge as completely sturated in oil. But I've not seen anything
like this for ney. -

Sun, February 10, 2008 - 9:06 PMThanks for your comment - any preference as to oil type - I've read about taping the finger holes and plaicing a baloon in the bottom hole. -

Re: What kind of oil...? - and exactly how?
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 3:17 AMA friend of mine has the following to say:
"as for the nay, the almond oil is the best but you can also use sesame oil
or olive oil. i guess the most important part is that the oil is as clear as
possible not with some visible particles. the way i oil it is that i tape
all the holes tight and then pour the olive inside. i also drop a few
droplets to the outside and rub. you don?t need to discard the oil and you
can use it few times until it looks not clean" -

Re: What kind of oil...? - and exactly how? and how much?
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 8:45 AMA further note, I have now sourced almond oil, which is not terribly more expensive than olive oil but clearly much thinner. For a kiz ney, about 230 ml is more than enough.

Re: What kind of oil...?
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 11:25 PMLast time I did it, I forget what kind of oil I'd used. I got some almond oil though as I remember using that on my kaval with no bad effects and the roasted sesame I wasn't too sure about.
Last time I oiled them I got one of those long plastic thingies you put wallpaper in to get it wet. Its like a big plastic trough thing. Then I put a bunch of oil in there, and a bunch of neys, and did them all at once, and let them soak a bit. Then when I thought they had enough I put them all in flower vase vertically to let the oil drip out. I'm not saying this is the best method though as I'm a bit new at this myself. The person who got me started on ney (who plays professionally) was the one who suggested the wallpaper tube thingy. -

Re: What kind of oil...?
Sun, February 17, 2008 - 3:33 AMI am using sesame oil with excelent results. In the future I will try almond oil also.
I learn to do like this:
I put my ney inside a PVC pipe (thin wall pipe) and I pour the oil until cover the ney. I lean against the wall.
As the ney floats, I put another piece of pipe (a thinner pipe for electricity) on top of the ney to make it stay inside the oil (you can use another object just heavy enough to prevent the ney from floating).
I leave during the night and in the morning I take out of the oil and let it dripping during the day leaning against the wall . Sometimes I wait until the next day to start playing. -

Re: What kind of oil...?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 8:59 PMWow. I wonder what takes more oil, that or the wallpaper thing. I don't fill up the wallpaper thing..just put it in the bottom and sort of roll the neys in it. I let them sit in it and ..stir gently once in a while.

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 9:33 AMSweet almond oil is a popular choice as it does not go rancid like many other veggie oils. -

Re: What kind of oil...?
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 8:23 AMI have to agree with David, almond oil is better. Make sure it's food grade almond oil with nothing else added. I go to a massage supply store here in Seattle and get a half gallon of the stuff. It's affordable that way. I use the PVC idea. I sealed one end with a cap, then put the nay in it. Fill it up with oil and let it sit for a while. When I take it out, I let it drip for a few minutes into a bowl, wipe it down, then I put a towel in my bathroom sink, place the nays upside down on the towel (to soak up any remaining oil), and lean them against the tile wall (no stains).
It works quite well & doesn't take long. Be sure to let them drain overnight or at least several hours. There's nothing worse than performing in a nice suit (tan dress pants) and not noticing this giant oil stain on your thigh as you walk around and greet members of the community after the show. A freshly oiled nay will drip on you the first time you play it, lay a decorative hand towel over your leg to help with this.
Hope this helps. -

Re: What kind of oil...?
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 8:14 AMGood advice and a simple way to oil your ney! Now to find time to do mine, which are overdue. As a matter of fact, I am behind on practice time too.
I have also found good cheap almond oil at major Indian groceries if you have any near by.
