Ney with a key (and ney book in English)

I have this book by Mahmoud Effat. By the way guys..this is one of the few ney books out there in English.

http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&id=9qi_UvxctPUC&dq=mahmoud+effat&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=L55UBdqcv8&sig=klwaPQThV8QAnGa-x203MmXripo

In it he mentions there are neys specially made with a couple extra keys on them..like a clarinet..that help you play B and E natural (on the D ney), but that they can't play the quarter tones. I've never seen a ney like this...has anyone else? Know where to find one? I'm curious. (I don't want to replace my regular neys..just want to try this one).

Are there any descriptions of the steps by which professional ney makers make a ney?

I found a perfect segment of donax cane in a friends yard by the beach. Nice and round section,
nodes in perfect spacing for a docca, maybe a little green. I want to get this one just right.
What I do:
I usually mark the holes end end cuts from my chart. Cut the length 5 mm longer, burn holes,
than hollow the nodes, finally pierce the top node. Than play, and trim the ends.
But what do the experts do?

When you oil your neys..what kind of oil do you use?
I used to have some almond oil but now can't seem to find any. I heard olive oil was bad for some reason. I've got a bottle of roasted sesame I'm thinking of using, but I'm leery. Any suggestions?

Ney cases

Not sure if I asked this yet but...what is everyone using for ney cases out there? I would love to get one of the little suitcase style ones, where the neys lay flat and have little bits in there to keep them seperated. I don't know where to get one without buying neys too however.

Right now I'm using a blueprint tube thing. Its a long plastic tube with a strap from one end to the other, and I can sling it over my shoulder cross wise. It works pretty well. I poked holes in it so they can breathe a bit. Its not completely non crushable, but its pretty resistant.
The case expands to different lengths, so I taped it at the right length.

Pros: Cheap, easy to obtain, very portable and light, fairly protective, has a shoulder strap
Cons: Needs to be taped to the right length or it keeps expanding annoyingly. If the cap unscrews why you are carrying it..the case falls off and the neys fall out..this is no fun. You can't just set the neys in it keeping them easily accessible while still somewhat protected, you have to draw them out each time.

Anyone have any other home made case? I've heard of pool cue cases being used, fishing rod cases, and I was eyeing a poke chip case the other day, wondering if it was long enough.

Fake Egyptian "Ney"

This may be heresy, but I've come across a website for Eric the Flute Maker which has a transverse blown "Egyptian Flute." The instrument also apparently has 4 finger holes in front and one in back. Eric makes the point that end-blown flutes are a heck of a lot more difficult for western lips and his audio samples sound pretty good to my inexperienced ears. I would assume that a transverse flute would be more limited pitch adjustment for quarter and microtones and I'm not sure how far you can get with 5 finger holes. I'm not adverse to compromising authenticity but don't want an exotic-sounding toy either. Anybody out there have experience with these?

Hi All
I thought it might be interesting to see if people on this group can read music and if they play the Ney from written music.I have never learnt to read music and it is something that I am finding increasingly annoying.
I find it very frustrating that there is so much written music for the Turkish Ney out there that I can't use.

I have played the Ney for almost a year now and even if I am very far away from feeling comfortable with how I playt I am undoubtedly mesmerised by it. i am writing from Santiago (Chile), my home city, adding up to the critical mass in the southern hemisphere. Peace to all. m.

Greetings to all... I am a new Tribe member

Ahlan,

My name is David, I live in Seattle, WA. I am a professional nay & mizmar player with the House of Tarab Arabic Music Ensemble.
See our website: houseoftarab.com, or myspace.com/davidfmcgrath. We have one CD out & two on the way (release date May 17th).

I just joined tribe tonight (after my bandmates and students have been telling me about it for months). I have not set up my homepage yet, but hope to soon.

Playing the nay can be a lonely existence.
Here in Seattle, there are several oud players, a couple of kanun players, a few violinists, lots and lots of drummers, but nay players are hard to come by. I know of a few Persian nay players, one Turkish Nezen, but no other Arab Nayati (unless they only play at home).
I have been playing for almost 10 years, mostly learning on my own, with occasional opportunities to study with nay teachers traveling through town, or with Scott Marcus UCSB, or Omar Faruk Tekbilek in Mendecino. My studies of maqam are with singers, or other instrumentalists.
Now that I am teaching, and making quality nays for students, I wanted to start networking and getting to know others who are in love with this instrument. I did not grow up in the Middle East so anything I can learn or share is always incredibly valuable.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you...

David

Hi
I have been having a go at making PVC Ney type flutes for a while now.I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the constriction in or below a ney mouthpiece does?Bulgarian and Macedonian Kavals don't seem to have it.

Thanks

Dear friends:
I am doing a research on the physics of the ney. For that, I need to collect data from many flutes in order to treat the results statistically. If you have the time and patience, choose your best flutes and please fill the form bellow (you will need a caliper for the diameter).

Thanks in advance

So I'm a bit curious as to who in this tribe plays what sort of ney. Do you play Arabic nay, Turkish ney, or Persian ney....or like me dabble at all three, with my Persian chops being the weakest.
I started off with a Syrian teacher, but lately have focused more on the Turkish Mevlevi style. And am still trying to get a good upper register with the Persian ney!

I need help. I did something stupid and forgot the whole reeds that are still moist should not be in closed containers thing. You'd think, having mad a science experiment of some mey reads once, that I'd remember this. Apparently not.

So I had my neys, some pvc and some reed, in a black plastic blueprint tube. It makes a great case, and his quite protective and easily portable and can be strapped on your back. The only trouble is...its a bit too well sealed, and I see one of my neys is showing signs of..bad things happening inside it.

So I took it out and tried to clean it some, put some more oil in it and am leaving it sit out in the air but...I think it needs a bit more than that. Is there any way to clean the inside of a reed ney without hurting it? Pipe cleaner maybe? Has anyone else run into this problem before?

I feel like a bad ney mama or something.

Pseudo-neys

Anyone else going to Pennsic? (http://www.pennsicwar.org/penn36/index.html) I'm going, bringing my neys of course.

I'm also bringing some pseudo-starter-neys. Basically it seems whenever I go somewhere, someone asks me how do you get a sound, and they try mine, and I try to show them..but this is usually not a thing one can achieve in 5 or 10 minutes.

So I cut up a narrow pvc tube into random reasonably sized chunks, and I'm planning to carry a couple around with me . The idea being if someone is interested but isn't sure they want to buy one because they aren't able to get a sound yet, I'll give them one of these tubes to fiddle with. So then they can try it out and when/if they get a sound, go buy the real deal. It won't be exactly the same, but ought to be a good start.

So if you are going and see me,and interested, let me know.

Maori Ney-like flutes in New Zealand

Hi All
I thought that some people might be interested in this website. http://www.inza.co.nz/RN_home.html It shows a number of Maori flutes that are blown by mouth or nose in a very ney-like way.The straight ones are called Koauau and are mouth blown and the bent ones are Nguru and can be blown by mouth or nose. They are made of wood ,bone ,stone or clay .They have a very small range of only 4 notes but are capable of very very haunting music. The short length and large bore enable the notes to be bent by up to a semitone.

Cheers
I'm also bringing pseudo-starter-neys. Basically it seems whenever I go somewhere, someone asks me how do you get a sound, and they try mine, and I try to show them..but this is usually not a thing one can achieve in 5 or 10 minutes.

So I cut up a narrow pvc tube into reasonably sized chunks, and I'm planning to carry a couple around with me . The idea being if someone is interested but isn't sure they want to buy one because they aren't able to get a sound yet, I'll give them one of these tubes to fiddle with. So then they can try it out and when/if they get a sound, go buy the real deal.

So if you are going and see me,and interested, let me know.

Some beginner suggestions

Hi neyzen, I was looking at the board and thought that I would make a few suggestions from the perspective of an American that has played various types of ney for over 20 years.

First, if you want to play "ney", do you mean the oldest form, the Arabic nay (nai), the Turkish version of the ney, or the Persian ney?
All three are somewhat different things.

The Arabic instrument dates back at least to 1500-2000BC, is bilabially blown, and has no mouthpiece but just a sharpened end of the cane to blow. Although an urban classical instrument, it has strong pastoral connotations and is played with a lot of verve, with many trills, turns, and other expressive ornaments.

Somewhere after the 13th century the Turkish ney players began using a small mouthpiece called a bas, pare, and the instrument became the primary instrument of the Mevlevi order. Thus in Turkey the ney has spiritual connotations, the pastoral being left to the various kaval flutes.

In the late 18th and 19th century in Iran ney players adopted the Turkmen interdental blowing method and play a whole other form of ney, with fewer nodes and holes. This method is a unique path among ney players (and is my weakest area of ney playing!).

So first decide which type of ney with which you want to begin. then select the best key for your uses, taking into account hand size, and trying to avoid extremes of size as the largest and smallest neys have additional difficulties that the beginner does not need to deal with.

For Arabic music is suggest a nai al dugah, or a D ney. A nai al nawa or G ney would be a good choice too - I've played all night with bands on those two sizes. A C or A would also be useful if you play with a lot of different groups.

For Turkish music the most common size seems to be the Kiz ney, or ney in B. However I have heard many recordings on a D ney (superde), and lots of the instruments tune to a Bolahenk ney, ney in E.
Also the Mansur ney, in A, is common and it reads the Turkish notation at concert pitch. All sizes are available, but a typical neyzen can transpose so even if I have a B ney and the group plays off of E I can do so on the B ney.

I'm going to leave it to the experts on Persian ney to make any comments !

Always check any ney for tuning by making sure that the lowest note of the 3rd register is the same as the note with only the thumbhole closed in the second register, and likewise for the lowest note of the 4th register and the note in the 3rd register with the thumb and two fingers closed.

If the ney is in tune with itself then check the tuining. Ney are named for the note made with the lowest hole open, not with all closed. So if a ney plays C with all closed and D with one open hole, it is in D.

Ideally you want one with a nice big diameter so you can get a bigger tone in the low register, and one that plays the extra high notes above the 4th register.

Ney miking

Hi all,
Any suggestions for miking a ney? I do just fine with the mike-on-a-stand setup, but sometimes I need to use something more moveable or less obvious. I have a clip on lapel mike with a battery pack, but can't seem to get it aimed right to really pick up the sound. Any suggestions?

Hi! I'm a Boehm system flute player of about 18 years and I'm just starting to mess with the ney. Because of this, I have some silly questions.

1. I have one ney that is played transversely and one that is end blown. Will fingerings be different for these? (They both have 6 finger holes...one has an extra hole where no finger could possibly go)). Is this other thing even a ney?

2. I'm finding fingering charts for neys with 7 holes...this one only has 6?? Anything that can shed light on where I can find fingerings for this ney?

Thanks!

Hello everyone ! I'm a newbie to this group, and I live in the U.K. I've just started to get an interest in this instrument - my lady friend's into tribal bellydancing, and I've always been more of a woodwind player than percussion. Anyway, I'm interested in learning to play this instrument, but I live about 300 miles from London in the north - east of England, so there's no chance I can drop on down for any workshops or anything, but I'd still like to know what sort of instrument I should buy to start me off. I'm aware that there are 7 in the full range of instruments and that these may be purchased via eBay etc., but you can't tell how good something sounds just by looking at it over the net ! All help and suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

So who out there already plays ney? Do you play professionally? How did you get started?

I have been playing on and off and casually maybe about 3 years now. I can play a number of songs but am still basically a beginner. I need a lot of work on sounding more Arabic, and working on other maqams and..well all sorts of stuff. I am thinking of going to a music camp in Wisconsin where Scott Marcus is teaching all week. Has anyone studied with him?

Hi there,

you maybe interested in this workshop in London

Ney (Reed Flute) Workshops
with Muniser Unver
An unique opportunity to learn this ancient Sufi instrument

Eight Week Workshop Starting Sun 4 of June 12-2 pm at St Marks Church in Angel

http://www.caravansary.org/workshops/

Neys will be available for sale in the workshop

Listen Muniser playing the Ney

The ney, one of the oldest types of flute, is found across the Middle East, but is traditionally a male instrument. Unver explains: "They told me that it was a difficult instrument for women to play because their chests weren't big enough, but I said 'Well, I want to play it!'". Unver was already hooked on performance and music from her first recording for Ankara Radio at the age of seven, and so attended the Ankara State Conservatoire studying piano, she studied classical Turkish and Mevlevi music under private tuition.

"When I perform I love it! I feel that I'm not old, but I'm young and flying!" says the defiantly sprightly ney player and teacher Munise Unver. Sixty-three years old and extremely proud of it, Unver was brought up in Ankara and Istanbul in a musical family. "My father was a musician, and musicians were always coming and practising in our house."

Unver came to the UK in 1968 because two of her English students decided that they wanted to continue their classes in the UK, and asked Unver what they should do. "We have an expression, 'Whether you stay here, or whether you take me there it makes no difference, but I was joking, and they took me seriously!" Planning only to stay six months, and then only a year, Unver married and has lived in London ever since.

Although she has mostly concentrated on teaching "because I don't want to take what I know with me" Unver hs also performed with a number of bands, and currently plays with the Nihavend Ensemble. Laughing about the youth of the rest of the group she comments "I am easily the oldest - I can go to the British Museum you know!" Ultimately, Unver cannot imagine giving up music because "I think music gives you life - it' s as important as water."

Helpful for getting a sound..try a mirror.

There is something some of you might find helpful. I've found a lot of times when I'm here or there with the ney, people will come up to me and inevitably ask me how to play it and want to try it. And 99/100 times, of course, they struggle.

Well this summer a friend of mine decided one way or another he wanted to learn the ney and he was *going* to get a sound if he passed out trying. So I lent him an tourist-quality pvc ney from Turkey to play with till he could get note. For days he'd try and try and try and try.., getting light headed while doing so. But nothing.

Then I got the idea...ahah...and the two of us stood next to each other in front of a mirror while he watched what I was doing and next thing you know..TOOOOOOT.

And we both jumped about excitedly. It was great!
HA!!!!! THESE DAMN STICKS MADE NOISE!!!!!!!

HA!!!!!! MUWAHAHA!!!!! MMMMMMMMUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

I will not be defeated by these things!!!!! I made noise!!!!!!!!

Although I'm not 100% sure that what I'm making is an actual Ney tone, or a harmonic 'whistle' that coincidentally changes pitch with fingering changes. I can get it to jump registers by altering the position of my palette, so I am as yet suspicious......

It started out with not much of a tone, then I could get a few notes, then I committed what I am sure is Ney Sacrelige by tooting out 'amazing grace' and 'wild rover'..... nothing quite like using a traditional middle eastern instrument to play traditional irish pub songs.... :O

And what made the difference between me getting notes, as opposed to just empty 'wind with pitch'????

OIL.

Ah Zahira, you were so right.....A dry Ney is a BROKEN Ney....
