I'm among the very few who HATE, HATE and HATE new years!! Therefore, I DO NOT want people to wish me a happy new year. People do that every year as if it'll change things. But as history has shown, nothing changes on new years day! And I don't care if I'm taking that U2 song out of context!

Re: Crap, crap, crappy new year!
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 10:36 AMyul,
i think you're missing the point of celebrating the coming of the new year--we mark the passage of time with rituals as humans. also, it's not so much that a new year will change one's life, but there is the CAPACITY for change. it's just like a new day, just a longer period of time.
maybe you should come to spain for a short while and get into the spirit of celebration -- not of the new year (it's a little late for that now) but of ANYTHING.. one of the things i admire about the culture here is that they take any opportunity to celebrate, there are so many holidays here that people often don't even know what it is that they are commemorating...
there is a japanese saying that my wife has on our refrigerator that we both love: "we're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance." -

Re: Crap, crap, crappy new year!
Mon, January 19, 2009 - 7:03 AMNo! I still think news years is crappiest! Besides, I'm too busy trying to make money than to waste time celebrating. Maybe after I become rich will I then consider celebrating new years or any other such crappiness.

Re: Crap, crap, crappy new year!
Mon, January 19, 2009 - 7:06 AMAnd celebrating new years IS NOT MADATORY! You might have to establish a totolitarian dictatorship to compell me to celebrate that new years mess.

Re: Crap, crap, crappy new year!
Mon, January 19, 2009 - 3:21 PMDicatorship? I could get into that.
-
Re: Crap, crap, crappy new year!
Tue, January 20, 2009 - 6:23 PMcelebration of ANYTHING is never mandatory -- excepting that bit about dictatorship -- but it is recommended.
celebration can take many forms. this is just an example, not me harping about NYE:
1. i dj'ed with friends at a bar that other friends attended
2. my wife had 2 friends over and they did a quiet meditation
3. my mom hung out with my dad at home.

Re: Crap, crap, crappy new year!
Wed, January 21, 2009 - 8:34 AMAnyway, it is better to focus your mind on making money then to try to find any actual happiness. We all know that only rich people are happy and that rich people are also never sad.
In that context, celebrating is worthless, unless you celebrate sleeping on a bed of cash. Birthdays? Pffft. Weddings? As if.
MONEY! -

if you don't get money for those occassions you're messing up, dude! getting married was one of the best things for our bank balance! :D ok, maybe only for the first month or so... i love how people just GIVE you things merely because you're a year older or deciding to get hitched!

Re: Crap, crap, crappy new year!
Wed, January 28, 2009 - 10:33 PMI work for various rich people, and some are wealthy because they are so screwed up. I read that CEO's of large companies need massive therapy because they live in fear of folks finding out how little they actually know. They lead lives of quiet desperation. The wealthy that are happy are so because they not only have security, but also perspective.
