I joined this tribe some time last year, but I don't remember if I ever made a post introducing myself, so I'll do it now!
Hi everybody, my name is YamĂȘ. I'm 21 and I started bellydancing only a year ago, but I've been in love ever since. I haven't been taking lessons this whole time (though I never stopped practicing on my own), but in January I found an instructor I'm happy with. The classes are egyptian style, but I'm very into both egyptian and tribal. I've never performed yet, but I hope to perform with my class this summer.
The reason I'm posting this is because I don't really know anyone near me who bellydances! There are the people from my class, but since I just got moved up to this class recently I'm only starting to get to know them. So, I was wondering if I could establish some contacts with other people who bellydance, but especially other dancers near me (in or near Monmouth County, NJ). So, anybody here from my area?
And, if not... well, I'd still like to hear about who you are, your experiences, and any tips you'd like to give! Thanks <3

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 11:58 AMhey welcome welcome...
I am kind of new here myself... moved late august from the tribal mecca in california... huge downer but when you gotta go you gotta go. We have some fabulous dancers here! Anne Maria is totally awesome she is from Fringe Benifit ( if memory serves me correct) she is my hero.... Alexia teaches at the Drum and Dance Center... she is like my double hero... and she will probably kill me to because I'm totally OCD about her classes and tormenting her with questions. I'm such an ass. =) but I love her class, she is an excellant teacher. Way cool people around... totally!
We have a very very cool event in Flemmington that Ann dragged us to... fabulous time... I think the next go around is the 27th. You should definitly try to come!
As far as any dancers in Monmouth county... I can't help you... I only know one person from there and she doesn't dance... she drives all the way down to Vineland for this crappy job. But she is fun and we love her anyway! =)
um that's that. Oh yeah.. tempest is down here way way way at the end of the state in cape may... and well.. she's the shit so that is all there is to say about that.
Oh yeah gotta finish working so I can get the heck out of dodge and go home! to much tribe... not enough work. =)

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 12:16 PMWelcome to Tribe Yame.. First let me start off by saying your are sooo pretty. You have a very unique look. Your going to turn some heads in the Bellydance world. The summer will be hear before you know it, thats when all the fun begins for us. For those of us that dance professionally it's a very busy season as far as work. But you'll find that Tribe will post that we post alot of events like Drum Circles, and outings for Dancers and Musicians to get together and meet. I live in Hudson County, but if your ever in the area please let me know.

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 12:50 PMHi Yame, welcome to Tribe!
Down in your area, I think there is Ashtar and the Daughters of Sophia:
daughtersofsophia.com/
Ashtar is in Ocean County in Brick: www.tribaldancearts.com/index.html
If you are on that side of Monmouth County (rather than on the Mercer County side toward Imlaystown or Allentown Borough), you definitely should look them up!
If you are more toward Mercer County, though, and can get to Route 130 South easily from the Allentown area, or hop on 295 West, you're not so far away from the Drum and Dance Learning Center and all of the shenanigans they are up to.
The Hunterdon County event Basha is referring to is one held by the local Society for Creative Anachronism group, the Barony of Settmour Swamp. It's open to non-SCA members, though, and it is a lot of fun on a Sunday afternoon. I plan to be attending the next one as well!

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 1:26 PMThanks for the swift replies!
It's so weird that there seem to be so many bellydancers in NJ, but so few in my area. I mean, I never knew NJ was so... big! O.o
Thanks for the compliments Jamillah. I can't wait til summer, then! I hope I can start getting to know some people... even though this seems to be a really welcoming environment it's kind of scary walking into a place without knowing anyone! I went to the Rakkasah East last year and a Hafla, and both times I dragged my husband with me because I had no one else to bring.
Christiane, I actually started at Tribal Dance Arts. I took lessons there for about 5 months last year. But once the summer was over I had to stop because the place was like a half-hour drive, and with my student+work schedule that wasn't working out anymore. So I had no place to go until I moved and found a studio very close to my house, which is the one I go to now. I really like it, everybody there is pretty nice, but I see them once a week for just an hour and I'm the kind of person that wants to bellydance and watch bellydance and talk about bellydance aaaaalll the time! So I end up annoying my friends who don't really care so much about bellydance, and feeling "lacking" because I don't have enough of an outlet for my passion.

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 2:01 PMWell, feel free to friend me here, and definitely see if you can attend the Mahira Tribe event May 3 in Vineland; and then there's the Hipnosis Belly Jam in Pa. on April 12. I see most of my bellydance friends at bellydance events! -

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 2:07 PMoh oh oh... there be things in Vineland... see look I didn't know that. I have to drag my sorry a$$ down there every day from Mt Laurel as I must help the US economy (score to the tyrant that is Wal-Mart).... I will still be down there in May. Cool.
As far as not knowing anyone! Ha ha ha ha... that's how it was at the SCA event in flemmington... I walked all up in there like afly on the wall b/c I didn't know anyone! Met Ann on tribe and made a run for it to get to know some peeps! I hear the Belly jam thing is supposed to be good...I am trying to make it over there as well to meet some new people!
They are there... more than you think!
(and you are beautiful... hope you make it to the flemmington thing so you can dance with us!) -

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 2:14 PMYeah, as far as the Vineland event, the Mahira Tribe gals kick ass! Amy and Suzanne were at the Flemington event, and Suzanne's husband Sean was playing saz with Carmine.
And the Belly Jam is just amazing. I can't believe how much it's grown over the years; from the small (very small) group that met at the Grist Mill in Yardley to the huge event that the last one was. It's really amazing and a testament to how hard Hipnosis has worked to keep this event going. -

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 4:01 PMHi Yame!
Welcome!!! We have a really fun group here.
There is actually another troupe of ladies down in your area called the Belly Stars. I believe ( and I should just check my web site) their director, Mirimah, teaches in Lindcroft. I have them listed if you want more info. Ashtar is an old friend who I met at a wedding of a mutual friend...so we go back a bit.
OMgoodness...I remember the old Hipnosis haflas where there was all of about 20 or 30 people over at the Yardley facility. Next one I went to...I thought the floors were going to cave in because the place was filled to max capacity. ( Have I told you how awesome that picture is Christiane?)
Don't forget to come to Spring Caravan in June where you will get a chance to meet alot of the people from tribe. Maybe Cerisa and I will make up little buttons and have NJer's wear them. 'Hey..you from Joisey...I'm from Joisey" ...just teasing! Piscopo is actually a resident in my town...believe it or not. Oh...Yame...you might not be old enough for that joke. ;)
And...we are in the midst of planning NJ Belly Dancing's second annual get together. We expect everyone to come and have lots of fun!

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 3:45 PMHello Yame!
We are a diverse state of belly dancers from the North, Central and South, but we all share a love of Middle Eastern Dance! Consider us all your friends and resources!
You'll find that many of us travel to attend events, like Rakkasah East, or to NYC for special shows, many ladies travel to attend my classes and workshops, I meander around the state to teach and perform at events and in restaurants and at shows all over NY & NJ.
So...when you do travel 'north'...introduce yourself...or...when you see one of us at Rakkasah, be sure to say hi!!!

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 2:03 PMHey Yame,
I remember you from Ashtar's class. I stopped going after a while because of my schedule amongst other things. I moved to Monmouth County and I too am taking Egyptian style classes. Do you go to Zarouhi in Long Branch/Middletown?
Well anyway, I live in the area so you can always PM me. Take care ; ) -

Re: Introducing myself

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 1, 2008 - 4:13 PMThat looks like a lot of stuff going on in NJ! I think I'm overwhelmed! haha
I'm gonna look into everything, definitely during the summer I should be able to make it to a lot of different events. -
-
Re: Introducing myself
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 8:30 AMYes there is a lot going on in our "small" state. I was overwhelmed once I started looking at how much was being offered. And I find it well worth my while to travel to get the best you can.

Re: Introducing myself
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 8:40 PMHi Yame,
Hi, I'm Davinder and I remember you from Ashtar's classes as well. I had to stop as well due to financial reasons. Currently, I take informal bellydance lessons here and there. Right now I've been into Flamenco. I'm glad to see that you're enjoying current classes.
Take care and have fun. -

Re: Introducing myself
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 3:05 PMGreetings Yame.
There are many great dancers and teachers in NJ and
in the surroudning areas that I would recommend to you.
I will write more of a longer list with other websites I
can find later. Some dancers have more than one site.
Do you want any in Pennsylvania or just NJ?
But here is what I have at the moment off the top
of my head:
In the Northern part of the state and into
the Big Apple in NYC, we have the great Gia.
I admire her work so much.
www.idreamofgia.com
Up North, you may also contact Chadia
www.gypsycaravanenterprises.com
In the central part, there is Alexia with DDLC.
She also does a lot of things that aren't Arabian
too like multicultural things for African
dancing and drumming.
www.alexiadance.com
There is also Mihrimah
www.myspace.com/mihrimahbellydancer
Also, there is the pretty Zarouhi who is Armenian
and is also a great dancer
She can be found here www.zarouhidance.com
In the southern part of the state down the shore, we have
a world reknown gem in Margate (near AC), the terrific Soraya
who is Arabian descent. She is one of my BD inspirations.
She's really sweet and owns an entertainment company too.
www.bellydancebysoraya.com
In the extreme south, there is a Greek dancer
named Athena that teaches in the Cape May region.
I have heard great things about her.
athenegenie.fortunecity.com
Hope this helps you out Yame!

Thu, May 8, 2008 - 8:32 PMI'm currently taking classes with Zarouhi. She's a great teacher.
It's nice to know who else is around me, though. Thank you!

Re: Introducing myself
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 8:30 PMOhh Flamenco, that's awesome! How unfortunate, it seems a lot of people from when we were there stopped going. I want to go back sometimes, but I will be starting salsa with Max, so that coupled with my current bellydance classes, I just can't afford something else.
I hope you keep practicing, and hopefully I'll see you around at an event (maybe Rakkasah?) one of these days.
