Hey Kids,
Some of you may have noticed that I've been silent on tribe.com and myspace.com and No Alternative has not played recently. I have remained silent about my personal health because I am a private man. However, it is not fair to those people who I have had to put projects off with to simply say I've been ill. Therefore, I am choosing today to announce that at the beginning of the year I was diagnosed with cancer.
The type of cancer I was diagnosed with gives a 20 to 40 percent survival rate. While I have full insurance, the medical bills to date would have been close to a half million dollars, I am still in the poor house. There is good news to this story, so read on.
I have had to go through two months of radiation and chemotherapy which, until recently, has left me barely able to walk. The cancer was in the head and neck so radiation to the throat has been extremely painful. I was able to finish recording the Jah Genocide Dub/Reggae CD prior to becoming too weak to do anything that required moving from the bed or couch.
Last Tuesday, I beat the odds and was given a semi clean bill of health. The primary tumor, which was the size of a softball, has shrunk down to nothing. Even though radiation has stopped, the tumor area still gets smaller. I am on the road to recovery.
While we have had to cancel shows and recording time at Sun Studios, we will be back in full force by years end. I decided not to tell anyone, other than immediately family, because there was nothing anyone could do, other than worry.
These days, you can find me on Chess.com spending my days with the rest of the chess slackers and devotees to the game. I managed to save my sanity by playing chess for up to four hours daily through this great website. In case you didn't know, I am an avid chess player, actually a bit of a fanatic.
So I leave you with the news that the storm has passed and I'll be back to playing shows soon. I afraid I am going to have to organize a benefit for myself to try and deal with the debt Jennifer and I have built up, since I've been unable to work. I'll keep you posted. On a side note of good news, I managed not to loose my hair which is a miracle of modern medicine. I decided that I would survive this from the get go and all that positive thinking worked. Thanks for reading this.
Johnny

Jesus fuck man that is some heavy news. You have triumphed over many things in the past --(you probably know of what I speak) and you will survive this.
It is weird to simultaneously be a private person and have a somewhat public life. I went through an intense period of depression in which I took a five + month leave of absence from work a few years back. Treatment included ECT, which helped bring me back. Confidential medical and all that, but I exist in a somewhat public sphere and my private illness (naturally) became more or less common knowledge in the community in which I operate.
Ultimately, I recieved a lot of support from people at the acquantance level, as well as from friends and family. This was and is valuable to me at a very deep level. At the same time it is sort of invasive that I exist in the consciousness of others at all, if ya know what I mean.
IF there is anything I can do, you got it.
Stay well.

Re: Diagnosed With Cancer
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 9:42 PMI love this man more than anything and I feel so helpless with him hurting so bad.... It breaks my heart,,,,,,
good news is after a couple months of very painful chemotherapy and radiation, the tumor is almost gone and he should recover from this.
Thank goodness I have my businesswoman job and was able to put him on my insurance but there are some things that weren't covered and we're going to have to do some "creative financing". Most of you know I am a photographer... I will be setting up an ebay auction some time in the next few weeks and will be putting up some of my framed images as well as a bunch of other random stuff. If any of you have anything at all you would like to donate for the auction please contact either Hugh or myself and we will make arrangements... I will keep you all posted here when it goes up.
I am very sorry, my friends, my family, I know you've been worried, not knowing what was going on with us but now that it's out in the open, I promise to keep you up to date.... -

Re: Diagnosed With Cancer
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 7:20 AMI'm not heroic, I'm just a guy who got dealt a bad hand in the card game of life. The big different, I played my bad hand into a winning hand. It's not that hard when faced with the alternative. However, I would not have made it through this without Jennifer. I also have to mention that playing chess also factored into my recovery. I will have more posted about the chess angle on my blogspace:
theartofchess.blogspot.com/
It's a written project I a working on that describes this ordeal, life in general, and how chess factors into all of this. Stay tuned, -

Re: Diagnosed With Cancer
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 7:04 PMShit, everywhere I turn there is cancer, family, friends, neighbors, People I work with, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason why some make it and some do not. I do not really know you but all my best wishes go out to you. Like I said before I think I only saw once in 79 or so at the Mab, but a great show and hope to see you play again. Being a teacher it makes it hard on a week night. But also being a chess player off and on for years, not good just a wood pusher I am glad how that has help you. A few years ago I made a series of chess paintings. None good enough to sell but they were up in a few coffee shops and were even censored and taken down in Sacramento. I am a banned artist. They are a cross between early tattoo art and folk arrt ( a drunk Jerry Sailor) if you want I could send you a couple of j pegs. I have one that is not done so if you have a favorite game or opening or saying in chess I could finish the painting for you . I have not worked on them in years because of time with family and work. Let me know if you are interested Jeff -
