Hey Kids,

We're gearing up for the next few months. We're busy practicing new songs and getting ready to do some recording. I also have been working on sound track projects. Greg and I have doing some old school rockabilly (who knows, I might even cut my hair) so don't be surprised if you see us playing as the Swinging Possums. More news to come!.......JG

Hey Kids,

Jennifer and I got our Christmas present early this year: As of ten days ago I had two major scans done of my head and neck: The results came back last Friday: I am officially in remission and CANCER FREE. While I will always have to have scans done on a tri-yearly basis, my body is currently not harboring any mutated cells.

I didn't realize how much stress I was under living with cancer until I got the good news. After leaving the doctor's office, I felt exhausted, as if I hadn't slept for a month. I literally slept through the weekend, walking around in a complete and utter daze. This is the one gift I could only dream about and still can't believe I've been given.

Since I have a clean bill of health, No Alternative is going to start playing shows again in the New Year. I am also gearing up to apply for further research grants regarding my beloved chemistry projects, so I have my nose in advanced chemistry and mathematics books on a daily basis in an effort to get my fuel cell research on step closer to being an alternative to the energy sources that are out there. It has been my life's work (at least these last six years) to leave the planet a better place than when I entered it and this is how I'm going to do it. My research group, Rogue Chemist Laboratories should have their website up soon so you can see what I'm up to. Jennifer and I will keep you posted. Ignore any typos in this post because I didn't get to sleep until 4:00 AM and I just got back up at 10:00. Thank you again for all of your support through this ordeal.

Johnny

Benefit Thanks

Hey Kids,

It's Sunday afternoon and Jennifer and I just got up. The benefit last night was a success beyond our wildest dreams. I want to thank all of you who came and showed your support. I also want to thank all of you who donated your time as well. I have lost my voice since No Alternative ended up doing five songs so communication will have to be via email for the next few days. We raised a large amount of money that will cover the current medical bills. One of the highlights of the evening was having the Mutants play. Of course, since they are my all time favorite band, I was at the front of the stage (acting as sound person) bopping around. Rozz from Negative Trend also got up and did a set of Negative Trend songs (my other favorite band) which was a real treat! I'll be in touch with all of you during the next week to thank you personally for your help. Thanks again, I feel loved!

Johnny

Diagnosed With Cancer

Hey Kids,

Some of you may have noticed that I've been silent on tribe.com and myspace.com and No Alternative has not played recently. I have remained silent about my personal health because I am a private man. However, it is not fair to those people who I have had to put projects off with to simply say I've been ill. Therefore, I am choosing today to announce that at the beginning of the year I was diagnosed with cancer.

The type of cancer I was diagnosed with gives a 20 to 40 percent survival rate. While I have full insurance, the medical bills to date would have been close to a half million dollars, I am still in the poor house. There is good news to this story, so read on.

I have had to go through two months of radiation and chemotherapy which, until recently, has left me barely able to walk. The cancer was in the head and neck so radiation to the throat has been extremely painful. I was able to finish recording the Jah Genocide Dub/Reggae CD prior to becoming too weak to do anything that required moving from the bed or couch.

Last Tuesday, I beat the odds and was given a semi clean bill of health. The primary tumor, which was the size of a softball, has shrunk down to nothing. Even though radiation has stopped, the tumor area still gets smaller. I am on the road to recovery.

While we have had to cancel shows and recording time at Sun Studios, we will be back in full force by years end. I decided not to tell anyone, other than immediately family, because there was nothing anyone could do, other than worry.

These days, you can find me on Chess.com spending my days with the rest of the chess slackers and devotees to the game. I managed to save my sanity by playing chess for up to four hours daily through this great website. In case you didn't know, I am an avid chess player, actually a bit of a fanatic.

So I leave you with the news that the storm has passed and I'll be back to playing shows soon. I afraid I am going to have to organize a benefit for myself to try and deal with the debt Jennifer and I have built up, since I've been unable to work. I'll keep you posted. On a side note of good news, I managed not to loose my hair which is a miracle of modern medicine. I decided that I would survive this from the get go and all that positive thinking worked. Thanks for reading this.

Johnny

Hey Kids,

I'm in the studio and looking for suggestions for songs you would like to hear in a Dub style. The stranger the request the better. Anything will be considered and I need them asap to make my deadline. You'll get credit on the CD. Let's have some input here. I feel like I'm writing posts to myself. My music is a community based project and you are part of it. Please help me with this project and be part of the shaping force of my new Dub/Reggae CD. You got the power man!

Hey Kids,

I've been working in the studio the last four days and have, believe it or not, been work on a Dub CD. That's right kids, a new project. We'll have songs from the CD up over the next few days on the Johnny Genocide myspace music page. I'm hoping to have the ten songs ready to put out on our own record label, Squirrel Hound Records (owned and founded by Jennifer Genocide, my lovely wife) by November. The music is really cool and very different, a departure from old school punk. If you folks have any favorite old school Dub songs let me know and I'll recording them a shot. You'll get credit on the CD! Bacl to recording....

Hey Hipsters,

I just posted the first track from my upcoming Dub/Reggae CD: Jah Genocide, Tales from The Dance Hall. Give it a listen. I guarantee you, it's like nothing you've ever heard from me. I'm playing all of the instruments. The CD will have full versions of the songs and Dub versions (no vocals for you not in the know about old school Dub). The song title is "Company Man" and will be released on Squirrel Hound Records at the end of the year. There will be four more tracks posted within the next two weeks. An advanced sampler will be available at no cost for those of you that write in requesting the CD. The only cost will be for postage which will vary depending on where you live. Give it a listen and tell me what you think. It's a new world of music for me and I've written all of the material with the exception of Police and Thieves and 624803 (The Offs whom I used to play with). Enjoy!

Hey Kids,

Let's welcome the newest member of the No Alternative Tribe, Iris, to the fold. Feel free to chime in with any witty banter or heartfelt welcomes to Iris. Just so you know what this tribe is about:

Tts a collection of old (and new) school punk rockers who signed on to support our washed up and spent heroes, the guys in No Alternative (yeah). The rules of the tribe are simple; there are no rules. As an introduction, let me tell you a biut about me Iris:

I played in No Alternative banto other "nerdy" puck in the old days when you made 45 rpm records out of dinosaur biproducts. I stoppped playing for a brief period when I took up the profession of teaching chemistry. When it looked like I'd have a career of money and respect, I went back to playing guitar with No Alternative and a few other bands. Yes, at 46 years of age, I'm a slacker guitar player who still plays video games and watches Star Wars over and over. I am the most nerdy, uncool man on the face of the planet. My Wife (who I simply love and adore) moderates this tribe and runs the day to day business of the band, leaving me even more time to sit around playing video games. Just kidding. I have a small recording studio in my house where I constantly record stuff for my latest solo projects.

We like stories about your experience with punk rock; bands you've seen, people you dated (especially good gossip), etc. Feel free to share stuff with us. In fact, we expect to hear soemthing from you no that we've written you this nice hello and howdy note. Come on Iris, tell us a story. Did I mention I am stark raving mad?

Johnny

Hey Kids,

So I mentioned that I was doing an old school country album. Well, the first song got cut and it sounds great. We got a real 1960s Nashville sound to it. It is also the first professional project done at our home studio. I'll be posting it on my myspace page sometime next week. We're on a schedule of three finished songs per week, with roughly 13 songs for the final production. It's gone fairly smoothly, with the exception of a few programming glitchs due to my insane requirement of precise production. I'm shooting for a George Jones, Waylon Jennings sound. This is the first time I have played all of the instruments: guitars, bass, slide guitar, pedal steel, keyboards, etc. It's Saturday night and Jennifer and I are taking a well needed break from it all. I am having to deal with an illness so I am spending my time in the studio these days(our live schedule is up in the air). I will attempt to finish two to three CDs this year. Having a studio in your house makes it very easy. Jennifer (my wife) is a big part of getting this all done and assisting in the final production, coproducing all my music.

On a funny note, I had just finished laying down the pedal steel tracks and had them tracked perfectly. However, I couldn't get the delay I wanted through the effects board. Our dog, "Little Girl" (who is also about 80 pounds) jammed her nose into the computer keyboard and offset the pedal steel track by a few milliseconds. It created a perfect off time delay. The dog will get credit on the CD as assistant engineer.

Hey Hipsters,

Anyone go to DirkFest? I'm compiling information for a written piece and want to hear your stories about the evening. According to our friends in the press we played a great set. I tend to to analyze our sets because I'm too critical. I was nice to see many people from the old days there. However, it was too crazy to get a chance to really talk to anyone for an extended period of time. Our original bass player Jeff Reese was there to play half of the set. The always amazing Chip Kinman also played with us, doing some Dils classics. Chip and his wife Lisa stayed with us for the weekend and it was a real treat to spend time with someone I looked up to as a kid. Chip is the world's nicest guy (so is Lisa). I look forward to seeing them on Friday when we play the Scen Bar in Los Angeles. OK kids tell me some stories!

Best Song writers: Punk Bands From 1976-82

Hey kids,

I thought I'd once again post something of a public poll regarding great song writing from early punk bands> Here's my list and a brief why they're on it:

1. X: What can I say. John and Exene wrote brilliant lyrics with the added plus of Billy Zoom's interpretation and rockabilly/rock playing style.

2. The Mutants (SF): They wrote some of the most interesting music from that period. There songs sounded nothing like what the rest of us were doing. They had a writing style that was/is completely unique.

3. The Clash: They took basic punk rock and went in many directions including dub, pop, etc. Strummer's lyrics being political and Jone's guitar writing covering 30 years of musicical styles.

4. The Offs: While I did play with the Offs (briefly), they were the first of us locals to infuse the styles of the Wailers and a bit of motown.

5. The Dead Kennedy's: East Bay Ray's echoplex surf sound mixed with Jello's politics made for a unique sound

6. The Avenegers: While more twoards traditional punk, they had a sound that was their own.

7. The Weirdos: Who knew that art school students could rock so hard.

Feel free to add your two cents worth into this mix. I am currently working on a book about the scene and growing up in it and would appreciate your comments regarding bands during the heyday of punk here in SF. Thanks....

Johnny

I am finally getting my old school country and blues projects off the ground and want to get into the studio to record by years end. I am looking for punk musicians who love George Jones, Johnny Cash, Old Rockabilly, Robert Johnson etc. I have a few people interestedand here's your chance to get involved. I need a few more to complete the studio line up. I am planning on getting this project into the studio by year's end. If you know anyone let me know......Johnny

Hey Kids,

I thought I'd change the topic away from No Alternative. I think we should also use this tribe for non NA topics. What really got me into playing was the early bands I saw at the Mab. Some of the bands that really left a mark on me were DOA, Negative Trend, The Dils, The Avengers and the Sleepers. How about you?

Back then, none of us (with the exception of Greg Ingraham and a few others) could play their instruments. We were raw, but full of energy. It was a do it yourself movement and we did it ourselves. We had shitty equipment but did our best. I can remember guys like Cip from the Dils showing me how to put strings on my guitar the right way. I once sat around with Jimmy Wilsey playing guitar. He showed me a bunch of really cool guitar licks. One of them was gauranteed to get the ladies! We had parties where we sat around and put together 45s for bands. I did some art work for the original Negative Trend 45.

There we also cliques: You had the Art Institute crowd who were there from the beginning. You had the Marxist group, the druggie groups, the rockabilly groups, to mention a few. Remember the house parties and rent parties? Let's here a few stories from you kids! Now I sit in middle age, doing the same things I did back then. However, now I bitch about my equipment if its not first rate and run the bands business from my laptop. Remember when you had to go out all night and wheat paste flyers on to telephone poles?

Hey Kids,

Since many people have been asking us where to get out of print No Alternative recordings, we're now offering this service on myspace. We monitor the sale of out of print recordings by the band. When we see band music go on sale on ebay, we'll post a bulletin regarding the item, including the link. Last night we found the rare SF Underground compilation for $10.05 on ebay. This is a bargin. Let us know if your looking for any other old school music. Greg, our drummer came up with this idea (I'm too much of a capitalist and want the money for myself) and is a big record collector. He can find anything, anywhere. We'll keep you posted and don't forget to let us know if you're looking for anything rare or out of print. We'll help you find it (even if its someone else's band).

Johnny

Hey Kids,

I just finished remastering some rare No Alternative music (Rockabilly Rumble, Boy With A Needle, Damned To Hell, and Working Class Boy) and have made it available for downloading on my new myspace page. This new page serves as a clearing house for all my current and past musical projects. New Material will be made available from this site for download (with no cost for downloads). It's simple, go on check out the music, and within a week there will be a mirror site to download music, posters, etc. Just type in Johnny Genocide on the music search page and check out the site. There is one other Johnny Genocide who is a rapper. There is also a Johnny Genocide who is the guitarist/singer of a Christian Rock Band. We all know which one I am!

Johnny

Hey kids,

ItsI'm early in the morning and I haven't slept yet. We're playing tonight at the Elbo Room. The opening bands are all great so show up and support them. As you know we're flying to Memphis in August and recording at the legendary Sun Studios. If there are any old school country/rockabilly songs you want us to record, let us know. You'll get credit in the liner notes. We aiming at a mini tour of Europe at the end of the year and will keep you posted regarding that. The Live No Alternative CD should be out by years end as well. We're busy working on the new songs for the next studio CD. Even June Carter Genocide (my beloved wife) is getting in on the act. We all know what a big flake I'd be without her. If you see me at the gig tonight come up and say howdy. After all, if your on our myspace page you're part of our extended family.

Hey Gang,

If you get a chance, check out the Naked Lady Wrestlers. These guys are pure genius. Max Volume is one of the greatest guitars period. They used to play the Mabuhay Gardens and had such great songs as Chinese People On Acid. They played with us Saturday night at Annies Social Club and were better than ever. Learn from them!

Hey Hipsters,

It's been a while since I posted anything due to being really busy with the band. No Alternative finished the last show for the year last night at Annie's Social club last night. Also on the bill were the Naked Lady Wrestlers and the Lewd. It was a great show. I'm playing in a band called Blind Orange Genocide with Greg Ingraham from the Avengers. We're finshing our full set of original material this month and will be playing out after the Avengers get back from Europe next year. There may be a new record label for us very soon, one that is actually known. Other than that I hope everyone's holidays are going well.

Johnny

IMPORTANT!!!! This will be our best Decompression ever, but we need your help and cooperation to make this a positive experience for everyone and to save Decom!
DO's and DON'Ts For The Day:
* Do come at noon to enjoy a very special full day of art, theme camps, performances, great people and community!
* Express yourself in your finest playawear and costumery
* Pack a picnic for the park and warm clothing for night.
* Respect our neighbors. Enter and leave the Dogpatch--our home for 7 years--very very quietly!!!
* Dont park in driveways or drive on Minnesota St.
* Tread lightly on our beautiful new park...no stakes, no unleashed dogs, no fire or amplified sound, no vehicles or bikes of ANY kind in the park.
* No renegade sound systems or unauthorized fire art/fire performance. If you haven't already been confirmed for sound or fire, please leave it at home! (no exceptions)
* No drumming, loud or amplified sound after 10pm—ANYWHERE on Indiana or side streets! All theme camps must stop sound at 10 sharp! If you hear it, stop it! (this excludes Gamelan X on the Mariposa Stage performing 10pm - 11pm. They’re supposed to do that!)
* Do stay from 10-Midnight to quietly talk and enjoy our time together
* LEAVE NO TRACE! Pick up any trash and help us recycle
* Leave your cars home: Take mass transit or bike. There will be a Taxi Stand at the corner of 18th and Minnesota end of night and bike racks are at the corner of 19th and Minnesota.
* If you drive, carpool, avoid driving on Minnesota St., and park at UCSF Lot on 16th St. and 3rd (enter off 3rd St going South OR 16th, going East. Should be just $5-$6 all day, instead of usual $20!), park near Ball park or on Illinois St.
*** Please come back Monday 11am-4pm for our annual neighborhood and park clean-up! We want to leave things in even BETTER shape than we found them. We’ll start on Minnesota and 19th, move to the park, Indiana, then surrounding streets. We have a small and hearty crew, but many hands make light work. Bring gloves, brooms, shovels and plastic bags if you got 'em. We’ll bring donuts and love you even more! HOORAY!!!
See you at Decom!!! …and THANK YOU for bringing the best of Burning Man to SF and for your part in creating "Black Top City"!!!

We had just pulled up to Home Depot, in Windsor, yesterday when this HUGE Ford pulled up across the parking place from us... I was amused that the fella was playing some really loud tunes.. then I heard the song.....

"the good die young"

but it sounded a little different.... So's I wait for the feller to finish parking ~it took him a bit~
and asked, "it that a tape?"
"No my IPOD" he says......
I say "Do you know that band? That's a No Alternative song"
"No it's The Hellbillys, I stole the music from my daughter, I really like it."

"ohhhhh, The Hellbillys... I'll tell the fella that wrote the song that you like it"

Hey Hipsters,

Jenn and I are flying out to Memphis and Clarksdale to hang out for the next week. For those of you not sure what is to be found in Clarksdale Mississippi; there would be no punk or any rocking music if it were not for the bluesmen would paved the path the allowed the rest of us to pick up guitars. This is the real home of the blues and as a guitar player I have to go to the birthplace of it all. Check it out if you ever find yourself in that neck of the southern woods....

Greetings Hipsters,

We're almost finished with our practices and will have roughly 30 songs for our set. We're looking at the end of August to start playing shows. We will play a limited number of Bay Area shows and will play the Lava Lounge in Hollywood. We will also be rehearsing new songs for the next CD. We will write and play new stuff because you cannot preach creativity if you're stuck in the past. I'll be posting lyrics to the new songs here on Tribe. I read reviews of other old school bands and too many of them play the same stuff. I wanna hear new songs from old bands, not the other way around.

Johnny

I suppose I'll start this forum for the mentally challanged off with a few well placed words of moronic overtone. The idea here is to have a place other than myspace to spout commentary about the band. I myself (I-myself? there is some poor use of the English language) are tired of websites not run by the actual band members. I was crushed when David Bowie didn't respond to my email to him on myspace. I got a comment from a young band in the midwest who wanted to know if it was really us running the No Alternative website. Bands should have to run there own sites period (unless you're The Mutants, my favorite band who can get away with anything in my eyes because they're such good song writers). So Blah Dee Blah Dee Blah, welcome to my personal hell.

Greetings Aging Hipsters,
Its Sunday morning and I've been up since 8:00 am. Yeh, gone are the days of sleeping in until the sun sets. My mother is here staying at the Genocide/Lohman compound as I refer to our house. Today's agenda: work on the new No Alternative CD and take my mother out for Mother's Day. I have a home recording studio so I can lay down tracks for the new songs. It's set up so I can watch my favorite HBO show Deadwood and work on music at the same time. I hope all of you plan on calling or seeing your mothers today. If you don't have a mother call someone else's mother. You'll make their day! I'll have the list of new NA songs posted on myspace and here on tribe this week. Stay tuned.

So Here's the plan. Two CDs. One is going to be nothing but live stuff from the past(and Mab Reunion show in August) and unreleased studio material. The second CD is going to be all new stuff which I am currently finishing writing. No Alternative is playing the next Fab Mab Reunion show in August and will be recording some of the live CD there. If you have any thoughts or song requests make them now so we can include them in the set.....

Including the rest of you in our madness

Greetings You All,

In an effort to involve people in the day to day activities of the band we, the collective nitwits and intellectuals here at No Alternative Enterprises and World Domination Ltd, invite you to ponder the following:

Instead of me being egocentrical and trying to run the whole three ring circus, I invite you to provide ideas for songs, art work for our next CD of original material (including the cover art), flyers for shows, etc.

For the next album the rules are simple: The CD is going to be the story of the rise of punk. Think of it as Quadrophinia sung by a chainsaw. There will be 14 to 16 new songs. What shall we do with the cover art? Another rule: you need to be either part of our tribe of our group of satan's little helpers on myspace. Yes, its another marketing ploy to build our ranks, but hey; at least you get a say in what this band does. Tell your friends, specially the young ones who need to be involved with something other than American Fucking I-Dull....
