It took a freedom of information act to expose the truth. The drug makers have been hiding the negitive studies.
http://www.counterpunch.org/cox01272008.html

Now a new Study: Antidepressants Work No Better Than Placebos for the vast majority of depressed people.
http://medicine.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request=get-document&doi=10.1371/journal.pmed.0050045

The drug makers have been out right lying about the efficacy of antidepressants. They have been caught red handed.

For the majority of people, the drugs are no better then snake oil.

If the only problem was that, the drug is a placebo for the vast majority people who have been given it, I would not care.

But it is far from the only problem!

The Physicians' Desk Reference lists the following adverse reactions (side effects) to antidepressants among a host of other physical and neuropsychiatric effects: manic reaction (mania, e.g. kleptomania, pyromania, dipsomania), emotional lability (or instability), abnormal thinking, alcohol abuse, hallucinations, hostility, lack of emotion, paranoid reaction, amnesia, confusion, agitation, delirum, delusions, hysteria, psychosis, sleep disorders, abnormal dreams, and discontinuation (withdrawal) syndrome. Adverse reactions are especially likely when starting or discontinuing the drug, increasing or lowering the dose or when switching from one SSRI to another SSRI. Adverse reactions are often diagnosed as bipolar disorder when the symptoms could be entirely iatrogenic (treatment induced). Withdrawal, especially abrupt withdrawal, from any of these medications can also cause severe neuropsychiatric and physical symptoms. It is important to withdraw extremely slowly from these drugs, usually over a period of a year or more, under the supervision of a qualified and experienced specialist.

In addition to the adverse reactions listed in the Physicians' Desk Reference, the FDA published a Public Health Advisory on March 22, 2004 which states (in part): "Anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, akathisia (severe restlessness), hypomania, and mania have been reported in adult and pediatric patients being treated with antidepressants for major depressive disorder as well as for other indications, both psychiatric and nonpsychiatric."

The vast majority of school and other recent massacres have involved people going on or coming off these drugs.

Many otherwise loving parents have killed their own children wile going on or coming off these drugs.

This website is a collection of 2100+ news stories with the full media article available,
http://www.ssristories.com

I have personally witnessed some who who became scary psychotic and violent wile in withdrawal. Someone who is normally highly, intelligent gentle, kind and loving. This is a person I dearly love.

For some people the often horrendous withdrawal effects last for years after quitting.

Withdrawal effects such as Suicidal thoughts, Suicide attempts, Homicidal thoughts or urges, Chest pain, racing heart, Auditory hallucinations, Visual hallucinations, Disequilibrium, Serious Headache, Numbness, burning, Electric zap-like sensations in the brain, Electric shock-like sensations in the body, Abnormal visual sensations, Spasms in the eyes, Loud ringing or other noises in the ears, Abnormal smells or tastes, Drooling, Slurred speech, Blurred vision, Muscle cramps, stiffness, twitches and much more. Most people describe it as hell.

Frequency of withdrawal reactions
Antidepressant______halflife_______Frequency of withdrawal reactions

Effexor____________5 hours_____________78%
Paxil_____________21 hours_____________66%
Zoloft____________26 hours_____________60%
Prozac___________4-6 days_____________14%

People can become completely incapacitated by SSRI withdrawal.
Reference: “The Antidepressant Solution” by Joseph Glenmullen, M.D.

Suicide, homicide, nightmare side effects all for a drug that is little more then snake oil for the majority of people.

Hello, I have a rare syndrome called complex regional pain syndrome. I am wondering if any one has any idea as to what I can do for my self to overcome this disfunction. I am currently taking a multi and mag/cal reverse ratio, pantothinic acid and B complex. I have made an herbal mixtute of three parts. 1.Austragulus, valarian, siberian gensing, and licorise. 2.St. johns wart, ginkco. lemon balm, scullcap, chamamile, oat straw. 3.Spiriment, chamimile, and hybiscus. The last set is just to make it taste yummy. I do physical therapy too. It is the nervous system overreacting and affects my circulation. The body does not recieve enough oxygen either. I know it is rare, but if any one has either known someone, or has worked with someone , please let me know what you or they have tried that seemed to work. Thank you and blessing.

FDA using legal trickery to control and eliminate alternative medicine. Action needed by April 30.

The FDA is claiming regulation rights on ALL products recommended by alternative health care practitioners. All herbs and supplements would be defined as untested drugs.

If they succeed, they could ban or require prescriptions for vitamins, minerals, amino acids, EFAs, enzymes, probiotics, protein powder, herbal or homeopathic remedies, basically everything on the shelves at your local health food store.

To read background info and sign the petition, go here:
http://tinyurl.com/2u7ghc

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Here is the message from Dr. Rima Laibow of the Natural Solutions Foundation, who has been valiantly leading the fight against implementation of Codex Alimentarius:

There is a crisis in health freedom. On April 30, 2007 the FDA will close the public comment period on a "Guidance" which will classify every alternative practice as medicine so that only licensed physicians can carry out the procedure AND vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc., will suddenly become "untested drugs" which will be forbidden.

Bad? Real Bad! But public outcry can stop this assault on your health and your freedom.

Spread the word! Tell everyone in your Circle of Influence, professionals, alternative practitioners, nutrient and herb companies, everyone! Let them know how important their participation is to make sure the FDA backs off from this repressive course.

Please share this link with them and urge them to take action: http://tinyurl.com/2u7ghc

Yours in health and freedom,
To read the actual FDA “guidance”, go here:
http://www.fda.gov/OHRMS/DOCKETS/98fr/06d-0480-gld0001.pdf

If you don’t have time to read it, here is my summary:

* The FDA is, in fact, attempting to claim “regulation rights” to every sort of alternative healthcare modality, in five major categories:
-	biological-based practices (plant- or animal-derived extracts) (would include herbs and homeopathics, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, proteins, pre-biotics, pro-biotics, “whole diets,” “functional foods”)
-	energy medicine (both machine- and human-generated)
-	manipulative and body-based practices (any hands-on bodywork)
-	mind-body medicine (specifically includes meditation, yoga, spirituality!)
-	“whole medical systems” (e.g., Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, Naturopathy).
* The FDA is, in fact, attempting to claim “regulation rights” to ANY products or devices used in the provision of ANY of these therapies if any health benefits are claimed.
* There is language that would define all untested herbs as drugs or “new drugs.”
* There is specific language that would define vegetable juice as a drug IF therapeutic benefits were claimed.
* There is language that would claim regulation rights to any food additives (such as botanicals or enzymes), unless they were commonly used in foods prior to January 1, 1958, or have since been scientifically tested safe.
* There is language that would classify the bacteria in probiotics in the same category as vaccines and viruses, and therefore require a license to transport them across state lines.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Here’s what Dr. Jon Barron has to say about FDA regulating supplements and therapies:
http://www.jonbarron.org/blog_published/2007/04/fda_labeling_guidelines.html#more

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Sounds wacky, but Mike Adams has backup for his statements:
New FDA Guidelines Threaten Religious Freedoms: Holy Water could be regulated as “drugs” and rosaries as “medical devices.”
FDA attempting to regulate supplements, herbs and juices as “drugs”

Why is information on the Virginia Tech massacre, being suppressed ?

Why is information on the Virginia Tech massacre, being suppressed ?

Cho Seung-Hui is the 9th School Shooter Under Influence of Psychiatric Drugs — Documented to Cause Homicidal Ideation, Suicide, Psychosis, Mania and Hostility

The psycho/pharmaceutical industry and their minions are
shamelessly using the recent Virginia Tech shootings to push for more forced
drugging, more involuntary commitment, and more mental health "intervention"
. However, any rational person must ask why there has not been a federal
investigation into psychiatric drugs as they relate to school shootings.

In the aftermath of the Virginia Tech massacre, why has the major press
failed to ask why a thorough investigation has not been initiated to
determine the role, if any, psychotropic drugs--antidepressants in
particular--have played in most--if not all--school shooting massacres?
Will the press remain silent as Cho Seung-Hui's toxicology report is
concealed?

These drugs have been documented by the FDA to cause mania,
suicide, psychosis, worsening depression and even homicidal ideation .

If more than 1/2 the shooters were taking PCP or smoking Crack --
there would be an investigation, but those are illegal drugs and do not rake
in billions in profit for vested interests.

Why aren't these mental health "experts" asking what drugs Cho
Seung-Hui was taking after investigators found "depression medication" in
his belongings?

Release terminal illness once and for all!

Our subconscious mind is 88% of our mind, it is the seat of our emotions, fears, motivation, beliefs, habits, and behavior. Our conscious logic, reasoning, will-power is only 12%, which when incongruent with the subconscious, creates much pain for us.

I am a Certified Hypnotherapist and have decided to focus my energy in promoting the True You session (5-6 hrs), were I work with the terminally (physically and/or mentally). Through a process that cleans them up from their emotional baggage, anger, fear, guilt, sadness, and conflict, are released, and a new view of life and self emerge. People heal from chronic conditions, when the "drama" element of their past is resolved, such that they are not boggled down by emotions and pain. Last week I worked with a woman who had a hardening in her breast. After the session it was 70% gone, and day after- completely gone! To mention also her entire life has shifted, career wise, health, relationships, and her sense of self.

This session is not for everyone. Only those that are committed to rise to another level, and let go of a long lasting pain or dis-ease, will be the one's to truly benefit.

If you are one of these people, or if you know a person that has a terminal condition and has tried it all, you/they will benefit from experiencing this session.

Receive a $100 referral fee for every client you refer for The True You session.

Referral sources: Doctors (MD, DDS, Chiropractors, DO, PsyD) with an open and Holistic view on health.

I am not new to non-traditional health care but I need help.
I have contacted a strain of salmonella/ or giradia--I'm not sure which and Med doc's will not see me--I have no real income and without proof of income I have to have several hundred $$ to be seen. Needless to say I don't have the $$.
Both require similiar treatment with antibotics. Speciffically I need a pennicilian type drug. I have been able to get such in the past and know how to dose and use. Just have no contact for such at this time. If U knowa herbal alternative or can assist me --PLEASE--I am desperate and very sick. I do not misuse any meds. Generally I only use herbal remidies but echinecia and cayaine, my other reptoir of etc are not good enough for this. My information(avet) says only Flagyl, ampicillian.ciproflorcin, gentamicin will do the job in this situation.

my story about being drug free (new member)

My entire life (until a year ago) I would use medicine to treat illnesses or diseases. In 1999 I was diagnosed with schizophrenia. From there I was put on many differnt drugs with varying side affects from weight gain, to restless leg syndrome, the drugs all so affected the muscles in my eyes (occular estonia??) and mouth. The drug seamed to 'work' but I wasn't myself. I decided to do some resaerch on the drugs that I was taking. I started to call out the doctors that were trying to 'help' me. I took matters into my own hands. By random chance I discovered reki. I had gotten one treatment and FELT better. Then I started to research that, I got books and went online, I even got certified. Now keep in mind this healing process happened over many years. DO NOT stopping these strong mind-altering drugs cold turkey. I found a good doctor (rare) that would work with me on cutting down. I noticed that while cutting down on the medicine the side affects went away, I had more energy, was loosing weight, I was becoming myself again. Somewhere in those eight years I found a book that explained that sometimes a sudden rise in Kundalini energy can be misdiagonsed as schizophrenia. It was there in print, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! I decided to accept and appercitate this gift. So now I've been drug free for all most a year. I feel great.

This was my personal experience. I hope that it will help others. It is a honor to be a part of this group. thank you

SYNOPSIS

How are large drug companies benefiting from the latest trend of selling powerful psychoactive drugs to America's children? Do these drugs really help our children cure symptoms of supposed mental illness, or do they tend to increase depression, violence, and suicide? Are we really treating the root causes of mental illness, or are we just eliminating annoying symptoms?

This feature-length documentary examines the alarming growth in the prescription of powerful psychotropic drugs for adolescents and children. Leading experts, as well as Neil Bush, Michael Moore and Gary Null, provide insightful commentary about the growing trend to pathologize the behavior of children, and then require them to take mind-altering pharmaceutical drugs as a "cure." The documentary recounts the national tragedy of Columbine and focuses on the largely unknown fact that teenage shooter Eric Harris was on the psychotropic drug Luvox at the time he and Dylan Klebold took the lives of 13 other students at their high school. Violence and aggression, precipitated by prescribed drug use, is also explored in an unprecedented discussion between Mark Taylor, the first shooting victim in the Columbine tragedy, and Cory Baadsgard, a teenager on Paxil and Effexor who, in another violent incident, took his teacher and 23 students hostage at gunpoint in his Washington high school. The film proceeds to show the dangerous links between psychotropic drugs like Paxil, Luvox, Effexor and Prozac ñ commonly prescribed to adolescents for anxiety, depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - and the increased incidents of violence, suicide and psychotic behavior often observed in those children and adolescents who are taking the drugs. The film also provides compelling personal accounts, including a mother going to prison and losing her son to government authorities because she refused to give her son psychiatric drugs. Leading medical authorities and mental health professionals speak the unvarnished truth about current increased diagnoses of recently devised mental illnesses and the unprecedented prescription of a host of very powerful psychoactive drugs to "treat" them. Finally, this documentary explores safer, alternative methods for treating childhood mental illness. "

Drug-Induced Diseases

Response to 166 drugs cause Depression. 156 drugs cause Psychoses/ hallucinations
http://www.worstpills.org/public/page.cfm?op_id=5

Drug-Induced Diseases
How Extensive Is the Problem of Specific Adverse Drug Reactions?
Specific Patient Examples of Drug-Induced Diseases
Summary of Adverse Reactions and the Drugs that Cause Them
How Extensive Is the Problem of Specific Adverse Drug Reactions?

Each year, more than 9.6 million adverse drug reactions occur in older Americans. The referenced study found that 37% of these adverse reactions were not reported to the doctor, presumably because patients did not realize the reactions were due to the drug. This is not too surprising considering that most doctors admitted they did not explain possible adverse effects to their patients.1

The following national estimates are based on well-conducted studies, mainly in the United States:

Each year, in hospitals alone, there are 28,000 cases of life-threatening heart toxicity from adverse reactions to digoxin, the most commonly used form of digitalis in older adults.2 Since as many as 40% or more of these people are using this drug unnecessarily (see discussion on digoxin), many of these injuries are preventable.
Each year 41,000 older adults are hospitalized—and 3,300 of these die from ulcers caused by NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, usually for treatment of arthritis).3 Thousands of younger adults are hospitalized. (See list of drugs that can cause gastrointestinal bleeding.)
At least 16,000 injuries from auto crashes each year involving older drivers are attributable to the use of psychoactive drugs, specifically benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants.4 Psychoactive drugs are those that affect the mind or behavior. (See list of drugs that can cause automobile accidents.)
Each year 32,000 older adults suffer from hip fractures—contributing to more than 1,500 deaths—attributable to drug-induced falls.5, 6 In one study, the main categories of drugs responsible for the falls leading to hip fractures were sleeping pills and minor tranquilizers (30%), antipsychotic drugs (52%), and antidepressants (17%). All of these categories of drugs are often prescribed unnecessarily, especially in older adults. (See section on sleeping pills and tranquilizers, antipsychotic drugs, and antidepressants.) The in-hospital death rate for hip fractures in older adults is 4.9%.7 Multiplying this times the 32,000 hip fractures a year in older adults attributable to drug-induced falls, 1,568 older adults die each year from adverse drug reactions that cause hip fractures. (See list of drugs that can cause hip fractures because of drug-induced falls)
Approximately 163,000 older Americans suffer from serious mental impairment (memory loss, dementia) either caused or worsened by drugs.8, 9 In a study in the state of Washington, in 46% of the patients with drug-induced mental impairment, the problem was caused by minor tranquilizers or sleeping pills; in 14%, by high blood pressure drugs; and in 11%, by antipsychotic drugs. (See list of drugs that can cause or worsen dementia.)
Two million older Americans are addicted or at risk of addiction to minor tranquilizers or sleeping pills because they have used them daily for at least one year, even though there is no acceptable evidence that the tranquilizers are effective for more than four months, and the sleeping pills for more than 30 days.10
Drug-induced tardive dyskinesia has developed in 73,000 older adults; this condition is the most serious and common adverse reaction to antipsychotic drugs, and it is often irreversible. Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by involuntary movements of the lips, tongue, and sometimes the fingers, toes, and trunk. Since most of the older people taking these drugs were not actually psychotic, they have a serious side effect from antipsychotic drugs prescribed without justification.11 (See list of drugs that can cause tardive dyskinesia or other movement disorders.)
Drug-induced parkinsonism has developed in 61,000 older adults due to the use of antipsychotic drugs such as Haldol, Thorazine, Mellaril, Stelazine, and Prolixin. There are also other parkinsonism-inducing drugs, such as Reglan, Compazine, and Phenergan, prescribed for gastrointestinal problems.12 As mentioned above, most (about 80%) older adults receiving antipsychotic drugs do not have schizophrenia or other conditions that justify the use of such powerful drugs. (See list of drugs that can cause parkinsonism.)
A serious problem exists because both doctors and patients do not realize that practically any symptom in older adults and in many younger adults can be caused or worsened by drugs.1313 Some doctors and patients assume that what are actually adverse drug reactions are simply signs of aging. As a result, many serious adverse reactions are entirely overlooked or not recognized until they have caused significant harm.

The drugs responsible for the most serious adverse reactions in older adults are tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and other mind-affecting drugs; cardiovascular drugs such as high blood pressure drugs, digoxin, and drugs for abnormal heart rhythms;14 and drugs for treating intestinal problems.

Mental Adverse Drug Reactions: depression, hallucinations, confusion, delirium, memory loss, impaired thinking

Nervous System Adverse Drug Reactions: parkinsonism, involuntary movements of the face, arms, legs (tardive dyskinesia), sexual dysfunction

Dizziness on Standing, Falls Sometimes Resulting in Hip Fractures, Automobile Accidents Resulting in Injury

Gastrointestinal Adverse Drug Reactions: loss of appetite, constipation

Urinary Problems: difficulty urinating, leaking of urine

Specific Patient Examples of Drug-Induced Diseases

Fifty-four-Year-Old Woman Homebound from Lung Toxicity due to a Heart Drug Never Approved to Treat Her Condition

Liz was prescribed the drug Cordarone to treat a common heart condition. She was not told that the drug was not approved by the FDA for her condition. The pharmacy leaflet mentioned nausea and dizziness with the drug, but not death from lung toxicity. She is now dependent on an oxygen tank to breathe and does not have the strength to clean her house. It is estimated that as many as 17% of patients experience lung toxicity from amiodarone, and about 10% of them die.

Fifty-eight-Year-Old Man Develops Parkinsonism from Antipsychotic Drug Being Used to Treat His “Irritable Bowel” Problem

Larry, an otherwise healthy 58-year-old man with diarrhea believed to be due to “irritable bowel syndrome,” was given Stelazine, a powerful antipsychotic tranquilizer to “calm down” his intestinal tract. Stelazine is not even approved for treating such medical problems. Six months after starting Stelazine, Larry developed severe parkinsonism and was started on L-dopa, a drug for treating Parkinson’s disease. Presumably, the doctor did not realize the parkinsonism was drug-induced, and the Stelazine was continued. For seven years, Larry took both drugs. Then a neurologist specializing in Parkinson’s disease saw Larry, recognized the real cause of his problem, stopped the Stelazine, and slowly withdrew the L-dopa over a six-month period. Larry’s severe, disabling parkinsonism cleared completely.

As mentioned above, 61,000 older adults develop drug-induced parkinsonism each year. At least 80% of them, like Larry, should never have been put on the drugs causing the parkinsonism in the first place. Also, as in Larry’s situation, a large proportion of these people have doctors who think that their parkinsonism developed spontaneously.

The doctors not only fail to suspect that it is caused by a drug such as Stelazine, or other antipsychotic drugs (Reglan, Compazine, or Phenergan), but they add a second drug to treat the disease that has been caused by the first drug.

The same neurologist who “cured” Larry of his drug-induced parkinsonism saw, in just three years, 38 other patients with drug-induced parkinsonism and 28 with drug-induced tardive dyskinesia.

None of these people were psychotic, the one justification for antipsychotic medications. Rather, the most common reasons for using the parkinsonism-inducing drugs were chronic anxiety and gastrointestinal complaints. The most frequent culprit (in 19 of these 39 patients) was metoclopramide (REGLAN), usually prescribed for heartburn, or for nausea and vomiting. Doctors often prescribe Reglan before trying other more conservative and safer methods. Other drugs that brought on parkinsonism included Compazine, Haldol, and Thorazine.15

Sarah’s 80-Year-Old Father’s Confusion and Hallucinations Were Induced by His Ulcer Drugs

Sarah wrote us about her father, saying that she had to repeatedly nag his doctor about the possible role of her dad’s ulcer drugs in causing confusion and hallucinations before the doctor listened. Three different drugs—Tagamet, Zantac, and Pepcid—had been tried for her father’s ulcers, and each had caused these adverse reactions. When the doctor finally switched Sarah’s father to an antacid, Maalox, his mind completely cleared and he was his old self, no longer confused or hallucinating.

Seventy-nine-Year-Old Woman Has Reversible Mental Impairment

Sally, the mother-in-law of a physician, was noted by her son-in-law, who had not seen her for several months, to have suffered severe impairment of her otherwise sharp mind. She was acting confused and, for the first time in her life, was unable to balance her checkbook. When questioned by her son-in-law, she was able to remember that her problem had started around the time she was put on a tranquilizer, Ativan. After this link was discovered, the drug was slowly discontinued and all of the mental impairment that had begun when the drug was started disappeared.

Sixty-four-Year-Old Man Has Auto Accident After One Dose of Tranquilizer

Ben, the 64-year-old uncle of a physician, was scheduled to have a biopsy done at a local hospital at eight in the morning. So that he would be relaxed for the biopsy, four days before it was to be done the doctor gave him a free sample of a tranquilizer, Xanax, to take an hour or so before the procedure. Ben was not told that he should not use drugs like this if he was going to drive and, while driving to the hospital for the biopsy, he blacked out. The car went over a fence and sustained $6,000 worth of damage, but fortunately Ben was unhurt. (See drugs that can cause automobile accidents.)

Sixty-three-Year-Old Gets into “Drug-Illness” Cycle

Nancy, a healthy 63-year-old woman, complained about difficulty going to sleep. Instead of taking a careful history and finding out that she had recently started drinking several cups of coffee at dinner, her doctor prescribed a sleeping pill. A subsequent referral was also made to a psychiatrist because of depression (possibly partly induced by the sleeping pill), and an antidepressant drug was also prescribed. If this patient also took an antihistamine-containing drug for a cold (not an effective treatment), she would be using three drugs, all of which have powerful sedative effects, which could make her so groggy that standing would be difficult, and falling would be easy.

Sixty-Year-Old Woman Given “Overdose” of Propranolol

Elsie, a 60-year-old woman who worked as an assistant at a senior citizens’ center, was started on propranolol to treat her high blood pressure. Unfortunately, her doctor did not realize that the dose of this sometimes useful drug (see propranolol (INDERAL, INDERAL LA)) must be reduced in older adults, and she was prescribed 80 milligrams twice a day. Two days after she started taking the drug, she began feeling very weak—so much so that by the third day, she went to a hospital emergency room, where her pulse rate was found to be 36 beats per minute. This dangerously low rate fully explained her weakness. The drug was stopped and Elsie’s heart rate returned to normal. Later a low dose of a different drug was prescribed and had no adverse effects.

Seven-Year-Old Boy Dies from Drug Prescribed for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Bernie, a bright 7-year-old, was prescribed an antidepressant, imipramine (TOFRANIL), to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Because his parents were not provided with accurate, complete information about the drug, they were unaware that the drug could cause life-threatening heart arrhythmias, that the dose prescribed was too high, and that the tremor and convulsions that Bernie began to have were actually adverse drug reactions to imipramine. Treatment with the drug was continued, and one day, while at school, he collapsed and died of a heart arrhythmia. If his parents had been adequately warned about this drug, Bernie would be alive today.

In discussing the problem of adverse drug reactions in the elderly, the World Health Organization has stated some principles applicable to people of all ages: “Quite often, the history and clinical examination of patients with side effects reveal that no valid indication [purpose] for the offending drug has been present...Adverse reactions can to a large extent be avoided in the elderly by choosing safe and effective drugs and applying sound therapeutic principles in prescribing, such as starting with a small dose, observing the patient frequently, and avoiding excessive polypharmacy [the use of multiple drugs at the same time].”16

In other words, according to the World Health Organization, patients who suffer adverse drug reactions are very often victims of drugs that there is no valid reason for them to take.

A carefully controlled study examined the details of prescriptions of people being discharged from a community hospital with three or more prescriptions to treat chronic illnesses.17 The results of this study are quite disturbing, both in what they say about the doctors’ prescribing practices and in the evidence as to the potential damage that could be done to older adults as a result of these practices. Of the 236 people intensively studied:

Eighty-eight percent of the people had one or more prescribing problems with the prescriptions they were given. At least one potentially serious, life-threatening problem occurred, which could have been as a result of the prescriptions written for 22% of these patients.
When the specific problems with the prescriptions were examined, the results were as follows:

Fifty-nine percent of the patients had been given one or more prescriptions for a drug that was an inappropriate choice of therapy because it was either “less than optimal medication given the patient’s diagnosis” or there was no established indication for it;
Twenty-eight percent of the patients were given too high a dose of the drug, an “overdose”;
Forty-eight percent of the patients were given a combination of drugs that can result in one or more harmful drug interactions;
Twenty percent of the patients were given drugs that unnecessarily duplicated the therapeutic effect of another drug they were taking.
The good news from this study, however, was that a consultant pharmacist, involved in the care of more than 50% of these patients, was able to reduce the risks by making recommendations to the prescribing physicians.

Available on the web site are lists of the most common drug-induced adverse effects along with the drugs that can cause them. In the box below are some of the symptoms that, although they are frequently caused by drugs, are the kinds of problems that you or many doctors might first attribute simply to “growing old” or “getting nervous” instead of to a drug.

Which Adverse Effects Can Be Caused by Which Drugs?

The drug-induced disease lists on this web site are to be used by patients who have any of a variety of medical problems (or by doctors) to find out which drugs, especially ones they are using or are considering using, can cause specific adverse reactions. The lists are compiled from a variety of sources.

Although some of these adverse effects occur most commonly in older adults, all of them have also been documented in younger people, although not as often in some instances.

Dear Editor

Regarding “Uncovering an Epidemic — Screening for Mental Illness in Teens” by Richard A. Friedman, M.D.

I strongly object to The New England Journal of medicine throwing away its own reputation by allowing itself to be used in a misguided effort to legitimize the sleazy marketing ploy known as “Teenscreen”.

The credibility of The New England Journal of medicine has been badly damaged by choosing to publish this blatant example of advertising masquerading as an informative article.

I suggest that in order to recover its reputation,The N.E.J.M hire a reputable investigative reporter to research and expose Teenscreens long history of unethical behavior.

From the funneling of pharmaceutical moneys thru front groups such as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, to its history of screening children without parental consent to its refusal to show its “test” to parents and school board members; the teenscreen organization has shown itself to be secretive and dishonest.

With its absurdly high rate of false positives,Teenscreen is a program that is as likely to do great harm as good. Look deeper and you will discover that this is nothing more than a furtive scheme concocted by the pharmaceutical industry to sell more drugs.

The New England Journal of medicine has much to lose by aligning itself with insidious corporate PR firms and disreputable organizations. If The New England Journal of medicine continues to allow itself to be used to launder the filthy reputations of organizations such as teenscreen, The Journal will cease to have relevance and indeed will end up with no more prestige than the real-estate magazines produced by realtors to order to sell houses.

In order to maintain its high professional standards The New England Journal of medicine must now expose Teenscreen for what it is, a conniving, mendacious effort to further expand the coffers of a bloated and devious pharmaceutical industry.

By the way, Teenscreen claims that its only critics are scientologists.
I have no connection to the Church of Scientology what so ever.

Sincerely

Depakote

Hi, I just joined to toss youz a couple Qs.

I was poisoned by a drug called Depakote from the ages of 15-17 which altered me drastically physically.
I gained a ridiculous amount of weight, my skin lightned, and I had perputual black circles under my eyes. Emotionally i was deadened, I had no concern for the fact that I was obese, and I would sleep for god at least 13 hours at a time (my dsg 750mg twice a day i think)

I have detoxed from the drug what since it's been 5 years since i got off of it, but do you all know if there's any way to find real, honest doctors that will tell you if there are real honest long-term effects?

Most school shooters have been on antidepressants.

In the last few months There have been three school shootings in the news. At least two of those school shooters were on antidepressants, as have been the majority of all of the shooters in the gun-related massacres that have made headlines over the past decade,
Most of these night mares have had one thing in common: They were perpetrated by people taking Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox, Paxil or a related antidepressant drug.

A new website has been launched providing ready public access to more than 1,000 of these news reports,
http:// www.ssristories.com

And violence is not the only danger posed by antidepressants. The internet is full of sites attempting to warn people about the many dangers.

They need to know about the mania, the suicides, the rages, the psychosis and the violence these drugs can cause. While these effects are rare, they are all to real. With the SSNRIs these effects can happen with a single missed dose! Many tragedies could have been averted if doctors and pharmaceutical companies had only given sufficient warning.
Anyone experiencing any of the following wile on these drugs should NOT be left alone or with young children! Racing thoughts, hearing voices, hallucinations, Agitation, impulsivity, aggression, confusion, thoughts of self harm or harm to others, or any weird thinking, rage, intense mood swings, uncontrollable crying spells or any signs of mania! Get immediate medical care. If you think God or the devil is talking to you ITS THE DRUG!

They need to know about this site and they need to know how to get thru withdrawal safely. ( withdrawal NOT so rare.)
This site has over 500 articles.

Just read that the movie Hi, My Name is Bill W is coming to DVD soon. This is actually great news for me because I enjoy this movie (it's actually my favorite James Woods movie, yes even more than VideoDrome. And I also think it's a great movie for people new and old to the recovery process. IMO it's the best movie about alcoholism and certainly the best movie about the foundation of AA.
