So it seems like most of the people I know do ren faire, but they've all been doing it since they could walk. I've heard that there are workshops, but I never seem to know when those workshops are and I know there are guilds, but I have no idea how one might go about joining one. I only first heard about ren faires in general a few years ago and have managed to become part of the dickens faire. Oh, and I'm up the bay area in california, so if anyone has info specific to this area, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! Up near the bay area workshops are currently being held for the Northern California Renaissance Faire, near Gilroy. Classes will continue for the next two weekends, followed by a dress rehearsal. Performance weekends are September 6th through October 12.

Guild auditions were held last week end and will be held again this following weekend.

Further participation information can be found on their web site: www.norcalrenfaire.com/participation.asp

for the 2 big faires workshops start 4 to 5 weeks before opening day

most small faires have no workshops since they are only for a weekend or 2

southern faire starts around the beginning of march
    northern beginning of august

most groups at the 2 big faires have websites check out the links section for more info

I would say come out this weekend and see if there is a guild that fits what you want to do and talk with the guildmasters some are still accepting new members

Friends of Faire is a good way to start.

But definitely come to Casa de Fruta this weekend. Workshops have already started.

You will need to get to Casa this weekend if you would like to work in Entertainment this season. The first workshop starts at 10:00am...Main stage area is where we are set up with schedules and registration forms. If you don't find a guild to join, which is unlikely, we need volunteers for our volunteer service program. They adhere to the same guidelines and participate in the same fashion as guilds. We also require costume approval but we will guide you through that. You may camp on site free during workshops. Hope to see you there,

      Molly

do i need to come both saturday and sunday? or would it be possible to come on saturday or sunday and then come again next weekend? In terms of costume, my plan is pretty much to bring a bunch of stuff and see what's suitable. most of my existing garb is 11th-15th century.

this weekend has the majority of classes
the next 2 weekends have only a few and you will need 9 as this is your first time and you can get in only 3 a day
I would plan on both days

I believe the Queen's Gaurd is looking for more Yeoman and they have most of what you need for costuming

ok, according to the current schedule on www.norcalrenfaire.com/downlo...008.pdf

it is impossible for me to get to all the classes i need no matter what. I need to take:
            Rules of Play
            Costume Guidelines
            Meet N Greet
            BFA

All are in the 12:00-1:30 time slot. None of those classes are offered on Sunday, August 24th.

Even If I had showed up last Sunday, I would still have to struggle to make all the required classes. Dickens Fair only has 3 required classes at workshops...

              take what you can
you can get 6 out of the way this weekend and 1 or 2 next weekend
you make the effort you can get in even if you don't get all that you need

rules of play and costuming are the ones that can be taken later so get the others out of the way

you can get 6 done this weekend and 2 the next for 8 out of 9

Molly is in no way a tryant and has posted here to give you info
you make the effort and things might work out

ok, next (and hopefully last) question: what should i bring? I have large amounts of 12-15th century garb, armour, weapons, and accessories.
I've seen Landsknecht in guilds at faire, so I know some of my 15th century stuff wouldn't look too out of place compared to the early Landsknecht period.
