Who is here to whine and rant (with no danger or inconvenience to themselves), with no responsibility for their place in the world and their choices (or lack thereof), and who is willing to DO, to ACT, and to take a STAND. . .?
In others words, who are the posers and who are the true *radicals*?

Re: Whiners and doers . . .
Tue, March 11, 2008 - 1:08 PMWell, I suppose that depends on your definition of radical -- or whining for that matter.
If there is one thing I've learned about activism its that it takes all types and its really hard to judge sincerity or who is really making the most impact.
Simply judging from the name of this group though, I'm just gonna cast a net and say that most people here sincerely believe in change. Whether or not we agree totally on what that change is up for grabs, but as they say in AA "admitting the problem is step #1". -

Re: Whiners and doers . . .
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 6:55 AMThere is a difference between believing and doing. This country has too many *believes* and too few *doers*. As JC was quoted, one will be judged by one's acts. I know so-called progressives who are as racist as the rednecks they look down on.
I care little for what one believes. Who one is, what one is all about, is not at all about *belief*, but about how one acts in the world. Just like being kind is not about what one choose to believe, it is about how one acts.
The key word in activism is *act*.
Personally, I care little about radicals, democrats, republicans, or any group identifications. In the end, how one acts is what speaks about you.
I want to be remembered as a doer, not a whiner or a ranter. And not as a radical. But as a kind person who acted when I was called upon to act. -

Re: Whiners and doers . . .
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 11:13 AMI see much of the problem that leads to more beliefs than dooers is that people are conditioned to fear that the repercussions are worse than the outcome. I've often notice this when discussing with people who like the idea of a society that is more democratic and egalitarian than the ones we have experienced throughout history, but are worried that the actions that will be needed to make changes are only going to bring a police state.
Those of us in this tribe, and the main radical tribe are usually pretty well aware that we need to act. And we need to be careful of not accusing others of not doing. We all have different personal capacities, and we all have to our strong points. The one thing that we must learn not to do is alienate others to the point that we are turned off by the movement altogether. -

Mon, March 17, 2008 - 6:18 PMwhat is the movement ;-? i don't have a union card for this movement ;-}
perhaps people are too careful. in earlier times there was fierce debate and people of all stripes didn't feel the need to be polite when it came to social issues. why must we step so lightly? must we all be politicians ;-? -

Re: Whiners and doers . . .
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 7:27 PMI say don't wait for a union. It ends up not being all that great for workers who don't belong already. There used to be a saying in the Bay Area; If you don't like the news, go make some of your own. I was at a place were we were blocking an entrance to Chevron. The 19 there is going to be plenty of action in SF www.actagainstwar.net/ Unfortunetly because I have been unemployed for so long that when I got a work assigned from a temp service, I had to nix that idea for now. But it is going to be a great event. And people just have to go to Market and Samson in SF around 7:30 am. or later. There will be plenty of choices to disturb shit when you get there. If 7:30 is to early, come anyway, there will be people there throughout the morning.
Well, sorry that I drifted there but it was a good opportunity for me to plug it.
