There are 34 total instructors teaching a wide variety of topics. And yes, the schedule is done...

Can you believe it? December 29th and the schedule is done!!!

http://www.bellydanceintensive.com/pag_cms_id_13_p_schedule.html

Now I know a few of you are going to be irritated because there will be classes you want to take the conflict with each other. I am offering my apologies in advance. *sigh*...if only I had 2 full weeks of classes to fill...then we might have no conflicts. heehee.

Additionally, just because the schedule is done does not mean that I have all the bios/photos/& class descriptions from everyone. Nor is the shopping cart finished. So, for the moment, just the schedule is all I can offer. I know it's a teaser, but it will have to suffice for the moment.

Those of you who have already registered, as soon as I have the shopping cart finished, you will get to actually pick your classes. You will have first dibs!!

I previously stated that once the schedule was done that the price was going up to $295 for the weekend. Well... I also said it wouldn't be done until Jan. 1st. So this is your big chance to sneak in under the radar and register for the Super Early-Bird special. Payment plans are still available and you'll get first shot at the popular classes. Don't miss out...register today!!

Also, I'd very much like to make some friends here...I left my grown kids and my friends back in Phoenix, and I'm feeling the need for some creative and girl time! The belly dance community in Phoenix is thriving and I was part of it when I was there, even though I wasn't a dancer, yet. I'm kind of going through a time where I'd love to find an outlet for my creativity and belly dance just keeps calling me.
I live in South Reno, but that doesn't really matter. If there's anyone in the group that would like to discuss belly dance, teach me some moves or tricks, mess around with costumes or just go listen to some music and chill, please contact me!

PALACE STATION HOTEL AND CASINO (www.palacestation.com)!!!

We are so thrilled about what this space has to offer us!! We hope this makes it easier for some of our Northern tribe to join us for the weekend. Here are some of the features we are most excited about:

*Free Shuttle Service to and from the Airport
*Free Shuttle Service to and from the Strip
*The venue and hotel rooms are in the same building!!
*The vendors are INSIDE!!
*Internet access in every room
*Two pools and jacuzzis (for our weary bodies after a long day of workshops)
*Beauty Salon & Workout room
*8 restaurants in the same building!!!
*A private slot tournament for our group (LOL..why not!!)

Oh yes...there are discounted room rates:

Thursday 9/4/08
*Courtyard Rooms $55.99
*Tower Rooms $79.99

Friday 9/5/08 & Saturday 9/5/08
*Courtyard Rooms $79.99
*Tower Rooms $129.99

This is single or double occupancy. There is a $15.00 charge required per room for triple occupancy and $30.00 per room for quad occupancy in the Courtyard rooms. All Courtyard ooms are non-smoking. There is a $20/$40 per room for triple/quad occupancy in Tower rooms. There is also a $4.95 service charge per room per night + Clark County Room tax.

I can give you booking procedures closer to the event date. These are actually really great rates for Vegas. The normal price for these same rooms during the same week 2007 were $30-$40 higher, so I'm quite excited about it.

You are not going to believe how great this event is going to be. Stay tuned as more exciting news will be announced soon!!!

ZAMNA AVILA
RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL
Posted: 10/2/2007

For Melony Kuo and her 15-year-old daughter Sarah Yang, spending quality time together can be a workout.

So, after taking eight years of martial arts and achieving black belts in aikido, the pair has decided to try something different.

"I've always fancied dancing," said Kuo, 49. "I'll do whatever keeps me flexible."

The two Sparks residents recently signed up for a belly dancing class offered through the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department at the Sparks Senior Center.

The exotic Middle Eastern dances offer women, and even some men, a place to congregate and just have fun, class instructor Kay Conley-Rawson said.

"It's fun to go to a class where you can dance for yourself when you don't have a spouse that loves to dance, too," Conley-Rawson said. "You enjoy dancing but you don't need a partner to do it, and you meet a lot of women who also feel the same way."

Conley-Rawson, who has 13 years of experience in belly dancing, said the dance also helps women improve their self-esteem.

"I make the women stand in certain ways that makes them look taller and more confident, Conley-Rawson said. "They learn to be more aware of their bodies, more comfortable with their bodies and more confident."

Unlike other forms of dance, belly dancing is welcoming to all women, whether they are young or old, thin or large, of one ethnic background or another, said Andi Hill, an intermediate belly dance student.

"I don't think you have a support system in other dancing as you have in belly dancing," said Hill, who also has taken jazz and ballroom dancing in the past and has been taking belly dancing classes for five years. "(Other dance systems) want you to have a certain skill level or look. With belly dancing, everyone is beautiful."

Moreover, there are other benefits to taking a belly dancing class, Hill said. After two car accidents and a lengthy period of physical therapy, Hill decided to take the advice of a friend and try belly dancing as a form of therapy and exercise. The first few classes were painful, but she had so much fun that she continued going until the pain dissipated, she said.

"Belly dancing is about isolating muscles," said Hill, 44. "I was working out muscles I didn't even know I had. I have better movement, I can do a lot more muscle isolation, and I have less pain."

A key to the success of the class is the instructor. Conley-Rawson uses humor, analogies and tactile methods to convey her knowledge of the dance.

Sometimes she places her student's hands on her hips for them to understand a movement. Other times, she describes the moves they need to make as everyday tasks the women can relate to their lives, such as carrying groceries, carrying a baby and closing a car door while carrying a baby and groceries.

"If a paper bag (of groceries) is too heavy, we bring our hip forward and hold the extra weight of the bag," she said. "That's called the forward hip lift. If we have a 2-year-old (child) who wants to be held, we are going to shift our weight out and put the baby on the hip. That's called a side hip lift. If you have groceries in one hand, baby in the other and you have to close the car door, you take one buttocks and close your door with it. That's called a back hip lift."

Conley-Rawson also uses both ancient and modern beats to teach her class. She doesn't worry about the lyrics, but she finds rhythms to her liking that help in making her class enjoyable, she said.

But belly dancing isn't for everyone, Conley-Rawson said. There are three categories of students: those who love taking the classes for the exercise and the social aspects; the ones who love to dress up in the outfits; and the ones who want to perform.

"Once you get into (belly dancing) you either love it or you are like, 'I don't have rhythm to do this,'" she said. "I let them do their thing, and I try to make it interesting for them. It's a lot of fun and very colorful."

Kuo, a postal worker, said she takes pleasure in all of the above.

"I enjoy the fact that everything is coming from the center," she said. "You've got to have balance. And, most of all I like the jingles (placed around the waist), I gotta get those jingles."

Melony Kuo, 49, of Sparks, practices belly dancing during the Wednesday class.

If you go
What: Sparks Parks and Recreation belly dance classes
When: Beginning class is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; intermediate class is from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Continuous six-week sessions are available.
Where: Sparks Senior Center, 97 Richards Way
Cost: $42 for non-Sparks residents, $35 for Sparks residents taking the six-week session course. Walk-in students pay $7 per class day.
The only date they have available is Monday, October 1st as they will be traveling from the Northwest to San Francisco. My question to you is would you even be able to attend a workshop on a Monday night? Or even a late Monday afternoon?

Here is the email I received from Kaeshi:

We could teach a "Bellyqueen Sampler" workshop combining good old traditional technique, with edgier new fusions... shimmies, hip locks, accents plus introduction to BellyPopping, bellydance meets popping (under the umbrella of Hip hop). We can also teach choreography, combos, balancing techniques (for tray, cane, sword), PURE, innovative veil techniques....the list goes on... let me know if you want to me to provide more information here...

As I said, this is a quick survey because we need to give her an answer ASAP!

I am currently on the job hunt and thought that maybe one of you might know of a position that would be perfect for someone like me. (Not *that* position, sheesh!)

The type of job I would enjoy would be in marketing but not sales, meaning that if a company has a marketing/advertising/PR plan and needs someone to execute it, I'm their woman. I execute all kinds of marketing plans. Ideally, the position would be: Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, holidays & weekends off, health benefits, retirement plan, pay range in the high 40s to high 50s and located in Reno or Sparks.

Please let me know who to contact directly about the position and I'll ensure that I'll make you proud that you recommended me.
“Dance for Life!”

January 2007 Newsletter
Happy New Year to you all! Welcome to the first edition of the Asha Newsletter! We hope to make this a bi-monthly event, packed full of all the Asha news that you’ve been craving.

Letter from the Oval Office – President, Holly Johnson
Hello Asha Friends. Anyone interested in being part of the Drum Dance & Didgeridoo Festival Staff (vendor, performer, support crew etc.) should contact me for updates and applications.
Planning meetings are in full motion and there's plenty of room for input and opportunities from and for Asha Friends. If anyone wants in on the action let me know!! We're meeting every month, the 2nd Monday night 6PM -8PM at my house. Next meeting will be Jan. 8th. I could even post the minutes if you would be interested in keeping up with the DDDF process. Other important DDDF dates in January are: Tues 8:15AM Jan. 9, Cultural Events Grant panel hearing and the first Artown meeting for summer event organizers is at Noon to 1PM. Both of those meetings will be in the McKinley Art Center. I can be reached by email ashanurseholly@yahoo.com, cell phone 848-7203.
Shimmey On!!

We’ve got BABIES. Welcome Miranda and Kaz!
Please join us in welcoming the two newest members of the Asha belly dance and drum brigade.
Miranda Renee Grace was born on September 13th to Pam and Jim (of Slow Djinn Fez) Grace. Miranda is Latin for “Admirable” and Renee is French for “Reborn.” And for those fans of “Serenity” her name has another level of meaning. She joins her brother, Daniel Ian Grace who turned 2 on September 16th.
Kaz Asher LaShae Baron was born on October 28th to Monique and Eric Baron. Kaz is Slavic for “one who demands peace,” Asher is Hebrew for “happy, blessed” and LaShae is Gaelic for “hawk.”
As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Asha looks forward to grooming these two for future Asha performances.

Want to know more? Drum, Dance and Didgeridoo Festival 2007
It’s December but before you know it, July will be here! Mark your calendars now. Drum, Dance and Didgeridoo Festival 2007 will be Saturday, July 28th in Wingfield Park. We are planning tentative fundraiser shows for March, May and June. Potential venues include both Club Underground and Dreamer’s Dinner Theatre on 4th Street and the new Lamplight Pizza that will be opening this Spring on Steamboat Springs and Damonte Ranch Pky. There is also a warehouse on Keystone that is being converted into a Youth Performing Arts Center that may be worth looking into.

We have some new faces at Drum, Dance and Didgeridoo Festival this year! We are proud to introduce Bhakti Rasa. www.bhaktirasa.com/. Ronnie from Bhakti Rasa will be collaborating with Slow Djinn Fez, Mandra, David Blonski and festival musicians a new medley to be presented as the Finale at the festival. His piece will bring together Asha, Controlled Burn and the Bhakti Rasa dancers in a 15 minutes extravaganza! It’s not to be missed! Bhakti Rasa is best described as Exotic Electronica. Ronnie’s diverse dreamy vocals cover a wide spectrum of heart felt emotion that draws the audience into a state of bliss. Lush synthesizers and multi track sequences; Dance beats that drive the rhythm; Deep groove bass and electric hand drums complete the unique sound that is Bhakti Rasa. Guest artists add rich flavors to the already soaring verve. More than just a multi media musical performance, Bhakti Rasa is a sensory experience with belly dancers, hand drummers, fire performers, lighting effects and innovative projections.

Dancing with myself by Minya bint Tahari
I recently purchased two DVD’s (Afro Belly and Shimmy Shimmy Drop Drop) from Domba.
www.domba.com. For those of you not familiar with Domba, they are a high-energy troupe from
Arizona featuring their unique blend of African fusion belly dance. I only had the chance to
really watch one (if you have children, you know what I am saying) and that was Afro Belly. I love to
watch instructional videos! Quality wise, this one is top notch! The featured dancer in the first half
is Jenebah and the second half is Heidi, both of Domba. Each move is broken down into
sections, done as a completed move then shown at performance speed. The performer stands at the
mirror at a ¾ angle and the instructional portion is done as a voice overlay (which I personally
prefer).

On my agenda for future DVD watching is Shimmy Shimmy Drop Drop by Domba (AZ) and Arabian
Spices by Saahira of Urban Gypsy (TX). I’ve heard good things about East Coast Belly Dance by
Solstice and will be purchasing it in the near future.

Gone but not forgotten. A note from Lee Ann Malone “Isleen”
Hello! Well, I've finally done it! I've accepted an assignment to work home-based care with orphans and the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS in Botswana, Africa. I will be leaving on April 15, 2007 for a two-year service, to return June, 2009.
I am excited, apprehensive and a wee-bit scared. Check out the area:
www.gov.bw/ of course, this website is for tourism and doesn't show the darker side of the country: Botswana has the highest prevalence rate of HIV in the world with almost 39% of the adult population infected. I will be one of the sixth groups of PC volunteers to help - my impression is that the resources and education is there but the understanding by the people is not.
In the meanwhile, I am working at Mervyn's for the Christmas rush and they have asked me to stay on after they let the temporary people go. So, it looks like I have a job until I leave.
I have also been formally welcomed to the LA area - my car was vandalized two nights ago, nothing that a mere $900 won't fix. I was fortunate to find a Land Rover dealer who could take my car right away, most in the area couldn't do anything until @ the 20th.
I hope this finds you all well and looking forward to the winter break and holiday season.

Sala sentle (goodbye in Setswana, language of Botswana)
LAM
We are looking to set up a workshop on the 7th! She's given us a few choices for workshops and we're thinking "Funky Combos." These are new combos she's come up with that she'll be teaching on the Belly Dance Superstars tour this season. We'll see it here first!
I'm trying to get an idea of how many people would be interested.
The price would be $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
