What is an Urban Monk?

Buddha himself put aside worldly riches and became a homeless samana. Jesus wandered around as a homeless beggar as well.

As an organization, we are committed to bring awareness of homelessness not as a socio-econmic problem, liability, or detrement. The Council of Urban Monks realizes the full benefit of a homeless population in any society. We know that without our starving artists, our wise alcoholics, or our street musicians. . . we know that without this culture our cities would become homogenized, gentrofied, and just plain dull.

In fact, the Council of Urban Monks asserts that our so called 'homeless' brothers and sisters are in fact the few remaining examples of culture that can be found in the cities of the United States today.

While it is not required that you be homeless in order to join the council, what is required is that you have a genuine interest in exploring the possibilities of life as it can be fulfilled without the use of dollar for necessity exchange.

Exactly, this means that as an organization, our goal is to live in harmony with others...not in direct competition for our most basic necessities.
