Portland Hotels?

I'm having a tough time finding out about decent, but not too spendy hotels in Portland for my wedding guests... does anyone have any recommendations? The events will be downtown, in the winter, so something right on the Max or Streetcar lines or in Downtown would be the best.

Need non wedding help!

I recently got engaged to the love of my life. While we want some sort of ceremony to share our union with others, we are struggling with ideas on how to make this a *non* wedding that represents us and our commitment to each other and to our community in SF. I am so down with a ceremony, but I am blocked by my reluctance to follow traditions and with it falling on my shoulders as the woman.
We are Burners, but I don't want to do it on the Playa. It's been too done. We also do not want to pay some hotel and caterer to have some dinner and dancing formula. To be honest we just want to throw an f'ing amazing party in SF for our friends and family to celebrate. AND of course we are on a very tight budget.

Please please please peeps on this tribe. Tell me how you made some sort of ceremony out of your union that was YOU (and that was affordable). And where the hell do you even F'ing start finding resourced to have a "non wedding?" HELP!!!! PLEASE! Men, women, anyone, help us!

WARNING: Bad Experience with Rose Petal Floral!

I found Rose Petal Floral on Craigslist and hired her (Trang Vo) to do flowers for my wedding, which was three weeks ago. On my wedding day she showed up 1 1/2 hours (yes, 90 minutes) late with my flowers; she got there after most of the guests had arrived and we had to push the ceremony back 1/2 an hour. Not only that, but she did not call or make any attempt to let anyone know that she was running late.

The flowers looked okay to start, but my bouquet was falling apart half way through the reception, the flowers on my mothers hand corsage literally fell off, and the men's boutineers were wilted. Notice on her website that there are no testimonials.....Stay away unless you want her to ruin your wedding day like she did mine. Feel free to email me with questions as I would never want any bride to go through what I had to!

Do yourself a favor and don't work with her. She is just starting out and is very unprofessional. Because of her I was crying my eyes out on my wedding day!

Do you need an officiant for your wedding, life union, vow renewal, new baby, adoption, homecoming, housewarming, memorial service, graduation, grand opening, ribbon-cutting, anniversary or any other special occasion?

Let me help you create and perform YOUR CEREMONY YOUR WAY. My #1 concern is to listen to my client. I honour ALL beliefs and values. Incorporate different traditions, readings, music, cultures, and rituals...or I'll help you create your own!

You will NOT get a cookie-cutter, fill-in-the-template ceremony. Each ceremony is custom-written and personalized to reflect your tastes, preferences, and personalities.

NTK Overview

This Tribe isn't about slamming The Knot or other online resources, but let's face it--there's not a lot out there that doesn't smack you in the face with the notion that you have to buy every little doo-dad out there for your wedding, or have the Ultimate Princess Wedding.

What about those of you who want to get married on the Playa, or those who've been shooed away from vendors because you want a same-sex commitment ceremony (legally binding or otherwise?)

Have at it. Share your experiences. For full disclosure, I'm a professional wedding photographer and one-time event planner. Sure, I wouldn't mind getting some business out of this Tribe, but since I tend to book up fairly easily anyway, I'm considering this as a) a way to answer your questions about how wedding vendors operate b) an excuse to keep up with all the Tribes stuff while "working", and c) do my part to make your wedding a bit less of a headache.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding--whether it be a rock opera or simply the two of you on the beach at sunset.

I am a successful artist who creates custom works of art in mixed media. From retro to vintage to romantic to elegant to international to downright funky, your wish is my command at Fragile Industries Studios, http://www.fragileindustries.com.

I call my work "participatory altered art" -- I invite your participation in the design and creation of artwork with personal meaning for you, including your own personal mementos or photographs if you wish. Also, my pieces involve the viewer into becoming a participant in the work: pages turn, doors open, drawers pull out, revealing the art in different configurations. Finally, I can also create a partially-finished work or kit that you and/or your guests and loved ones can participate in the completion.

My most recent commission was for a wedding shrine for an outdoor wedding in Oregon. A shrine or altar is a devotional object, a three-dimensional assemblage with a wood base somewhat like a cabinet, shelf or box, depending on your your needs. It can be a memory object, containing momentos of your wedding, or be a part of the ceremony and/or reception itself.

This bride and groom wanted their guests to complete the shrine with embellishments I provided in keeping with their theme. I duplicated the beautiful colors of the invitation and painted the base, a intricately carved antique wall cabinet about 18"x9"x4" with two doors opening into a large interior recess, and two drawers underneath. I applied a collage of images, both those provided by the couple, and from Asian and Indian art (their theme) on flat areas of the surface, and applied gold leaf to the molding and elements of the carvings. I antiqued the finish, and sent it off with more collage images (peel and stick), handmade paper on which the guests could write their good wishes to put in the drawers, and three-dimensional objects that would coordinate well, such as hand-blown glass beads, Asian coins, hand-painted and embellished tiles, pressed flowers, and so on. I even included an easy-to-use adhesive method to avoid sticky mess. The couple was ecstatic and the guests had a great time helping to create a completely personal work of art that will have great meaning for years to come.

That's just one example. Hand-bound guestbooks and favor containers that are themselves beautiful keepsakes are other specialties. I will soon be posting photos on my site of the shrine as I sent it, and the couple will be sending me photos of the finished product which I will post when I receive them.

My fiance and I live in NC, but I want to get married in Oregon, where I'm from, and where most of my family live. We don't want anything really traditional, but it's hard to even get started thinking about it, since we're on a very limited budget and we live 3000 miles away! Anyone have any thoughts?

Here's a thread for people who are planning on getting married at Burning Man...dealing with Nevada laws, getting your non-Burner friends and family there and otherwise wrangling one of the most unusual Destination Weddings possible this side of the planet.
