Imagine yourself immersed in dance, surrounded by the beauty of the Texas Hill Country. You wake each morning with a ritual stretch on the green banks of the Guadalupe River. Your days are leisurely paced with morning and afternoon classes and plenty of time for hiking, swimming, shopping, practicing, and relaxing. Your nights are filled with music and dance, with henna, campfires, and with frienships old and new. This is Bahaia's HOT Dance Camp!

The first of its kind in Texas, Bahaia's HOT Dance Camp is held at Camp Arrowhead - a girls' camp in the summer months. The accommodations are rustic, but not primitive. Lodging is provided in community cabins, all wired with electricity. The community baths have private stalls and hot water. Three hearty meals and snacks are provided by the catering staff in the indoor dining hall. Classes are held in a spacious hall with hardwood floors, a raised stage, and a professional sound system. Shows and evening events are held on the river banks and in the dance hall.

The beauty of the Hill Country is breathtaking in October. This is the perfect, serene environment in which to expand your creative horizons and revitalize your passion for dance! Event is limited to 50 campers - don't delay!

Tamra Henna www.tamrahennatx.com

Princess Farhana is an amazing teacher, with a ton of information about traditional belly dance, fusion, and burlesque to share with us. We have an AWESOME lineup of classes with all three instructors, including Hollywood Raks Sharqi Combos, stage presence, a class comparing/contrasting belly dance/burlesque movements, finger cymbals, shimmies, floorwork, and fan technique for belly dance fusion (and burlesque).

Join us at Al Amir Greenville on Wednesday nights starting June 4th for FREE bellydance lessons. Instruction will be provided by Yeli, Tamra Henna and Sa'diyya, all house dancers at Al Amir and dance instructors in the DFW area.

This is a great opportunity to bring a friend or relative out that is interested in bellydance but not ready to take the leap to classes yet. This is also a great night out for anyone with a little shimmy in their hips! We will offer 45 minute to 1 hour lessons that will change each week. We will start with the basics and see what happens! Since each week is something different so you can jump in at anytime. It's like a bellydance buffet!

Classes will begin at 8:30 in the club area of Al Amir and we will provide hip scarves for everyone until they are gone. Everyone will have the opportunity to practice what they have learned as we open up the dance floor to everyone while the DJ spins some great music.

After the classes, everyone is invited to stick around and enjoy a professional performance by one of our dancers.

No purchase is necessary to join the class or watch the performance but you may want to relax with a hookah in the club or try the Chicken Shwarma and the yummy hummus!

This week Yeli will be starting us off with lessons on June 4th at 8:30pm. The performance will actually take place BEFORE the class this time. Show time around 8pm. So come early for the performance and stay for the class!

For instance if Souhail Kaspar decided one day to give up mid eastern music and play heavy metal rock and roll with Lars Urlich he wouldnt suddenly change his name to Bob or Steve. Even when I was out at the ren faire I never got into the name thing. No one uses them anyway "and a hand for our drummers"
What made you take the workshop ?
What do you remember about the workshop?

For me:
My instructor hosted a workshop taught by Yasmina Ramzy of Canada. I was so lost in the crowd there! Yasmina has such a powerful style that I could not comprehend at the "baby dancer" age. I think I got a whole 30 seconds of the choreo down that whole day. She challenged me though and now I wish at my current level of training, that I could take from her again so I could be challenged but "get it" this time.

Okay so let me preface this by saying I am someone who speaks his mind and sometimes things get taken the wrong way but I am not getting on the politically correct bandwagon anytime soon. So when I got into playing drums there were two styles of dance Cabaret and Ethnic. Mid way in my hobby I ended up out at a ren faire where that stuff wasnt really brought up. I didnt do the usual belly dance conventions so I was out of the loop away from the Shimmy in the Spring and other annual belly dance specific events. So now I am somewhat back in the loop or at least more aware of the goings on. So what is Fusion? What is Tribal? What are they based on? Where did they come from? Or are they both cabaret and ethnic but with different names?
Tribal came out of ethnic styles. Jamila Salimpoor to Carolena Nericcio then Rachel Brice. Look through them and you'll see the general progression. They've all done a fusion as well.

Fusion is "fusion" ---different styles mixed. Indo fusion, Asian fusion, Native American fusion ......fuse a different music/dance/costume style with bellydancing.

Nothing is pure anymore, nothing really was pure. Even today's Egyptian dancing has a lot of influence from American cabaret, which was based on Egyptian.

It's fluid.
Good question, Sean.

The different fusions, Tribal, American Tribal Style, all got me really interested in the dance part of what we do.

The first tribal dancer I saw was Kami Liddle, who blew my socks off.

The most recent incredible thing I've seen was Veda Foxx at the Jan 29 Kismet. She's 20, and self taught, so no one has told her "you are supposta do it this way, and not that." She wore something sparkly I can't define, did a cabaret style dance to the lounge version of "Brass Monkey". JessGwen, the MC, said it best, "I don't know what I just saw, but it was incredible!"

That's not to discount any of the other dancers. It sure makes it fun to play for them, because you never know what they are gonna do, but it'll be GOOD!
Tribal is not "ethnic" - it's a modern urban dance form, and I get into trouble for this a lot, but in many cases it's not even belly dance anymore, IMNSHO.

I think, Sean, if I understand the groups that you've been around in your career, that most of what was considered "ethnic" dance, was really cabaret with less sparkly costumes.

In my mind you have "cabaret" or nightclub style, which is really traditional belly dance, and it comes in many flavors, Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, American Cabaret, Modern American Nightclub.

You have "folkloric," which is saidi, debke, khaleeji, turkish folk dances (sorry I'm not terrible educated there), bambutiyya, ghawazee, etc. These are recreations, sometimes theatricalized, of real dance forms native to the middle east region.

You have "ethnic," which as I was growing up in dance, really meant a mish-mash of slightly more covered costuming, usually with pseudo-gypsy flair - big tiered skirts, pantaloons, vests, coins - this is pure Esmeralda fantasy based on Hollywood and not anything that ever occurred in reality anywhere in the ME or beyond.

You have American Tribal - a form which was born out of Jamila Salimpour's Bal Anat troupe - once again, very Hollywood-ized, but their costuming and music had a lot more actual ethnic elements from the ME and africa - assuit, cowry shells, coins - but the dancing was more free-form (hey, their heyday was in the 60's, so there was a large element of fantasy, but Jamila Salimpour did provide them with a strong foundation in movements that are considered universal belly dance vocabulary).

Bal Anat did not codify American Tribal Style, however. It grew from the endeavors of certain of her students, and their students. Masha Archer is a name I've heard Carolena Nericcio mention as being a great influence on her development of ATS belly dance. Carolena and Fat Chance Belly Dance were the first to truly develop ATS into it's own well-defined style, with it's own movement vocabulary and costuming aesthetic. Once again, it's a fantasy dance, incorporating elements of many different dance forms, from flamenco to indian to belly dance and some folkloric aspects such as turkish and ghawazee. The costumes were also a fusion of many different elements from around the world - turbans, pantaloons, big tiered skirts, indian cholis, coin bras, hip scarves with long fringe, and belts with camel tassels on them. Also included was ethnic jewelry from all over, afghani kuchi jewelry, and enormous spiked silver bracelets from North Africa. The dance aesthetic was strictly group improve based on well-rehearsed cues. The group visual is phenomenal, but the emphasis is very much away from individual interpretation. it is ALL about the group.

FCBD and ATS was a HUGE influence on the western belly dance scene. ATS became widespread because it appealed to a certain idea of belly dance and belly dancers as being extremely exotic looking, with tattoos, turbans, and a ton of jewelry and makeup. This aesthetic was very appealing to young women coming up in the dance, and individuals like Rachel Brice (incidentally also based in the San Francisco area and heavily influenced by Jamila and Suhaila Salimpour), took ATS beyond group improv. In essence Tribal Fusion took the ATS aesthetic and brought it back into the realm of solo performance and expanded the movement vocabulary. Tribal Fusion is a modern urban fusion style, heavily influenced by modern urban dances (hip hop, etc) with a basis in ATS vocabulary. The music used is increasingly not based in ME music, but is often heavily industrial. As time has passed, the visual aesthetic of Tribal Fusion has turned more towards the goth and the vintage, rather than the colorful pseudo-folkloric look of ATS dancing.
With the arrival of Tribal Fusion, it seemed that the fusion floodgates opened, and now it's hip to fuse anything and everything with belly dance, in an effort to make it more relevant to the individual, which is sad to me, because it seems like the easy way out - make belly dance an extension of western culture rather than make any real effort to understand the culture of its origin, and present (or at least be educated about) the dance in its cultural context, whether that be Arabic, Turkish, or American Cabaret style. They all came out of a particular culture, and I feel like the study of the history of the dance before Jamila/Suhaila Salimpour is sadly lacking in some quarters, and there are a lot of performers coming up now who have no idea who Samia Gamal, Nadia Gamal, Nagua Fouad, or Hani Mehanna, or Om Kalthoum, or Abdel Halim Hafez are.

Personally, I think that the farther away you go from the root of the dance, the less you can call it belly dance fusion, but i"m in the minority in this community.
I think I am even further down the chain in this minority, lol, since I started dancing nearly 25 years ago in the Dallas area.

Sometimes my head spins when I see some of the "fusion" pieces . . . not the BD that I grew up with . . . definitely not the music that I have loved for so many years. . . . sadly, even lots of the newer music coming from Egypt is more "Pop" than Middle Eastern. I like a lot of the older classical music and watch vids of the old Egyptian dancers all the time . . . well, each to their own.
I do have to say something for the dancers who fuse a lot of different things with tribal (and I've seen it done with American style cabaret as well)...a lot of dancers are trying to find their place in the whole scheme of bellydance, their own VOICE if you will...

I know I started at one end of the spectrum (fusing Gothic club dancing with bellydance) and now that I've progressed in my studies, not only in the dance itself but also the history behind it, I am moved to create pieces that are more "vintage" as well as "ethnic" pieces.

Now, rather than lots of industrial music, I'm drawn and inspired by the sounds of Eastern Europe as well as Middle Eastern music...

Tribal dancers here in Texas haven't had the same luxury that our counterparts in California have. We ARE the minority here and the teachers we have to seek out a few in number vs oodles in Cali. Many tribal dancers aren't at the place where they can truly appreciate the history behind the artform-they simply see The Indigo or BDSS and are inspired to learn to dance.

Frankly speaking, I haven't been to many workshops (cabaret ones included) where the history of bellydance was even touched upon. Olivia Kissel of Zafira taught a cane workshop in Houston two weeks and she actually explained some of the history behind that dance form before our workshop began.

That inspired me to look up older video clips and do research. I wish more teachers would do that. I, myself, am doing reasearch so I can give historical info to my students. We owe it to them.

Granted, I know many people in the Cabaret community dislike Tribal and some like to point out that we're not real bellydancers. Personally, I feel if a person's dance consists of 80-85% movement that any of us can identify as bellydance moves, then that person is doing bellydance. Heck Jillina incorporates ballet into her routines! Another sign of fusion happening!

I will say that I enjoy bellydance in ALL its guises when it's done well and is from ther dancer's HEART...
Obi, i fully agree with you on the teaching of the history. It would seem that alot of teachers, both cabaret and Tribal alike, don't teach it. Perhaps because they don't know themselves. I'm yet to work that one out honestly. I enjoy a workshop where they teach things and say we're doing this because of xyz. I like a transaltion if I'm dancing to music with lyrics.

As an off again on again teacher I always try to tell my students some history behind everything. Behind why we dance a certian way to a certain song and the history of that region. However, I know my education is lacking and honestly just don't have the time to do anything to remedy it. Between a day job, a job at the barn and a regular life things get tight on time for research.

However, I think it'd be a great topic to discuss as perhaps an NTMEDA meet up or something similar.

And there will always be fusion. If you even look at say Mahmoud Reda, he took folkloric dances and brought them to the stage but fused them to be very balletic. You can't stop the fusion, but you can always increase the education and also realize when a style moves from one style into something completely different. Much like lyrical is to ballet.
SATURDAY 10:00a WORKSHOP: "UNMATA au naturel"
This multi-level workshop will outline two tribal fusion combinations emphasizing technique and isolation. The first
combination will incorporate the building blocks of UNMATA's modern bellydance style. The second combination will focus primarily on the Hula Fusion nuance. Each movement will be outlined within a tribal cueing system so that it may be added to any troupe's choreography or tribal vocabulary. Amy will describe and drill each individual movement, then fasten them together into an accessible tribal combo that will be practiced in useful group and duet formations.
This workshop will be fun, fast, and furious. UNMATA believes in beat-your-butt technical practice, so bring water and come prepared to sweat.

SATURDAY 1:30p WORKSHOP: "UNMATA, The Fast & The Furious"
This intense workshop focuses on fast! Amy will lay down the stylistic foundation and technical breakdown for UNMATA's awe-inspiring omis, ferocious shimmies, and bad-ass body pops. Each movement will include "transition-training" so it can be used alone or linked with other movements to create a short choreography. UNMATA is known for beat-your-butt drilling and technical obsession, so bring lots of water and come prepared to sweat!
SUNDAY, JULY 6 George Washington Carver Theater, 1165 Angelina, Austin 78702
Doors Open 1:00p WS 3 hrs 1:15p – 4:15p	$42.00 at the door ($36.00 before May 1)
WORKSHOP: "Overlaying Isolations, Amy Sigil Style"

Amy's Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate toadvanced bellydance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results.Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop an awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA.

Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance and timing is prerequisite.
BOTH DAYS $112.00 at the door ($96.00 before May 1)

I was glad to see NTMEDA made the space and the time for a public discussion for the Professional Dancers, and then really disappointed that no one showed up. What happened? Does anyone know? I was really excited to see something get going-( as a teacher it would be great to be able to point students who are interested in getting in to ME dance professionally to a group where they could mentor) and it seems as if after all that bluster, no one would step up to the plate. What happened? This was pretty hot and I know I was excited about it....

We have encountered a small hiccup in our plans for this weekend’s workshop, but our NTMEDA board has dutifully fixed the problem!

There was a conflict (double booking) that was just realized by the Hurst Rec. Center. We have found an alternate location that may be more central for many of our members.

The times of the workshops are NOT changing, the classes offered are NOT changing and the instructors are NOT changing. The only thing that is changing is the venue.

All activities will now be located at the Grapevine Community Activities Center (1175 Municipal Way in grapevine). This location is just off of Main Street, directly behind the Grapevine Convention Center (where Yaa Halla Y'all is held). Same side of the road, same color brick, just a few buildings north of the Convention Center.

You can zoom in and out from here to find your way. It is located just off of 114 and 121 – SUPER convenient from many areas!
This is a VERY general question but we are trying to cater to the dance community as much as possible and would love to hear from you!
Here are some ideas:
What kinds of things/articles do you want to see in the Papyrus?
-what you do/don't like about the curret publication
What kind of events would you support if NTMEDA provided them?
-inexpensive workshops
-anything else/suggestions!?
Discounts to local dance events & boutiques for members only?
-a membership card with your re-newal date to present at discount providers
What would make you want/continue to be member of NTMEDA and why not?

I was asked to cross post this in this group. (I had posted it in another group) but it seems to be popular.. anyway...

Someone had posted on the SCA Musicians tribe asking why musicians were not coming to workshops... Why one time a doumbek teacher has 15 students and next time has only 1.

I have seen a similar problem (and had this problem myself) and sometimes it's just a fluke thing... sometimes it's not.

One thing I found is that the drummers/musicians aren't really included in the community, and this is what I mean:

There are haflas which are really student/teacher shows. They are 2 to 3 hours of dancers dancing to CD, and then at the very very very end (sometimes at midnight). There is a "drum jam" or "midnight drum jam" or something.

This makes the musicians feel cast aside (which they literally are). They need to REALLY REALLY be part of the show and community.

Here are some ideas to really build the community...

1. Invite drummers to play for dance classes. It's EXCELLENT practice and how I got my start. Believe me, I'd rather play baladi or chiftitelli for 5 minutes straight with a room full of dancers as opposed to looking at my stereo. This also encourages weekly practice.

2. Pair up drummers and dancers. So the next time there is a show/hafla the drummers and dancers can perform live. This is good because:
- The drummers and dancers will do extra practice outside of a class.
- It's gets people working together.
- It gives the musicians something to practice toward/look forward to.

even if the drummer just plays one beat for 5 minutes, at least they will think "Next time, I'd like to do more than just that..."

3. Get the drummers/musicians into playing songs. For this, send them to: www.dorku.com Melissa (clarinet) has uploaded at least 30 to 40 songs of simplified stuff. Encourage your musicians to learn 3 to 5 songs. (instead of just jamming).

4. Invite musicians to play during intermission (as opposed to at the end or as people are leaving).

NOW that the musicians are truly part of the community and see a goal, something to strive for...

... they may be interested in taking classes...

(I hope) :)

Many drummers I meet as I travel around and teach have this "What now?" kind of thing going on...

Satisfy the What Now? (so they don't get bored and go away...)

Someone mentioned having a teacher come in to "jump start" the drummers/musicians/etc.

Here are some great teachers:

Carmine (hey that's me!!!) :)
http://www.carmine.com

Raquy:
http://www.raquy.com

Karim Nagi:
http://www.turbotabla.com

-Carmine

P. S. Yes I'm cool with jamming :)

I have been thinking lately that I rely quit heavily on NTMEDA for some things that happen in our community and this past year I haven't really given much back, not equal to the benefits I have received anyways. So as this year winds down, I am thinking of next year and what my goals are for 2008 (I don't like resolutions, goals sound more productive) and it occurs to me that I have been a bit of a slacker when it comes to this organization that I feel is so important. Now, those that of you that know me might laugh out loud at the word "slacker" being applied to me, but it's true. Yes, I'm very busy, but I could have done more this year. Of course, things are better than ever this year, but I don't want to leave all the work that needs to be done to a few dedicated people. That's the fastest way to burn out these wonderful leaders. And it's because I admire their work so much that I feel the need to chip in and do my part. So, here I am confessing my sin of apathy with a promise to do better. I'm a little OCD, I need specific goals, so I have put on my list for 2008 to write 2 articles for Papyrus. That's not much, but I definitely can accomplish that (and it's more than I did in 2007 *_*). Perhaps other opportunities will present themselves.

JFK said it best, "Ask not what NTMEDA can do for you, but what you can do for NTMEDA" It was something like that wasn't it? *_*
This is your last chance to be included in the upcoming issue of the Papyrus. I try to obtain as much information as possible on my own, but if you have not taken a few minutes to send me your info, please, do not assume that the event will be listed in the calendar. I know there are many local yearly events that I have not received the actual dates for nor can I find this information on the internet. These events will more than likely not appear in the January issue of the Papyrus. I really hope you will take a moment to inform me of these dates, location, etc.. Also, due to our limited space and so many Cultural events available to our community, your event may or may not be repeated if your information is available within another part of the Papyrus. The NTMEDA Events Calendar is a free service NTMEDA provides to help further the education and entertainment of our MED communtiy. I want to thank those of you who have already sent in your information and the information of other events you think our community might be interested in.
