How do you know when you are hungry?

I know this seems like a dumb question but sometimes I have trouble telling when I am hungry or not. I'm super active and a size 2 so when I think I'm hungry I just eat and I don't worry about it too much. But it's not a healthy way to live and I worry about when I get older...

I should add that my schedule is kind of weird. I wake up at 9 eat breakfast and go to the gym (because you're suppossed to eat before you work out aren't you?) for a hour or 2 then go home and go to work 2-10pm. My lunch break is at 3 and then I eat dinner when I get home at 11 (It's the only meal I get to eat with my honey so cutting it out isn't really an option).

I'm not so sure it matters when you eat as opposed to what you eat...just make sure you are consuming enough calories for your activity level

optimum but hard to manage is 5 small well balanced meals a day. turns your body into a fat burning furnace but our busy life styles can make it difficult to manage on a daily basis. best practice is to eat a little before you get hungry because the physical symptoms of hunger are generally delayed (just like not waiting to drink water til you are parched).

I don't think it's a dumb question at all. Physically, the body often gives hunger-signals instead of thirst-signals when it's dehydrated, so when I feel uncharacteristically hungry, I always makes sure I'm drinking enough water first -- then, if I still feel legitimately hungry, I eat. Emotionally, the craving to eat can be a result of sadness or boredom or anxiety. So sometimes, if I'm going through a rough time, I'll check in with myself to consider whether I just need a little comfort or whether I am actually hungry. In those cases, I usually fix myself a nice cup of tea -- comforting and hydrating!

Our bodies are amazing machines. One common error we make is judging wether we are hungry or just "thirsty". Our brain can misinterpret (sp?) the signal given by our body and tell us that we are hungry when in fact we are just a little dehydrated. This can be especially true if we are more active. Some really good information about water can be found at: www.watercure.com/
