it's true. quinoa is one of nature's more perfect foods, and very easy to cook.

    I too heart the quinoa.

    have you tried spelt?

I used to like it too, but I was finishing up a bird-banding project in Ecuador (where there's LOTS of quinoa) and it being the last day, we needed to finish all the remaining food. We mixed it all together, called it "Inca Stew", heated it up, and tried to eat it. 100% of the reviews were "horrible". The mix did have a lot of quinoa, and I think if it hadn't been for the mustard sardines, it might have been tolerable...

it's sad when a few mustard sardines can kill a happy food like that.

I haven't tried quinoa, though I have read wonderful things about it. Any fun, tasty (and preferably kid-friendly) ways to cook it?

        (no sardines please) ;o)

I just cook it as it comes and treat it like rice. It has a slightly nutty flavour. My girls will eat it, there's nothing offensive about it on it's own.

I apparently mis-remembered the Inca Stew story. I guess senility comes with old age, but luckily I did a writeup of the whole adventure here:

        www.geometer.org/earthwatch/index.html

and here's the critical passage. And although the passage does not include anything about the mustard sardines, I DO rememaber them:

        --------

For example, as the end grew near, we ran out of more and more kinds of food, and the dinners got more and more strange. Dusty cooked on the final night, and made "Inca Stew" -- a bizarre collection of things including quinoa (pronounced "keen-wah") grain, polenta, vegetables, spices, and heaven-knows what else. It didn't taste bad, particularly, but it was pretty strange. That night, in the slumber party, she said something like, "There wasn't anything bad in the dinner, was there?" I responded, "There wasn't anything good in the dinner, was there?", which somehow managed to set off a laughing chain-reaction.

        --------

I guess I'd better give quinoa another chance ...

well.....have you ever experienced a beefquake w/ quinoa?

if you add a beefquake and MANami together...that is close to the experience of a mantasm.....

although a mantasm may just be too overwhelming and powerful to be served w/ anything.
