OK, so I was advised that I should supplement my protein intake during marathon training....and the advice I got was to drink a protein supplement every day, gradually building up my protein intake to triple what would otherwise be normal...in other words consume as much a 120 g of protein a day at the peak of my marathon training. Does this sound like a good idea?

Upping intake might be fine, especially if your building muscle, or need repair during the training. Use a decent protein calculator online. 120g might be high for you.

I must have missed this when it was first posted, so sorry for the delayed response.

Especially after a hard workout, it's a good idea to take on a mix of 4:1 carbohydrate:protein to aid in muscle regeneration to repair the damage caused by the workout.

In particular, you want BCAA's (Branched-Chain Amino Acids), and a great source for this is whey protein, or the protien in eggwhites. You can purchase pre-mixed 4:1 blends such as Accelerade (and others, that's the one whose name springs to mind).

Of course that's not going to be anywhere near 120 extra grams.

I don't think you'd be running any big risks taking on a little extra protein like this -- as long as you don't overwhelm your digestive system with protein (and 120 grams will come nowhere near that), you'll just metabolize any extra for energy.

For a long time I've been having one "scoop" of whey protein every morning (about 80 grams) just to make sure I've got plenty.

120 is fine. it's a bit more than I take in these days - that's what I took in when I was doing bodybuilding.

come to think of it, that was close to my target when I was building my Twins.

120 will not put you in the danger zone for kidney problems - and if you're hungry, 120 grams of protein will make sure you are NEVER HUNGRY AGAIN.

Plus you'll probably have gas issues. Don't be surprised if this happens.

Other than that, it's always advisable to have a quantity of protein when you're training hard - you need to re-build the right kind of muscle fiber.

btw - make sure it's 120 grams of LEAN protein. Otherwise, you'll be building an aerobic engine with an enormous butt.

lean = turkey, chicken, buffalo, whey, etc.

I messed up -- I remembered the number "80", but that's 80 calories, which is only 20 grams of protein. So I'm only increasing my normal amount by 20 grams.

I have been trying different suplements, I totally dislike the whey protein taste!! I cannot find a whey protein powder that agrees with me.

I did find Kashi Vanilla protein shake to be pretty decent, offering 29g of protein with 2 scoops and 1 cup of skim milk, the sugars in it are maltese, not corn based and the taste is good. But very hard to find in supermarkets. Carried by Wegman's but that market is about 30 minutes drive from my house. Trader Joe's used to carry out here in the east coast but they dropped the product due to poor sales.

I do rely on chicken and turkey and edemame and a bit of peanut butter for meals and snacks, but I am not consuming anywhere near 120g of protein, probably more like 40-50 at this point - that is without the Kashi supplement.

As far as the gas part...oh well...drink lots and lots of water, swallow a few fiber tablets and hope for the best!

I have a couple of suggestions to help you up your intake.

Have you tried protein bars? There are about a jillion of them on the market, and they're not all bad. The thing to look for is the presence of High Fructose Corn Syrup (not good for you), and the protein content. Don't worry too much about the fat content, they're usually well balanced for active people.

Here's a tip: the higher the protein content, the fouler the taste. Generally, 20g of protein is about as palatable as they come. Balance makes a couple that don't have HFCS, they're around 15 grams of protein. Also, Zone bars aren't bad - for about 16g of protein. Trader Joe's carries one called "think thin" with no HFCS, 20g of protein, it tastes OK.

Another suggestion: there are drinks which you can buy off the shelf with high protein low carb low fat. EAS makes one you can get at the grocery store (only the chocolate is OK, and only if it's cold), the weight watchers ones aren't bad. I buy stuff online from Advocare, but I don't care for their marketing. Their products are good.

You are not weird for buying nutrition drinks by the way - I hear people talk about this in the triathlon circles. Smetimes people drink several cans of "ensure" before a race.

oh but I don't want to build...I just want proper energy and muscle repair...I am sticking to the Kashi protein shakes for now, they are reasonably flavored and I seem to run better days after I start them.

i recommend WHEY TO GO chocolate bean flavor. It's a powder that comes in cans and blends well with soy milk and bananas for a great tasting shake with up to 25 grams of protein per drink (in.c soymilk and fruit)

i'm posting late too but this is always a good topic.

too much protein will be hard on the kidneys indeed.
intake should be based on your size and the kind of activity you are doing, plus the kind of muscle you want to build, or if you are just maintaining or healing from activity.
the protein i use and like (even the taste and the way it mixes) is a brand made by magnum neutraceuticals (sp?), vanilla flavoured.
i use a scoop of it and like it with milk rather then water.
i aslo use a scoop of glutamine with it, along with a banana and omega oils in a power shake.
sometimes i use the glutamine by itself before strenuous activity.
glutamine is also good for the guts: intestinal walls, stomach. it supposingly heals ulcers, but i wouldn't know, never had any.
what i do find is that i don't feel any muscle ache or exhaustion when took it.
the glutamine i use is by the same company as the protein powder... a bit pricey tho, but high grade and easily assimilated by the body.
i know this because i can feel the results. :-)
