This is the time of year when I start getting really excited about the con and bug all the people around me who cannot figure out why I love it so much. Well, screw them. I live in Los Angeles, where (in my experience) fandom tends towards suckage. Old, stodgy and unfriendly if you haven't known them since the 18th century.
But Norwescon does it right.
So, I want to be more involved with the con, since I adore it so much. But being 1000 miles away makes it hard to really involve myself on any regular basis. Any suggestions on how I can remedy this, short of moving back to Seattle? I've tried for a couple years now to get on panels (no success there yet, but I'll keep trying).

Re: Howdy
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 4:27 PMActually, I've tried to be a lot of help via e-mail with scheduling and stuff. A lot of volunteering can happen without being physically present in Seattle!
NWC is great. I grew up with it. I've been going since #4 and only missed two since then. it's a lot like a huge family I only see once a year.

Wed, February 21, 2007 - 4:38 PMI feel the same way about it, definitely, though I haven't been going anywhere near as long as you have!
Could you please give me some specifics re: helping via email? What sorts of committees and such do you help with? Have they been pretty receptive to you?
And any idea where I could help now? -

Re: Howdy
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 4:53 PMWell, most of what I do is help with scheduling of a small section, the multimedia stuff. I just started pestering them with writing and asking to help.
I'd say start there -- go to the website, find a contact link, send in a note and ask what can you do from over there.
For my own selfish reasons, I'd say pimp it like crazy with people.
And of course, once you're THERE, if you feel like volunteering, I recommend it. I volunteered for tech services years ago and had a great time. Now, my on-site volunteering is all about running workshops and such. We do the "Let's Make a Movie!" workshop, which is lots of fun.

Re: Howdy
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 4:55 PMIf you want to be on panels, the best time to send email is early summer (June). Give a BIO of yourself and what sort of panels you would be interested in. Then if you will fit in with what the program director is planning they will get back to you. The problem most people have is they don't bother contacting the programming department until after all the Pro invites have goon out (late summer). -

Thu, March 22, 2007 - 10:47 AMthanks. In my case, I was in communication with the program director early on and gave as much info about myself and panelling suggestions as I could, but it simply didn't fit with what was programmed. So be it. I'll keep trying. -

Re: Howdy
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 3:51 PMI'm an editor for a Buddhist publisher and I thought it might be interesting to have panels with representatives of various religious and philosophical traditions. Just for example, a panel like that on LOST could be interesting. Or a general discussion on the compatability or lack thereof with science or science fiction and religion.
I'm also pretty well versed on Eastern and Middle Eastern folklore and fantastical fiction. Also, I have an autistic and epileptic son, and I know that atypical neurology isn't exactly rare in fandom, so that's a possible discussion as well. A really great panel I went to a few years ago began as "The Future of Psychology" and very quickly turned into a discussion on Aspergers, Autism, Dyslexia and other related neurological types.
On a less serious note, I'm into contact juggling, though I'm pretty new to that.
Mostly, I was suggesting panels I could help with, but I would, just in general, enjoy seeing discussions of fantasy and scifi outside of the Western European milleu. Not that such discussions don't happen; I'd just like to see more.
