Merchants of Deva and NWC31

The Merchants of Deva regretfully announce that they will not be holding a party at this year's Norwescon.

As you may know, there are several new policies and restrictions the hotel has put on room parties this year. Many of these are based on existing regulations that the hotel has only just this year begun to enforce.

You can find the complete list of room party rules here:
http://www.norwescon.org/documents/nwc31socialevents.pdf

We looked at the new guidelines from every angle, considering every possibility to determine how we could best meet these rules and still bring you the kind of party you've come to expect from us. In the end, there was no way we saw that we could.

We're sorry about the short notice on this, but we were hoping right up until the last minute we'd be able to find a way to make it work. We know you've told us time and again that our party and others like it are a big part of the reason you attend Norwescon, so we apologize to anyone whose travel plans or accommodation arrangements were even slightly based on the expectation of seeing us there.

Initially it looked like there was a strong possibility that we could use the Maxi's Restaurant space for our party, but the final terms from the hotel would have required us to use hotel bartenders and banquet staff instead of our own volunteers. The hotel told us this was due to union requirements, but we have not been able to independently verify this.

This meant we wouldn't really be throwing our own party any more. More importantly, it meant we would have to pay a 'corkage fee' for serving our own alcohol, which would effectively force us to charge for our drinks or charge a cover fee at the door. And we don't intend to do that to you.

By the time the hotel told us this, it was too late to explore other venues. We wish there was another way, but we would rather have no party at all than to have a party that wouldn't live up to our standards.

Don't get us wrong — we love Norwescon, the committee has been nothing but helpful to us, and they have our continued support. We have every intention of finding a way to bring the kind of parties you expect back to Norwescon. Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough time to reach a satisfactory solution this year.

We hope the Doubletree will work with us to find an amicable solution for next year. We've been their loyal customers for well over a decade, renting blocks of rooms, eating at their restaurants, and running up ridiculous bar tabs. We would like to be able to offer them our patronage again in the future.

In any event — have a great time at the con. We will. We'll see you there.

Share ride to / from Portland - Norwescon?

Hello!

I'm looking to share a ride with someone(s) to and from Portland to NorWesCon.

Here's the deal: on the way up we have one grownup and one child in a car seat.
On the way back is two grownups and one child, no car seat (diff child).
Plan to head up about noon on Thursday and come back Sunday afternoon.

Now, I actually have a very nice car. I just can't drive that far very well by myself. I'd be willing to pay all the gas to get someone else to do the driving. If I haven't met you before, we'd have to meet beforehand to know if we can stand each other for some hours.

This is a smoke & drug free trip, I'm allergic.

Thanks!
Betty’s Thank You Memberships

Betty Claar was a dedicated convention planner, former vice-chair, volunteer, and friend to so many people. On October 3, 2007, Betty lost her battle with cancer. Everyone that knew and loved her will miss her very much.

Betty worked very hard to improve Norwescon in many different ways, serving on the convention committee in a number of positions. However, she never forgot the days when she was “just” a volunteer -- one of those very important people that help at the con to make it the great event that it is. One of Betty’s many ideas was to find a way to thank and reward these special volunteers for their efforts.

We plan to honor Betty and her vision during Norwescon 31. Starting this year, the Norwescon ConCom will give a free full membership to next year’s convention to the person that volunteers the most hours on load-in on Wednesday and one additional full membership to the person who volunteers the most hours on load-out on Sunday. This is something Betty wanted to see happen and we hope to make it an annual addition.

So please help Norwescon move in to the hotel on Wednesday and move out of the hotel on Sunday. It will help the convention, you may get a free membership to NWC 32, and all of us will be honoring the memory of Betty.

This is the time of year when I start getting really excited about the con and bug all the people around me who cannot figure out why I love it so much. Well, screw them. I live in Los Angeles, where (in my experience) fandom tends towards suckage. Old, stodgy and unfriendly if you haven't known them since the 18th century.

But Norwescon does it right.

So, I want to be more involved with the con, since I adore it so much. But being 1000 miles away makes it hard to really involve myself on any regular basis. Any suggestions on how I can remedy this, short of moving back to Seattle? I've tried for a couple years now to get on panels (no success there yet, but I'll keep trying).

We've added another part to the workshop, so follow along closely. It's optional, but lots of fun!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Thursday
5:00 PM
Cascade 13
Low Budget Special Effects
Although each of us would love to have a hundred million dollars for the top-of-the-line special effects, the sad truth is that those PowerBall numbers remain as elusive as ever. In lieu of an unspeakable budget, here is a collection of techniques and tricks, including live demonstrations, of some special effects that you can do on a more "dinner-and-a-movie" budget!

Thursday
9:00 PM
Evergreen 1 & 2
Let's Make a Movie: Introduction
In this introduction, see all the movies ever made at Norwescon as a part of this ground-breaking workshop, including hilarious video introductions by the filmmakers. Here's the best place to watch all these movies at once, and behold the genesis of one of the weirdest and funniest workshops ever to be tolerated by Norwescon! Learn about some of the weird and heinous behind-the-scenes stories! Feel free to ask the filmmakers questions afterwards, if they're brave enough to stick around! Be inspired for part 1!

Friday
10:00 AM
Cascade 10
Let’s Make a Movie, Part 1: Plan it!
You were there for part 0, right? Quick! Time travel! In part 1, we go over the plan, figure out the gear, work up a story, write the script, plan the shoot, and pretty much anything else we can think of. That's right, from soup to nuts, we're going to make an entire movie here at Norwescon. This is your chance to be a part of the annual fun and learn how to make a movie on a budget so tiny calling it "shoestring" would be an insult to shoestrings. The key to making a movie, of course, is good planning!

Saturday
10:00 AM
Cascade 10
Let’s Make a Movie, Part 2: Shoot it!
You were there for Part 1, right, where we figured out what we needed and planned this movie all out? Quick! Time travel! In part 2, we shoot like mad weasels, because there's not much time and if we're going to make a movie at light speed, then we have to move like light! So, don't be late, or you'll just see red-shifted versions of us. The key to making a movie, of course, is to get the footage in the can! Or, "box", actually, because we're shooting video. But you know what we mean.

Saturday
6:00 PM
Cascade 10
Let’s Make a Movie, Part 3: Edit it!
Let's make a movie! You were there for Part 2, right, where we shot video like crazy? Quick! Time travel! In part 3, we show you a little about editing, how we put all that crazy footage down and made it into a movie that made some kind of sense. Actually, we hope it makes some kind of sense. We never really know. If you bought a computer within the past two years, chances are excellent that you have more digital video editing power at your fingertips than has ever been subject to the hands of Ordinary People. Learn about using this power for Good. Or Evil. We don't care, because we only use it for Fun. The key to making a movie, of course, is editing.

Sunday
1:00 PM
Evergreen 1 & 2
The Fandance Film Festival
Come one, come all to not only the final show-it-off stage of the Let's Make a Movie workshop, but also the best fen film festival this side of the Waking World. Come marvel at this year's collection of strange, bizarre, and fantabulous shorts! No red carpet, no special lights, no paparazzi to bug you, just pure unadulterated video foolishness for everyone to enjoy. And no limo required!

Sunday morning Amtgard Demo

Join us at 10am on Sunday morning of the convention to see what Amtgard is all about. Members of the local chapters will be giving a demonstration and talking about what Amtgard is up to in the Pacific Northwest.

Amtgard is a non-profit, non-sectarian group devoted to recreating elements of the medieval, ancient, and fantasy genres. The thrust of Amtgard is both recreational and educational, with major group efforts devoted to reconstructions of medieval combat. Amtgard weapons are safe, foam-padded replicas of the real things.

So for Norwescon 30 we are bringing back Norwescon's Casino (on thursday night).

So one of the things I am trying to determine is what Casino style games would people like to see?

Some of the games I'm currently considering are:

Blackjack
Craps
Roulette
Texas Hold'em
Baccarat
Caribbean Stud Poker
Pai Gow Poker

So what other table games would you be interested in playing?

I'm also looking for people who would want to be dealers, so if you have a specific game you would like to deal let me know what game and for how many hours you would be willing to do deal.

Also anyone have a Roulette wheel they would be willing to lend the convention?

I'm the new the department head for Norwescon 30 Special Events. Me and my assistants (Tonya Clark and Peggy Stewart) are looking for ideas, suggestions and volunteers to help make special events “special” once again.

So you may be asking what exactly Norwescon’s special events are:

Casino
Dances
Fashion Shows
Gaming
Lazertag
Masquerade
Medieval Faire
Rocky Horror
Video Rooms

So if you would like to work in any of these departments, or just have good ideas on how to make them "special" please send email to specialevents @ norwescon . org

Thanks

This last weekend we had the elections for Chair and Vice-Chair of Norwescon 30. As a number of you know I decided a while back that I needed a break, so I did not run.

So I would like to offer my congratulations to Tracy Knoedler Norwescon 30 Chairman, and Cheryl Ferguson Norwescon 30 Vice-Chair.

The two of them will be selecting their Executive Team in the next few weeks. They posted this to the Norwescon yahoo groups, and figured I would cross-post it here:

"Cheryl and I will be meeting this week to start developing our Norwescon 30 Executive Team. Anyone interested in being part of the executive team please e-mail Cheryl and I at ctknoedler@aol.com and cheryl_ferguson@mac.com . We would also like to hear from you if you are interested in being a department head so we can pass on the names to our Executive Team.

As Cheryl and I will be meeting this Wednesday and Friday the sooner the better would be great. Send those e-mails and let us know why you want to be part of the team.

Tracy"

This'll be our seventh workshop this year. Holy crap!

We've done:

     "Intergalactic Bad Astra"
     "The Matricks"
     "Run Frodo Run"
     "Ultimate Survivor: NWC"
     "Con of the Dead"
     "CSI: Norwescon"

Ryan and I were chatting a couple of weeks ago about some other possibilities for the 2006 show.

What were your favorites? What did you like? What would you want to see more of?

Welcome to the Norwescon tribe

I couldn't find one and I think there's enough people who attend and want to talk about and plan for the various Norwescons that it warranted a tribe.

Plus, we can upload pictures!

Please feel free to pimp this tribe to any and all fen you know. It's public and anyone can invite anyone else to join -- ain't no big thang.

As far as moderating goes, I figure my job is to provide the space and let it evolve in accordance with the folks who are a part of it. Although I doubt it'll happen, if anything gets REALLY out of hand, I'll intervene. I won't smite unless it'll be funny, though.

Enjoy!
