update on new orleans circus scene

I’m new to tribe and I’m trying to get the word out about what’s going on now in New Orleans for Circus Arts. The scene revolves around the Whirly Bones Circus Collective. We have a large studio just outside the french quarter and we offer free skill shares in circus arts and aerial classes five days a week! We offer hooping, acro, conditioning, juggling, yoga and clown lab. For fifteen dollars a month (yes, I said fifteen dollars) members can train and teach in the space. Next month the collective is putting on a showcase which includes acro-balance, aerial, juggling and more. Aurora Aerial is also based out of the space and will be holding auditions for an autumn run of shows on September 1st. There is a new aerial yoga class at Swan River Yoga Shala uptown as well. After tomorrow night were moving it to Thursdays at 8:30. I hope to see many of you tomorrow.

Side note. last week one of our regulars didn't come in because she thought a car was being broken into outside of the warehouse. After Bannigan left I went out for a smoke and saw a simular scene. When apporached them the two men told me it was thier van and the keys where locked inside. And indeed they where, right there in the ignition. So false alarm there.

2nd side note.... I also didn't get shot by car thieves.

So after talking to a few of the regulars, and knowing Rich's current conflicts, what do you all(the hosts and the regulars) think about moving it to Thursday night?

There are a lot of other skills jams on Wednesday nights plus Rich's yoga class....

I can speak for myself, Dana, and Kari that it Thursday night would work better.

Of course, it is all up to our most gracious hosts.

Isaac will be running this week's jam. everything else is as usual about this week.

I will no longer be running Wednesday night aerial jams. there is good news and bad news causing this. the bad news is my troublesome shoulders. the good news is that 7th Heaven Yoga in Berkeley is offering me a 5:30pm to 7pm intermediate/advanced acrobatic yoga class on Wednesday nights. I'm also now teaching yoga at Vulcan space #1 on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Thursdays at 6:30pm. Wednesday times in flux. So, lots of yoga, much less aerial. I'll post more about yoga later.

I keep getting a lot of the same questions so here's a FAQ for the event:

Facilities: we have one silk at 22' with no obstructions and a crash mat, one silk at 22' with some obstructions above 16' and a very nice trapeze at 16'. this is a large raw warehouse space with concrete floors.

What to Bring: clothes that won't get caught on the fabric but that will protect you from fabric burns. baggy is bad. jeans are bad. covering your knees to prevent burns behind the knees is good. pants should be no longer than your calf (or rolled up to there) or they can get caught on the fabric. for those not afraid to look a little silly, a unitard is functionally ideal.

Address: 1190 28th Street, Emeryville, CA at the corner of 28th and Magnolia, entrance through the blue door on Magnolia St.
Yes, we're right on the border of Oakland and may actually be in Oakland, but if you tell MapQuest/Google Maps/ Whatever that we're in Oakland you're going to be sent to the WRONG place.

Time: Unless posted otherwise, the jam/skillshare starts at 8:30pm and generally runs until 10:30 or 11pm. Yoga, when offered, starts at 7pm and runs until 8:15pm. DON'T BE EARLY. I'm usually doing something beforehand and will not be ready for you if you arrive before the posted start time.

Who is welcome? All levels welcome. I am generally happy to teach the basics and we often have other experienced practitioners who are happy to do so as well. More experienced folk generally practice their routines and teach each other new tricks.

Cost: I want to make this affordable to everyone so I ask only a $5 donation. If you are really too poor for the $5 (perhaps living in a circus bus and dumpstering your food) you are welcome to nab me some fruit as a donation instead. when i offer yoga as well, there is an additional $5 donation for the yoga class.

Misc: sometimes we play around and work on contortion or fire eating/breathing and assorted other circus or acrobatic skills.

Hello, friends. I am sorry to say that I just cannot afford the time to run this event this or next month. My work over the last couple of months with the Dreamtime Circus coupled with current non-aerial projects with Copper Lantern Fire Theater and the Lucid Dream Lounge has me way behind with the work that pays the bills and I just can't afford to do this right now.

Thank you all so much for coming for yoga and aerial practice and I look forward to resuming in August.

In case any of you are reading this message for the first time, yoga is an hour-hour and a half focussed on centering, stretching, and warming up for aerial without making you too tired to work in the air. Special attention paid to shoulders, hips, hamstrings, and back bends.

The Shipyard Berkeley Art Space Shut Down!

OK< as many of you know by now the Shipyard, Jim Masons' zero emissions off grid art space and alt/power research facility has been shut down for building code violations. In Berkeley. Can you hear the laugh track? The City of Berkeley shut down the zero emissions art and tech facility for a building code violation. Did you hear it that time?

So. It's time to RAIN DOWN LIKE DEATH. Roll out the machines of death, we are going to war. Again. It seems like we have to do this from time to time. I think it may be good. Get a little exercise, lube the cannons, oils the door on the war room. But man, there is no funnier templet. It's like a Rodney Dangerfeild joke set up: "So the City of Berkeley shuts down the zero emissions art space, no respect I tell ya, we artists get no respect...."

First thing is first, we are going to win. So lets not make this too humiliating for them. We do not need to rub it in or gloat or whatever. We will have to continue to see these people at the coffee shop and someone has to be there to fix the streets and take out the garbage and stuff. So remember that everyone has their place, even city officials who say that a steel shipping container is a fire hazard because it's not a building material, so it's not a building and can't be built and not "habitable", even for someone to store some simple hand tools and a few puppets. That, of course, is illegal. You can go to jail for that.

So let us refer to the following phrase and spread it around:

Make puppets in a shipping container, go to jail. art and alt/ fuel is illegal in Berkely www.theshipyard.org

Build a hydrogen car that runs on garbage, go to jail. art and alt/ fuel is illegal in Berkely www.theshipyard.org

That should be made into a bumper stickers. Someone get on that...

So the actuality that is happening here is the same one that happens elsewhere: they *say* they like what your doing. They *say* that they just want you to comply. You ask what is needed to comply, they tell you to do this and that. You do it. Then, there is this other thing. And now that they thought about it for a while, there is this other thing and what about that thing and I forgot that thing. Pretty soon you start adding it all up and you would have to spend twice as much then if you were building a brand new building. And since you can get a loan to build a brand new building on the make art out of junk business model (last time I checked) well then you just walk away in disgust.

But not this time. There are too many of us. If corralled against a common enemy, well there is certainly no obstacle that we can not overcome. there are a hundred thousand of us that have gone to Burning Man. And that's just Burning Man. That's not all the other artists and all the other people who champion our liberties and who have stores of distain for beurocracy to no end other then mediocrity. There are more people in Oakland California who write the word "artist" on their tax returns then any other city.

So. First thing is first. You fire a shot across the bow.

Copy and send this to your lists far and wide.

Then, let these people know that you think it's funny that the facility that build a car that runs on garbage last month that has zero emissions got shut down for a building code violation. You could say something like: "Stop it, your killin' me....". But the comedy is too rich. Here is a list of the comedians:

In the end the emotion that really come forward here is embarrassment. You should be embarrassed. Berkeley is a stantion of hope in a world gone mad, and that they are pulling the endless list of things to make it safe like Disneyland thing is intolerable. I will now sum up what has happened in a few short sentences:

Shipping containers are not a rated building material. Like sheetrock, for example. Since they are not a building material, you can not build with them as a raw material without proving that they a structurally sound. Like, that they will not crumble to dust or twist like a pretzel in an earthquake. They need engineering calculations to abide by a certain standard. And they need to be fire rated. 5/16 thick steel needs to be proven that it is a 2 hour fire wall. Basically, they want to not have any liability. Just in case metal can catch fire or building containers twist into pretzels or turn to dust or something. Oh yea, they also don't like our illegal kitchen which is a sink and a stove in a corner stacked up and not hooked up to anything. They claim that all the work was done without any permits. True. But you can not get a permit. The electrical is done far beyond any code, there is no safety hazard. But it's unsafe, because it doesn't have a permit. And the shipping containers are unsafe, because they don't have a permit. And the bathroom is unsafe. Anything without a permit is unsafe. Here is a communication I had with the City Planning Manager:

Your title on you email sig-file is City Planning Manager, does the city of Berkeley have any plans for a location that would attract a place like the shipyard, or are things like the Shipyard not something that you have plans to try to attract? Has the city any plans for an 'art zone' or something? Is there any information along these lines that we do not have?

It will help us in our re-organization. There are many of us that are Berkeley residents who love it here and wish to stay, but maybe moving to Oakland would be a better idea. We really thought that Berkeley would want a zero emissions art production place that makes steam powered Victorian Recreational Vehicles, and we still do. Things likely should have gone down differently, sure. But it was all a great improv. We are happy for the time we spent there, but if you could take a moment of your time and either quell my thinking in this area or maybe shed some light on some information that I don't have it would be greatly helpful in this tuff time for us.

So there it is right there.... life safety. Notice there is no extra information or any nudge twards cooperation or whatever. Just follow the law. It's written down in this book. Read it. You ask them what they want you get referred to a book that you can not read: the code book. You ask them what their intention is they say that they just want to make sure everything is safe. They string you along and make you write it all down and submit it, then they shoot it full of holes and make it impossible.

It makes you wonder if there is any anselary agenda? And the fact that Joan has shut down so many art spaces makes me wonder if she's just not out to get the art spaces. I wonder if she's a patron? I wonder what her aspirations were as a student? Maybe this is her way a being an art critic? If she doesn't like soemone's work she makes them leave Berkeley? That would at least be funny, no?

There is no way to get a permit to build something with an unrated building material. So the building department needs to do a building material "equivalent". Compare it to something else. Easy. But they chose not to. Instead, they want us to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars paying engineers to 'test' shipping containers for seismic load. Ridiculous. The fire stuff is nothing, but without the containers being legal, we can't get an electrical permit. So that's the fire thing. It's all really just one thing, actually.... it comes down to the following questions:

Is a shipping container a reasonable place to store puppets? Put a table and weld some junk together? Make a steam powered car? Build a wind sculpture? Build a gasifier the goes in the bed of a pick-up truck that burns garbage and propels the vehicle with zero emissions? Is a shipping container a great solution to a million little problems?

Yes of course it is. Is it a good place to store things? Yea. It's metal. It can't catch on fire. They are air tight, so even if I fire happens in one, you just close it. No air. Duh. And welding in a metal building seems pretty smart. Duh. For steam power and things under pressure, metal walls.... seems pretty safe. Mobile, flexible. And here is the kicker: they're green. They already exist. You don't need to manufacture anything. Nothing to buy, no power spent building them. they exist. They are here. It's a building with a door that you pick up with a forklift and throw on the bed of a truck.

But they are not a building material recognized by the City of Berkeley. At this time. Please, let us bring that time to a close. Please help the City of Berkeley through this uncomfortable actualization that a building container is their friend. They may need a little hand holding, and maybe something firmer down the line.

In the end, the comedy is brutal. There are basicly no buildings on the site, and they shut us down for not having a building permit. I wonder how many injuries were sustained at Berkekely city hall in the last 6 years? There have been no injuries at the shipyard at all.

Please feel free to contact the City of Berkeley and gently let them know that you support the Shipyard. And that you support art for all purposes. If they won't listen to logic, then our next step is performance art. Which can be quite fun, as you well know.....

Yoga and Aerial this Wednesday May 16th

Yoga at 7pm, Aerial starts at 8:30pm.
Please arrive at 7pm for yoga, or anytime between 8:30 and 9:30pm for aerial. Aerial runs anywhere from 10pm to 11pm depending upon the night.
$5 donation requested to help pay for equipment and maintenance, but no one turned away for lack of funds. Food gifts, particularly fruit, happily accepted in lieu of $.

In case any of you are reading this message for the first time, yoga is an hour-hour and a half focussed on centering, stretching, and warming up for aerial without making you too tired to work in the air. Special attention paid to shoulders, hips, hamstrings, and back bends.

Aerial is a skill share, with more experienced aerialists trading tricks and tips and teaching the basics to beginners. All skill levels enthusiastically welcome. Please wear tights or a unitard if you have such. Long and/or baggy pants do not work well for the fabric. If you have any questions, please call me or post here.

NO PRACTICE APRIL 25th

I will be performing with the Dreamtime Circus (www.dreamtimecircus.org) on April 28th and 29th and holding the jam that week is just too much for me to deal with. We'll possibly be back on the next week but there is a chance May 2nd won't happen either as I may be away for Beltane festivities.

Wednesday, March 14th, 1190 28th St., West Oakland:

7pm-8pm Yoga for Aerialists (tailored to the skill level of those who attend)
8/8:30pm till we quit: the usual Aerial Jam / Skill Share

At least one silks rig and one trapeze available, though no crash mat for the trap. Feel free to bring your own equipment, we've got a ladder and up to 22' high to rig.

As always, no one turned away for lack of funds, but $1-$5 donations are very welcome and helpful for us to maintain the equipment.

Aerial InterPlay Performance Class

Greetings aerial tribe folks,

My partner and I are excited to offer another Aerial InterPlay series, this time with an emphasis on performance techniques. This class is a unique combination of aerial dance with the technique of InterPlay - improvisational dance, storytelling and vocals. I think it's a very exciting combination and haven't seen anyone else in the Bay area doing this kind of integration.

No previous experience in aerial work or InterPlay is required. If you're a performer or interested in performing, I think you'll find some engaging and thought-provoking material - and I hope you'll also have a lot of fun!

Elizabeth Mendana, MFA, is a member of the InterPlay-based Wing It! Performance Ensemble in Oakland, CA and is an international InterPlay leader and performer. She is versed in dance, theatre, and stage wisdom with a special gift for caring about people and art at the same time. The San Francisco Chronicle has called her dancing "Stunning" and "Hypnotic".

Theron Shaw moved to the Bay area from Seattle, WA in August 2005. He is an avid teacher, student and performer of InterPlay, modern dance, contact improvisation and aerial dance, and is a member of the WingIt! Performance Ensemble, an improvisational movement, music and storytelling company based in Oakland, CA. He recently played the part of Ariel in Shakespeare's The Tempest, and is currently performing in the Active Arts production of Dragonwings.

Yoga and Aerial This Wednesday

Hello everyone,

It is nearly Wednesday again and time for the regular Aerial Jam. Thanks to Reggie's masterful work, we now have my full-time trapeze for use in addition to the silks rig. Please bring your own equipment though if you have it. We' can always rig more.

So, here's the time schedule for this week:

7:15pm - 8:15pm: Ashtanga-based Vinyasa with Rich
My pre-aerial yoga is specifically geared to get you warmed up for aerial work and contains special shoulder and back stretches and splits.

8:30pm until we quit: Our regular Aerial Jam
Trade tricks with other performers or learn silks for the first time. Trapeze instruction may be available depending upon who comes. I'm too much of a beginner with the trapeze to be teaching y'all much of anything. This event is what we make it.

$1-$5 donation requested, but no one turned away for lack of funds.

Come join me for an hour or so of vigorous ashtanga based vinyasa before aerial practice this week. An hour of yoga will provide an excellent warm-up and stretching before your aerial practice and play.

Please bring your own mat if you would like to join us for yoga. I only have one extra mat.

So, this week:
7:15pm to 8:15pm yoga, 8:30m until we quit for aerials. I will be teaching yoga before aerials next week as well and depending on how people like this, I may do it on a regular basis from now on.

Oakland Aerials Needs A Ladder

In order to rig at our highest ceiling height we need a 24-28 foot extension ladder. Purchased new with tax and shipping or truck rental this will cost us about $250-$315. Anyone know where we can get a used ladder AND a way to get that used ladder to the Instar werehaus in West Oakland? Craigslist is lovely but if I do find an appropriate ladder I have no way to get it.

Hello everyone,

After careful contemplation and review of your responses I have decided to hold the Community Aerial Jam on Wednesdays in 2007. I have also decided to hold the Jam regardless of RSVPs. If no one shows I will just read or meditate. RSVPs are still very much appreciated, however. If for some reason I need to cancel I will post here with as much notice as I can. I advise you check here before just showing up.

Start time will be at 8:15pm to allow me time to get home from yoga, though I may make the start time earlier if my schedule changes. PLEASE DO NOT BE EARLY.

I haven't actually been to an aerial jam yet. I sort of got out of the aerial thing when I was busy with moving, and now that that's over, I've signed up for a Thursday night class at hoh in berkeley.

There's no class this week, though, so I'd love to come along to the jam, as would some other friends who are in the same class, I'd imagine.

Also, I have a rig (tissu, pretty long) I can bring if there's room for another.

Aerial Jam RSVPs

Hello wonderful flying creatures.

Here is the new way I am going to run whether or not to have practice. I need y'all to RSVP.

From now on each Friday I'll post a topic for the jam on the upcoming Thursday confirming whether or not I will be offering to host. Please reply by Wednesday if you are coming. With a critical mass of 2 RSVP's I will hold practice. We can also discus potentially using the space on Monday or Wednesday in addition or instead of Thursday. I will most likely be offering to host three Thursdays a month.
