Careful out there

Last night a friend was held up by gun point near the Whole Foods in Adams Point. The police told her that it's been happening quite often over the last week. The guy drives a janky Jeep Cherokee and stops people to ask for directions to the hospital.

Fortunately, she's OK, but shaken up.

Also, there have been some stickups in the North Oakland area between College and Telegraph. One I heard about was a woman who was walking with her child in a stroller was held up.

Keep your wits about you everybody.

Why do you feel it's sensationalism?

        because its pointless

        either accept your circumstances

or move the fuck out of 'dangerous' oakland!

i really have NO patience for people trying to warn me about oakland
this is where i choose to live, and will continue choosing to live indefinitely.
i dont need to hear about a car jacking

How is it sensationalism? Stuff happens and ignoring it isn't a good idea.

I wasn't warning anyone about big, bad Oakland. I live here too. In a neighborhood less safe than Adams Point. And I choose to live there too.

I know several people on this tribe live in/near Adams Point and wanted to point out that there is an increase in armed robberies in the neighborhood. How is that sensationalism?

BTW, it wasn't a carjacking. People are being held up while walking in the neighborhoods where they live.

And I don't blame Oakland, I blame the economy.

I assume you already know that Adam's Point is not that safe a neighborhood, especially after dark, and that the (relatively) well-off folks who shop at whole foods are an irresistible target, and the pressure of the current economy is making more folks desperate. Our group has lived in neighborhood for 41 years, and everybody in the group has a story about a robbery, a break-in, a purse-snatching.

Take a look at the security guards at the Adam's Point Whole Foods. They are mostly under 30, they are in great shape, and they carry guns

A coworker of mine was stabbed in the hand with a screwdriver by a car jacker while parking at Whole Foods.

I was mugged and abducted at gunpoint in Fremont. After wards we heard that the muggings were a regular thing at that grocery. We were the least bloody of about a dozen female victims.
        I had fought back.

I wish we had known the muggings were happening. I don't think spreading/soundiing an alarm is a bad thing.
That's part of the good of community

<The guy drives a janky Jeep Cherokee and stops people to ask for directions to the hospital. >

That's not being sensationalist, that's providing information that could be really really helpful to someone.

Reporting what happens aint sensationalism. it's keeping things in check, giving friends a heads up. it's not like robyns posting was peppered with 'code' words, race or class baiting, or scapegoating groups of people. At least the cops were called.
Oakland is rough and there are pockets of less rough and more rough, but it's important to keep your wits about you, be aware of your environment, etc. And you'd be wise to do that in Montclair or the Marina too.

when I was mugged in Oakland near Lake Merritt in 1991, the cops told me that there had been a recent rash of such muggings in the neighborhood for a few months that they knew of. I asked him if he ever thought that giving the community a head's up about it might have made us all a bit more cautious...he said yes. I'd agree. If I knew it might be more dangerous than usual in my hood, I'd make a point to be with a friend or two... which may be enough to prevent a crime like a mugging or carjacking more than if it is just me solo, you never know.

being made aware is always a good option.
what you do with that information is up to you.

The funniest thing about this whole thread is the notion that the economy has anything to do with robbery and violence in Oakland.........what a hoot. So this jackoff who is robbing people was ostensibly laid off from his job and turned to crime..........I am laughing my ass off.

There haven't been any jobs in Oakland for years............who the fuck are you kidding.

These miscreants grow up selling drugs, living a thugs life, and committing one crime after another. About the only thing the economy has to do with this might be that they have to pull a few more robberies to keep their lifestyle up.........because the yuppies who fund their lavish lifestyle have less disposable income to be taken from them.......

Oh poor Oakland..........victim of the economy.....ha

so i'm late to the conversation, but thankful robyn has shared this information. awareness is an all important life skill. we could probably all use a reminder (tanked economy or not) to take note of the surroundings, people, energy, etc.
