you seen these guys? they wear blue and walk around doing absolutely nothing at all but saying hello to people. i gather they're supposed to be some kind of security something or other, but they seriously do NOTHING but say hi and check out my ass on my morning walk to work.
they walk around in pairs, shooting the shit. who's paying their salary?
anyone know the deal?

Re: what's up with the rent-a-cop types uptown/downtown/by the lake?
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 7:07 PMwow. now that you mention it, i notice that they are EVERYWHERE in downtown oakland.
i wonder if it's a facade to make it look like more people are watching the area.
i say facade because they hardly look capable to handle a "situation". first, they'd need to put down the coffee cups, bagel, etc. and then there's that whole awareness thing...seems unlikely if you're engrossed in chit chat.
anyone know who the blue rent-a-cops are? -

Re: what's up with the rent-a-cop types uptown/downtown/by the lake?
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 2:51 PMOddly enough in New York city the cops spend most of their time standing around. And there are tons of them. And crime has gone down and even in this economy doesn't seem to be spiking too intensely. So maybe there's something to having people stand around looking somewhat official but not actually doing anything but keep an eye out, and not requiring the pay or training of an Oakland Police officer.

Wed, August 5, 2009 - 3:17 PMI've actually seen the rent-a-cops in Rockridge detain people in handcuffs until the OPD shows up.

Re: what's up with the rent-a-cop types uptown/downtown/by the lake?
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 2:17 PMFunny you should mention this atom, I finally pulled my head out of my ass and asked one a while ago, just haven't been on tribe in a while. There's an association of businesses/companies in the uptown/lake merritt/downtown area that pays their salary.
It's just creepy. They have "interns" now, too, who wear shirts that actually say Intern (and something else, I don't remember) on the back. I've seen them cleaning up trash and the grates around trees on the sidewalks, etc.
I'm sure it's an attempt at keeping out the "riff-raff" and trying to make Oakland look a bit more presentable, and I'm sure there's a much better way those resources could be spent, seeing as how keeping out the riff-raff just means they go somewhere else and results in high-crime pockets. Doesn't address the root of the problem but at least the Suits in uptown get to feel a little safer. -

Recent? The only riots in Oakland for quite awhile were the ones in reaction to Oscar Grant's murder. you think some security guards downtown would have been able to influence that at all? -
