Re: Bay Celtic Music and Dance Festival Sat Feb 21 Oakland Veterans Hall
Sun, February 15, 2009 - 6:55 PMOn a positive note.....
drunken irishmen don't have sideshows........so the mayhem factor will be low in comparison to the typical gathering of 3 or more people in Oakland -

Mon, February 16, 2009 - 1:07 PMHey Tomcat
If memory serves...........they have Nascar events on privately owned racetracks...........and I don't think there has been a single shooting at a Nascar event...........
Occasionally a dude gets killed in a wreck............but hey
I don't need to explain the difference to you do I...................
you felt stupid when you made the comparison but you just couldn't resist -

Re: Bay Celtic Music and Dance Festival Sat Feb 21 Oakland Veterans Hall
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 8:54 PMIf sideshows were given a public space to perform, say, at a raiders tailgate, or on the oakland army base, like drifting was, there would be a lot less carnage in oakland.
it worked for the LA sheriffs in curtailing illegal street racing. it worked for the import tuners in the mid/late 90's to organize their street races and car shows in san jose. it worked for all those fat old white guys in the 30's in the south- the precursor to NASCAR
it worked for drifting comps in the deep south in the late 90's too.
all these things were illegal and chased out of thestreets then became assimilated into the greater culture, and sanitized for mass consumption. sydeshows should have The same opportunity.
Think of it as harm reduction.
Give em a space, make it public, charge admission, categorize the competitions, attract sponsors. make some money for Oakland. it won;t take much.
belive me, I am no fan of car culture, but it is the dominant paradigm these days, so it needs to be addressed int he proper channels. only enforcement hasn;t worked all that well.
I do not feel it is a stupid comparo. get it off the streets, regulate it, make it attractive to invstors and sponsors and oakland will have a goldmine on its hands.
there is still street racing, street drifting, and renegade car shows all over the country. but it's been greatly curtailed, the harm has been reduced.
As a capitalist, I thought you'd see the opportunity .

Re: Bay Celtic Music and Dance Festival Sat Feb 21 Oakland Veterans Hall
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 2:42 PMDon't know whether it was appropriate to post in "Discussions", instead of "Events", but there's a lot of great music on the lineup if you like Celtic tunes. I've seen Tempest, Avalon Rising, and Cullan's hounds multiple times and they all do excellent Celtic-infused rock mixed with more traditional tunes, and Siamsa are great dancers.
Don't know if my schedule will allow me to attend, but I hope a lot of folks do. -

Re: Bay Celtic Music and Dance Festival Sat Feb 21 Oakland Veterans Hall
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 3:51 PMHa,
a good buddy of mine was the director of Alumni affairs at a prestigious private college in the midwest. They had an annual St. Patrick's day thingy as this city has quite a large Irish population. He asked me to recommend an Irish band for the event........something contemporary for a change. Having seen Black 47 a few months before I suggested he contact them. He did..............
So on the anointed day there was a huge crowd waiting for the band to play..............there was beer served at this event and I noticed couple of distinct groups up near the stage.................two different groups of guys...........
Now I'll tell you that in this town there is a large racetrack.......which attracts people from all over Europe............including a fair number of british....................
So the band begins to play..........and the first song is.........you guessed it.............Time to Go
the two groups of guys began jumping up and down to the music........and making threatening gestures at each other.......Jimmy looked at me with a what the hell look......I just shrugged my shoulders...............I still hadn't figured it out..........
And then all hell broke loose............
blood was spilled, the police were summoned..........
Jimmy didn't lose his job over this...........but it came close................and needless to say I was in the doghouse for a while. Jimmy's wife came over the next day to give me a piece of her mind............I just buried my head in my hands.........I could say nothing.............. -

Re: Bay Celtic Music and Dance Festival Sat Feb 21 Oakland Veterans Hall
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 4:13 PMDoes this story have a point?
BTW, I'm a big fan of Black 47 - caught them at the first of the Celtic Festivals that went on for a few years down at Fort Mason in SF, back in 92 or 93. Seen them a few times since, never quite as good as the first where their Irish/Hip-hop style caught everyone by surprise...

Re: Bay Celtic Music and Dance Festival Sat Feb 21 Oakland Veterans Hall
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 9:18 PMyeh it's those damn irish. they always get into fights. broken irish homes, drinking all the time. They don;t know how to act around cultured middle class white english originated ppls.
oh i'm sorry.
I really do like black 47. great band. but that violence they incite with their people makes me feel sorry for them.
