All objects have their own natural dynamics. A ball will roll down a sloped surface. A hoop will settle flat on a floor.
A block, however, doesnt ''want'' to do much, other than sit still.
This is my solo 'block and ball' section from a show called "Anomalies", as performed in August at the 2005 Circus Space Cabaret in Crawley (UK) year.

I'm sharing this because blocks were an interesting challenge for me, and I like how a lot of the material came out. This piece forced me to learn body popping, liquid, fixed-point and other movement techniques. The routine changed a lot since its beginning 2 years back... this particular version was actually directed by Jea9 during one of her visits to London (2 days before the show, we changed all of the music, the setup, and 50% of the material)
It still needs work. Feedback and crit much appreciated.

Re: [Video] Blocks and Balls
Sat, December 10, 2005 - 1:44 PMOh my!
Fine work. So much to say: good audience-cueing and segmentation, excellent extension of illusions both visual (geometric) and mental (object intention/motive), and great staging. More, but I'll have to think on it.
Haven't seen such complete focus on the object since Moschen - particularly his "sticks," which I think is far more impressive than his crystal work. (Can anyone put that on-line?)
Congratulations!

Sat, December 10, 2005 - 1:51 PMActually, not that I have done much work to find it, but how does one go about getting In Motion, or anything else done by Mr. Moschen? I have seen the web site, and the behind the scenes footage... but little of his work.

Re: [Video] Blocks and Balls
Sun, December 11, 2005 - 2:18 PMFinally got a chance to check this out- nice work! But I hate you because now I want cigar boxes. Grrrr...
Sorry I can't give you any professional feedback, but I'm not yet fully professional. I didn't find anything to criticize, and the most notable bit for me was how you moved within your outfit. A very ethereal tone was conveyed. I also loved the contrast between the dark stage and neutral costume colors and the vibrant colors of the objects. It gave due emphasis to the objects rather than the manipulator which I find in turn actually makes the manipulator more interesting rather than the other way around.
May I ask what kind of balls you used?

Re: [Video] Blocks and Balls
Sun, December 11, 2005 - 3:54 PMBabache 100mm - orange, because orange balls make you a better juggler. -

Re: [Video] Blocks and Balls
Mon, December 12, 2005 - 12:51 PMStrange, they look smaller than 100mm which is why I asked.
Thanks!
(I haven't decided on a color yet- anything but white) -

Re: [Video] Blocks and Balls
Tue, December 13, 2005 - 4:23 AMchoose orange.... looks nice. Or green! They both look really good with black, and that's usually the color at the background of any stage :)

Tue, December 13, 2005 - 7:09 AMRyan,
I really enjoyed the isolation, immobility and pointe fixée work. I'm a mime who is new to contact juggling and related manipulations-- so those are the only techniques I have mastered-- and you did those so well. -
