Re: Video Links
Wed, April 19, 2006 - 1:45 AMof course it counts!
A unicycle is an object, just like a skateboard.
ob·ject (ŏb'jĭkt, -jĕkt') pronunciation
n.
1. Something perceptible by one or more of the senses, especially by vision or touch; a material thing.
2. A focus of attention, feeling, thought, or action: an object of contempt.
3. The purpose, aim, or goal of a specific action or effort: the object of the game.
4. Grammar.
1. A noun, pronoun, or noun phrase that receives or is affected by the action of a verb within a sentence.
2. A noun or substantive governed by a preposition.
5. Philosophy. Something intelligible or perceptible by the mind.
6. Computer Science. A discrete item that can be selected and maneuvered, such as an onscreen graphic. In object-oriented programming, objects include data and the procedures necessary to operate on that data.
that link was brilliant, btw.
sooooooo wierd.
I'm starting to get into non-tangible object manipulation, like 2,3 or 5..

Re: Video Links
Sun, April 23, 2006 - 8:16 PMAnd then there's objectless manipulation. Or maybe free-form building bouncing. You decide.
video.google.com/videoplay
and then tack this part onto the end of the URL:
?docid=1867308191445087595&q=David+Belle+rush+hour&pl=true
and after that one, hit the "next" button. Near the end it gets a bit military, but there's some glorious stuff before that. -

Re: Video Links
Mon, May 1, 2006 - 1:11 AM> I feel a little sorry for that kid. I wish he could just have a little natural skill. <
Natural, schmatural. If the kid keeps at it for two or three years he'll be great. What he needs is OBSESSION! What he needs is to get hung up in what he's doing, and not in the impression he thinks he's making by doing it.
If he can't get beyond self-image, he'll drop this soon enough and join the ranks of all those whatever-they-ares that can't get outside themselves. (though it took me until middle age to get there, so maybe I'm missing something)
Talking about very much the same thing with Greg tonight, and how it is a major division in all physical manipulation groups: poi, juggling, martial arts, magic, . . . oooh, magic!
Years ago I was very active in alt.magic.secrets, being concerned with skill development and sharing rather than power trips and secrets. Amazing the number of people who just would not get it!
Maybe we all eventually grow up.
Maybe we don't.
For some, obsession (or total involvement outside the self) is a way to escape pain and anxiety and pressure. It's a way of forgetting what hurts and looking at or becoming one with beauty and wonder. Moby Dick and the bible were my first such escapes, followed by science fiction and historical fantasy. I still have difficulty separating the god who sends bears after children with Robert Heinlein.
Hmm. I believe this more properly belongs in my blog, so I'll put it there, too -

I've seen triangle and box and sphere juggling, and Charley Brown keeps talking about his ten-sided hydraulic-flexing-juggle-space-on-a-flatbed-trailer (for street performing, of course), but this is the first cone juggling I've seen.
