A block, however, doesnt ''want'' to do much, other than sit still.

This is my solo 'block and ball' section from a show called "Anomalies", as performed in August at the 2005 Circus Space Cabaret in Crawley (UK) year.
www.thatballguy.com/videos/RyanBlockBall.mov

I'm sharing this because blocks were an interesting challenge for me, and I like how a lot of the material came out. This piece forced me to learn body popping, liquid, fixed-point and other movement techniques. The routine changed a lot since its beginning 2 years back... this particular version was actually directed by Jea9 during one of her visits to London (2 days before the show, we changed all of the music, the setup, and 50% of the material)

It still needs work. Feedback and crit much appreciated.

The intro is an experiment with the audience involving unusual balancing and immediate feedback from the audience. Most of the show is contact improv based modern dance, but my highlight was Jörg Müller, a French performer who manipulates a windchime in a hybrid of dance and juggling... Not to be missed!
Think 5 object manipluation on arcs he dances through, making music in the redirections for pattern control...

The closing number with mixed ability performer Claire Cunningham made me believe the arm crutches were merely a prop for the grace exhibited in contact dance and aerial partnering... Superb.

I'm trying to get him to write a sequal, even though he didn't write the original book. It's oriented for jugglers, but manip freaks of all kinds will find it interesting.

After 6 years of pushing him, Rhys Thomas let me edit and publish his book on meteors. It's the first and only such in English. I just did the third printing (now all digital), and people keep ordering it. Australia & NZ are centers of interest. I started making props when the book came out, because props sell books. Neither book nor prop are going to do more than allow me to afford a lobster slightly more often.

The other thing is knot throwing, also known as flourish knots or knot juggling. The idea is very simple: you hold a 5' length of very flexible cord, give it a flick, and make a knot in it. I learned from Bruce Cate, aka Mr. String. Over the last twelve years I've developed a small collection of such knots, many from magic books, some from friends, and some I invented. The trick itself is always mildly startling, and falls into the category of things that are "amusing."

Both books are on my web site www.foreworks.com, in the Flaming Sparrow section. If there is any interest here I'll put up a few pages from either, or both.

After breaking up a half-dozen clocks, at the age of twelve I established the world record, unbroken to this very day, for the greatest number of tops spun on the surface of a checker board, the tops then being tossed into the air solely by means of said board, and caught again on that board, after the board is flipped to the other side (backgammon, usually), and remain spinning for at least five seconds. That number is fourteen (14).
This is not a skill that deserves its own discussion group, so here it stays, in Obect Manipulation.

I've been doing research - I'm trying to peice together a History of this thing we do - Ball manipulation, Contact, whatever we call it!! a fair history with everyone's story.

The names Tony Duncan and Eric Baggai crop up regulary, and I know you guys have lived through it being "living fossils" of the american juggling scene. (joking ok)
I would love to hear your stories, and what is this talk you have about an old ija routine video?.
And what about these things:
1) Chinese Baouding balls and palmspinning
2) Camel backing
3) Ancient Chinese/oriental performers body rolling with woven "basket" balls alledgedly inspiration for rastelli and brunn
4) ball manipulation magicians - like there was a report of a magicain doing crystall ball manipulation in 77

5) Francis brunn seems well documented.
6) and of course MM. I hear Much about what moschen said or alledgedly said, and Of course "Light." which my modern standards the technique on the video is not that good, but then I think it was quite something - I don't want to re-open old wounds, but would greatly value hearing what you know about this, the historical content of what was actually going on at the time and before moschen, is needed to put everything into context. (I tried to contact Moschen from the UK but his agent doesn't seem to reply to e-mails!!)

Se please tony, Eric and greg if you're reading - whats your story, and can you recommend places/ people that i can got to to get more info on this?

Many thanks
Drew
