Friends-

Hi again, just wanted to send you all a reminder for my Odissi program on Sat., Feb. 24th to raise money for the Hariharananda Balashram, an orphanage/residential school in Orissa--this is one of a number of initiatives sponsored by Hand-in-Hand USA. As I had mentioned to you in a previous email, this initiative really means a lot to me as a number of children at the orphanage lost their parents in the Super Cyclone that hit Orissa in October 1999.

Please do attend if you are in New York area... and please forward to anyone who may be intersted. If you would like more information about Hand-in-Hand, or would like to send a donation to the organization directly, please visit: www.handinhandusa.org

I wish you well, Sonali/Lara

ODISSI
Odissi dance hails from the eastern state of Orissa. The origins of Odissi dance can be traced back to the 2nd century BC, where it was performed as a daily ritual in the ancient temples of Orissa. While the dance had been
extinct for sometime, it was revived in the 1940s thanks to a gamut of dedicated scholars, historians, Gurus, and dancers. Famous for its lyrical grace and charm, the dance is characterized by its rounded, fluid movements,
as well as the abundance in sculpturesque poses, or bhangis, bearing close resemblance to the relief sculptures of the famous temples in Puri, Konark, and Bhubaneswar , which have nourished the art.
