Geez, it seems like as soon as my kids start to get better, then they get sick again. It's maddening. It seems like we've been going around and around with illnesses since December! Ugh! Am I a bad parent? Do I not feed my kids well enough? Should I be giving them more supplements? We're going through a bottle of First Defense herbs like every other week!
Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Anyone else had sick kids for weeks/months?
Mon, March 6, 2006 - 10:58 AMWe're vegetarian, so I try to avoid fish oils.
I've heard a few people swearing by Apple Cider Vinegar... I really should try that. Of course, that wouldn't work so well with the kids (yukk!) but I should try it for me.
I give them First Defense, which is colloidial silver, olive leaf, and other herbs... it's just friggin' expensive! $15 a bottle, and if I'm giving it to them 3X a day (which would be optimal) then it's a bottle a week! Egads!
I've seen the powdered whole-foods things at Whole Foods... you know, the stuff you mix with milk or juice or whatever... but that stuff is expensive too! And I hate to spend all that money and then find my kids won't drink it.
On the health-topic... do you have good healthcare professionals backing you up? We have a nice pediatrician who is respectful of my non-vaccinating, non-meds decisions... but she's still very Western medicine, so she has nothing to offer in this dept. And we turn to Dr. Randy Martin, who is a classical homeopath/nutritionist/herbalist, but he doesn't see sick kids--he works on getting immune systems built up. But we just don't see him enough, and he doesn't diagnose--he just treats. I wish I could go to one doctor/nurse/whatever for all of our needs... someone with a stethoscope who can tell me if the cough is in their lungs, but will give me herbs/homeopathy/nutrition advice before giving them antibiotics and drugs.
I know Dr. Jay Gordon is awesome--but he's $250 a visit! Not an option for us. -

Wed, March 8, 2006 - 3:30 PMDr. Fleiss, aah, yes. When we lived in Los Feliz, he didn't take our insurance. And now he's just too far away from us.
Thanks for the thought, though! Someone like him would be great! I'd also be really into a naturopath. -

Re: Anyone else had sick kids for weeks/months?
Fri, June 9, 2006 - 9:27 AMDr. Howard Reinstein in Encino was our pediatrician when we lived down there. He was great, wasn't totally knowledgable on all alternative medicines, but enough that he could tell you what would help. He always had an alternative recommendation if you asked him. I highly recommend him, so much so that i still take my two there their well-child visits yealy even though we are an hour away. He's located in Encino.
