What kind of Gothiness are you? Are you a Vampire, Pirate, Believer in Ghosts?
Is it the music, poetry and other now 'forgotten' aspects of being Goth, that attract you?

In short... What makes you want to don the Black Hat with pride?

"the music, poetry and other now 'forgotten' aspects of being Goth"

That about sums it up for me. With a heavy dose of the vampire aspect thrown in for interest.

I suppose I should answer this one too!

I am and always have been a Victorian Vampire Goth, with my nose in a book and music on in the background. Some tidbit on Gentleman Jack hanging round in my head..

Old-school romanti-Victorian-renaissance-Goth, since 1985 (I'd argue even 1984, though I was in middle school and not quite sure what I was doing). All about the period clothing, way before I joined the SCA, both the Victorian and the medieval/ renaissance. Obsessed with ghosts and hauntings, old historical places, forbidden dark and seksi things. A little Wester-Goth too, I dig that. Not into vampires now, but was in my teens and early 20's (though I never much liked Anne Rice at all). Fave movies in late teens/ early 20's were "Lost Boys" (I saw it opening night in the theatre), "Near Dark" (f'n seksi-hot cowboy vamps!) and "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (Gary Oldman & Anthony Hopkins were worth all the other bad acting, not to mention some of the dresses). I really liked books like "Vampire$" and I loved Skipp & Specter's "The Scream" (not about vamps, but hot book), and of course all of Nancy Collins' Sonja Blue vamp series. Got into Vampire: the Masquerade just about when it first came out (I seem to remember playing in 1992... is that right?) and then Werewolf right after that. LARP'd in the mid to late 90's, off and on (Berkeley game, some various Sacto area games). But yeah. All about the darkness and things that creep therein and blood and bats and shadows and lace and smoke and moonlight and autumn and sex and magic and naughty forbidden dark things and gothic horror and intelligently scary stuff and such. I was *never* a mopey Goth (then again, no one was in the 80's; it took the 90's to start that vile little habit). And I was never that into blood & gore as "scary" -- scare me *intelligently*, dammit! Though I did definitely go through a phase of watching every bad direct-to-video horror movie I could get my hands on. And I wrote 2 full supernatural-thriller screenplays, as well as starting a couple others. Haunted all Sacto area Goth clubs since 1985 (Club Gnaw, the Second Level, and so on), only been to SF Goth clubs a couple times, actually. Dated mostly non-goths, funny enough. Closest I got was my ex who was a former comic book illustrator (who worked on Sandman, actually) and with whom I wrote screenplays and watched cheesy horror.

And yes, I'm perfectly happy to NEVER STOP being Gothy and obsessed with all such things, thankyewverymuch. No matter how old I get or where life takes me.

I miss "Club Gnaw." We passed by Country Club Lanes the other night and ... whoa ... talk about flashbacks. Lost most of my nights from 19 to 21 in that place. That's where I spent my 21st b-day ... behind the chain-link. Too bad the guy I was with was 20. I still had fun, though. "The Asylum" at "The Rage" used to be decent ... now it's just another tourist attraction like "Faces" turned into.

I cried when I went there a few years ago to see what they turned our beloved club ("Club Gnaw") into. It was ... *~sniff, tear~* an arcade.

No shit. There's nothing decent left in town, though I will still go to the Asylum every once in awhile just for the music and people-watching (though I admit it isn't as much fun anymore now that I'm not drinking and smoking, but I could make an exception for one night, LOL)...

It would be fun to hit Asylum some night. Same with Death Guild in SF, or something.

I took Percy to "The Asylum" the first time she came up here. We spent the night people watching. Too many muns for my taste, but it still had the flavor. I miss the white sheet on the back wall, though. Wonder what they did with all that wonderful art that we put up there?

I enjoy Club Rapture much more than the Asylum, since it tends to attract fewer emogoths, gravers, and tiny kids who robbed Hot Topic. I'm bad at club in general, though - it's the antisocial hermit thing.

I've just been to lazy to get my butt over to Rapture. Kept meaning to... Yeah. Asylum is painful (the age limit really bollocks things up) but if I drink enough drink specials and sit and watch the lights and the people, and Brian is spinning a good night... it's not too bad.

    I like dead things.

No, seriously. I'm an archaeology major. I like bones and other signs of people who are now dead. I like dead animals. I like fossils, old plants, old books, and everything else that time has forgotten. Dead makes me happy, because it reminds me that so very much happens to us while we're alive, and that finite snapshot we leave behind upon expiring is like a secret key to how we actually lived. We take bits of pottery, bones, and murals, and we try to tell a story about how things really were. It fascinates me.

I need a black dig hat, I think...

Dead makes me happy too. :-) I'm not into the digging and the bones, I'm into the jewelry and clothes and household articles and what they used and did and why... one of my dream vacations is to go to Skara Brae in Scotland and check it out.

I like secrets and solving mysteries. Turning up something in the dirt is so joyous for me... I like things that people forgot or lost. Plus, I love dirt. I like being muddy and filthy, and having other people look at me and say, "You're all dirty." and then I yell, "It's not hurting a damned thing, you prissy snoot!"

So I guess I'm a feral goth... raised by pedestrian wolves out in the forest.

heeheehee. I don't know bollocks about actual archaeology and digs and such, but I get all excited every time there's any sort of early California history find in town or in the foothills. And dirty is fun.

I like old things. Dead things are cool too, but old things are my thing. Old clothes, jewelery, hat pins.
I am totally fascinated by the times when it wasn't acceptable for a woman to go out without a hat on.

I love old cemetaries, I find a haunting beauty in them. Especially, ones with concrete angels in them

My friend gave me a fantastic graveyard field guide to symbolism. It was so fun to take it to the historical cemetary on 10th street and learn about the various headstones.

I like being able to wear my black tricorn and be a total goofball about it. I enjoy not taking life too seriously and finding a great sisterhood with others that enjoy walking on different paths.

And we wouldn't have you any other way .... hmmm ... you still need a name. How 'bout "Commandant Yardarm Erin Aimer d'Amusement?" The "Yardarm Erin" part was suggested by www.mess.be/pirate-names-female.php . "Aimer d'Amusement" means "fun loving" in French.

                      **GRIN**

I'll don me black felt hat in yer honor of y'all this weekend. I know it isn't exactly in keeping with our elegant society's theme, but it's still a black (pirate) hat...

I'll be right and proper in public. Well. Sometimes. Sort of. You know what I mean. At BHS functions, at any rate... ;-)
