So, Fredi and I were having a discussion that went something like this:
Fredi: By the way, are we sticking to any particular point in the Victorian Era? Crinolines or Bustles? Or is it just a matter of how much skirt you can shove into a car when we go out en masse?
To which I replied...
Percy: It doesn't even *have* to be Victorian. It can be Victorian, Edwardian, 1920's, 1950's, whatever. It can even be modern, as long as it's classy and Goth. Vintage is what I believe (Fajera) was shooting for. I myself like the 1890's and the "Teens" (1910-20), so I'll be playing with a couple different looks. I like the bustle look, and I like the "Titanic" look (and several others, including Regency and Georgian!).
I think it'd be fun to go to tea at any of the teahouses, to go to some of the PEERS and GBACG themed events, even Dickens Fair (and Dickens Fair Goth would be amusing, as long as we respected their rules and time period; we'd just look like a bunch of mourning widows). Maybe theatre, depending on what it was. There's several teahouses in the Sacto area and foothills. It'd be fun to hit up some of the Living History Days in local areas (Old Town Sacto, Coloma, Placerville, other locations) and the evening tours of the Old Sacto Cemetary that they do around Hallowe'en... hmmmmm...!
Does this not sound delightful to you other ladies? What other things could be thought up? Do you agree with my assessment of time period? I wouldn't want to pigeon-hole anyone into a specific era, and we all know how delightful the "vamps" of the 1930's and 40's were, as much so as the languid heroines of the Victorian and Edwardian era. We won't even get into the Renaissance and Medieval eras, though I must say I think those would be *very* select venues.
In my humble opinion, we'll find the most suitability and most use from the periods of Georgian (early 1700's) through the 1940's (though anyone is free to do *any* period they want). Thoughts?

Re: Activites for the BHS
Mon, June 19, 2006 - 11:02 PMI think that your assessment is dead on. I don't want to pigeon hole anyone either, infact, I'd even consider modern up to black leather chauffer's and newsboy caps.
If you are comfortable with the idea of cramming mondo amounts of skirt into a car, then go for it. I will probably go from the late 1800's- possibly the 20's with anything from a natural form or a bustle skirt through to a black flapper dress with a cloche.
Serrena may even be more comfortable going out in mens wear and the occasional dress. Since she isn't the total dress kinda gal.
Which means, I'll probably include a couple pairs of trousers and stroller coats.
I think that tea at the tea houses and cafe's would be an awesome activity, as well as some of the Hysterical Days in our local towns.
Theatre and Dickens Fairs would be good. While much of these may not be totally calendared until next year, giving us time to gather and make our accoutrements, and other accessories.
However, I do think, that we can plan an affordable and casual look for the time being of black clothing with a hat of our own choosing as a way to meet and be active without having to rush either sewing or finances.. That in itself will definately allow for us to have more rugged and evening activities.
Like Percy, I would much desire to stay away from Renaissance and Medieval times, as those are being awfully played out with the Ren Faires and such.
After being a Wagon Train this year and seeing what some of the local colour thought was appropriate Gold Rush era wear. I am afraid that I will have to require, that the hem of your dress be appropriate to the time period.
(mini skirts as an appropriate saloon girl wear.... NOT!!!)
I would be in absolute heaven if the BHS could have enough of our items together to take Tempest out for tea, in all of our glory, when our Silent Film Siren comes to Placerville.
Since I am without a sewing machine, I don't think it would be possible for me to have a bustle gown and proper hat by then...

Re: Activites for the BHS
Tue, June 20, 2006 - 10:32 AMSo, am I allowed to show up as a bizarre, flowey Steve Nicks knockoff? I can do vintage, but I'm not really a 'tight' sort of person. I can't wait to make my tiny, froofy hat...
I vote for tea, early and often. Nothing is more delightful than tasty tea and miniature food, especially when it is served on mismatched fine china. Can we also promonade? -

Tue, June 20, 2006 - 10:37 AMAs long as what ever you come in does not look like something you found at the local Goth n Go (ie Hot Topic). -

Tue, June 20, 2006 - 1:54 PMThat stuff usually doesn't fit me, anyway... No, no. Vintage and flowing is the name of the game.
