&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;There are no Chapter Dues, so don't worry about any of that stuff.
&lt;br/&gt;All we ask is that you have a local area where you are, gather up a few of your other OG friends, and wear your hats in accordance with the guidelines for color and age; and other accoutrements when you go out together for tea, cemetary tours and other fun sorts of OG things.
&lt;br/&gt;Men, are most definately allowed. However, men are allowed black hats at all ages, since there are very few color choices, if a gray hat can be found for our younger men, then please follow the guidelines.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;All Chapters are to Celebrate Black Hat day on July 11

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Well, first things first... we so totally missed Black Hat Day! Alack and alas! It was July 11 (see http://tribes.tribe.net/ogisfun/thread/d8191bdb-7dbd-4617-985e-243a77faad8f)! Oh well. Well, the time of year I speak of is... Autumn. Not quite yet, but looming closer. There should be tons of fun things to do in the coming months and I'm actually going to work on updating the website this week, honest!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In the meantime, we have a fun gothy happenin' here in Sacramento this Saturday. Our own Duchess Rowena Widowington (aka Shahlah Sutra) is performing some Goth bellydance at our local old school Goth club this Saturday! I will absolutely be wearing my black hat (well, it goes with my velvet Victorian-esque coat and gown, after all). Huzzah!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I think I'll add some hat notes on the website too, as I go along. You'll forgive me if it all doesn't happen right away as I'm in the midst of getting my business off the ground, but considering how long it's taken thus far to get any updates, well... I'm sure you expect no miracles.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Today. I'll be doing research and a least *some* updating. If anyone has any great Victorian or other period pics/ jpgs of black hats or women wearing black hats, etc, please do let me know (I can give you my email to send them to me, or you can message me here on Tribe and give me links).
&lt;br/&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;I thought I would give you ladies a bit of a run down on some of those Ghost Stories that Hangtown is famous for.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I think that the best and most obvious place to start is right on Main Street.
&lt;br/&gt;You can't really go anywhere in this town without there being some sort of story about a haunting or two; and just about every other house has a ghost story that goes with it.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;However, today, I will introduce you to The Carey House.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The Carey House Hotel is the only hotel right on Main Street, and has been in regular operation since opening its doors in the late 1800's.
&lt;br/&gt;There is more than one ghost that resides here... and many of them are attached to the furniture in each room..
&lt;br/&gt;However, there is one, who is a rather active kind of bugger. And for the record, we'll call him Stanley.
&lt;br/&gt;In life, he was quite the ladies man, and had been in trouble more than once for chasing the skirts of the pretty ladies in town.
&lt;br/&gt;However, you don't really notice him inside the Carey House, until you begin to climb the stairs.
&lt;br/&gt;Stanley likes the stairs... he's also a real fan of women's behinds.
&lt;br/&gt;When you go up the stairs, it's really a light brush against your tush... Nothing more... usually.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;While he is not the only active ghost, there are others else where in the building.. card players, sharp shooters, miners and claim jumpers are all around there.. Sometimes you just have to simply turn a corner.

&lt;br/&gt;The Cemetary has been nicknamed locally as Hawk's Hill.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;There were some pretty note worthy gravesites there.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Most of this county's old families, have original plots here.
&lt;br/&gt;Then there is Nathaniel Hawk - who served in the Mormon Batt. in the Mexican-American War. (Hence the nickname Hawk's Hill)
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Then there is Col. Thomas Robertson, Judge. He was one of the first judges of El Dorado County, also a member of the State Legislature. The epitaph on his marble slab is heartbreaking.. As his wife, mourned greatly over his passing.
&lt;br/&gt;His son, died of Tuberculosis, not 9 months after his father passed.
&lt;br/&gt;Mrs. Robertson, is not buried in the cemetary with her husband and son... It seems no one knows the where-abouts of her final resting place.
&lt;br/&gt;Also to note- at least 50 people were hanged and buried at the cemetary, after being sentenced by Jdg Robertson.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;However, Jdg Robertson, is surprisingly enough, not the most notable resident here.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The most notable is Louisa Chalmers. Lady Louisa was the wife of the owner of the Vineyard House. (alledgedly the most haunted House in our area). Considered to be quite the looker and social grace, she was closely watched by her husband.
&lt;br/&gt;As the story goes, Mr. Chalmers was dying of Syphillis... Louisa grew weary of caring for him, and his watching her.. So she bricked him, still alive into the wall of the Vineyard House, where he went both mad and died of starvation.
&lt;br/&gt;He haunts the house.. and she haunts the cemetary... which are across the street from one another.

I'm making up a master list of places to visit and activities to do in this coming year (2007). I'll be putting them up on the website when I'm done, and I'll of course put a link to it here. Basically I've got categories such as: Tea Shops/ Private Teas (in home), Historical Sites &amp;amp; Cemeteries, Living History Events, Luncheons, Museums, and Historical Society Events (like PEERS and the Old Sac Living History group). Living as we do in a place so richly packed with history (early Californian and Gold Rush, of course), there are millions of things to do. Bear in mind, though, that our society covers all periods up into WWII, so don't feel pigeonholed by period or place.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I'm very much hoping to have something organized in February (since January is packed for me) and I'll be making a calendar of events once I've narrowed down the categories. As always, suggestions of places and excursions are always welcome. There are other friends who aren't on Tribe who are also very interested in participating, so I'll be talking to them as well. I really would like for us to do something with this Society this year, there's so many fun things possible.

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Gentle friends,
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Whilst we of the Black Hat Society feel not the need for such trappings as some of our younger kindred (i.e. gothlings, kindergoths, baby bats, etc), it is, perhaps, entertaining to consider what our "Societal" names would be, much as the S.C.A. has Society names, the YaYa Sisterhood has their names and titles, etc. Also, I know that some of our sisters (and brothers!) have been granted what one might equate to "titles" by their younger Gothic brethren and sistren. I, myself, (if I may permit the boast) was given the title "Countess" by some of the younger Sacramento Gothlings quite a few years ago (more specifically, "the elder-Countess of Goth") due to my venerable age and years in the Community. I would opine that all we "middle-aged" OG's (black hats, no veil) might be deserving of the title of Countess, whilst our older sisters of the Full Veil might be granted the title Duchess. But I muse, only.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I believe we would agree that the Victorian age of penny-dreadful gothic splendors might perhaps provide the most appropriate names, however there are many areas to choose such a moniker from. The Middle Ages and Renaissance also provide names of elegant suitability. I would gently admonish all members, however, to avoid such cliched names as "Raven", "Drusilla", "Mina", "Morticia" and other such -- dare I say it? -- *common* names.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Some basic Victorian naming practices may be found at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~poindexterfamily/OldNames.html but this does not include the odd names often used by people in this area (think of the Classical names from mythology, and the many odd names that people in the American South used -- "Scarlett", "Carreen" and "India" are actually not strange for the 1800's South, nor did Margaret Mitchell simply make these up!)
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Renaissance English surnames may be found at http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/christian/fairnames/surnames.html (written by a good friend of mine, Lady Christian Ashley).
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Gothic literature is, of course, one of the better sources for names. One might peruse the lists at http://members.aol.com/iamudolpho/basic.html or at http://www.litgothic.com/Authors/title.html (an AMAZING site to explore at any rate!!!!)
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;If one simply cannot find a name on their own, one *might* utilize Penny Dreadful's website of Gothic Names at http://home.comcast.net/~jeniphir/babynames.html -- but I strongly suggest caution in using some of these names!!! Some are too cliche to bear!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;For myself, I prefer the Victorian and the Classic. Names of classic antiquity or Victorian nobility can never steer one wrong. I therefore take the name Countess Persephone Strangewayes, but you may call me Percy.
&lt;br/&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;** you do know this is a joke, right??? that I am indulging in my obsession with onomastics??**
&lt;br/&gt;LOL!!

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;This is *not* a reflection on any one of us...at all. It just seems to me that if someone doesnt set a date, and plan for it, well we all get busy, life gets in the way, and we forget. Oh and that sucks. Then gradually we lose touch, we lose friends, we lose things to do, we lose our togetherness. We cannot let that happen. We sure as hell cant let the straights win! Can we!!?!?!? The HORRORS!
&lt;br/&gt;So I have two dates in mind for our Black As Night As Day Tea Party-which I propose we have at Sweetie Pies (even the name is too cute for us! Aint it grand?) in Placerville on either November 12th (a day or two after out StitchnBitchnStuffnFluff which if you werent aware of...if you planned on drinking or had a long drive you are more than welcome to stay the night. I have an extra bedroom, an extra bunk in Berkes room, a futon in my office, a hammock, an outdoor couch, an outdoor swing, the regular couch, and lots and lots of floor..one covered by a 6k Bokhara carpet) or on November 19th. Its *close* to Halloween, but not so close that the locals will thing oooh so thats it. Then we can really confuse em. I plan on wearing something black. overly sexy for Placerville, and maybe a widows mourning hat, y'know with veil. *evil grin* What do you all say? Tea? Crumpets? A reading of Poe? Actually, a nice gothic reading, poem, or even song that you know or wrote yourself might be a nice little addition. After that, lets just spike the tea with some whiskey and have a grand dark time. &lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Oh my Gothness, we've been so quiet. I know, I know, "Percy," says you, "You and Henri haven't given us anything to discuss!" Hm...
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;One of our lovely ladies, Rowena, had mentioned something about titles and the granting of such? Does this become something that is bestowed, or something chosen? I think that the YaYa Sisterhood girls around the world choose their own titles, and I rather like that since there is no actual hierarchy (beyond age) in our group anyway. So, I'd feel free to choose whichever titles you like. I personally have Countess/ Contessa because it was "given" to me by some local younger gothlings a few years back.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I'd suggest that one choose Duchess, Countess, Viscountess, Baroness, Lady, Vicaress, Mistress, whatever you like, and remember that titles hold no meaning at all (other than that they sound delicious). Ergo, Duchess Gothique is of no higher "rank" than Baroness Morticia. The only thing I would ask is that members refrain from using the titles "Empress", "Queen" or "Princess" -- the only Queen of Goth I know is Siouxsie Sioux! Also, this is of course only for our Black Hat Society, any titles implied are only in that venue and should not be frowned upon if one is perhaps in, say, a certain historical recreation society that takes titles very seriously. I know that all our members would not use their names and titles in other societies, so the notation is rather superflous, but... if anyone gives you trouble, just tell them that it was all the fault of your naughty cousin [insert BHS name here].
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Still working on info about future ideas. I know it's so hot now that it's hard to think about sewing and dresses and such... wait. Who am I kidding?? However, I would like to put the following event out there for consideration... On Friday, October 13 -- what a delicious date!!! -- the Old Sacramento Cemetary is doing a Friday the 13th tour, as well as their usual evening tours on Friday, Saturday &amp;amp; Sunday October 27th, 28th &amp;amp; 29th... Something to think about, yes??? I'll get more info as I may.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Stay tuned!

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;I'm hoping that you dear ladies could help direct me to a source for black hat bases. In making my identity as Miss Ava von Vunderbar, I find that my heart desires a very small, black top hat to perch upon my voluminous dreadlocked hair. Dare I say, I want a ridiculously small one. I am quite crafty and capable of decorating the hat, but if someone could provide a website selling bases, it would be most appreciated.&lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;So, Fredi and I were having a discussion that went something like this:
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Fredi: By the way, are we sticking to any particular point in the Victorian Era? Crinolines or Bustles? Or is it just a matter of how much skirt you can shove into a car when we go out en masse?
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;To which I replied...
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Percy: It doesn't even *have* to be Victorian. It can be Victorian, Edwardian, 1920's, 1950's, whatever. It can even be modern, as long as it's classy and Goth. Vintage is what I believe (Fajera) was shooting for. I myself like the 1890's and the "Teens" (1910-20), so I'll be playing with a couple different looks. I like the bustle look, and I like the "Titanic" look (and several others, including Regency and Georgian!).
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I think it'd be fun to go to tea at any of the teahouses, to go to some of the PEERS and GBACG themed events, even Dickens Fair (and Dickens Fair Goth would be amusing, as long as we respected their rules and time period; we'd just look like a bunch of mourning widows). Maybe theatre, depending on what it was. There's several teahouses in the Sacto area and foothills. It'd be fun to hit up some of the Living History Days in local areas (Old Town Sacto, Coloma, Placerville, other locations) and the evening tours of the Old Sacto Cemetary that they do around Hallowe'en... hmmmmm...!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Does this not sound delightful to you other ladies? What other things could be thought up? Do you agree with my assessment of time period? I wouldn't want to pigeon-hole anyone into a specific era, and we all know how delightful the "vamps" of the 1930's and 40's were, as much so as the languid heroines of the Victorian and Edwardian era. We won't even get into the Renaissance and Medieval eras, though I must say I think those would be *very* select venues.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In my humble opinion, we'll find the most suitability and most use from the periods of Georgian (early 1700's) through the 1940's (though anyone is free to do *any* period they want). Thoughts?
&lt;br/&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;To begin with "BHS" obviously stands for Black Hat Society.
&lt;br/&gt;OG, of course, stands for "Old Goth". Interchangeable with OSG, "Old School Goth" or EG "ElderGoth"
&lt;br/&gt;"Gothling", "Kindergoth" and "Baby Bat" are all, of course, fond nicknames for our younger Goth kindred
&lt;br/&gt;GAF... if you don't know what this means, perhaps we are in the wrong place? (Goth As Fuck. Duh.)
&lt;br/&gt;I myself am fond of the term "Murgatroyd" for wannabe goths (it comes from a Gilbert &amp;amp; Sullivan opera called "Ruddigore" that made fun of gothic horror stories).
