Recycled Rainbow Ride Sharing!?!

Hey! I just got my ticket last night... now as it goes, once you get that you'll get there :) I'm on a.. what was a 3.5 month roadtrip around burning man, we split before the burn, but friends got me there & to Chicago, couch surfing here.. Megabus can get me to Columbus Ohio, pretty close.. looking for any options possible to get myself to the burn!!! I'll share all gas/toll costs.. if anyone's going from a near by city I can probably figure out how to get myself there.. any help appreciated!!! Thanks guys!

Medical skills very much needed

SHOUT OUT to all medical personnel within the reach of my virtual voice!

We're looking for help with the ESD (Emergency Services Department) @ this year's Recycled Rainbow. Just looking for people to take shifts playing the role of medic, which may involve putting on band-aids, treating burn wounds, fixing scrapes or bruises. Anything major would require us to call an ambulance or one of us would drive the wounded person to the hospital. We need two more medics to fulfill our needs (you don't have to be an MD or a paramedic or an RN, but if you got SOME medical credentials, give us a holler.)

Dates for this event are: Sept 24th-27th (Thursday-Sunday)

Location: East Rochester, OH (near Minerva, Canton, Akron ... nearly a 2 hour drive from Cleveland.)

Even if you can't do this, perhaps you know someone who would be able to? We only have 2 medics, and our goal was to have 6.

It's been suggested that I post here, so here I am!

Recycled Rainbow is not a gay/lesbian/bi/transexual event, but open to all of them!

The mistake is common. Throughout the years we've received a lot of erroneous feedback as to who we are and what we stand for, so we'd like to offer some clarification.

While the rainbow symbol is used by the GLBT community it is also used by many other organizations and peoples. From the beginning, we chose the rainbow as the symbol of creativity, forever recycling old ideas into new. RR began in 2002 as a large group of noisy found-sound collage artists carving their own performance venue into a house in the Cleveland, Ohio metro. Performances would start in the mid-afternoons, consume multiple rooms in the house, and continue for nearly 24 hours without pause.

Throughout the years it evolved into other art forms (video, poetry, paintings, large inflatable sculptures, geodesic domes, plays), outgrew the house, and moved outdoors. This was not to make the event more hippie or tribal, but simply to offer a larger canvas to the growth of artists and their increasingly demanding space requirements.

RR was, from the very beginning, a festival of noise and artistic chaos. While it has evolved and mutated over the years, the attitude of noise and chaos has never disappeared (and in some ways, elevated.) But we're not a noise festival anymore than we're a GLBT festival.

Recycled Rainbow is certainly gay/lesbian/bi/transexual friendly (we work with members of the GLBT community to organize this event!) but we do not *represent* the GLBT community or any community for that matter. We follow a principle of Radical Inclusion welcoming and embracing anyone and everyone who wishes to attend.

Okay, it's that time again. Recycled Rainbow Elevation is only 6 weeks away. As Volunteer Bitch, I mean Witch, I'm here to get on your case. You know you want to volunteer!

What could be better than to weild the power of a Greeter (paddles and cat o' nine tails anyone?).

Find out what it's like to be the troll under the bridge, I mean to be a Gate Keeper.

Are you a caring, gentle, nurting person who has first aid knowledge or more? You could volunteer with the Emergency Services Department. Being caring, gentle and nurturing are not prerequisites but they are nice if you're patching up somebody's boo boos.

Ever wanted to be a law enforcement officer? Well, you could be a Ranger. Even if you didn't want to in law enforcement you could be a Ranger. Rangers are not the police but they do help to "keep things running smoothly and lightly", to quote Camp Daddy our Ranger Team Lead.

Earth Guardians are looking for a few good burners. The only requirement is a desire to ensure that no trace is left when we leave. Help educate everyone to the "Leave No Trace" mantra. Be aware and pick up moop wherever you see it.

There are many other ways that you can help to create Recycled Rainbow Elevation. Let me know if you would like to roll up your sleeves and participate. Everybody knows that volunteers have more fun!

There are many ways, great and small, to Participate. You can
volunteer with one of our volunteer teams, from Medics to Earth
Guardians, and give a few hours of your time to making our
infrastructure run smoothly.

Gate needs YOU!
With the change in venue has come changes in gate. This year's gate
will be even more interactive than ever before! Be sure to be there
for all the fun and antics by joining the gate team today! You'll be
the first to see everyone as they enter into our fair 'city'. Gate is
looking for at least three people to fill each shift, so get a group
together to sign-up and man the gates! It's a favorite way for many
to participate.
The gate will be open:
Thursday, June 11th from 2pm to 10pm
Friday, June 12th from 10am to 10pm
Saturday, June 13th from 10am to 10pm.

Medic needs more volunteers!
Medic team is a needed and valued volunteer team at our event. To
volunteer all you need is to know basic First Aid and CPR, however, if
you're a First Responder, EMT, Fireperson, Nurse, Doctor, and/or
certified in First Aid/CPR and good in a medical crisis then we're
imploring you to take a shift. Medic team is needed around the clock,
but more so during 'peak' hours. Medic team needs YOUR help.

Rangers are the mediators and 'security' at our event. If you're good
in crisis situations, putting drunks to bed, helping people, and
keeping an eye out for others, then this might be the team you're
looking for. It's a great way to meet people as you walk the grounds

event.

Let's make sure everyone understands our commitment to protecting the
land by LEAVING NO TRACE. Fully participate by not leaving something

left behind you can grab. Join the EG team in daily MOOP sweeps!

To reach Recycled Rainbow, travel to East Rochester, Ohio which is over 430 feet above Cleveland’s elevation. When you’re finally home, go far beyond the entrance, up and up, further than the ponds slipping far beneath you, outward passed all the grassy hills and trees, reaching for the sky, beyond and above the tree tops now behind you, forget about them, upward you go, to the biggest most elevated patch of the campground, already inspiring an upward sensibility, outward thinking, beyond your comfort zone, further than familiarity. You are at Recycled Rainbow … welcome home!

WickerMan brings together Burn Culture, the Art of Giving and Ecological Responsibility in a festival that depends on the Radical Self-Expression of each individual. Based on the tenets of Burning Man of the Black Rock Desert, we actively incorporate their founding principles- Communal Participation, Decommodification, Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-Reliance. In essence, at WickerMan, Radical Self-Expression Meets Radical Earth Spirit.

We convene to celebrate what we as individuals offer to the community, through Art, Gifting and Self-Reliant Participation. Together we commune within the land to build and burn the biggest Man east of the Mississippi River. Individual participation is what makes this event happen, we depend on each other for content and execution. Every contribution, from Volunteering to Art Creation is essential to facilitate this WickerMan. What do you bring to the table?

Art, in its many mysterious ways, is at the core of this event. WickerMan offers over $6000 in Art Grants to fund a variety of initiatives, everything from Theme Camps, to beautiful Installations, Altars and Performance. Through Action and Creation we transcend the expected and stretch the paradigm of the possible.

Scorched Nuts 2009!!!!!!!

WELCOME:
Hey all! I am pleased to announce that beginning this week Scorched Nuts 2009 planning is underway. Although no theme is set yet, we plan to focus on bringing more large scale and interactive art and theme camps to this year's event. Due to the highly successful fund raiser Carnivolution, we will be able to supply art grants to many people who apply, as well as having a good fund to start the necessary arrangements. While we love Hannon's Camp America and hope to return with some of our events, we are currently begin to search for other spaces which may serve our growing community. If you know of a property you think we should check out, please send me a link so we can find out if it might be a good fit.

MY ROLE:
As of this time I am considering myself the General Coordinator, the position I have held the past 2 years. My responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Sets agenda and facilitates meetings and work weekends. Oversees events projects and coordinates team leaders. Creates identification for team leads and volunteers. Secures and signs for land contract, permits and insurance (with assistance from Logistics). Liasons with venue. Makes general purchases and performs on site management for the event.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES:
Many of you have filled positions as Team Leads in the past, and we welcome you back if you are interested. However we would also like to open up opportunities for new people to get in on the planning and creation of SN09. If you are interested in volunteering you will need to attend the meeting on 2/8/09 (location TBA). This will give us a chance to meet in person and break down volunteers into groups. We'll also be raffling off art and crafts made and donated by community members. All this in the Mockbee, an old brewery, in Cincinnati.

downsides to a gazebo?

I have an idea for RR that will take up roughly 10x30 ft.

I could achieve this by putting 3 geodomes together, then threading tarp on top that isn't designed for domes (but could work.)

Or possibly one big 10x30 gazebo.

I saw a "heavy duty' one on amazon for about 400 bucks, claimed to have 1.5" metal poles with rust proofing. Anything thinner seemed untrustworthy but 1.5" seems more heavy duty.

I'm afraid a major drawback is going to be wind stressing the poles, possibly bending them (which never happens with geodomes in my experience, even in 60 mph winds.) Geodomes are tough.

But really, how unsafe is a gazebo? I prefer a gazebo for its looks, ceiling, and space.

Anyone have experience building one? Drawbacks? Advantages? Now is the time to talk me out of it.

This is a bit strange, I know, but I'm looking for a one way ride for my cooler - Columbus to Black Rock.

I'm flying out there on an airline that now has fees to check luggage. I've always taken my cooler and used it to pack stuff in, but now I think I'll just leave it at home unless someone driving has room for it. I work for the event and am leaving next week (Thurs the 14th), so I'd deliver it to you sometime soon, before I go.

Recycled Rainbow - Voluntate and participeer

This morning i watched an inch worm suspended by an invisible thread several feet above the ground and several feet from a branch, striving, struggling, sweating (do inchworms sweat? - get on that one, Everyman) reaching upward to attain its goal.
Within the context of contemporary conventional American cultural values, when confronted with a suggestion to get involved and participate, the typical response is. "What's in it for me?"
In the typical mindset of today, without promise of obvious material reward, there is little impetus to act. What a shame.
To struggle, sacrifice, contribute, give time and effort unconditionally is to know a supreme reward that is difficult to quantify.
Intangible.
To give of one's self for the good of the group, the planet, just for the sake of human expression is to know a deeply felt return of energy that comes as a result of sincere selflessness and love of all things beautiful, soulful, cosmic, honest, inspiring, transformative, stirring, and death defying.
I cannot stand here and try to convince you to give your time, to 'volunteer' (an inadequate term), to sacrifice, based on my experiences and what i have received and how fulfilled i was in so many instances. Everyone is different and everyone gets something unique out of it.
All i can tell you is that, if you are the least bit humble and sincere in your giving, you will receive beyond your imagining.

Greeters

Greeters - Being the first person seen as people arrive, you will be welcoming everyone to our temporary community. Your smiling face and the information you give will introduce all to our energy and to the incredible experience they’re about to encounter. You communicate the principle ideas behind this event, camping locations, rest room locations, convey the fact we are *guests* of the campground, and re-iterate the importance of Leave No Trace.

Safety

We 're looking for some crazy (or not so crazy) EMTs, ER nurses, doctors etc. who would enjoy participating on our temporary community. We suspect First Aid is going to be the biggest concern. There is always the danger of serious injury whenever fire, fire performance, high wire juggling and other radical self expression exists. While we expect all participants to be radically self-reliant, we know that there may be occurrences that will require professional assistance. We'll need a vehicle in good working order with a full tank of gas to transport people and first aid supplies.

Medics

Medics are responsible for handling all on site medical emergencies. Medics should have medical training- Registered Nurses or EMTs are most desired. Medics need not be in the medical area all the time. You will be required to carry a radio (of course) when on call. During high population/high-energy moments you may be required to man the medical station (located in the pavilion). The pavilion has electricity and a refrigerator, but we don't know if we can use the fridge yet. It also has several picnic tables. We plan to have a truck with a full gas tank parked next to the pavilion if you need to transport someone.

Spotters

Spotters are the eyes and ears of Recycled Rainbow, talking to people, communicating the freedom and ideas of the event, keeping an eye on safety and encouraging discussion and creativity. They act as first responders for E.M.S. Spotters are not security. They handle conflict by attempting to communicate and reach compromises so police don’t have to be called. The Team Lead communicates with other teams to ensure proper and fast response in the event of emergencies.

LNT – Leave NO Trace!!! These amazing people love
to get all trashy!!! Organic, inorganic, orgasmic. It takes a lot of people hours – before, throughout, and after the event to make sure that nothing gets left behind and virtually no sign that we were ever there remains. Teach everyone about LNT through stories, songs, poems, threats, spankings … whatever means you can come up with to get the point across. We need people to help us ensure that we leave the land as clean as it was when we arrived; to ensure that nobody is damaging the grounds. Can we enjoy ourselves to the fullest and still leave no trace that our community ever existed? You bet we can - with your help! Sir William is leading our Earth Guardians this year!

Fire Safety

There will be fire!!! Large fire, small fire, fire performers. We need people to help us have radical fire expression without harming the land or the community.

Restroom Attendants

This most avant-garde idea in volunteerism was born in 2005 at Burning Man by Recycled Rainbow Camp. The hallmark of every great civilization is the manner in which they handle their biological waste! In an attempt to provide a respectful, pleasant and enjoyable experience in our temporary community, we are seeking one or two people to provide atmosphere and services for the restrooms. Restroom attendants are given the opportunity to create a theme camp in the restrooms themselves, providing lighting, music, inscense and whatever else you would like to provide to promote a pleasant environment demanding respect for the facilities. Providing reminders that "if it didn't come out of your body, don't put it in the potty" and "no moop in the poop" are some examples, but it can go much further! Theme Camp Coordination

Chaos may be fun, but we try to create a community that meets everyone's needs to the best of our ability. The Theme Camp Coordination Team plans the placement of theme camps and art installations. They also communicate with other teams to ensure all theme camp needs are met. TCC deals with registered and unregistered theme camps. Team Lead is Dirt Goddess

The event’s Hot Construction Crew!!! It takes a bit more than dreams to make this community a reality. It takes some hard work too! The DBS is in charge of building the event. Recycled Rainbow is providing an opportunity for Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio participants to gather and prototype their projects closer to home at Crystal Springs Campground in North Ridgeville starting at 12 noon on July 19 and ending at 3pm on July 20. A $10 donation is requested to pay for land and porta-potties.

Participants who are prototyping structures may arrive the night of the 18th (Friday night).

This event is open to the public and anyone interested in witnessing participants testing out their gear and prototyping their projects as well as joining in the festivities are welcome to attend.

During this event any installation or art piece including those using sound and fire can be built on a spacious 20 acre field nestled comfortably between the Ohio Turnpike and a very busy train track.

Electricity and water will not be provided so participants prototyping installations that require electricity and/or water must provide their own.

Entertainment will not be provided- unless, of course, you bring your own entertainment, which we assume you will. All rules for Recycled Rainbow apply at the Primer. While this event is not Recycled Rainbow, all information, preparation and guidelines are also useful for the Primer.

Pyrophonicville (RR) -- Recycled Rainbow 2008 is looking like it will be bigger and badder than ever. Head gatekeeper and queen Mediaeval Baebe reports that there are many new ideas for 2008, and many new faces.

"We found some fantabulous land this year!" she said excitedly, jumping up and down and spilling her absinthe. "One of the gorgeous freak things has been working on an art car for a few months now, and there will be a burlesque performance Friday night. I hear they're seeking performers for it."

When asked about the term "gorgeous freak things", Mediaeval Baebe pointed to a group photo of people otherwise known as "burners", or "those lame ass drug addicted dirty hippies" according to Fox News.

"There are loads of ideas and shenanigans being planned for RR this year. I don't even know WHERE to begin." MB reported. "We invite YOU to bring YOUR thing. Here's the stage, now you have the freedom to show your stuff."

THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $200, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

Get Involved at Scorched Nuts!

In these final days there are a couple ways you can help us out in preperations for Scorched Nuts!

If you have time on Saturday there will be much prep work going on at HCA including, but not limited to, sign installation, effigy completion, camp set ups and clean ups. As far as I know there arent plans for an overnight stay but you can certainly camp if you want to!

If you have $10, we could really use rechargeable AAA batteries for our new walkie talkies! Energizer brand would be good, but any rechargeable brand would be wonderful!

If you have an need to be involved, there are always more room for volunteers! Lamplighters, Conclave performance, Gate Keeping and Earth Guardians are all still accepting volunteers!

If you feel creative, make or bring some artwork to show in Center Camp! 2-D and 3-D art is welcome! It really spruced up the barn at octOHburn and we hope to have even more to share at this event! Please make sure your work is labeled and is ready to hang! Nails are acceptable, but those removable picture hanger things are great!

If you wanna light it up, make a lantern to use at the event! There have been some made of glass jars and others of tin cans, but really any nonflammable lantern will be put to use! Tea light and votive candles would be great to bring along as well!

If you want to set up early, you can! Many of us will be out on Wednesday next week and you can too! You will be expected to pay for your site separately from your ticket price for that night, and then you will be processed when the gate opens at 2 on Thursday.

Volunteers still needed for this weekend!!!!!

We have to finish up our work projects for HCA and this weekend is the best opportunity to do so! We need volunteers to help paint and install the large information sign at the entrances and to help clear and prepare the grounds for our event. Tent camping will be free for all the volunteers! Please plan on arriving as soon as possible on Saturday 31st and we will begin work around 11am. It is very important that we finish up these projects so we can be fully prepared for SN!!! Food and bev is BYO, but we will have a potluck dinner in the barn around 6pm and will most likely have a bonfire Saturday night. Please contact me with questions and I hope many of you can make it out!!!!!

Help others eat and learn

Hello folks! Today I'm bringing you a way to help out those who are a little less fortunate than you may find yourself this day. A friend and fellow burner (Beth, the gal at the end of this e-mail...she SO rocks) works for The Campbell County Neighborhood Center of Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission and they've been trying out something new. They've changed their pantry to include more options, healthier food choices, and are looking to offer even MORE choices with some help. They're even starting up a series of classes that cover real-life skills, such as sewing, cooking, budgeting, and more. They rely on donations of all sorts, from the drop off to the monetary.

I'd also like to remind those no where near Kentucky (though you can always help from afar) that there are pantries similar to this one across the country helping those that need that little extra boost to make it by and that it's donations from people like us, that can make a HUGE difference in someone else's life. Every little bit helps.

The food pantry at the Campbell County Neighborhood Center of Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission (www.nkcac.org) has undergone an amazing transformation. Over the last year, the pantry has changed from a traditional pantry to a client choice model based off of the food pyramid (www.mypyramid.gov).

As the Rainbow of Choice pantry, we are dedicated to helping our families become and stay healthy and self-reliant. On their first visit to the pantry, our families are given lots of healthy and easy recipes that they can make from the food we can provide. Also on the first visit (and at any other time it is requested), we have a one-on-one personalized nutritional counseling session with our families.

In addition to the changes with our pantry, we are also starting a new and revolutionary series of budgeting classes. For many families, it is hard to sit with a stranger and talk about debt, money, budgeting, and other personal matters. Instead of this, we have begun to plan Practical Budgeting. Practical Budgeting will be a series of classes based around real-life skills that help to lower bills and make a family more self-reliant. The classes are on cooking (with the help of a dietetics student at the University of Cincinnati), sewing, making homemade gifts, knitting, candy-making, and, of coarse, plain old budgeting. However, the lessons about budgeting and money will be incorporated into the more interesting skills classes.

While our organization is fairly large, the Campbell County Neighborhood Center consists of one paid worker and many volunteers. We have a very small budget that covers our operating expenses and rely on donations to have food and supplies for our families.

We are incredibly excited about the changes in our Center and are optimistic about all the good that they will do in our community. Right now, we are asking for small donations to get this work done.

Donations will be used in the following ways:

- To purchase a greater variety of food for the pantry, including vegetarian, diabetic, whole grain, and organic options.

- To purchase used sewing machines, crock pots, bread makers, and other small appliances for the Practical Budgeting class (ideally, we would raise enough to be able to send folks home with one small appliance per family).

- To purchase supplies such as sewing needles, thread, yarn, knitting needles, fabric, etc for the classes.

- To purchase small items as a “congratulations” for our families, such as movie tickets or tickets to the Newport Aquarium for a family where the parent has reached a substantial goal, such as receiving their GED or reaching one year of steady employment.

- To purchase household items such as laundry detergent, toilet paper, soap, deodorant, etc. These items are not donated very often but are in high demand from our families.

We are a tax-deductible organization and you can receive a receipt for tax purposes. To donate, all you need to do is visit our website (http://www.nkcac.org) . Go to the “donate now” button and make sure to put “Campbell County” in the “designation” line. If you would like to donate to one program in particular, make sure to include that in the designation line as well.

There is certainly no minimum to get involved and every little donation will help us to make these programs the best that they can possibly be.

SN Volunteer Work Weekend

As we quickly approach the second year for Scorched Nuts (http://scorchednuts.org) we wanted to let you know of a way to benefit the community, the event, and the camping venue. Burners from IN, KY, and OH will be gathering at Hannon's Camp America (the venue for Scorched Nuts) from May 31st to June 1. We'll be camping out (free tent camping, $10 bunk rental if that's your thing), painting signs, digging post holes, building bridges, and ladders into tree houses. This work is mutually beneficial to the community and Hannon's. Come help us foster more community growth and give back. And as always is the case when Burners gather to work, we'll have an amazingly good time.

SN Ticket Changes and Updates

Hey folks, we've been looking over our ticket sales deadlines and have decided to make a couple of quick, and beneficial to the procrastinator, revisions. First, the deadline for mail-in orders has been pushed back to May 31st for the postmarked date. If it's postmarked after that you're check or money order will be sent back in the mail and you'll have to purchase your ticket on-line or with a vendor. Secondly, tickets will be on sale on-line and will vendors until June 12th. After that time you can purchase your tickets at the gate. Also, you have until midnight tonight to purchase a ticket for the $30 price, after that until June 12th tickets will be $40. We've also lowered the gate price to $50. All deadlines, unless otherwise noted, are until 11:59pm of the date listed. Also please note that there has been a gate policy change, there will be NO in-and-out passes this year. Be prepared to come and stay. You will not be permitted to leave and come back once you exit the gates. Thank you.

To summerize:

Mail-in postmark Deadline: May 31st for $40 tickets
On-line/Vendor Deadline: June 12th for $40 tickets
$30 Ticket Deadline (on-line only): May 12th
$40 Ticket Deadline: June 12th

As always, this is open to the community at large. EVERYONE is welcome. A quick look at Burning Man's 10 principles ( http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html ) will show you Radical Inclusion at the top of the list. It's an important part of our community...not just out on the playa, but here in our back yard as well.

This doesn't mean that we allow child molesters to come into your house and play with your kids. Nope. We do try to look out for our community. But it does mean that we welcome people in, that we encourage them to interact with us and to be a part of our community. You don't have to have the same sense of humor, the same world/life outlook, or belong to the same spiritual/religious path to be a part of this community.

As things stand, Workshop Weekends at Synctuarie are for the community, by the community....so they follow the 10 principles as much as we can, which means that everyone is welcome. I'm sure as time goes on people will find others in the community that they have a problem with for one personal reason or another, but that will NEVER translate into people not being welcome to my Workshop Weekends. Personal quibbles are just that....personal and do not translate into quibbles with the community at large.

Also, as always, if anyone has a problem that they think that I can help out with.....examples: nasty remarks being said about you by people and you don't know how to confront them.....you see someone taking advantage of the community in a negative/user manner....a problem with how someone deals with others.....etc.......please feel free to contact me immediately....no matter who it may be. Hell, it could be me......but if you don't feel like you can't confront me, please feel free to contact Graham or Pokes. Both will call me on my shit...and both will call others on their shit.

Northside Art Sale and SN08 Benefit!!!

Don't forget to join us next Saturday (May 10th) on Hamilton Ave. in the Northside Community of Cincinnati from 11-6pm. There will be many different artist representing their work and a variety of sales. Mayor Mark Mallory will be there to dedicate the new Artworks mural at Hoffner park as well. The SOB's will have a booth to represent our community and our main event, Scorched Nuts! Handmade items, goodies and SN related gear will be sold and tickets will be available! All proceeds will go towards the Scorched Nuts Organizor's Account which is being used to create the event artwork, fires and infrastructure needs. InterFuse Effigy / Stage Performances

Hey there excited InterFuse-lovin' people! As you know, this years effigy is a large TV-stage for performances. We have everything from an opening ceremony (Thurs at 6pm) to movies & documentaries to educational talks to poetry readings....and SO much more! The schedule is up on the website ( http://www.midwestburners.com/interfuse/eventsandperformers.html ) so check it out!

Even with all the scheduled programs there are still a few open slots just waiting for YOU, wonderful, beautiful participant, to....you guessed it....pARTicipate! Be it being a part of the poetry jam, talk show, fashion show, or creating your own programming.

For all you theme camps out there, perhaps a 'commercial' on the stage is JUST the thing for you. Just come to the stage, find the stage manager (Poosie Kat, JeffZ, Trish, and Laura) and there you go! Also, PSA's sound like a fun way to participate and share with the community at large. If you're a performer without a place to perform, this is your venue darlin', come out and share yourself with us! Fun for the performers and the viewers.

Be sure to come out to watch and/or add your talents to the list. There are still calls out for folks to participate in the Opening Ceremonies, Poetry Jam, Talk Show, Fashion Show, Bribe-per-View, and open time slots....so be sure to make your way over and join in the fun and excitement!

The rest of the time the TV will be an open stage but without lights, sound, and video.

ALSO, we desperately need night owl Stage Managers from 2AM-5AM Friday morning and 12:45AM-5AM Saturday morning! That's a 3 hour and a 4 hour 15 minute period! I KNOW there are two of you out there who can help out for 3-4 hours! These shifts are during Bribe-Per-View, so you'll be getting bribed to play movies. No live performance coordinating is needed! It will be very EASY and FUN!! Plus, Trish will give you bacon!

This is everyman, one of the folks responsible for the Recycled Rainbow
event which took place in NE Ohio last year.

We have also sold 30 ticket reservations to this year's event scheduled to
take place in late September, which is unprecedented momentum. One minor
problem: *** we don't have a place to put it! ***

We are desperately looking for land within a 2.5 hour drive of
Cleveland, OH (which extends into Pennsylvania, and we're okay with that.)

What is Recycled Rainbow? Since 2002, people from Northeast Ohio and
beyond have gathered in a private residence twice a year and still there
is no strong definition of what Recycled Rainbow is. It is a community of
friends and strangers. Last year, Recycled Rainbow moved to the outdoors
changing everything and yet changing very little. It is a four-day
festival in a large outdoor space. It is a modern experimental salon. It
is a "no spectator" event. It is a festival where anything goes. It is a
local experiment in community and expression. It is a place to try out
that new idea you have for a sculpture or performance. It is difficult to
describe.

It is, in few words, what you turn it into. You have the reigns as much as
anyone else does. Does it have a drive-in theater? If you build a drive in
theater, it will. Does it have a stage for experimental performance art?
It does if you build one. Does it have clowns? Do you know a mob of clowns
and can you bring them?. Recycled Rainbow challenges you to do what you've
wanted to do within a set of 10 guidelines. One of those guidelines is
Participation. Like Burning Man, RR has a different theme each year ...
this year the theme is "Mutation."

Specifics we need in terms of land:

Event is scheduled to take place September 25 - 28th, Thursday - Sunday
150 people are expected to attend.

* Needs to be Outdoors
* 30-40 acres would work
* No facilities are required (it's fine if they are present but we are
self-sufficient, will rent porta-johns, provide our own power, etc.)
* we'd prefer a wide open space secluded from the road
* if the land is very remote, we would find that ideal
* Noise & music should be permissible after midnight
* There may be art cars (go-carts, scooters) present
* We could potentially have events going all day and night around the clock
* Ideal if there is a source for ice and firewood nearby
* We would like to have camp fires
* We would like to be able to burn an art structure (or several)
* We will Leave No Trace
* We will financially compensate
* We will have at least one paramedic present during this event
* We are self-policing but willing to meet with neighbors, city
authorities, permanent camping residents to discuss & inform well in
advanced of the event
* Prefer a location in NE Ohio, but willing to go as far as Columbus or
halfway to Pittsburgh, PA

We are open to any and all options.

Furthermore, please actively help us search! We *NEED* our Burning Man
community's assistance in this regard and would greatly appreciate any
tips or advice on where to look, who to ask, where to advertise, and how
to better go about this. Still learning, still exploring.

Well you are in luck! This year, through generous donations, Scorched Nuts is offering Art Grants! If you have an art project, performance piece, theme camp or workshop that you want to share with our community, but are lacking some funds, you can get help! Volunteer Weekend to Benefit Scorched Nuts!

Hello all! I hope you are enjoying this beautiful spring and are as excited as I am about getting out at Hannon's this weekend! We have a finalized work list and details on the plans and here is the basic rundown on organization and needs:

Volunteering: We have 25+ people committed to coming out so far, which is wonderful, but the more people join us, the more satisfying our work will be! We will be meeting on the lower level at the campsites. There will be a check in station at the gate/pizza place directing you where to check in for the different projects and who to be looking for. I will most likely be playing hostess for the day to keep everyone situated so just look for me in green if you have questions! There will be a lot of painting and dirty work going on so please dress accordingly. If you are camping than please find a site and unload quickly so we can get to work!

Equipment: HCA and our lead volunteers will have a lot of the stuff we will need, but again, the more equipment we have the easier the work will be. If you have these things, please label them clearly and bring them along!
- large and small paintbrushes
- paint rollers for outdoor surfaces
- rakes
- shovels
- post hole diggers
- trash bags (strong!)
- wire cutters
- metal detectors (any treasure is yours of course ;))
- power drills
- saws
- work gloves
- hammers/ screw drivers
- generally any hardware and tools will most likely find a purpose so bring all you can!

Food/ Party: HCA will be making pizza for us on Saturday but all potluck items would be wonderful! Please bring your own beverages, including water, the water there is not very tasty. Please also plan on using your own dishes so we reduce our waste. Self-reliance and Leave No Trace definitely apply here! We will be having a bonfire and party time once we are done for the evening, but please keep all intoxicants away until you are done working. Safety first! ;)

The Bunny march is this weekend, Saturday April 5th... Where: Goodale Park, at a picnic table on the SE corner of the park. (the Goodale/Park St side of the park) look for bunnies.

8pm: Bar Hop.... If you want to join us for just the bar hop we will start at Surly Girl and stay there till atleast 8:30 from there we will be at some bar on high street. (21+ only)

The Billion Bunny March:
- is always FREE
- is all-ages and open to bunnies of every shape and kind
- is Brutally absurd and ridiculously harmless
- involves protesting at least one cherished symbol of human power eg., city
hall/government building/symbol or monument. (It is also appropriate to
demand that pointy world monuments, including The Eiffel Tower, Washington
Monument, Empire State Building, Sears Tower and Seattle Space Needle, be
replaced with artistic renderings of giant carrots!)
- protests the entire human race rather than any individual(s). (All humans
are the same, after all!...and it is only through rejecting and lambasting
ALL of humanity--absolutely all sides of every human argument--that portal
to Bunnydom maybe opened and The Great Bunny Master Plan achieved.)
- induces radical play and extreme states of powerfully joyful nonsense!
HOORAY!

You will need:
- protest signs!
- Extra bunny ears, tails and make-up for converts (humans are welcome to
become bunnies by renouncing their humanity and coming over to the bunny
side through a ritual process of "dehumanization" and "bunnification")
- baskets with gifts. Nice eggs and toys are needed to give children you
come across. If producing naughty eggs of any kind, these should only be
given to naughty adults. Better still, give away art eggs or eggs with bunny
protest slogans on them or in them.
- silly marching bands/music. Easter music, Polka, Ragtime, and other
hyper-happy musical forms that keep bunnies hopping!
- a megaphone is helpful for announcements and if you are delivering any
kind of manifesto

We will be making Protest signs at the meet & greet or you can bring a pre-made sign! Otherwise Please bring a blank protest sign or 2, also bring markers, glitter and sign decoration supplies to share!

Some guidance on Protest Signs:

Note that it is very effective to have signs that are entirely covered in
plaid, flowers, happy egg patterns without words or meaning! But below are
some sample protest language signs humans will understand:

Workshop Weekend

If you don't want the meal plan, then you'll need to bring enough food for yourself for the whole weekend. Only those that pre-pay for the meal-plan can partake of the delicious food that Rebecca prepares....it's worth MORE than the $7....especially for a weekends worth of food. Rebecca will post a meal list for you all to look over and "Yay" and "Nay" here soon.

Bring all your costume ideas. Bring those bits that you've been saving, but have yet to find a use for. Bring your sewing machine if you have one. Bring your yard and needles. Bring your questions and your knowledge. Bring those items that are just too plain-jane for your burner outfits. This time we're ALL the teachers and we're ALL the students....well...actually that's the normal bit....but still. We're going to be helping one another out, bouncing ideas off one another, learning little tips, hints, and tricks from those that do what they do best. Later there can/will be more in depth workshops on much of what'll be covered this weekend.

Wickerman Burning -South Central PA

Hi!
I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

The Sideshow is an annual event in cooperation with The Dayton Circus Creative Collective. Previous year's events connected many genres of art, from music and food to installation and performance art - spectacular nights showcasing many artists both new and established, from many diverse backgrounds. This year's event will be even more incredible. Join us at The Sideshow and share your artistic vision with Dayton and the World!!

We are open to art of all forms. If you've never shown your artwork or performed publicly before, The Sideshow may be the perfect event for your debut! Static artists have the opportunity to show their work in creative instillations, and two stages will be made available to musical acts and performance artists. We encourage musical acts to include visual or interactive parts to their performance. If you have a vision to be realized in another way, please contact us, we may be able to accommodate you. We want you to help us create a show that Dayton will remember.

APPLICATION

Please include the following information:
1. Your Name/Your Group's Name
2. What does your creation look or sound like? How do you affect your audience? What do you want them to feel, think, and experience?
3. How much space will you need to share your art? If performing, how much time?

Please remember to include visuals and/or audio of your work. Artwork submitted by those chosen as contributing artists may be used in promotion of The Sideshow, The Dayton Circus Creative Collective, and especially YOU. All artists will be encouraged to make their work available for sale, and there is no commission fee for selling work at The Sideshow. If you choose to donate any of your proceeds, the contribution will be tax deductible.

If you are selected as a contributing artist, members of The Dayton Circus will gladly assist you in meeting obligatory periodic "milestones" including: preparing an artist's statement, contributions for promotional materials, attendance at planning meetings and installation of work. This is a cooperative community event, and all contributors will be required to volunteer one day (4-8 hours) of effort beyond the installation of their own work. You will soon find out how exhilarating, stimulating and rewarding is to work with such an energetic and creative group! We want this show to not only include your creation but your energy as well.

We would like to challenge you to avoid using paper, CDs or other resources unnecessarily. It is preferred that you submit your application letter via e-mail to thesideshow@DaytonCircus.org with 2-5 examples of your work attached. We prefer MP3's for Audio, YouTube for video, and JPG's for photos, though we can work with most digital formats. We may request more examples of your work before making our decision.

SN '08 Rangers need YOU!

Still not figured out how you'll be participating for Scorched Nuts 2008? Do you want to see and be seen? Do you have a patience, good walking shoes, patience, good communication skills, sense of humor, and more patience? Do you just have a way about you that seems to simmer people down? Do you want to be an integral part of SN '08 going off without a hitch?

If you answered yes to the above, then being a Ranger just might be the opportunity that you were looking for!

The Rangers are a cross-section of the community who volunteer some of their time in the role of non-confrontational community mediators. Responding to the ever-changing environment, we address within our community situations that would otherwise require outside intervention. By encouraging and facilitating communication, the Rangers promote awareness of potential hazards, from sunstroke to tent fires. We are emphatically not the police or a paramilitary organization. Rangers are the mediators of public safety and providers of information.

The shifts are flexible, reasonable, and pretty damned fun. You'll be required to have a walkie talkie (and use it properly), walk around the grounds, stopping into camps to chat, spread info (such as: If it didn't come from your body, don't put it in the potty....that you're a Ranger and what you do.....that sort of thing), and be ready to deal with any situations that may arise. Last year Scorched Nuts was pretty quiet, and probably will be again this year.

Resonate - Chicago

Looks like our friends and neighbors in Chicago are at it again. Resonate 3.0 - March 29th.

They have almost double the space as last year!

Also at this time they're sending out a call for people interested in helping out with this all volunteer burning community event. WOOT!!! So not only can you mark your calendars for a kick ass party where you'll meet a ton of fantastic fun people, but you can be one of the rockstars that help put it together. How cool is that!

Resonate was invented to bring all the tribes in the midwest together under one roof! And if the past two years are indication, I'd say that they've DONE it.

All the money (every penny) made at Resonate goes straight back to the community into a fund that supports other activities like, Decomp, Town Hall meetings, BRAF, Art grants, etc... and theirr full $ budget is completely transparent, and is sent out in detail to their announce list!

I have big plans and would love to colloborate on some art too or at least help with making art. Regionals are a great place to test out playa ideas and Interfuse is my start to the summer fun season. Both of these equal a big WIN! If you have not been to Interfuse, it is amazing and not far from Iowa. I expect it to sell out this year so buy tickets when they go up early next year. I will send a message out.

This theme is a study of modern life that is very relevant to us as burners. Modern technology is both a consumer product and a means to promote consumption. Yet it can also be used to create art and to connect us. Technology extremely enhances our creative abilities yet also enhances our destructive abilities. As we know from our experience with the fire arts, destructive technology can also result in positive beautiful things.

Burners are especially suited for examining our relationships with technology. We are some of the most technologically savvy people out there. We've used the tools of the internet to connect with each other and build a community like no other. We are intimately familiar with creating new uses for technology and subverting it to our own fun purposes.

At InterFuse 2008, we will mock, celebrate, exaggerate, demonstrate, and use technology to create. Bring your fearful or hopeful vision of our technological present and future. All robots, cyborgs, couch potatoes, slaves to the machines, Luddites, interactive tutorials, genetically enhanced humans, virtual selves, icons, nuts & bolts, flotsam & jetsam etc. are welcome! You can take this theme in any direction! Unveil a new and enhanced IF08 Theme version 2.0. Come set up your office cubicle camp, post-apocalyptic scenario, personal billboard, or cyber-utopia. Form a techno cult or create a reality TV game that has gone horribly awry. Show off your inventions, bio-fueled art car, or invite people to add to your open source installations. Create recycled trash art, build a DNA sculpture, or assemble something else so engaging that people find themselves sitting around it for 36 hours straight sipping energy drinks.

At the center of this technological cacophony will sit that most loved and most hated icon of modern technology, that mighty conduit of modern culture, that unmatched propaganda and marketing tool—THE TELEVISION! The TV will be large enough to serve as an open performance stage and projection screen. We will be filling our giant television with our own content. All participants are invited to create Premier Entertainment Programming and clever personal advertising to display on our TV. There must be NO dead air time!!

Our modern society churns out tons of STUFF! So, around the giant television will be piles of personal technology sculptures created by YOU. Bring an effigy of whatever technology you fantasize about burning. Does your cell phone drive you crazy? Build a larger than life cell phone with non-toxic materials like wood, cardboard, paper, cloth. NO BURNING ACTUAL PLASTIC TECH DEVICES! You could give your effigy evil teeth or put something in the screen to express it's annoying qualities. Put your art on the pile around the TV and watch it all BURN on Saturday night when we use our favorite medium, fire, to transform technology and reclaim it as an authentic tool of our imaginations.

Thank you to everyone who came to Recycled Rainbow. It was a blast, i tell ya! And naturally, here comes the decompression that i finally got off my arse to pull together. ;p *haha*

HI! I am coordinating a brand new local festival that will hopefully
become an annual event. It is called octOHburn and will be held
October 5-7 at Hannon's Camp America near Oxford Ohio. It will be a
weekend of collaborative art projects, large scale fires, tribal

Just got back from Burning Man and in need of serious decompression??

Look no further than Recycled Rainbow!

(Tickets stop being on sale online after Sept. 19th as we'll be on the campsite preparing the land for you)

On September 28th – 30th, Recycled Rainbow, an experiment in Temporary Community, will emerge at the Hide-A-Way campground in Leavittsburg, Ohio. Theme camps, art installations, and unrestricted creativity are among the many things you will experience; but this is a no spectator event, so you will find only as much as you are willing to contribute.

It's not about what you get, but what you give.

Recycled Rainbow has 10 simple rules to follow: Radical Inclusion, Gifting, Decommodification, Radical Self-reliance, Radical Self-expression, Communal Effort, Civic Responsibility, Leaving No Trace, Participation, and Immediacy.

Other than firewood and ice, there will be no vending permitted. If you have something to give, gift it out. If you have something you need, bring it in!

Pack everything you'll need for the weekend, take it out when you go, and leave no trace!

There will be no dumpsters or trash cans or trips to the convenience store. Electricity and water are available in the main 'Downtown' campsite, and primitive camping is available in the adjacent "Invisible City".

Prepare for rain!

Prepare for anything, so you can do anything.

Recycled Rainbow is an inclusive community project of which you are an integral part. You are radically responsible, but you are radically free! How will you contribute?

Each event has its own distinct theme. In lieu of our push for radical self-reliance, this year's will be Armageddon. Participants are encouraged to employ this theme in their artworks, costumes, and camps.

Recycled Rainbow: FANTASTIC SUCCESS THANKS EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED!

Wow. I mean WOW. What a weekend! I think everyone who participated in the first outdoor recycled rainbow can agree that it was definately worth the three days of torrential rain, dissentary, pubic lice, angry mobs and SWAT teams. We have nearly all the money collected to get Everyman out of prison- and are currently putting together a fund for psychological treatment of all the permanent camping residents who succumed to fire-madness and began torching their own belongings.

Special thanks goes out to Bob, the guy in trailer 14 who has now officially taken over the Recycled Rainbow organization.

It was a great treat to everyone who attended to learn that all the money collected from tickets was burned with the thirty-foot tall giant effigy of Ron, our effigy builder building an effigy.

YOU GUYS ROCK.

Good morning all!

As I posted in another thread, my wife (Dawn) and I would like to host a burn party on September 1 to coincide with the burning of the man on the playa.

We are located in southern Ashtabula county, about 30 miles south of Ashtabula and 30 miles north or Youngstown.

I would like to get a gauge on interest for this.

I have a large 2 car garage for shelter, plenty of yard for tents, electric, water. The house however is a bit smaller than it looks, hence the tents. The yard is quite large with a space for a bonfire/effigy.

If this looks like it will fly, I will need to post up a few rules to go along with the land. We are a semi-working farm so I need to be sure everyone is protected.

Please let me know, so we can do some planning.

First time burner

Hey guys,

I decided to take the plunge and head out to burning man this year, have my ticket already. I'm obviously new at this, and I was wondering if there is any advice the experienced burners could provide that isn't in the official survival guide.

Also I would like to see if I might be able to join in with a camp and help out with an art project or what not, that and it would be nice to not be out there completely by myself.

moving to the country - yay or nay?

My close friends have been helping me weigh the pros and cons of moving nearly 50 minutes outside of where I work in the city, but was wondering if anyone here had advice?

I realize most people do the "suburban sprawl" to avoid crime or just to live in what they consider to be a nicer looking neighborhood.

Me & DG (Dirt Goddess, my gf for the unaware) are simply interested in obtaining land & privacy. We don't need a *lot* of privacy, but for the time being we live in Lakewood where you eat breakfast with your neighbors who are literally 15 feet from your kitchen window. We'd also like some acreage. We don't need Tim Black-esque acreage (17 acres I think?) but would be happy with less than half of that. We'd like to be able to build art sculptures on our property, allow for outdoor camping, have a garden, have a burn or two, and breath the sweet oxygen that trees and plants provide when they are in abundance.

We are sacrificing:
living close to shopping
living close to friends
having a short commute to work
not spending a lot of money on gas
not having much of a lawn to mow
not having much a driveway to shovel
being close to shows & events in Cleveland
a house that doesn't need a lot of reapir

We are gaining:
land
quiet
privacy
ability to build and spread out and artistically express ourselves on our own land
an old house needing some work
ability to allow people to camp on our property
a shitty commute (though it is *against* the flow of traffic)
a shittier commute in the winter
isolation

This is all burning man's fault

house share offered

have this huge amazing house in the middle of a 16 acre woods. The house is 3500sq with a 2000sq basement and a three car garage. 6 bedroom, 5 bath, High speed WiFi, cable, a full metal shop, welders, lots of storage, and a complete electronics lab.

There are trails and clearings in the woods, and a creek, it is pretty much a private park. The land is just west of Middletown between Dayton and Cincinnati.

I have three bedrooms available. All are large, two have walk in closets. I'm looking for people who would enjoy living in a geek / art kind of household, that also happens to be in a park. All or part of the rent could be work/trade for housekeeping or work on the land or in the lab. I have a no-smoking no-drug rule, this is just because I value health and clear thinking.

I design electronic devices at home, and do art at Burningman. I used to live in California, and sharing a house out there was pretty common. Not so much in Ohio, but there may be a few people out there for whom this makes sense.

TRIAGE:Activist Art Exhibit: Saturday,6/30,Fountain Square

On Saturday, June 30, 2007, Fountain Square will host TRIAGE, an all-ages free indoor/outdoor exhibition of public art in a variety of media: two and three dimensional work, installation, dance, performance art, film, spoken word, and music, all relating to the
interconnected themes of earth, justice and peace. All of the gravest issues our society and environment can be related to this triad of subjects, and this event will bring together a diverse number of very skilled artists.

Over 80 artists, writers and performers will converge on Fountain
Square to deliver their creative and urgent messages on Saturday, June 30, in this free event taking place from 10 am until 6pm. Artists will be spread throughout the Fountain Square area, and a main stage will feature musical acts throughout the day, along with an open drum circle at 3pm and an open mic at 4pm. (It will be moved to the Wheeler Arts building in case of rain.)

Later that evening, Radio Radio will host a benefit concert for the
Hoosier Environmental Council. The evening concert will start at 9pm, and entry is $5.

** Musical acts include: The blackSoil project (pure organic hip-hop), The Sarah Grain Trio (jazz and bossa nova-inspired folk), Men of Many Vices (bluegrass), Kate Lamont (of MabLab/ blueprintmusic), Twilight Sentinels (golden-age hip-hop), Bala vs. Laptop (electronic and African melody), Dance performance by Jaclyn Virgin, Megan Mills and Kevin Wiltz, DJ Spread.

So, if anyone has their contact info, if you would pm me (not givin' me the info, but to gather mine to send on to them), I would be most appreciative. I know that she and I have run into one another here and here, mainly on-line, but I'm thinkin that it wasn't on tribe....but somewhere else. Too many damned forums man....too many! heeheehee

stealing a burning man street sign

Have any of you ever done this?

I always get mixed feelings about it.

There was a year I was plopped right at the intersection of a street, and by Saturday's end, all sorts of people from everywhere far far away from our street were coming over to take our sign. If we didn't protect it, then someone would have stolen it. My camp defended it, like a beautiful rose that grew on our property, and by god, this was ours! It was our guide, our way of knowing we were home, and you can't have it!

A group of sign-thieves came over and offered to make us a new sign to replace it, so long as we were willing to give it up. We hesitantly agreed and they left to go make a new sign.

Then...at that moment, we felt we DESERVED that sign. It was going to go. Someone was going to steal it. But we.... we LIVED there, right in front of that sign. We saw it every morning when we woke up, and every night when we went to bed. We saw it each time we came home. We felt it should leave with us.

So.... we climbed up on a stool, carefully dismantled the sign, and stored it away in one of our vehicles, locked it up.

Those folks DID come back asking for the sign, and indeed, made a replacement. We were like "thank goodness you made a replacement, someone else came by and stole it without asking!" They were suspicious but moved on.

Sunday morning, we caught them in our dome sifting through our stuff, trying to find the sign. They didn't find it. It was ours.

Bless that sign and all that it meant to us...it marked our address, where we camped, where we held salons, where Chnick soldered his sign together on the playa, where I figured out how to get my deep cycle batteries to work, where Michael put on improv theatrical spectacles with other burners, where my friend Jay played the lapsteel and others tried using his classic expensive banjo as a drum kit (much to his displeasure), it's where we played Blue Danube at 4:00 am, it's where we first landed our vehicle, it's where we last left. So many good times were held right under that beautiful sign. It called to us....."You can't take the playa with you, but you can at least take me, and remember the good times we all had together...."

Had we not, someone else would have.

Sure, we are disrespectful assholes for taking that sign.

But those from the "other side" would be bigger ones if they got it first.

A matter of ethics, so it seemed at the time.

I'm guilty, Burning Man. I'm responsible for the theft of one of your signs.

It will be treasured and respected for as long as I live. I draw both a smile and a tear each time I look at it for awhile. It hangs, like a painting, like that art it was meant to be

and now...

it shall always be.

many of you have enjoyed Harlen Gruber's "Diamond Portal" over the past few years. to help jog your memory the Diamond Portal always sat at 11:11 in deep space and combines sacred geometry, immersive environments, and user modulated sound installation to create an incredible sensory experience and, Harlan believes, a portal for the transformation of humanity.

the "Diamond Portal" has consistantly been a project i look forward to each year with mischeivous glee and has been the scene of several vaguely remembered crimes against mundanity. the site of the Diamond Portal burning amongst the ruins of the temple in 2005 is an image permanently branded on what's left of the good side of my brain.

this year Harlan has plans to make a much MUCH larger version of his portal, the Sapphire Portal. it will again include sacred geometry, immersive environments, and user modulated sound installation, but will be taking these elements to much greater plains.

unfortunately - unforgiveably, some might say - Harlan was over looked during the granting process (in their defense he was up against some brilliant competition - http://www.burningman.com/installations/07_art_fund.html - awesome right??) and is trying to fund the Sapphire Portal on his own dime and the dime of those willing to support him.
