Where were you when you first heard that Elvis Presley died?

I was at home, just playing in the basement, I think. School hadn't started yet. I was nine years old and would be in the fourth grade when school started up a couple of weeks later.

Not long after that, my mom bought an Elvis record while shopping at the ZCMI Center mall.
I think it was the 1972 record recorded live at Madison Square Garden.

First Night

There are a few cities in Utah doing the First Night thing. St. George (where I am), Salt Lake City (where I'm from and want to go back to), Provo (where I wouldn't want to live) are having First Night celebrations this year. But what happened to Ogden? They had one last year. And didn't Logan have it last year, too?

Last year was stupid here in St. George. First Night was on December 30th. Supposedly beacause there wouldn't be many people attending on the 31st because the 31st was a Sunday night. Doesn't First Night start around 7:00pm? Yes. Doesn't church let out before that? I thought so, but some really serious LDS folks hang around church a lot on Sundays. And they also won't celebrate Christmas on Sunday, either.

At least in Salt Lake City last year, they were able to accomodate people who don't believe in partying on Sunday nights as well as those who don't have a problem with it. Music performances on Temple Square were held on Saturday night December 30th and everything not held on Temple Square was Sunday night December 31st.

Anyway, I'll be back home in SLC long before there is another Sunday night New Year's Eve.

Drum circle event at Kayenta cancelled last night.

The city of Ivins trotted out some sort of noise ordinance. Maybe the name of the event made them think that there really would be 8,000 drums there. I didn't know until I arrived and some other drum circle attendees told me.

"Alcopops" in Utah news again.

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has tried unsuccessfully for three years to get yummy malt beverages out of grocery stores. Now the state legislature will try and probably succeed. Now we will have to make a trip to a state-run liquor store to get something that's not any stronger than our 3.2 Utah beer. I'm in St. George, where we have had only one liquor store for a long time. Now we have a new one, but we have to ask around for the address.

I was watching the news on TV and Rod Decker was at the capitol talking to some teens who think we need yet another silly rule dealing with alcoholic beverages in Utah. (If those kids don't drink any alcoholic beverages that's their business. But why be in favor of making it less convenient for those of us who want such beverages? By the way, I'm speaking for those of us 21 and older.) Is it not bad enough that we can't pick up a bottle of wine at a grocery store? I will also have to make a special trip to a state-run liquor store and pay more for my very occasional six-pack off Smirnoff, which takes me three days to drink.

Drum Circles in Utah

As far as I know there is still a drum circle in Salt Lake City at Liberty Park. And I know about the ones down here by St. George at Kayenta. And then there is some drumming going on at some of the festivals in St. George. These are the only ones I know of in Utah, but I'm sure there are many more. When more people join this tribe, we may find out.

For those of us in Washington County, there is a drum circle at Kayenta on the first Friday of every month. It's supposed to be at or close to the full moon. Last Friday night, it was a lot of fun. Usually, there are some women who would rather dance. I'm one of them, but the other ones usually arrive later (around 8:30 or 9:00 instead of the 7:30 or 8:00 start time). This last time it was an introduction to West African drumming and there were some extra drums available to use for folks who didn't bring one. But there were no doumbeks this time. Maybe because the usual facilitator wasn't there. (He's in New Zealand right now.) There is no discussion of spiritual or political viewpoints, just drum stuff. And there are people of different age groups and different types of drums

Anyway, the full moon won't be so close to the first Friday of the month next time, but I'm sure I'll find out what will be happening. This is an important activity for me because there isn't much to do in St. George.

Missing the Living Traditions Festival

I live in St. George right now and I miss the Living Traditions Festival that happens every year in Salt Lake City. It started last night and is going on right now. It will be going on tomorrow, too.

I miss the performances, food, and crafts of the many nations represented there. There are so few cultures represented in St. George.

I will be trying to find out who besides Shawaza will be entertaining at the "international food festival" at the Harmon's grocery store in St. George on June 9th. I missed seeing Pamella Asquith and Las Palomas at the St. George Art Festival this past April because I didn't even know they were going to be performing. Info on these kinds of events doesn't get around this town the way it should. In Salt Lake City I could always easily find out the Who, What, Where and When of these types of entertainments.
