RE: the "f" word

topic posted Thu, June 5, 2008 - 2:39 AM by  Miss Phae
Lots of exposure to the expletives in the media, construction workers anyone in the military service, hotel service. on public transport,, etc,, has anyone grown tired of the overusage of the "F" word?
For a fine collection of imaginative insults, one could do worse than Wayne Hill and Cynthia Ottchen's "Shakespeare's Insults",,Ebury Press. These folks have gone trough the plays with a fine tooth comb, for example--- "Do thou amend thy face, and I will amend my life" (Henry IV, Part 1")
"I durst not laugh, for fear of opening my lips and receiving the bad air ( from your stinking breath) "Julias Caesar",,

I find this sooo much more expressive, and less vulgar than the "F" word,,

Any thoughts my fine friends?

Personally, I think the over use of the "F" word demonstrates a lack of willingness to think, to use more fitting adjectives to express what you desire to get across.

I listen to the diatribes on ESPN where a manager or player has every other word a matter of the "f'ing umpire", the "f'ing coach", the "f'ing media", etc, etc.

I never use the word in public, only in the bedroom or in the context of the one I am speaking with in reference to the sexual act not as an adjective. If I used it otherwise you could say I'm "f'ing" fed up with the "f'ing" use of the "F" word.

I have no problems with cursing, or even expressing hatred. Much more preferrable to me, than those who 'always smile'.
However, I realize that misuse of the first amendment endangers civil rights.

Sometimes the *F* word is just the right word. Most of the time I try not to use it (thanks to having a 5yo) Other times a well worded insult is so much more satisfying.

"thou picture of what thou seemest, ... idol of idiot-worshippers... thou full dish of fool"
~ Troilus and Cressida, Act V, scene i

'ol Bill did have a way with the insult, eh?

My, myself, I'd rather save the f-word for its proper place: between two (or more?) consenting adults.

      Hello M.Phae,

Strange you would post on this now. I was grown up not using any language harsher than
what Beaver Cleaver would say, but I just got back from a vacation most ill choose of
      companions for travel.
Because of this my use of the "F" word was almost continuious, but
I did use it once not in anger, but in joy and finding out that something went right.
I do like those that think rather than explicationafy, but sometimes for emotional
potency the "words" are needed to get the point across quickly.
I do love Shakespearan insults so. oh, so.

When June said, "Ward, weren't you a bit rough on the Beaver, last night?", my friend said, "F**k, that was harsh!", and I said, "Are you allowed to say 'harsh' on network TV"?

Every so often I come across a student who has a very limited supply of adjectives... I routinely offer them a thesaurus. One time a kid actually came to my classroom later and took me up on my offer and we talked for a couple minutes - nice kid.

Honestly I think it's laziness - the "F" word can be used as a verb, noun, adjective, or expletive... how many other words can you think of that fit that description?

You're about as innocent as a boa constrictor at feeding time!!

Will that fit the bill ?

I will use the word sometimes only if I am truly ticked off. Well, that seems lame. Really, really mad and that isn't often.

Using such words can become a habit that is hard to break. I know people who cuss and it is just so ill mannered to me to hear someone saying such words a lot. To make a good point is entirely a different thing.

I always think of people who cuss a lot as low class.....that is something left over from my mom days......yet, as I said, I have been guilty.

I have a crush on JLC [ to you non-face-to -face friend of mine that stands for Jamie Lee
          Curtis :)
Though she is totally one of the hottest women on the planet, she improved her
rank with me in one interview by telling this story.
While driving to an important appointment with kids in car, her son [front seat] and younger
daughter [ back seat] < at least as I gathered the situation was>
were singing to a song, JLC pulled the car over to go through the song, detail by detail of
what the lyrics were so her children would understand what they were really singing.
One of the words was Beeotch, and she explained that this was -G- rap for Bitch, and
was that really something that the youth [ her kidz]] really wanted to be saying, also this prevented them using biotch to someone that they did not mean to call a bitch.
Sometimes we are such slaves to convention that we get dragged into such horrible
behaviors, sometimes *unbenounced* < *G* love that word>
I was really impressed with her commitment to parenthood, integrity, and her
          Chutzpah for doing that.
Also her showing up in a photo shoot with some extra 30 pounds of chub to demostrated to women that even the stars are not immune to the dread monster cellulite,
That took guts to show her *gut* and showed her compassion for the propaganda image
that the media floods us with about HOW A WOMAN is SUPPOSED TO LOOK.
That JLC, she is so damn cool.
This should probably be in the thread on sexy older women a personal perspective also. ;\

I remember when the f-word was used for the very first time on the BBC by Kennth Tynan the theatre crtitic of the London Times - caused a bit of s stir, rather common now - There is a time and place thing, but in films and plays language should relfect life!
