Ron Jessie, former LA Rams Pro Bowl receiver, dies at 57

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Ron Jessie, a former Pro Bowl receiver who played for the Los Angeles Rams and two other teams during an 11-year career, has died. He was 57.

Jessie died Friday after suffering a heart attack in his Huntington Beach home, said his son, Brandon.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Jessie during the eighth round in 1971 and traded him during training camp to the Detroit, where he played the next four seasons. Detroit traded him to the Rams in 1975 for a first-round draft pick.

Jessie was a solid No. 2 receiver behind Harold Jackson and Preston Dennard for the next five years. His best year was 1976, when he made the Pro Bowl after catching 34 passes for 779 yards and scoring six touchdowns.

He was a member of the Rams' 1980 Super Bowl team but injuries prevented him from playing in the 31-19 loss to Pittsburgh.

Jessie played his final two seasons in Buffalo, retiring after the 1981 season.

During his career he caught 138 passes for 4,276 yards and scored 30 touchdowns.

Jessie played college football at the University of Kansas, where he also earned All-America honors as a long-jumper. He won the national indoor long-jump and was a member of the Kansas indoor team that won the 1969 U.S. Track and Field Federation national championship.

In addition to his son Brandon, Jessie is survived by his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Felicia; and another son, Ron J
