THIS POSTING WORKS!! Tech/Prog/Psy Motion Notion 2007 mix by Sons of Aurora

Sorry about the multiple postings, for some reason my previous two attempts ended up with empty postings. Grrr..... so now I am doing them one by one. =)

Norris and I had a blast at Motion Notion (Alberta, Canada) this year, the promoter James really out did himself and the weather was INTENSE but made for big adventures for sure.

We are now excited for our dub/glitch set at Shambhala (British Columbia, Canada) on the Beach stage on Saturday, and of course taking part in the Green Moon (Green Sector & Moon Tribe, hello turbo sound rig!!) camp at Burning Man (Nevada, USA) this August... now that's going to be one hot (+50 Celsius, zero humidity is the forecast) and dusty week in the desert. We will be wrapping up our summer festival season this year by playing at the Symbiosis gathering (California, USA) at the end of September so we are feeling very lucky for having so many incredible opportunities to play some tunes for folks.

I have a bunch of great photos from gatherings and festivals in my photo gallery, and I have just added a bunch from Motion Notion, you can find them here:

www.area709.com/darvin/gallery/view/93/

Listen to the mix here:

Description:

We are VERY happy with how our set came together for this years Motion Notion festival, so we decided to record it afterwards here at home and post it up for others to enjoy. This year we were wedged between two full-on psy performers, with Wizzy Noise being the act to follow us, so our set was meant to be a roller coaster through driving minimal tech, progressive and full-on psy. Add to that the fact that our set started out with hot dry sky's filled with stars and ended during a MASSIVE rain/thunder storm with tornado warnings for the area in effect... talk about INTENSE!!!! In the end our laptop finally stopped working and our fear was that it had actually shorted out due to the rain but the next day it started up without a hitch which was a HUGE relief. Our goal was to keep everyone engaged, twist a few noodles and not burn people out on the full-on. From all the super-positive feedback I think we managed to kick some ass!! Many of the tracks are killer classics, with a few shinny new ones thrown in, and the overall flow is a bit of a journey so sit back and imagine the thunder clouds closing in from behind, and as the mix ends the rain is coming down with a vengeance and the clouds are swirling with the threat of tornadoes. They don't call us Sons of Aurora for nothing....

Enjoy!!

Proud to bring another legendary trance act to Toronto, the Shakti Collective presents:

kids of the ‘80s

TICON Live (Digital Structures, Sweden)

Filip Mårdberg and Fredrik Gilenholt form one of the world’s most successful and electrifying live shows in the progressive/psychedelic trance scene. With a deep background in the techno scene they started playing around with their computer in 1995 and this step brought them along many paths they hadn’t dreamed of. Along the way their amateur dabblings became the acclaimed production standards we hear today, with an exquisite feeling for sounds and percussion.

Their unique style walks the thin line between trance and psytrance with crossover excursions on both sides. Their music varies from the floorfilling to the hipswinging funky but they all emit the Ticon sound and the message to be happy and to be loosin it to the music.

With acclaimed releases Rewind (2001), Aero (2003), Zero Six After (2005) and hit tracks like U Make Me Wanna Drink more, Ticon is preparing their 4th full album. Get prepared for the enthralling sounds of Ticon as they make their debut performance in Toronto!
Ray Vincent started out playing in bands and an interest in messing with gear and electronic equipment. Then he discovered the world of techno and fell in love with electronic music. It only made sense to start writing it. When Ray discovered psytrance he had found his home. Now after a few years of playing live shows he has honed his skills on getting the dance floor movin’ and groovin’. His music is best described as dark atmospheric psytrance that rolls along at a fast pace tempo. He has played at parties in Toronto and Montreal, including the Eclipse Festival in 2006. Get ready for Ekoplex to rock his hometown.

Tao Jones - Speed Limit Hiphop Sampler

Tao Jones - Speed Limit Hiphop Sampler

www.thephatconductor.com/TaoJones-SpeedLimit.mp3

This promo mixset is a sampler of the slower stuff I like to play as Tao Jones. It's basically a condensed version of the hour and a half to two hours I normally play. It starts off all chunky and hiphop, gets glitchy, rages it, catches it's breath, and then get's all wobbly in the low end. The last track I probably wouldn't play at an event unless it was really appropriate, but it's one of my favourite songs ever so I thought I'd share it with you.

If you like the music on this set, please support the artists by buying their music and going to their shows.

Thanks and props go out to ana sia, lorin, the glitch mob, and sean conlon, who did shut em down with me.

Much love

Dylan

1. Cyne - Nothing Scared
2. edIT - Dirt Off Your Hova Cutup
3. Freakon - Badman Mash
4. Funkstorung Feat Tes - Chopping Heads
5. Tao Jones - Shut Em Down
6. TTC - Dans Le Club (Instrumental
6a. M.I.A. - Galang (Acapella)
7. Dabrye - Lost
8. Kelis - Bossy (SebastiAn Remix) - Tao Jones' Non-Dairy Edit

The Faculty of Art of the OntarioCollege of Art &
Design (OCAD) is pleased to present its
mostinternationally recognized alumnus Michael Snow,
in conversation with Bruce Elder, on Thursday, January
25, 2007, 6:30 pm, as part of Art Creates Change, an
annual series of presentations by notable
Canadian artists at the forefront of their professional
practices.

Michael Snow is an internationally-acclaimed filmmaker
and multi-disciplinary artist. Snow crosses
disciplinary boundaries by working in
painting,sculpture, video, film, photography,
holography, drawing, books and music. Since the 1960's
Snow has radically reframed ideas of time and space
through consistently inventive camera related works of
art. His work challenges perception and redirects our
experience of art. Snow's work is represented in
private and public collections including the National
Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Museum of Modern Art
(New York), Museum Ludwig (Cologne and Vienna), and
Centre Georges-Pompidou (Paris).

Snow's award-winning films have been presented at
festivals around the world and are included in
the collections of the Anthology Film Archives in New
York City, the Royal Belgian Film Archives, Brussels,
and the Oesterreichesches FilmMuseum, Vienna. His film
"Wavelength" won the Grand Prize at theInternational
Experimental Film Festival in Belgium (1967), and
"SoIs This" won the Los Angeles Film Critics award
(1982).

One of Snow's most recent installations called The
Windows Suite launched at the TorontoPantages Hotel
and Spa during the Toronto Film Festival in
September2006. The permanent installation is made up
of thirty-two varied sequences of images, presented on
large-scale plasma screens inseveral windows of hotel
and related condo buildings facing Victoria Street. The
image sequences show curious scenes, like police
searching a hotel room with flashlights, fish swimming
from window towindow.

Public art works well-known toTorontonians include
Snow's Flightstop, an installation oflife-sized
Canadian geese in flight, hanging in the main atrium
spaceof the Toronto Eaton Centre, and The Audience,
large-scalegold-painted sculptures of figures enjoying
an event, mounted abovethe northeast and northwest
entrances of the Rogers Centre (formerly known as the
SkyDome).

The recipient of numerous awards, Snow received a
Guggenheim Fellowship (1972), the Order of
Canada(1982), the Governor General's Award in Visual
and Media Arts(2000), the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal
alumnus and was recognized as an OCAD Honorary Fellow
in 1983.

Bruce Elder is a filmmaker, critic and Professor of
Film Studies at Ryerson University. He is
considered one of Canada's foremost avant-garde

Sum Kidz Solstice party

Ummm yeah, no one else seemed to mention anything so i guess i will, that party on the Saturday night before the solstice was a big fuckin disappointment. i all together felt ripped off, and there was no formal apology to boot (that i'm aware of) $5 lakehead beer??? even the a cop was laughing at that. i was burned with $20 in drink tickets. i just got back from Van. a matter of days before that and needless to say it didnt feel very welcoming. Also the lack of costumes was a bit disheartening. that is all.

Ciao,

and all together One Love

dec 8 - sub.conscious loft party w edIT, mutt, phat conductor, dept of motion + more

for info and audio samples check out www.downtempo.ca

friday december 8 downtempo.ca and the phat conductor unite to form sub.conscious and bring you a night of live music, cutting edge electronics, art, video, and deeeeebauchery! our new venue is the lavish studio 208 loft at 235 carlaw.

musical guests:

edIT - planet mu, alphapup, and the glitch mob in LA.

this guy is one of my favourite musicians ever. his new album certified air raid material (dropping in march) is so goddamn ill that it made me come out of promoter retirement just to hear it again before it comes out. if you're into tipper, bassnectar, prefuse 73, burning man, or anything like that you will LOVE edIT. we put a video and some audio samples up on downtempo.ca if you want to have a listen. his downtempo is among the most lavish ever, but you HAVE to hear the party jams. they are so dirty it makes me question my sexuality.

the department of motion - girl delux, ilevel, mutt, the phat conductor

this is my band's first gig in toronto and it's going to be a blast. we've been hard at work over the last year working on an album that spans the genres of trip hop, drum and bass, house, downtempo, and breaks without losing focus or stylistic unity. it's pure creativity. brainfood for the lucid. we'll be doing a live audio video show for this event so be sure to come check it out.

the phat conuctor - thephatconductor.com. sub.conscious

you know the score. i'm not about to write some cheesy third person bio.

mutt - metalheadz, creative source, renegade recordings, misc.

in addition to doing beats and prodution for the department of motion mutt has a pretty impressive recording career behind him. in the last three years alone he has ha releases on metalheadz, creative source, renegade recordings and many other top drum and bass labels. his smooth groovy sound rocks dancefloors proper without descending into hours of mindless bass drops. i'm sure you will love it as much as i do. the guy is pure class.

rollin' cash - om, sumkidz, manervous beat

what is there that needs to be said about a cat who is THIS ill? the guy has been at it forever and it shows. his diverse styles are sure to rock any dancefloor and he is one chill dude to boot.

adrian - downtempo.ca, sub.conscious

the man behind downtempo.ca has one of the most incredible music collections i have ever heard. it really is retarded. he'll be laying down an early set of downtempo and idm for all the true heads.

pr.incest - sub.conscious

this girl is one of the most avid music heads i have ever met. her taste and dedication are truly humbling. she'll be kicking the event off with some taaasssty downtempo and experimental so be sure to get there early.

Then, At 4pm, meet at the south gates of Trinity Bellwoods park with your
community band, activist group, costumes, people-powered floats, instruments
and join a parade led by the ReEvolution Day Arkestra, the giant street band
where everyone is a member. (we had 250 revelers in the pouring rain for
last years parade)
http://www.myspace.com/reevolutiondayarkestra

At 5:30 ˆ PARADE down Queen St. We‚ll take the east-bound lane all the way
to Nathan Phillips Square. Just like a World Cup or Stanley Cup victory,
we‚ll celebrate this victorious day where the streets of the world return to
the people.

CODE OF PARADE ETHICS

During a street parade it is important to keep a few fundamentals in mind.

Cops are our friends. They are here to keep us safe. Treat them with
respect and it is more likely to be returned and less likely that we‚ll be
hassled. It helps to greet them by their title: "Peace, Officer!"

Respect the TTC - More public transit means less cars and less pollution.
They are on our side. The parade will be blocking car traffic, but when a
streetcar comes up behind us the rearguard of the parade will yell
"STREETCAR!" and we‚ll spread to the side and let it pass showering it with
cheers and shouts of "TTC we love you!"
Part of the point of this action is to prove to the City that our citizens
are responsible enough to get out of the way and not hinder public
transport, meaning we can close a street without paying thousands of dollars
for ugly, police-state barricades.

Invite Car Drivers - This is a party, the bigger the better. We are not
here to taunt or harass car-drivers, rather to invite them to park their
cars and join in the fun.

Keep the Parade together. It‚s very important that no gaps develop in the
parade as some car drivers may try to squeeze themselves in.

Corking Intersections ˆ we‚ll need the help of experienced cyclists from
Critical Mass for this. If head of the parade approaches a red light, we
stop, then go once it turns green. When the light turns red again, we do
not stop the flow of the parade. Corkers will block the cross traffic with
their bikes all the while smiling and thanking the drivers for their
patience until the parade has crossed the intersection as a whole.

Emphasis on FUN ˆ costumes, props, homemade signs and banners and of course
a healthy sense of humour make it a parade (not a protest march)

Peace, we're all in this together,

PS. DON‚T BRING A CAR!

NorthWest Homestead

I live here on the North Coast. But I have some land up in Washington that needs a good home.

This place is way out of sight up on a hilltop that is situated way up in Ferry County in North East Washington State and is near water and National Forest lands.

It is a very private and sunny 10 acre piece of land with a view that would make a great Self Sustainable Solar Powered Homestead for someone who wanted to start putting some roots down in one place and to build their own natural home in a place that has few building restrictions.

The land is nicely situated way up high on a grassy hilltop with a great view overlooking the beautiful Kettle River valley and then across to the mountains on the other side.

It is about 5 miles north of the historic little town of Curlew on highway 21 up in the northern end of the county and it is near tribal lands and other good folks in the local community.

Good building sites, almost flat in many places, Trees out behind and not too far from the year around creek below and within a short walk out back to a National Forest that extends way up the mountain behind you and with grassy fields to the south and below and at a relatively Low Elevation of only 2500 feet you may be able to grow almost anything there and it is a nice sunny spot that is perfect for Solar Power. You will need to put in a well, eventually. There is power and there should be phone lines nearby. It is not that far out but I would stay off the grid and out of sight.

I just want to find a good home for this place since I am committed elsewhere and can't get away. But I live off the grid myself on all Solar power and have been doing so for over twenty years on raw undeveloped land as far as the cocunty is concerned and that means very low taxes stay in place long term. They don't see a house, they don't tax a house.

Consider this to be a safe haven that you can actually retreat to and live when you retire or on in any time of need or as a place to bring together around to create a sustainabvle way of life in community. - T

im sure most of you get this mailing, but i wanted to remind everyone of this awesome thang we are privileged to have.

summer is -gasp- loosing its steam a wee bit (i know it SUCKS) so lets all get together and dance!! plus, besides the regular awesomeness of dave and irving (and their crew), some other really awesome-o people are playing and doing visuals for us!

hurrah!

________________________________________

this sunday August 20th
shanti baba + hot pie records + promise cherry beach sunday afternoon soundsystem

We’ve super enjoyed our collaborations with groups over the past sundays. Join us down at the beach this weekend for a three way featuring dubbed out sounds from Alx and the Shanti Baba crew, and the trippy live techno, dub, hip hop and drum n bass of Hot Pie Records, as well as our own hand picked Promise house selectahs. Shanti Baba is our favourite paraphernalia store at Bathurst and Queen West with a really cool and friendly staff, and Hot Pie Records is a group of diverse and motivated music lovers and they’ll be bringing a lot more than music along with them this sunday (think pies!).

Also, we recently did an interview with Raju Mudhar from the Toronto Star about Cherry Beach. Raju is an intelligent and sympathetic voice and his article aims at supporting the contribution Cherry Beach and the sunday afternoon celebrations have made to putting the fun back into our city’s public spaces and adding to the waterfront environment. Look for the article in this sunday’s edition of the Star, probably in the Metro or Entertainment section.

Shanti Baba will be starting the afternoon early with a roster of their favourite reggae and dancehall djs, then here’s the rest of the line up:

5.00 Fabien Palmer – progressive house
5.45 Sage Firman (Lazydaze) - tech house
6.30 Toye and Zumba - live dub and trip techno
7.15 Rythmicru with EF Sharp - live hop hop
8.00 Spooloops - live house
9.00 Ben Marshall - deep house
10.0 Jonah K - dreamy drum n bass

visuals by Jackie, Elysha, Siren and Tomoko

yummy cherry pies and prizes from Hot Pie Records!

Bring a frisbee, bring a kite, bring a handy sweater, bring a dog (only nice dogs), bring your lover and a hammock. And pass the time on this lazy sunny sunday afternoon with friends and friends of friends.

3 to 11pm - east end of the park, in from the water.

Directions to Cherry Beach: Take Lakeshore Blvd east of downtown just past Parliament. Turn south down Cherry Street all the way to the end, then go east into the parking lot on your left. At the furthest east of the lot walk along the bike path and turn left up the trail into the woods... you'll hear music. If you end up at the lake, you're going the wrong way.

Biking to Cherry Beach is easy along the paths beside the lake, a new bus route from Union Station goes down there too.

Things to think about: Please bring only what you plan to take back out with you - leave no trace. Pack something warm (it gets cool after dark by the lake) and something to sit on and also something to keep sun off your head. Drink lots of water. Bring something to share.

And remember while down at the beach to take care of your friends, your neighbours, and what's going on around you. It's what makes the sunday afternoons happen smoothly.

If the weather turns grey the day of, call 416 323 0361 for the contingency plan.

This is my first time ever posting on the Tribe board - it took me a while to figure out, actually, I wasn't sure how to post, how to join the community, etc., but I think I've got it all figured out now...

So...hi! How is everyone? I've missed the OMMB but in a way, taking a break from posting on it has been good for me. So much incredibly valuable information and memorable moments and poignant and significant and sentimental posts lost (hopefully not forever, but I haven't been really keeping up with what's happening with that)...but I've accepted that loss, if it is inevitable, and am moving right along.

It's been a fabulous crazy summer, very much in the work hard/play hard vein. I'm still teaching ESL and at the height of our peak season, we had over 500 students at the school, double what we normally have, and twice the number of teachers. Absolute chaos. Got over a few scrapes and bruises from the Boreal camping trip alright. Went for a Sunday skinnydip at Hanlan's Point last weekend. Trying to keep writing, and appreciating summer heat.

Anyways, I'm taking the day off work tomorrow to accompany my mom to the hospital for hip replacement surgery. It's fairly routine these days, and my mom's only 58, so prospects for recovery are very good. She'll be in hospital for 3 days, and then rehab for a week thereafter. What complicates matters is she is the primary caregiver for my older sister, who is mentally challenged, and I will be assuming that role for a little while, specifically on the weekends (and some possible weekdays) so I won't be able to go out for more than a few hours at a time on the weekends or after work for a little while; juggling that, and going to visit my mom at rehab, and taking care of Caroline will be hard, but I feel good about doing my part....

Please send your good vibes and energy to my mom tomorrow (her surgery is in the morning, from 11 to 1). We both strongly believe in the healing power of prayer and positive energy, so any and all thoughts are appreciated very deeply.

I may be a bit scarce from now till the end of the summer, but keep in touch, y'all.

R.I.P Murray Bookchin

Wow, I just found out that he died, last month.

Bookchin was the primary influence for all of my political thought, so I thought it'd be appropriate to make a post in his memory.

for those of you who never heard of him here's the Wikipedia article:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Murray Bookchin (January 14, 1921 – July 30, 2006) was an American libertarian socialist speaker and writer, and founder of the "Social Ecology" school of libertarian socialist and ecological thought. He is the author of two dozen books on politics, philosophy, history, and urban affairs as well as ecology.

Bookchin was born in New York City to the Russian Jewish immigrants Nathan and Rose (Kaluskaya) Bookchin, and was imbued with Marxist ideology from his youth. He joined the Young Pioneers, the Communist youth organization, at the age of nine. In the late 1930s he broke with Stalinism and gravitated toward Trotskyism, working with a group publishing the periodical Contemporary Issues in the 1950s. Then gradually becoming disillusioned with the coercion he saw as inherent in conventional Marxism-Leninism, he became an anarchist, helping to found the Libertarian League in New York in the 1950s.

His book Our Synthetic Environment, published under the psuedonym 'Lewis Herber' six months before Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, described a broad range of environmental ills but received little attention because of his political radicalism. His groundbreaking essay "Ecology and Revolutionary Thought" introduced ecology as a concept for radical politics. Other essays from that time pioneered innovative ideas about ecological technologies. Lecturing all over the United States, he helped popularize the concept of ecology to the counterculture. His widely rep[ublished 1969 essay "Listen, Marxist!" warned Students for a Democratic Society (in vain) against its takeover by a Marxist group. These and other influential 1960s essays are anthologized in Post Scarcity Anarchism.

Through the 1950s and 1960s, Bookchin worked in a number of working class situations -- including a stint as a railroad stevedore. He began teaching in the late 1960s at the Free University. a counter-cultural 1960s era Manhattan-based institution. This led to a tenured position at Ramapo State College in Mahwah, NJ. At the same time, he co-founded, in 1971, the Institute for Social Ecology at Goddard College in Vermont. He moved from Hoboken, NJ to Vermont upon his retirement from Ramapo and devoted his time to writing and lecturing around the world. His 1982 book, The Ecology of Freedom, had a profound impact on the emerging ecology movement, both in the United States and abroad. He was active in the antinuclear Clamshell Alliance in New England, and his lectures in Germany influenced some of the founders of the German Greens. He continued to teach at the ISE until 2004.

Bookchin remained a radical anti-capitalist and vocal advocate of the decentralisation of society. His writings on libertarian municipalism, a theory of face-to-face, grassroots democracy, had an influence on the Green Movement and anti-capitalist direct action groups such as Reclaim the Streets. He was a staunch critic of biocentric philosophies such as deep ecology and the biologically deterministic beliefs of Sociobiology, and his criticisms of "new age" Greens such as Charlene Spretnak contributed to the divisions that affected the American Green Movement in the 1990's.

His book From Urbanization to Cities (originally published as The Rise of Urbanization and the Decline of Citizenship) traces the democratic traditions that influenced his political philosophy and defines the implementation of the libertarian municipalism concept. A much smaller work, The Politics of Social Ecology, written by his partner of twenty years, Janet Biehl, briefly summarizes these ideas. In 1999, Bookchin broke with anarchism and placed his ideas into the framework of communalism.

In addition to his political writings, Bookchin wrote extensively on his philosophical ideas, which he called dialectical naturalism. The dialectical writings of Hegel, which articulate a developmental philosophy of change and growth, seemed to him to lend themselves to an organic, even ecological approach. His later philosophical writings emphasize humanism, rationality, and the ideals of the Enlightenment.

His last major published work was The Third Revolution, a four-volume history of the libertarian impulse in European and American revolutionary movements. He died of heart failure on July 30, 2006 at his home in Burlington, Vermont at the age of 85.
The article doesn't mention what I belive to be his most profound essey, dealing with the future possibilities of Anarchism, wich is called "Post Scarcity Anarchism". Anyone interested in economics/production and anarchism should find the essey and read it.

Psychedelics could help addicts

Aug 10, 6:50 PM

Some of Vancouver's top drug policy officials say the city should consider treating drug and alcohol addicts with psychedelic drugs to help them turn their lives around.

Zarina Mulla, the social planner for the City of Vancouver's drug policy program, says hallucinogens such as peyote and ayahuasca could offer addicts "profound benefits." "There have been profound, lasting and positive behavioural and lifestyle changes in the clients who were given that sacrament," she told CBC News.

"I say this as a treatment so it is under very ritualistic and therapeutic conditions. It helps people understand who they are and leads to a process of self examination and recovery."

She co-authored a report last year saying the use of peyote and ayahuasca could be "beneficial," and is recommending that the city spend some money to look into the idea.

The idea already has the support of other drug addiction experts, including David Marsh, the head of addiction medicine at the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

"My feeling is that people with substance abuse disorders should have the same treatment as people with cancer or heart disease. If there is a natural compound that shows some promise, it should be rigorously evaluated and if proven effective it should be offered."

The city report was released following a report by the Health Officers Council of British Columbia that also suggested that medical use of psychedelic drugs could be useful.

B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall also thinks that used properly, the psychedelic drugs could help addicts change their lives.

"Anything that fundamentally alters their perception of themselves may potentially have a therapeutic use as an adjunct," said Kendall.

So far, there are no plans to set up a clinical trial in Vancouver.

check this out, of all places it was in that conservative rag the NY Post today! (i just read someone's copy they left sitting on the table next to me at lunch)

*******************************************************************
ONE IN 3 AMERICANS SAY U.S. AIDED 9/11
SURVEY SHOCKER

By THOMAS HARGROVE and GUIDO H. STEMPEL III

August 3, 2006 -- More than one-third of Americans suspect federal officials assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East, according to a new poll.

The survey also found that 16 percent of Americans speculate that secretly planted explosives, not burning passenger jets, were the real reason the massive Twin Towers of the World Trade Center collapsed.

The national Scripps Howard/Ohio University poll of 1,010 adults also found that anger against the federal government is at record levels, with 54 percent saying they "personally are more angry" at the government than they used to be.

Widespread resentment and alienation toward the national government appears to be fueling a growing acceptance of conspiracy theories about the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Suspicions that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job quickly have become nearly as popular as decades-old conspiracy theories that the federal government was responsible for President John Kennedy's assassination and that it has covered up proof of space aliens.

Seventy percent of people who give credence to these theories also say they've become angrier with the federal government than they used to be.

Thirty-six percent of respondents overall said it is "very likely" or "somewhat likely" that federal officials either participated in the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon or took no action to stop them "because they wanted the United States to go to war in the Middle East."

"One out of three sounds high, but that may very well be right," said Lee Hamilton, former vice chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also called the 9/11 commission).

His congressionally appointed investigation concluded that federal officials bungled their attempts to prevent, but did not participate in, the attacks by al Qaeda five years ago.

"A lot of people I've encountered believe the U.S. government was involved," Hamilton said. "Many say the government planned the whole thing. Of course, we don't think the evidence leads that way at all."

University of Florida Law Professor Mark Fenster, author of the book "Conspiracy Theories: Secrecy and Power in American Culture," said the poll's findings reflect public anger at the unpopular Iraq war, realization that Saddam Hussein did not have weapons of mass destruction and growing doubts of the veracity of the Bush administration.

"What has amazed me is not that there are conspiracy theories, but that they didn't seem to be getting any purchase among the American public until the last year or so," Fenster said.

The survey found that people who regularly use the Internet and not mainstream media are significantly more likely to believe in 9/11 conspiracies.

The survey was conducted by telephone from July 6 through 24 at the Scripps Survey Research Center at the University of Ohio under a grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points. Scripps Howard

International Day of Action

International Day of Action
SATURDAY 12th AUGUST 2006
STOP ISRAEL’S BOMBING NOW

There will be an International Day of action on Saturday 12th August when demonstrations will be held around the world.

Mass rally & march in Toronto will start at 1.00 pm in front of the Israeli Consulate at 180 Bloor St. W., on the north side of Bloor, just west of Avenue Road. (Closest subway stop is Museum Station)

The US/UK proposal to send international forces to southern Lebanon, on their conditions, will only escalate this war. Deploying more firepower that is clearly 100% on the side of Israel will not stop this violence but will worsen the conflict. The immediate need is for Israel to stop its attacks.

Hey to all OMMIES!! I just joined this tribe, after reading for quite some time now, observing and smiling at how much of a family this community is. I am proud to say that I've been to OM 04 and Re:Union last year - but unfortunately i missed In:tent this summer because I am on the west coast until the end of August. Anyways, on with my point!!

I am currently participating in a program called Katimavik, (some people may wonder - what the heck is that??) and I have been gone from T.O. since last November. I am on Vancouver island right now, and it's absolutely gorgeous!! I am having major withdrawl from dancing the night away, though, and I am looking forward to hopefully finding some OMMIEs on the island to connect with.
I am thinking about making my way to Calgary in late August/early Sept, and was wondering if anyone would be going in that direction as well.
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer sunshine, and hopefully I can find some connections with other awesome people here on the island, and on the interior as well.
If anyone has any ideas as to what may be an effective way to reflect, learn and appreciate the time we've spent together, please reply!! Or you can email me at mymotherisearth@hotmail.com.

good camping practices..... any good ideas??

Hi there everyone.

I'm on the hunt for practical, good camping practices. (Radical, Eco-oriented, intentionally sustainable and low-impact.)

I would like to produce a zine (on recycled paper) regarding the subject (under creative commons), with the purpose of copying and distributing freely at festivals all over North America this summer ('06). There is much information on good camping practices that is yet to be compiled for this project so i would like to ask those of you out there, who care, to share some of that info. I would be open to one-liners/short blurbs, DIY instructions, 1st hand stories, essays and already compiled information. Printing should take place somewherer in the 1st week of August.

Thanks for your input

Please leave a message thru tribe
Or you can email me at 3.14blank.space@gmail.com

Who is going to ORP presents - Intent ?

I’m going to Intent ! Are you ?
This will be my 5th summer solstice gathering and I cant wait to be out under the stars and the moon with so many friends, coming together again. I am happy to say once again I will be presenting a video art installation at one of the sound stages. I hope to host other Vjs with the means to drop some clips too. This is the third year in a row I have brought my installation to the festival and Om 2003 was the first time I played video of any kind at an event of any kind. I played my animated short movie Cosmic Ascension During the excellent performance by main stage band Kanal. Cosmic Ascension is a film based on the teachings of the Mayan Dreamspell calendar. Beliefs and legends close to the hearts of the members of Kanal and as I soon found many others who like me are enchanted by the mysteries of the Maya and some who truly follow the Mayan calendar. My intention in telling you all this is to point out that my current position as a Video Technician a Vj and or Video Artist at all types of events is a direct result of my participation at Om 2003 where my film was seen by one or two members of the BLA... ->Insert shameless plug( BLA presents Gus Till and more including me-June 30th )
and as they say the rest is history .
Because Om openly served as such an incredible creative platform for me I feel a responsibility to myself and the community to continue to participate and add to the festival with my passion for video art.
AND ITS SO MUCH DANG FUN I CANT WAIT

http://www.omreunionproject.org
THIS FROM THE WEB SITE :
There will be 2 soundstages this year which will feature:
Drum and Bass/Jungle
Techno
House
Dub
Breaks
Psytrance

Here is a list of some of the collectives involved in the soundstages this year:
Afterglow
BLA
Coalition
Dharma Lab
EMP
Foundation Music
Gnome
Sumkidz

^ ^ ^ ^ ^
This is good you should come :)

Hey everyone,

We recieve a new member here almost DAILY! I was hoping we could all write a little about ourselves to let everyone know who we are!

I am Dawn. I went to Om 2000-2004, they were amazing and changed my life. Since, I have moved to Vancouver, amongst many other OMies, whom have become like family to me.

I like to be outside, dancing freely (preferably naked) to some phat as break beats in the warm sunshine, and it's best if I have a ball in my hand.

I miss my hOMe these days... I'm coming back in August. Keep me updated as to what fun stuff will be going down!
BBC Doc: Freud's nephew created consumerism as mass control wtf!?

Like Baraka, this documentary will be mandatory viewing when i take over the world... Totally mindblowing. I think the last part will be available starting tomorrow.

http://informationclearinghouse.info/article12669.htm

The Century of the Self

How politicians and business learned to create and manipulate mass-consumer society.

Adam Curtis, The Century of the Self tells the untold and sometimes controversial story of the growth of the mass-consumer society in Britain and the United States. How was the all-consuming self created, by whom, and in whose interests?

Freud provided useful tools for understanding the secret desires of the masses. Unwittingly, his work served as the precursor to a world full of political spin doctors, marketing moguls, and society's belief that the pursuit of satisfaction and happiness is man's ultimate goal.

Request for info re: Re:Union '05 workshop/themecampers

Hi everyone.

Just a quick, but uber-important request:

If you facilitated a workshop, or if you set up a themecamp during Re:union 05,
please PM me ASAP (before April 6th if possible).

The 2006 workshop and themecamp coordinators are interested in compiling your feedback/thoughts/feelings/opinions regarding last year's set-up, so we've put together a little questionnaire for y'all (only 10 questions..no biggie). We've emailed it out to those who participated last year, but alas, a bunch of those email addresses are no longer in service, so we need your new contact info ASAP if you wish to help us form a vision for the '2006 gathering' workshops/themecamps arrangement.

Muchos gracias,
6th Mass Extinction

Hey folks,

I've been facing the realities of life which are facing us these days, and I have been coming across problems like this in the news... This is "old news" apparently, but no one seems to do much about it. I am trying to kick some ass to get people motivated to write their political figures, talk about this loudly on the bus, start thinking about ways you can change personal lifestyles to create a better world for our future, and our childrens future.

I remember when I was a child they sat me and my friends in a smoked filled hut, gave us one oxygen mask and said "this is your future"

We buy water in bottles now, I don't believe oxygen bottles could be far behind. It's too bad the rest of the earths species can't carry bottles.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/03/21/un_biodiversity_report/

Human activity is causing the biggest loss in biodiversity since the extinction of the dinosaurs, a UN report says.

Released to mark the start of the UN environment programme meeting in Curitiba, Brazil, the Biodiversity Outlook 2 calls for rapid and decisive intervention to avert further species loss.

A flock of worrying statistics front up the report.

As much as 80 per cent of Caribbean hard coral cover has vanished in the last 30 years. Large North Atlantic fish have endured a two-thirds drop in numbers. Up to around half of higher birds are threatened with extinction.

Disturbingly, every year since the turn of the century 6m hectares of natural forest have been destroyed. The bulk – around 4m hectares – disappear annually from Africa, which can scarcely afford to lose what natural resources it does have.

Even where habitats are relatively intact in terms of sheer area, they are becoming fragmented. This puts huge pressure on their ability to support biodiversity.

Productive ecosystems are the foundation of human wellbeing, the authors say. A recent survey showed that 15 out of 24 markers of ecosystem health - from fishery stocks though to water supplies and atmospheric cleanliness - were in decline. In fact, overall demand for ecological resources outstrips supply by 20 per cent.

Alien species introductions brought about by human activity are bad news for biodiversity too. Since the opening of the Suez canal, some 300 species have invaded the Mediterranean from the Red Sea, out-competing natives that occupy a similar niche in the ecosystem.

The financial hit from introduced pests is estimated at over $100bn.

The overall picture frames humanity's effect on global biodiversity in a geological context; there have only been five mass extinction events in the history of Earth that compare. We're now in the same destructive league as asteroid strikes, enormous flood basalts and ice ages.

The new report paints an even more grim picture than the first Biodiversity Outlook, released in 2001. In response to that assessment the UN set a target in Johannesburg in 2002 to achieve a “significant reduction in the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010”.

That's now looking increasingly unlikely.

In effect then, the current Curitiba meeting is a last-gasp effort to rescue that target, “by no means impossible”, according to the new report's authors, though it requires "unprecedented action".

The authors urge better habitat protection, pollution curbs, and resource management.

Labour has sent DEFRA minister Jim Knight to Curitiba. Though with relatively little biodiversity of its own to preserve, Britain's role must be to support efforts in the tropics, which play host to unimaginable numbers of species.

don't tie yourself in some bs. about how the system works-

casting your vote has more impact than intellectual wanking -

as important as it is to speak of the dao- it is that much more important to live it

new phat conductor tunes...

Just thought I'd drop a line to let you know what I've been working on lately...

Been spending most of my time working with my new band The Department of Motion. We are a 4 piece from Toronto consisting of myself on beats, bass, composition, production, etc.. Clara on vocals, Iain on guitars and bass, and the illustrious Stu doing the recording engineering. We should be ready to start doing live shows by the summer.

Here's a little mp3 teaser of a few tunes I have on the go with the band: http://thephatconductor.com/DeptOfMotion-Teaser.mp3

The first one I made for my girlfriend nunich for christmas (hence the covert living room samplings) the little short one is just getting started (to give you an idea what the process is like) it didn't have vocals or instrumental parts at that time. Then there's an as-yet-unnamed dubby tune, and this 15/8 time signature thing I did for Iain for Bravo (a canadian arts network) there's a video in the works. I can't wait.

I've been doing lots of breaks stuff lately too. I'll post about release dates when they are a bit closer. Most of this stuff is fr summer.

Here's a little breaks teaser: http://thephatconductor.com/ThePhatConductor-PriceCutsRmx(wDaveDub)-RawhillRmx(wDaveDub)-X(wBassnectar).mp3

It consists of the Price Cuts remix I did with Dave Dub (coming out on Lab Rok), the Rawhill Cru remix we did, and then a tune I'm working on with Lorin Bassnectar. The first two are finished, just not out yet... I did a house tune with Jelo that will be dropping soon too, you can hear it in my Shambhala live set.

Those of you on the East coast of Canada will be happy to know that I'll be headlining "Noise Complaint This!" you can get the details here: http://www.ravehalifax.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=18501

I've been taking this really cool course at U of T about the nature and origins of meaning in the human world. There are a bunch of free lectures online that are totally worth checking out. www.mapsofmeaning.com

Until next time...

hey yo,

if you happen to be in alberta, or near by,
consider spending solstice (real actual solstice, dec 21-22) with us
for a full day and a half intentional gathering

Pure Tone Healing of Crystal Bowls - my story

I must share my experience of unlimited love and healing white lighte during a performance two nights ago. The performer is named David Hickey, he has been touring across Canada playing an huge array of quartz crystal bowls, glass bowls, brass tibetan bowls and a gong cymbal. His website is http://positivevibrationscanada.com.

This particular show I will talk about was held in a beautiful church in Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast of BC; the room held perfect reverb. I was sitting next to a really great friend and were invited to come by two all-loving friends I had just met that day.

So David begins by sharing a little bit of background and intention and says his performance happens in two 45 minute sets with a 15 minute break: the first half being an easy introduction and the second half being a full-on journey. During the first session, I was very restless and was having a hard time sitting still (as usual, due to chronic pain). I watched him do his thing for a bit, but soon closed my eyes to take it all in. The sound was sooo soothing and calming, but still sitting in pain, I was extremely glad for that 15 minute break to arrive.

Now for the second session. After I moved around and stretched out my body for the duration of the break, I sat down on the same pew and waited patiently. Coming back into the room, David asked the audience of almost 100 to focus on some kind of intention while listening to the second half. Instantly, I thought of my mother, who is also in much pain. He started playing the wonderous crystal bowls once again and I closed my eyes to fully concentrate on the resonating sounds as pure white healing lighte. I visualized this universal white lighte enter into the top my head and saw my mother floating above my head, totally encompassed by a spiral of this loving lighte. I felt then, that I wanted to extend this to everyone, so I began to visualize the lighte surrounding and entering my friend, sitting beside me. Then I saw everyone in the room being loved and healed in the same way, and eventually I extended it out to the whole world, all the while seeing the pathways of lighte connecting my head with everyone else's. Moreover, I was actually able to sit still with an almost complete absence of pain (something that RARELY EVER happens to me).

In the midst of tranquility, my visualizations turned to nothingness; I didn't remember a single thing from this point until the concert ended. The duration of the second half seemed to have passed very quickly, and I couldn't open my eyes even upon hearing all the comencing chatter in the room. I had entirely forgotten about the people, the room, the sound, my self and my breath. Samadhi, perhaps? I sure think so! I have reached similar states of non-being in the past, but never without a psychedelic catalyst. This time I was sober.

The rest of that night, I was filled with utter blisss. It didn't matter to me what was happening in the universe, as long as it was happening; I was content to simply exist. I also felt indecicive and just wanted to let the universe guide me in whatever direction it may, and it surely did, straight into the welcoming home of my two new all-loving friends who had originally extended the concert invitation. Here, I gained some new insights into the psychic nature of humans (but that's another story)!

Here is a poem I wrote the following evening while on the bus, leaving the Coast:

A sense of great calm; collective, careful and comforting.
Resonating pure tones turn to white lighte; encompassing.
Sharing this with others, allowing love to flow; grow.
Forgeting my self and breath; completely letting go.
