Re: Oprah..
06/03I do not have all the details and tribe does not seem to be working on my computer at home or I would youtube you all the info.
She is promoting a new age book that is said to be the best seller of the centrury. With this new belief, she has started a church with over 1 million member, so they claim. Is it for enlightenment or is it the money. Because she is gaining a heck of a lot of revnues from this.
All I saw, is that when she denied Christ on national television, she broke a lot of older black womens hearts. You should see the messages they sent her on youtube. And they were messages of love, not hate. -

Re: Oprah..
06/03I have heard she is into 'the secret' - looking at how much money she makes she must know - the secret...
Even Fox News says the "New Age" book is "all about self-empowering and how to find out who we are. " - What is wrong with that?? I say live and let live.. Is Oprah the role model for older black women? I think they will be fine without her. 2 each his/her own. I see they did mention the secret.. and "Marianne Williamson’s kooky "Course of Miracles" " - which I want to read.. Not very professional to call a book kooky that has helped so many people. I think in this world of negativity and depression - We need a miracle!!
This sounds like the media trying to say Barack Obama is a terrorist.
here is more uninformed and unprofessional journalism.. courtesy FoX News.
"What makes Oprah’s seminars even more creepy are the "study groups" she has lined up for Tolle at bookstores and other locations around the world. They’re all hooked up to the seminars through Skype, and the members can ask questions. They all have that same glazed-over look as people giving testimonials on late-night infomercials."
Creepy = FOX NEWS and they way they use adjectives to try to sway your opinion.
What is wrong with a guy who is promoting Love, enlightenment, laughter and living in the now??
It is unfortunate that New age has gotten such a bum rap b/c when It comes to "glazed-over" that is what I see when I go out to Wal-mart or any other store where I see everyday people. everyone is so medicated and brainwashed..
There is nothing wrong with living in the now.
Jesus is an entire other issue and I didn't see where Oprah brought that up.. but - it is her personal issue.. personally I think it is okay to believe in Jesus and 'New Age' ideas..
What's so funny about Peace Love and Understanding? -

Re: Oprah..
06/03I assume that we are talking about Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth: Waking up with your Wife's Porpoise" (Or whatever the secondary title is).
I found it on Amazon and chose a random page. I got page 27, in the chapter on ego. The following sentence jumped out at me:
"Words reduce reality to something that the human mind can grasp - which isn't very much."
Which means I should probably just shut up right now, for a variety of reasons. -

06/03"Words reduce reality to something that the human mind can grasp - which isn't very much."
=====================
Sounds more like belittling and less than empowering? -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Oprah..
06/03Well, I was taking something out of context of course. And as a bookseller who worked in a big box store (Borders), I aint sayin' nothin' bad about Queen Oprah's book club - not only did she sell us a buttload of books, but she also got folks reading classic Literature of the last Century.
And in general I think Queen Oprah has done some cool things, and tried to conduct herself along decent lines. I mean, as a young person you could do worse for a role model than a Billionaire Black Woman, right?
But there is the fact that she is way over-exposed, dabbles in every conceivable form of media, and has these vast hordes of Zombie-Sheep followers who faithfully buy and obey her every whim. There is a creepiness there, to be sure.
And yeah, making fun of New Self Age Help books is a lot of fun, and way too easy. -

Re: Oprah..
06/03My husband always told me, "self help books only work while you are reading them..." -

Re: Oprah..
06/05"self help books only work while you are reading them..." that is the best definition of self-help books i've ever heard.. its so true.. the oprah show always has been for flash, and milking the 'lets go seek higher consciousness so we can all be powerful, self fulfilled, rich, happy, sexy, satiated, orgasmically complete, slender with big breasts unless we're men, oh what the hell, lets all have big breasts.... what !!! you mean this is NOT the meaning of life ! ... alas, well, this is oprahs schick [did i spell that right?] and what can you expect of a tv show that stops every 5 minutes to break for commercial to sell you a cell phone, hemroid cream, hummer, or plavix ??? the realll bummer is these gimmeee greater higher power prgrams have now flooded pbs "membership drive" ...and are constantly being promoted during their monthly week of info-mercials... remember when pbs had balls ? and intelligent ones filled with integrity, at that ! -

Re: Oprah..
06/06Working the registers at Borders one day. A woman "Of a Certain Age" approaches lugging a STACK of 15 or so hard-cover books. I start scanning the stack and notice that they are ALL Self-Help books. After a moment of consideration I choose to say "That's quite a selection." She gives me a desperate kind of smile and says, "Well ONE of 'em has got to work!"
And I felt so sorry for this poor woman. Because, honey, change doesn't come from a book. Change comes from within. And the best self-help book in the world will always be a blank one - with a pen next to it. -

Now that is the best truth I have heard in a long time. -

Re: Oprah..
06/06Angus....Bravo!
I watched Oprah once to see what Bill C. was saying and promoting his book. I have never seen so many commercials in my life in one show. It was very upseting and discouraging. I will never watch it again! -

Re: Oprah..
06/06I don't watch Oprah except sometimes when her show is on for some reason in the middle of the night. What do you mean, she denied Christ?
I have the Tolle book on order thru the library. Curious, but I don't buy these any more. I've read many spiritual and self[help books and I do think they have helped me in many ways, basically one small thing from each one sticks. Of course if you read a 100 of them, you're going to see some improvements, lol! I'm actually very different now from before I got into these. You don't realize it until for some reason you look way back and realize oh wait a minute, look at all these things that happened since. Hmmmm - I've actually changed some for the better. -

Re: Oprah..
06/09Nicely put. I too have picked up little nuggets of practical wisdom amidst the sea of trite psychobabble. But I've also had life changing epiphanies watching the Brady Bunch or Star Trek. Truth is where you find it.
