Out to eat

I two suffer from both groups. I've noticed that even eating a bite of onion I get really sick. Onion powder doesn't bother me and I don't know why. Anyone else with that affect. Have you ever notice if you ask for no onion you get extra.

    I was okay with onion powder and dried onions for quite a long while, but now those affect me, too. :(

      i wonder now, how much has become psychological , for me.... knowing the reaction that eating onion or garlic has for me. Could just the scent now, set me off, and make me ill ?

        The scent of lots of onions or garlic does make me queasy. Is it psychological or 100% physical? Who knows. Either way, it ends up being a physical reaction, and that's no fun.

          I went to my brothers this past week. They asked me if I needed anything special. My reply was besides soy or rice milk. " I will eat what I am able from what is available." Or. I will order myself....

          I did not want to " be polite, ... and take what my husband's family calls " a no thank you helping. when someone goes to the trouble of cooking something and even tho' you don't care for it.... you take a bite, to be polite.

          I get reactions to both eating onions (et al) as well as smelling them, whether raw or cooked. I've been mostly lucky, because usually when I go out to eat, its at restaurants located at Walt Disney World (Florida resident). Their chefs actually come to the table and discuss what you can and cannot have and if its a buffet and there's little to eat, they've been known to make special dishes for me. The only two restaurants there that I had problems with, that didn't take my allergy seriously, were the San Angel Inn in the Mexico pavilion in Epcot (I don't think the chef understood what I was saying-language issues) and Olivia's Cafe at Old Key West resort (they just didn't care). Maybe they just found it funny to watch me do the itchy-scratchy dance in my chair and try not to get sick at the table. Who knows?

        I think this is a safety mechanism that your body develops. My husband is peanut allergic and can smell peanut in anything before he even takes a bite.

    I can tolerate tiny, tiny doses of onion powder sometimes, but not large doses. I don't know where you live, but we have Mr. Gatti's pizza here that's got so much onion powder in the sauce you can SEE the onion powder. Seriously, the sauce is pink and must be equal parts tomatoes and onion powder.

    When I was in college and not yet aware of my allergy, I used to eat there every week because it was very cheap ($2.99 all you can eat buffet!), and then I'd get sick every Sunday night after eating there. It took me months to figure out that it wasn't just bad food.
